Does Adam Campbell’s Cardiff appearance signal the end of our striker hunt?

Adam Campbell – One to watch!
Adam Campbell looks set to be handed a chance to impress in the friendly match against Cardiff this afternoon.

You would be hard pushed to deny a player who has scored goals so freely at youth and reserve levels a chance in the first team and I hope, as a local lad, he takes the chance with both hands and manages to force his way up our striking pecking order.

However I can’t help but feel that his inclusion signals the end of our striker hunt. Maybe I’m just being paranoid and perhaps Campbell would, and probably should to be fair, get some first team game time in a match that doesn’t have a lot resting on it anyway, but what if this is not only Campbell’s chance to impress but also Alan Pardew’s chance to see if he can get by with what he has up front, at least until January anyway?

Maybe it’s a bit of both. Campbell deserves a chance at the end of the day and if he can show that he can contribute then it’s all well and good, but if he does show he can contribute will it mean our hunt for a striker to bolster our ranks has come to an end?

I have no issue with Campbell taking, say, Leon Best’s place in the squad for example. Best was a squad player who came in when called upon and it will be great experience for Campbell if he found himself cast in that role, but if that is to be the case then we need another striker through the door. If injuries hit us and we lose Cisse and Ba or if they somehow qualify for ACoN we’ll be pretty screwed with Campbell and Shola Ameobi as our only two strikers. It’s a lot to ask of the lad.

One way around it is to look for a player with potential who could do a job now and that doesn’t cost the earth. I’m thinking someone like Jordan Rhodes who wouldn’t come cheap exactly but would cost less than the reported bids we’ve made for Luuk de Jong and wouldn’t command a wage of an Andy Carroll for example.

Maybe I’m just reading far too much about it. Mind you, I am a bit of a worrier at times…

Best of luck to Adam Campbell and may he take his chance this afternoon with both hands!

  1. What exactly is the difference between most of the olympic games competitors and the Paralympic ones apart from the obvious disabilities ? I know there is a few over hyped knobs in the olympics but I think it’s all wrong to tar them all with the same brush 👿 there is a lot of hard workers that have dedicated a hell of a lot of hard work and most of their life to take part, and I think they should be congratulated on that 😕

      (Quote)

  2. Newkie spot on I just can’t work out what makes them morons in some peoples eyes 😕 there is more selfish arrogant money grabbing ignorant leaches in footie than the olympics

  4. Dave-Agree with you completely.

Fair play, there are some utter ****** in there-Justin Gatlin for one, imo shouldn’t have even been there, think he’s been caught out on drug tests 3 times now? I mean that takes the ****… Then the odd over hyped British athlete or ones I just don’t like like Daley and Sudowo.

Other than that most of them are truly dedicated individuals with immense natural talent

  6. I wonder in FJ will be good enough to tell us what makes her a moron cause I would be very interested in hearing his opinion on her or some of the other sports people that have had nowt in life except a dedication to become good at something and have done it through hard work and dedication

  7. CC-Aye been a bit of a let down…could have had much better acts. Dave Davies instead of Ray Davies from the kinks would have been good as well 😀

  10. @296 😆 . Don’t think they are all morons but I could care less about the Olympics either. The only good thing about it is that it mercifully only lasts about two weeks every 4 years.

  11. I am personally surprised and chuffed that GB and NI have put on such a brilliant Olympics as I didn’t think it would have went so smooth and been as successfully

CC yeah some of the opening and closing stuff will be a bit **** but it’s all about the events this is just a sideshow

  12. Ice @ 311 yeah I know your not and I can understand where your coming from, but life’s a ***** sometimes.
I was watching our local news the other night about how our local ones will be given a heros welcome home by different councils , but the same shower of bastards wouldn’t allow a parade for our HERO soldiers returning from Afgan because it would annoy some of the republicans 😈

  13. Dave, in London we’re all in a state of shock at how well it’s gone and how much fun it’s been, and everyone who’s been to an event has marvelled at the efficiency 😯

on the Canoe sprint I never really seen it much before but I was watching the sprint the other day and you would think they had an outboard motor of it 😯

  17. Ice could you imagine the pies they would go through, he would just sit in the corner and get his trainer to just shoot the pies out of a catapult straight down the neck

      (Quote)

  18. Ice did you hear Aussie’s are trying to get them to introduce Bomeranging and sheep rustling brought in for the next one’s in Rio. that would maybe give them a better chance to win a few more medals, our rowers won more gold than all the Aussie’s 😳 😆

  19. Yeah OK Newkie, it’s a sparsely populated country!
This year’s 1000m K1 silver medallist comes from my hometown as well, we are a canoe/kayak powerhouse town lol
Dave, they shortened the 500m to 200m for the first time this year, really stupid IMO but that is a proper sprint starting from dead water to reach those speeds 😯

Anyway let’s hope we have this Anita lad through the door tomorrow, swiftly followed by a CB!!

