Great news for Newcastle United as 93rd-minute drama seals near-perfect weekend

Speaking on the NUFCBlogcast last week, I mentioned that this felt like a massive weekend for Newcastle United and a huge chance to (hopefully) capitalise on the fixtures our Premier League rivals were facing.

A few days later, things couldn’t have gone much better from a NUFC perspective, as our 1-0 win over Fulham was followed by a host of results that only boost our hopes of qualifying for Europe.

West Ham’s comeback win at Wolves aside, we saw Brighton lose 3-0 to Arsenal on Saturday, Man Utd draw with Liverpool from a winning position on Sunday and Chelsea concede a 93rd-minute equaliser at Sheffield United to drop two points at the death.

We stay in 8th, but we’re now only two points behind Man Utd in 6th, one point from West Ham (7th) with a game in hand, three points clear of Chelsea (9th) after their slip up in Sheffield, four clear of Brighton (10th) and five clear of Wolves in 11th.

Just a few weeks ago, we were at risk of falling out of the top 10 and some claimed our ‘season was over’ after that FA Cup exit at Man City. There’s still a lot of work to do, but with seven points from our last three games and a precious win at Fulham on a weekend where several of our European rivals slipped up, the Premier League table paints a much more positive fixture for Newcastle United.
