NUFC player ratings vs Sunderland – Two 9s, several 8s, a few 7s and one 6

A truly professional job done by Eddie Howe’s Mags this afternoon, who swept aside Sunderland 3-0 at the Stadium of Light. The huge gulf in class was clear, where the lads dominated from start to finish. Here come the ratings!

Martin Dubravka – 7 – Made a few really smart saves to deny Sunderland a consolation goal. Caught the ball well and distributed it quickly. One key save at 2-0 to deny Pritchard.

Kieran Trippier – 8 – Was on the receiving end of some questionable songs from the Sunderland crowed but responded with a brilliant performance. Great to see him back to his best after a really difficult few weeks, as he kept Clarke quiet and offered an outlet on the overlap.

Fabian Schar – 8 – Dominated the Sunderland attack and didn’t give them a sniff. Calm and composed, along with a few nice switches of play to Gordon.

Sven Botman – 8 – Commanding performance alongside his Swiss counterpart. Sunderland didn’t have a chance. Read the play well and looked strong after a few rusty displays.

Dan Burn – 8 – Rock solid display from the Blyth man who wore his heart on his sleeve all afternoon. Defended superbly and cut out a few Sunderland attacks well. Won everything in the air.

Bruno Guimaraes – 9 – Sunderland couldn’t get near him. Dominated the midfield battle and always kept the ball moving. Was mocking Sunderland at times and literally walked through the game, exhibiting his world class quality and composure. Special performance from a special player, who got the away end going with a brilliant celebration in the secon half! Love him.

Joelinton – 8 – Excellent first half before forced off with an injury just after our second goal. Sets the tone with the press and brilliant to have physicality and nastiness in midfield, especially in a derby. A shame to see him forced off, but we coped well.

Sean Longstaff – 7 – Had three decent chances in the first half but didn’t look convincing for any of them. Worked his socks off in midfield and threw himself into some huge tackles. Will be delighted that we’ve finally shut the Mackems up.

Miguel Almiron – 9 – Sunderland couldn’t deal with his energy, pressing and tackling in their defensive third. Forced them into a lot of mistakes, one of them extremely costly for Isak’s goal early in the second half. Rest last week has done him the world of good as looked a different player today. Laid Isak’s finish on a plate with some brilliant pressing.

Anthony Gordon – 8 – Seemed to thrive and relish the battle of the Tyne-Wear Derby throwing himself into tackles and battling well with the Sunderland full back. Came into his own in the second half where he found himself in a lot more space. Won the penalty late on with a great burst of pace.

Alexander Isak – 8 – Took his two goals beautifully, the first a fine left footed finish into the corner and then despatched his penalty with ease. Ice running through his veins. Don’t think he was particularly good in the game but walks away with two goals.

Substitutes:

Lewis Miley – 6 – Struggled to get up to speed in the game and gave the ball away a few times which could’ve cost us. Experience will do him the world of good but needs to get a little bit nasty and tenacious in the tackle.

Paul Dummett – N/A

Jamaal Lascelles – N/A

Tino Livramento – N/A

Matt Ritchie – N/A

  1. how can you rate Almiron higher than gordon?? gordon was the best player out there by a mile. the only one who looked really dangerous and trying to make something happen. not the best player ratings imo

  2. Hey gotta disagree with Big Joe & Longstaff as well.

Joe & Bruno ran the show before Joe was injured & was excellent for our first goal – 8

Longstaff missed some big chances in the first half – we could & should have been 3 up at half time if he learned how to score – 6

  3. All the marks are on the high side Ollie!
Remember we weren’t playing anyone special, just the Mackems.
It could have been a banana skin because our confidence was so low, but we did what we needed to do.

  4. Another example of marking the result rather than the performance.
Yes, we won a derby but lets get real with the marking.

Trippier got an 8 because he responded well to chants?
Then the rest of the monster back line get 8s – apparently because we forgot we were playing a Championship team.

Then poor old Dubravka, with three top quality saves to his name, scrapes a 7? What does the poor lad have to do to get a decent review on this site??

I look forward to the wedding, where finally Dubs will get some credit, even if he does have to take to the pitch as Martin Dubravka-Pope.
