Jonas signs on until 2015

Happy handshakes from Pardew and Jonas
Newcastle United have announced that Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez has signed a new contract at the club.

Jonas has put pen to paper on a two year extension with Newcastle which will see him contracted to the club until 2015.

The biggest thing for me is that it shows a commitment to keeping our current players, which is something that the club struggled with over the summer. Granted it’s not a cast iron guarantee that Jonas will not be moving, but it does at least show that we do offer wages at a level high enough to keep current players interested which had been a concern for some, myself included.

Jonas is a bit of an enigma if truth be told. He has unbelievable tekkers on his day and at times can keep a whole defence occupied. On the flipside of that his end product has come in for criticism as it can be lacking at times, but few can deny that the Argentina international doesn’t work his socks off for the team.

However Jonas has revealed that he was only to happy to put to paper on a contract extension. Speaking to the club website, the 28-year-old had this to say:

“I’ve said many times that I love playing for Newcastle. I love the city, the fans and the team. So I had no hesitation in signing a new contract. It has been a good start to the season and this is a great place to be.”

“I am proud that the manager and the board see me as part of the long-term future of Newcastle. I have always given my best here and I will always do that.”

I’m pretty chuffed with this news to be honest. It’s come a bit out of left field but I’ll take it. Is this another sign that things at the club are improving? I’m not sure on that one, but Alan Pardew seems happy enough to have tied down Gutierrez.

“Jonas is an integral part of the future of Newcastle United and we are delighted to have signed a new contract with him,” said Pardew. “As a seasoned international player, he adds a different dimension to our play when he is on the field and is a huge asset to us.”

“Jonas can turn a game in an instant, he has marvellous ball skills, a terrific work rate and in my time here, has hardly missed a game. That’s the sort of consistency, fitness and performance wise, that a manager looks for in a player.”

Great news. Colo next please!

  1. Whilst I’m not saying that the owner is full of sweetness & light…I do think that some of the negativity around the club was generated by the fans as a result of here-say and players with an axe to grid regarding their own futures. all that **** from Enrique about lack of ambition…I suspect he just wanted a wage rise greedy s*d and Barton\Nolan were after long term pension plans. Just goes to show there is usually two sides to any argument…trouble is we only ever hear one side!

  2. Good news and unexpected. Granted his end product is not as good as we would like, but he draws players out of position, creating space for others with his pace and covers the full back well. In that respect although not immediately obvious, he probably saves us conceding a goal or two throughout the course of the season too.
With the depth we now have on the left (Guti, Marveaux, Sammi Ameobi and Ferguson) we have options that suit every style of play. Guti will continue to be a valuable member of our squad and will provide stiff competition for the 1st team place, which can only up everybody’s game. 🙂

So now that he has signed on, is Collocini to follow? He has become indispensable since he took the armband on.

  3. Wow! Cracking news… positive decision from the board. Great to know that they are prepared to pay competitive rates to keep (and attract?) talented players

    Still… there’s no way they’re renewing/extending Colo at a reported 80k a week surely??

      (Quote)

  4. M – He is the newly elected Captain. It makes sense to make the skipper the highest earner and he is worth it. We will simply not replace him with lesser wages or a cheap deal if we let him go. The understanding he and Taylor are forming is very hard to reproduce. If you need a good partnership/understanding anywhere on the pitch, it is central defence. His calm influence is beginning to rub off on Taylor and his passing ability complements the direction Pardew is trying to take this club in.
To get somebody in with the same qualities we would be looking at a £15m fee and £80k wages at any rate.

  5. Just back from a hard afternoon at the beach, cracking news to come back to, Colo next please.

M….who knows ref Colo but like I said the other day, he won’t get those wages at any other club either, not even close to it…..time will tell though, fingers crossed 😀

  6. Great that they’re taking this time whilst things are going well to sort out contracts! What a surprise! Fingers crossed they sort out Colo too and we can keep our two amigos who aren’t the sulky one 🙂

‘Consistency, fitness and performance wise’… yep.

      (Quote)

  7. Is colo really on 80k a week anyway? I remember at the time the deportivo website said something about him agreeing a 35k a week deal 😕

Once again guys, apologies for any technical glitches. We’re in the process of switching servers although most of you who are feeling the most disruption (ie regular visitors) will understand why tge mice is being made.

    Cheers fir your patience.

The good news is that Troy is stuck in a parralel blog and can’t see this one 😆

  8. Great news , love Jonas only thing is he needs to improve final ball as outlined above. Was not expecting it at all

      (Quote)

  9. SHAMROCK: Great to see that others also see that Jonas contributes so much more to our game than just the “end-product”. He almost never lose the ball… he either gets through or he gets a freekick!! He makes it alot easier for others to deliver the end product!!

