Sunderland release statement on ‘serious error’ ahead of Newcastle clash – Comedy gold

As many of you may have seen, pictures have circulated on social media of Newcastle United signage dotted around the Black Cats Bar ahead of Saturday’s Tyne and Wear derby at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland fans have fumed at this – slogans like ‘Keep the black and white flying high’ and ‘cheer up Peter Reid’ have been added into away sections of the stadium – and the club have now released a statement on the matter.

In an embarrassing admission of guilt from SAFC, they admit a ‘a serious error in judgement was made’ this afternoon, apologising to fans who have voiced their anger and concern over the Newcastle United signs and slogans added to bars ahead of our visit.

Read Sunderland’s statement in full below, via SAFC.com:

“Sunderland AFC acknowledges that a serious error in judgement was made in relation to Black Cats Bar earlier this afternoon.

“We apologise to our fans for the understandable concern they have fairly voiced in response and this sentiment is shared by the Club’s Ownership Group and Board of Directors, who have requested an immediate review is undertaken to determine how this process unfolded.

“A direct decision has also been taken by the Ownership Group and Board of Directors to return the space to its original state and we once again apologise to our supporters that this was not addressed sooner.”
