Does Adam Campbell’s Cardiff appearance signal the end of our striker hunt?

Adam Campbell – One to watch!
Adam Campbell looks set to be handed a chance to impress in the friendly match against Cardiff this afternoon.

You would be hard pushed to deny a player who has scored goals so freely at youth and reserve levels a chance in the first team and I hope, as a local lad, he takes the chance with both hands and manages to force his way up our striking pecking order.

However I can’t help but feel that his inclusion signals the end of our striker hunt. Maybe I’m just being paranoid and perhaps Campbell would, and probably should to be fair, get some first team game time in a match that doesn’t have a lot resting on it anyway, but what if this is not only Campbell’s chance to impress but also Alan Pardew’s chance to see if he can get by with what he has up front, at least until January anyway?

Maybe it’s a bit of both. Campbell deserves a chance at the end of the day and if he can show that he can contribute then it’s all well and good, but if he does show he can contribute will it mean our hunt for a striker to bolster our ranks has come to an end?

I have no issue with Campbell taking, say, Leon Best’s place in the squad for example. Best was a squad player who came in when called upon and it will be great experience for Campbell if he found himself cast in that role, but if that is to be the case then we need another striker through the door. If injuries hit us and we lose Cisse and Ba or if they somehow qualify for ACoN we’ll be pretty screwed with Campbell and Shola Ameobi as our only two strikers. It’s a lot to ask of the lad.

One way around it is to look for a player with potential who could do a job now and that doesn’t cost the earth. I’m thinking someone like Jordan Rhodes who wouldn’t come cheap exactly but would cost less than the reported bids we’ve made for Luuk de Jong and wouldn’t command a wage of an Andy Carroll for example.

Maybe I’m just reading far too much about it. Mind you, I am a bit of a worrier at times…

Best of luck to Adam Campbell and may he take his chance this afternoon with both hands!

  1. Sounds like Anita is a done deal. It’s breaking news all over.
£6-£7m for a new tea lady. Mind, we did sell Betty and Brenda for £8m and Anita is two handed. Apparently can pour a coffee and Tea at the same time. 😯

  2. Dave-We tried that last season mind and he doesn’t get as far forward, particularly when we were playing 4-4-2 against sides with an extra man in the middle. Cabaye played his best attacking football when Jonas and Tiote were essentially defensive mids and he could roam forward and feed the front three.

It fits with our formation as Jonas isn’t really a defensive mid, even though he did well there, and depending on his ability could get into the first team proper.

  3. 3HW thanks for that, seems nice tidy player but had all the time in the world on the ball wont get that in the PL ime afraid 😉

  4. Think we’d get more than 18mil for Tiote if we did sell him, which I’m hoping we won’t obvs and don’t think we will.

Depending on who we sold him to but anything less than 20+ would be a joke. Joe Allen at 15 mil….Tiote’s worth double.

  5. Sharpy and Newkie – The thing about Troy is that he will try to identify a statement where you haven’t crossed very “t” and dotted every “i”, and then he will be delighted to pounce on it, more like a Rotweiler than a collie dog. He sees himself as having a sharp legal brain and will split hairs like a barrister. If you don’t want Rumpole jumping on your posts, make sure you proof read them with a keen analytic legal mind. You dont want to end up in an argument about how many angels dance on the head of a pin.

  6. Aye ICE much quicker in the Premier league but the lad seems to have pace – hopefully he will fit in as quickly as Tiote

  7. I can’t understan why we would pay £7-8 mil for Anita but wouldn’t stump up for Debuchy 😕 it just doesn’t make any sense 😯

      (Quote)

  8. Nice as it is to see Anita and the fact that in an emergency he can cover LB ,I am still gutted it’s not a CB . 🙄 Also agree it may signal Tiotes departure but hope I’m wrong as Tiote is a beast.

  9. 232 😆

Nee worries mate, seen it all before with Shinton. Had managed to stay clear of Troy for a long while, but what can I say,I’ve been bored 😉

  10. Really sad news about Sid … Darts just won’t be the same with him 😥

Really good news about Anita – finally something to get excited about, though his not signed yet like. It has left me thinking tho, I we are to sign another 2 players – which positions?
Personally I still think we need CB and CF, but something tells me that Debuchy is still a possibility.
Then again, were out in Holland so VDW, Douglas and Toivonen are all still possibles.

