A sobering update on Newcastle’s January transfer plans has emerged from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards today.
He reports that, as things stand, Newcastle owners ‘do not think a move for Kalvin Phillips makes financial sense’, revealing that we’re ready to walk away from talks based on Man City’s current demands.
It’s believed the £7m loan fee is deemed ‘too high’ for five months of football and the club aren’t keen on committing to an obligatory purchase clause worth £40m at the end of the season, making the loan-to-buy deal worth a total of £47m.
The deal is not dead, but it seems City’s demands must come down before the window closes. There is ‘some hope’ that the Champions’ stance will change in order to facilitate a much-needed move away for the 28-year-old, but there’s also a risk of Premier League rivals stepping in while we take a step back, as Man City are ‘confident’ others will meet their demands.
With news of Joelinton’s injury being potentially worse than first feared and the likes of Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson still struggling to shrug off niggling injuries, we’re in desperate need of midfield reinforcements. Phillips could plug a gaping hole, but I understand our refusal to pay a whopping loan fee and price permanent deal; especially in the midst of FFP constraints.
The Newcastle hierarchy do not think signing Kalvin Phillips makes financial sense.#TelegraphFootball | #NUFC

You would think someone else in the squad could do the holding role, perhaps Trippier or Schar could cover either with Livramento or Lascelles .
I wonder if they experiment in training if they think outside the box.

I quite agree schar would be a good option in there and lascelles has also been good this season, kraft has also produced when needed as well we will just have to experiment if ffp is that tight, it’s not all doom and glomerular, let’s see what hall is made of give the kid a chance

Have Mr eales,
Asked Man-city to deduct the loan fee from the transfer of Philips. ? In the Summer ☀️. Which will reduce to 33 million.

Just get Neves from Al-Hilal way cheaper and no obligation to buy 😜👍

I don’t think Philips is anywhere near good enough to play for Newcastle and I hope Eddie Howe thinks the same, pep certainly does

Further to the possible restraint being given air it begs the question are we being pushed into a certain direction here or is it truly a case of poor economics?
The question that no one is asking is what are we to do in respect of the shortfall in our accounts ?
Are we being slowly guided into the old request of selling the naming rites of our beloved St James Park or am I being to forward as it stands should we think about our situation we could insist that St James Park be retained in whatever naming rites should be offered this would afford us breathing space with our accounts plus the sharks above us !