  10. Fantastic news, would hate to see him leave as his game is perfect for the Prem. Gives a nice balance to the side, Plus he needs two men on him which helps others too.

Re Colo: Pardews decision to make him skip underlines his importance, to NUFC and Pardew. I think it was clever by Pardew. Also, I don’t believe they would make him Captain with no desire to keep him. Also maybe Colo might accept a pay-cut?lol.

Just think its pointless to make someone Skipper if they’re gonna get shot of him.

      (Quote)

  11. Also, bet Raylor’s nursing a semi after this! Help him out fantastically.

The good news keeps on coming for me!

      (Quote)

  12. Yes Leon, a trend I am noticing with a lot of our players at the moment is their all around play. Newcastle is turning into a squad of proper footballers, with good vision, spacial awareness and technical ability.

Put simply, shipping Carroll et all out has proven to be a good move financially and progressively. It has enabled us to move away from the ‘hoof and hope’ approach mixed with ‘effort but no finesse’. That style of play was prehistoric, awefully basic and lets a lot of teams down. Hence the reason we are now at least matching or beating sides that overthe last few seasons we would struggle against.

I hate to say it, but under our current owners we are actually beginning to look as good as we have done for a good 10 years. Early days yet ofcourse, but the more continental, technical style of play is there for all to see. Look to Spain & Barcelona to answer questions on which style of play works best. The direction we are moving in will see us better off in the long run.

      (Quote)

  13. I wouldn’t play poker with Ashley, he seems to do what you least expect.

Giving Jonas a new contract at 28 looks like it contradicts not giving Nolan and Barton long term deals. However, I think it shows that Ashley and Pardew wanted to reassert themselves and break up the player power clique that had developed.

Deep down, I think most people know that getting rid of Barton and Nolan was the right move. Barton will always be trouble and Nolan is slow now and could only get slower over the next 5 years.

Can you imagine being in a dressing room with Barton when you know it is just a matter of time before his fuse is lit and he loses it? No wonder there are so many good vibrations coming from the dressing room now.

Unbeaten, playing good football, skillful and talented players, Mackem’s best player does a runner and joins the Foreign Legion. Is this really Newcastle United I am watching or is it a dream?

      (Quote)

  14. SHAMROCK: It’s a bit funny now because Jonas now has to “change” his style again back to his Argentinian roots:) He has been key for us especially last season in order to get those set-pieces for us. (the Barton-Nolan-Carroll tactic or hoof&hope like u say). Now he has to adapt in to playing with likeminded quicker players setting up 1-2’s and play the more skilled game. Will be fun watching how he develops in to that new role.
But I still believe that the perfect team is a balanced one with both power & skill… leaders and more neutral characters. We can’t simply rely on skilled, fast players under 1,60m 😀 (not working for Arsenal is it?)

      (Quote)

  15. I think it’s a nice time to be a Toon fan, long may that continue.

Anyone think Wolves (a) is winnable, if we play like we NOW know we can how can we get beat?

Off topic , but, is it time to change to 451 or stick with 2 strikers?
I personally don’t agree with changing a winning team, and I believe thats why HBA came on on Sat.

      (Quote)

  16. Funny I was reflecting on the core strength article written a few days back, and was thinking that as well as the five mentioned there, Tim, Saylor, Colo, Tiote & Cabaye I think we will be adding HBA, Best and Ba as our starting spine to the team. That only leaves three places up for grabs. Who they gonna be? Well Jonas is probably one and the full backs and oh dear can we play 12 please. 🙂

      (Quote)

  17. Another one……

I was embarrassed for Sunderland last night, how good was it to see how baaaaad they played!

      (Quote)

  18. Great news, not Jonas’ biggest fan but by no means worst.

He offers so much to the team, especially on away games and hopefully this will persuade Coloccini to join him!

Also, just seen that the reserves are flying down to Swansea tomorrow with the likes of Elliot, Santon, Gosling, Ferguson, Sammy and Ranger all set to play. I hope Gosling gives a really good account of himself again to keep Pardew thinking!

      (Quote)

  19. Again Leon, look at Soan & Barca.. Forget Arsenal at current status, for a long time exactly that brand of football ensured thay remained a top 4 side and won trophies. Manure also play based on attacking prowess though great passing and technical ability.

We have power via Tiote and Steven Taylor. I would not say our squad is small? Cabeye at 5’8” and Marveaux at similar height apart, I think Obertan, Ba, Tiote, Best, Guti, Vuckic, both Ameobi’s are all around or well over 6 feet tall? It’s not like these players can be easily bullied off the ball due to being tiny is it?!