  25. CC I agree 100% and feel the same way I think he’s a big hit with the ladies. the only thing I think could be worse would be the Spice girls

  26. Susan, its not hard to be fair, our entire nation falls to its knees after about two inches of snow, your lot live in two metres of the stuff for half the year 😆

  27. We have the best music in the world, yet you’d hardly fucking know it if you watched this and it was your first impression of Britain 😕

      (Quote)

  28. “We have the best music in the world …” By popular acclaim of blinkered Brits no doubt. Or by the same guy who said English football fans were known worldwide for their knowledge of the game. 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Actually I wouldn’t know about popular music these days. Too boring for me to listen to. 😉 More of a jazz man these days, and a bit of classical. And I can tell you that in those genres Britain ain’t the best.

      (Quote)

  30. Nah, Newkie. In my heyday I was a Prog Rocker of the 70s. Back then, yeah, I’d agree that British music was best. Australia was a bit of a desert then, though it came into it’s own towards the end of the 70s and into the early 80s when just about every pub in Sydney had live music.

Then I got old … became a librarian … got married … bought a house … stopped smoking … became my dad and said music was ****… ahhh life is cruel.

  31. Such is life eh Bris 😆

Can’t see my tastes ever changing that much, mainly because pretty much everything that comes out nowadays is gash anyway….Hmm, or is that just one of the first signs of aging anyway… 😛

      (Quote)

  32. Bris, you’ve no idea how annoying it is to have to tick “unemployed” rather than student nowadays. The work required to actually get a job is already tough enough… 😉

      (Quote)

  33. Bris-No kiddin 😯 I could go for that right about now….Was actually not hard to find work while I was at Uni in Reading…come back to Newport and it’s tough, had two part time jobs in previous summers but now its pretty hard, went for an interview for an admin post at the local Uni and there were over a hundred applicants apparently, the one who got it was some ex police constable 🙄

      (Quote)

  34. I did a post grad cos I couldn’t get the job I wanted. Had dreams of being a great writer. Found there was no job market for philosophers. Squeezed into an admin job at NSW State Library coz my ex-wife’s dad had some pull, otherwise I doubt I’d ever have got a job. Stayed there for just over 15 years.

Life has a way of dealing us some strange hands. It’ll happen to you as well eventually.

      (Quote)

  35. Ahh a writer…got a couple of mates doing Masters in creative writing….kinda like it myself but I can’t really afford it so I just do it a bit as a hobby, wouldn’t mind journo work but somehow its insanely competitive, which you wouldn’t believe considering the absolute drivel most media come out with in regards to, well, everything… a lot of novels aren’t too different either 😆

  36. So the Olympics is over. However underwhelming I find them to be, they sure have a feelgood effect on the host nation. I remember Sydney basked in the afterglow for a few years. Enjoy your moment in the sun (because winter lasts for 10 months 🙂 🙂 ).

But most importantly, it looks like we may sign somebody. And we will still have a huge amount left over of that 30m quid Troy and Big Dave are rumoured to want to spend every year. 😆 😆 😆

  37. G-wiz, it certainly doesn’t help to go to bed after posting on this site 😯 😆 I sleep with a stab proof vest on now days

Troy, I quoted Aussie who said 30million.

Stop twisting my words Newkie 😈 😉 You seem to be well known for this 😯 – I said 20m – year on year…… 😉

      (Quote)

  38. Vegas — yeah , it is outlandish that Troy and Big Dave expect 30m to be spent each year 😯 😎 😉

      (Quote)

  39. Can you point to the post where they said that? 😆

It’s just hearsay I think. They are far too realistic to have actually said anything like that. But somebody said something, I just don’t know who or where. A guy at the pub said he’d heard Troy had said it. I don’t believe it for a moment.

      (Quote)

  40. Haha, I remember the days when Big Dave had an opinion… now days he simply surfs on the wave of **** exiting Troy’s oraphis.

I see Man City are ready to detroy the career of another promising English talents by buying Jack Rodwell to sit on their bench for five years. 🙄

      (Quote)

  41. Well that’s the Olympics over then ,me flags down . Will be up again come the 29th when the Paralympics start ,get to see some very special athletes then and a lot of medals for GB too.

Funky @296 No ,no Susan Boyle for them ,Coldplay are booked for the closing ceremony of th paralympics mate.

Have we signed a CB yet?.
