Newcastle are showing interest in Borussia Monchengladbach defender Joe Scally, according to The Mirror; who also report that Kalvin Phillips looks set to join West Ham.
They claim that the Scally could be targeted should Kieran Trippier seal a January move to Bayern Munich, who haven’t given up on signing the 33-year-old despite having an initial approach rejected over the weekend.
The 21-year-old is a versatile USA international who has already operated in four positions for the Bundesliga side this season. He is predominantly a right-back but has also operated at centre-back, on the wing and at left-back.
Scally stands 6ft tall and joined the Monchengladbach three years ago from MLS side New York City. It seems unlikely, as things stand, that we sell Trippier this late in the day. However, a back-up option to Tino Livramento could be targeted with Javier Manquillo joining Celta Vigo and Emil Krafth out of contract this summer.
As for Phillips, The Mirror’s James Nursey – the same journalist who reports on our interest in Scally – claims that the 28-year-old is closing in on a move to West Ham.
Despite long-term interest from Eddie Howe, it seems we’ve walked away from talks due to Man City’s excessive demands, with the Hammers happy to pay his £130,000 wages in full, plus bonuses, in a straight loan deal.
It’s about time Newcastle put their money where their mouth is. How many players have they been linked with, countless, how many have been signed, zilch! Everyone must be sick of reading about who next they are being linked with! Sell Almiron, Trippier and injury prone Wilson and get the cash out!