      (Quote)

  20. Shamrock, I think a prime example in this league is Man City, when you think of them going forward you think little players but when you look at their teams on a whole;

Richards, Lescott, Kompany, Toure(s), De Jong, Balotelli, Dzeko and even Tevez are all strong physical players but with the added flair of Nasri, Silva and Aguero!

      (Quote)

  21. Toonarmy,
I asked the same question re: Wolves the other day. A lot of posts were flying in writing Wolves off. Personally I think they will be a stern test. They matched Liverpool in their own back yard the other day and were unlucky to take nothing from the game. To be honest i’d be happy to take a point from Wolves away from home. What say you?

      (Quote)

  22. Yes Dan, City have it all at the moment. We wont be finding players that have it all on the cheap though, so I reckon what Carr and Pardew are digging up currently is definately the way forward for the next couple of years at least whilst we try to re-establish ourselves as a regular top 10 side with the capability of pushing for Europe and the financial rewrads/global exposure that will come with it in the long term…

      (Quote)

  23. Yeah, that’s why a good cup run to go with a stable finish in the league is great as well because once you reach the semi’s and say your playing one of the big boys you might just win a few foreign fans over being the underdog etc!

      (Quote)

  24. Was reading this hilarious thread on the SMB forums asking if we had the better team than they did. Great fun that! 😀

Happy about this contract, more because it shows the management will reward the quiet, hard-working players than because I want Jonas to stay.

Would like for Colo to get an extension for a couple of years. Everyone else is tied down?

      (Quote)

  25. Dan, yes I reckon you would be right there. Especially if we are playing attractive (as much as can be expected against the top sides) football. Getting foreigners interested in theclub has to be a big aim of ours if we are ever going to compete with say, Spurs or Liverpool again in the long run.

      (Quote)

  26. SHAMROCK @ 5 – don’t need to convince me mate – Colo’s quality…. and yeah Toons if he is on around 35k it’ll be a much easier deal to make

    Fingers crossed

      (Quote)

  27. Exactly! Just shows you though how far we’ve come in a short space of time, it took Villa and Everton years to being ‘best of the rest’ and we’re in and around that already, I know it’s only 6 games but after playing Villa and with Evertons desperately weak squad I think we can compete with them for 7th/8th.

      (Quote)

  28. Well i think, fingers crossed, the switchover is finally complete. I’ll give it a bit yet forst though before I breath a sigh of relief haha 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Congratulations Jonas. Four more years and a pay raise. Surprising in way because that takes him to 32 years old. Seems out of place with our current policy. Jonas is one of the most difficult players to get a handle on. Lots of possession, draws a lot of fouls, helps out on defense, is very durable (looks like he is going to die when fouled but then gets up and carries on) but then no end product. Very little power in his shot usually, poor crosses. What to make of it? A real mixture of good and not so good. Maybe this means Colo will get an extension as well? Wouldn’t be surprised at all. Fantastic centre back now. Perfect mentor for the young defenders and seems can run forever.

      (Quote)

  30. With a bit of luck you could be spot on with that prediction. That said, I think we will have a couple of bad runs that will test the foreign boys’ character and injury problems too. Can’t see the board spending in January, so any extra depth to the squad will probably not be added until next summer.
Personally, I’d be happy with 9th or 10th for this season, looking to slightly improve on that the following year with a couple of extra quality addictions…

      (Quote)

  31. Also someone with the right attitude. Humble, hard working & never hear anything but positives about him.
No spats with the law, no excessive drinking binges, fighting with team mates, late night Mcdonalds and orgies…
Collo talked about good players and good men.
By good men he means people like Jonas, Tioté, Ba., Cabaye who do the jersey proud on and off the pitch.
Some of the youngsters like Fergie, Tavernier & co also seem to have their heads screwed on.
With Barton & Carroll gone , ship out Ranger asap and we’ve got a squad of players that are a great advert for the club and can play a bit.
If Pardew can keep the harmony even when good players are only on the bench or some not even getting on the bench, we’ll have a good season.

      (Quote)

  32. I could see us putting a poor bid in for Maiga in January, them rejecting it and us saying ‘fine, we’ll get him on a pre-contract for the summer’ then Sochaux might have to cave…

      (Quote)

  33. Nice one Toonsy. You must work bloody hard maintaining this site. Must do your Mrs’ nut right in? I know mine wouldn’t let me get away with it!!!

STB, yes it is nice to have gotten shot of the wronguns. Never appreciated Barton myself, loves himself and is a bully.

