Worrying pictures from St James’ Park as Eddie Howe issues injury update after Luton draw

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Anthony Gordon suffered a twisted ankle in today’s 4-4 draw with Luton, revealing that Alexander Isak missed out with a “slight groin injury” that doesn’t look “too serious.”

The Swede should be back “pretty soon”, but Gordon’s issue is a fresh worry after the winger was seen leaving St James’ Park on crutches after the eight-goal thriller.

“It looked like Anthony twisted his ankle” Howe said. “I wasn’t sure with the exact incident – I didn’t necessarily see the exact moment when he did it – but he was in a lot of pain at half-time and he had to come off.

“I’ve no idea how serious it is, but it was sore enough for him to have to come off. That was his decision, he knew he couldn’t continue. Obviously, we hope it’s not bad. He’s such an important player for us, and we missed him when he went off.”

On Isak’s absence, Howe said: “Alex has got a slight groin injury. We don’t think it’s too serious, and we’re hoping he’ll be back pretty soon, but when that is, I’m not sure.”

Gordon didn’t come out for the second half and is an early doubt for next weekend’s trip to Nottingham Forest. However, on a positive note, it was great to see Harvey Barnes mark his comeback with a goal.