      (Quote)

  34. The good season will mostly depend on Krul, Colo, Saylor, Tiote, perhaps Cabaye and at least 1 of Best or Ba staying healthy I’m afraid. That is far too few players in key positions. We can handle any of the midfielders other than Tiote in particular being injured but we’re desperately thin all across the back and up front. It all looks so easy right now but get to winter and with our normal number of injuries it will be much less obvious where we finish. Not trying to be pessimistic, just pointing out we have had an easy start and most of the squad is fit. That is highly unlikely to continue for a whole season. We just don’t have any depth at key positions. It’s great to enjoy it right now though!

      (Quote)

  35. @Shamrock Given our healthy position, yes, every point helps. However, I believe Wolves can be got at, if you score first they lose, simple. Although this maybe the hardest game so far, it’s a big test for the new guys.

I’ll be happy with a good performance and see what it brings. I’m excited to see; A fully fit Ba, sharper Ben Arfa and Marv, and I feel Cabaye and Tiote are gonna be awesome away from home! On Sun Supp, Neil Custis (geordie one) was raving about Tiote/Cabaye partnership, he regards it as one of the best in the league. Neil Ashton also raved about Pardew.

      (Quote)

  36. Shamrock, I don’t think so, I’m sure he just said he wants to focus on playing for them now (he would say that now that the windows shut).

      (Quote)

  37. Geordie, I agree with you. Would be happy if we could just sneak into the top 10 for this season and look to build on that.
Also, I know we targetted Maiga for a while but he was a long way down our list of targets. I reckon by next summer we will be looking elsewhere. If not for any reason, but to minimise the impact the African Nations will have on us in the coming years…

      (Quote)

  38. Just wanted to say Newcastle does already have it’s fair share of foreign fans from years gone by. I’m from Malaysia by the way and have been supporting the toon for the last 20 years.

      (Quote)

  39. Joe, yes we have a few from your way posting on this very forum. I’d say our global exposure is still tiny compared to a club like Liverpool or even Spurs now and there is a lot of merchandising etc to be made from the many areas this club has so far failed to reach.

      (Quote)

  40. GeordieTwo — I’ll ask you this – If Man Utd lose Vidic , Nani and Rooney for a considerable period of time do you think they’ll win the league? Because I don’t. Man Utd are **** when Rooney is injured and were on Saturday. I wish we played them on saturday cos Stoke had it all their own way.

Face it, not many teams can cover key players hence them being key.

    God.

      (Quote)

  41. That sounds reasonable to me too Shamrock. I picked us for 9th at the start of the season but then had my doubts when we didn’t pick up some defensive cover and no striker. The defensive cover problem provides the greatest risk, but we only have Ba and Best to count on up front as well. I don’t see Ben Arfa being a big goal scorer but he will give us that creative spark up front. A powerful attacking centre midfielder would be fantastic as well but unless Vuckic suddenly blossoms and stays fit for an extended period it would take real money to get one. All in all I’m thrilled with the start to the season but realistic about where we will finish I would say. I think Ashley is also watching the attendance anxiously as well. He has alienated a lot of supporters in the last few seasons and sometimes the chickens come home to roost as they say.

      (Quote)

  42. Shamrock – Cheers man. Does it do her nut in? Well she left me once because it did her nut in that much, but now she understands that its like my hobby so she tolerates it haha

I’ve had a few nibbles from people saying that I’m making money from this place. If that was the case I reckon my wife would have been more understanding. Bottom line is this place has cost money, even with the ads that are now in place. Eventually they will be better ads though and maybe the initial outlay (nigh on 1000 pound now lol) can be clawed back over time. Well see though. I just want to try and make this place tge biggest and best it can be and hopefully this new server will lead to an increase in online time with less blips. Fingers crossed 🙂

      (Quote)

  43. Good point Toonarmy87. I didn’t mean to say we would do terribly if we lost all of the players I mentioned at once, I meant if we lost any 2 of those players at the same time or even if we lost only Colo for an extended period we would have huge problems. Comparing us to ManU is a bit ridiculous though as they have huge depth. Vidic is out for an extended period and you don’t see any real difference. Rooney is big for them but losing him is just an inconvenience. They have depth all over the pitch. Give Berbatov a few games and he will start to score and there are several others who can fill in. Nani looks good going forward and they have Chicarito as well.
I’m an agnostic so mentioning God doesn’t do much for me. If you’re expasperated with people’s opinions don’t bother coming onto a blog I would suggest. Have a brilliant day.

      (Quote)

  44. I’m not a big Jonas fan but admire his work-rate and the way he gets back to defend.

Why can’t he cross & shoot? It’s crazy and so infuriating.

Hopefully Jonas will be more productive if he no longer has to cross for a target man. Instead playing it along the floor to Ba or HBA.

      (Quote)

  45. Toonsy: So hopefully the new server will stop the site from going down on a busy day? If so then that’s great 🙂

      (Quote)

  46. Sorry Toonarmy87 what does pick holes in Polo’s mean? If it means find problems with something fantastic then no I don’t. It goes back to what many on here have spoken of before: optimists think realists are pessimists. I think of myself as a realist. We are having a fantastic start to the season but I think I can see some possible rocks in the water ahead. Ashley still doesn’t have a competent managing director in place. Let Llambias go back to the casino and bring in a football man who Pardew can trust to work with. That would remove one huge rock.

      (Quote)

  47. Spot on Geoff777. Hopefully Obertan doesn’t turn out the same way. He has tremendous pace and draws players out of position. He seemed to create huge problems for Blackburn but then his end product wasn’t there. To me he looks like he doesn’t want to be a classic winger, he wants to cut inside and shoot or pass on the ground. That may be the way we have to play with either Santon on the left or Simpson on the right overlapping and providing crosses.

      (Quote)

  48. GeordieTwo – I wouldn’t let these worry you man it can happen to all the teams, least we’re fortunate enough to have started well!

  51. I think this shows we now want to take things to the next level, most of our squad are tied to long term deals.

  55. “I think this shows we now want to take things to the next level, most of our squad are tied to long term deals.”

Have to disagree. Buying a striker and defender would have shown this with the mammoth transfer fee we received

Let’s not get carried away here. I like to celebrate a good league position as much as the next person but all the above shows is that we want maximum money for our players when we sell them and not wait until the last year of their contract (a la Jose)

  56. Well Toonsy safe to say you are doing a good job so far. Overall this site attracts pretty balanced views. There do not appear to be many of the unfortunate ‘stereotype’ fans that get portrayed in the media expecting world domination. That must come down to sending the right message across in the articles that are being written. Generally they do not tend to be overtly biased or pushy and make way for good, generally healthy and non abusive debate afterwards. That is a pretty sound foundation you have laid.

Add to that the easy to navigate, attractive home page and I for one feel that this site is already head and shoulders above its competitors. I have no idea how much these things cost to set up and maintain, but am sure it must be a huge commitment and quite a balancing act finding the time for this around work and personal life. This post might sound a bit brown nosy, but credit where it is due mate. We all love our football club and it is great that somebody like yourself has gone out of your way to bring us all together in a stimulating environment, so well done :).

  58. Agree Moreno both Jonas and Colo have been very loyal and don’t spend time whinging like certain other former team mates. I won’t mention names of whingers (Joey, Jose) but they immediately spring to mind. I would love for us to finish above Liverpool in the standings. I think they are not as strong as many believe. Dalglish has overspent on several average players (Henderson springs to mind) and Carroll doesn’t fit their style of play at all. Suarez is already sulking and Carragher is looking slower by the day. It would be fantastic if we could finish 6th and get in the Europa league but maybe too soon for us this season. Build confidence, bring in a few more solid players and go for it next season.

We will continue to sell our key players when a great offer come in. Which will be frequent with them performing so well. We will then replace them with a cheaper model to do exactly the same.

The better we do, the more key/star players will leave to be replaced. We are not ‘building’ for the future.

  61. hopefully Colo will be given an extention. No need for a rise, he’ll not get 70k anywhere else at 30.

Good signs for the toon, perhaps as mentioned the other day, Barton, Carroll, Nolan had too much to say in the dressing room. good riddens i say. Apparently Barton reckons he can play until he’s 40!! lol aye for QPR when theyre in league2 – muppet

      (Quote)

  62. Re: the depth in certain positions. I’m not too fussed about up front, however losing Taylor (Steven) or Colo for any length of time would be a big concern and would probably severely affect our chances of challenging the top 8 or 9. Colo really does have a huge impact on our style of play, allowing us to play the ball out of tricky situations and passing to feet instead of just hoofing it clear and inviting another attack. Taylor brings the steel and full bloodedness, a very good blossoming pairing. Williamson is not bad, but not influential enough. I would not grumble if he covered one of the two for a couple of weeks, but much more than that and it would be detremental to the side and we have no real cover other than him it would seem….

      (Quote)

  63. Agree about Joey Mark. Owen says much the same thing after he scores against inferior opposition. Lots of big talk for a day or two, then it’s back to the bench or the injury room where he belongs. Apparently he hurt himiself seriously while tying his boot laces while with us. I wouldn’t have him as boot boy for Milburn or Shearer personally. His attitude sucks and he is still on 50K a week for next to no effort.