  11. Anita would be a good signing, we are too reliant on Tiote as his current injury scare has proved, we all know apart from the promising Bigi, the rest are bit part players.

  12. @B&B

Not at all. We all make mistakes and write something in a way that does read as well as you hoped once you press the send button.

I only correct those that twist others words and allege others have said something which they never did.

It’s amazing how many people on here do that.

Newkie did but refuses to acknowledge it.

    Solano does it regularly.

The twisters I like to refer to them as. Twisting quotes to suit their argument. 😉

      (Quote)

  13. Sharpy-I’d still like a CB and a RB (or left if santon prefers/wants to play rb) as we could actually improve the first team with those.

We have one of the best front lines in the PL imo and would be hard pressed to improve the first team, and that’s the priority for me.

  14. Troy, I quoted Aussie who said 30million. I can’t understand why that’s difficult for you to understand mate. Just admit it, 1-0, the collie is lose and the sheep are running free. A terrible showing…. 😆

      (Quote)

  15. Agree re Sid Waddell, what a shame, I just read his autobiography recently and its a brilliant read showing that Sid was instrumental in the breakaway PDC that has transformed Darts into the major Sport it now is. Hilarious commentator and one of our own, R.I.P.

      (Quote)

  16. Well i would say its as good as a done deal , just seen an interview with De Boer and he said although its not done yet its very close . He sounds pissed off about it as well 😀

      (Quote)

  17. Big Dave @225. Sorry about the slow reply – been out. Ice @ 222 seems to think we will sell Tiote. Perhaps we will one day but how many times has he been sold in the last 6 months?

      (Quote)

  18. Troy – I hope I’m not being accused of twisting other people’s words?!

For the record, I don’t mind my posts being questioned if they don’t make sense to someone.
I’m old enough and have supported Newcastle long enough to know my own opinions on our club, and don’t mind explaining them.
I will have opinions on day to day issues such as decisions the board makes or transfer targets and signings and can post them on this site. But then someone can respond to my post with a different opinion which may be perfectly valid and make sense to me – resulting in me changing my opinion either slightly or completely (tho that very rarely happens). But I don’t have a problem in acknowledging other people’s opinions. What I dont like is name calling or malice just because someone doesn’t agree.

      (Quote)

  19. Anyone else think yesterday has moved the board into action , it wont surprise me if tomorrow we have Anita and one other on board . My guess its going to be Pieters or Douglas . I also predict by the end of the week we will see Carroll back in Toon .

  20. Troy – Your favourite trick is to pounce on a statement I’ve made, and to turn it into something I never actually said or meant. I spend the next ten minutes battling to get a word in to clarify as you rant and rave. As you know, I have resorted to recording you or asking you to write down your point on a piece of paper so that you cannot resile from it.

You have a canny knack of not being able, or not being willing, to understand the point someone is trying to make. People who blog on here don’t expect to have to have their posts checked first by a solicitor in case they give rise to potential inconsistencies that might be pounced on by you.

      (Quote)

  21. Axel, blimey you are feeling confident! 😉

Not sure if our board were “inactive” exactly, I thin we’ll have been plugging away at this one for a while, perhaps they decided to speed it up and get some good news through after yesterday but I don’t think it was a spur of the moment thing, just coincidence.

Still, however it happened its good news for now, hopefully we’ll get someone else in soon..

      (Quote)

  22. Think you will find that “Troy” is “Stardust” amongst other identities and well known on this and other Toon blogs for this behaviour, ignore the barbed comments or risk being reeled in.

      (Quote)

  23. Newkie – I get what you’re saying but personally I think we have RB covered for now and think CB cover and CF cover would be more a priority at the mo. But at this stage of the window, I say sign the players we can rather than nee one – ie if Debuchy can be signed but we are going to struggle to get a CB or CF in before the window closes, then get him in as he still strengthens the team.

    Ice – cheeky get 😉 😆 😆

Axel – if your prediction comes off mate, I think it would end up being the best window in a long time, having started so slowly … and I’d probably **** myself with delight

      (Quote)

  24. NEWKIE i don’t think they were inactive either but i do think yesterday was the moment when they thought lets get more pro active and start paying the market value of their targets with just 1 week to go . That said though i dont think Ashley will do a deal with Lille for Debouchy . I think their chairman has pissed Ashley off .

      (Quote)

  25. Robert – Troy is my brother so I know his antics. Also, I’ve met Stardy so I can vouch that he’s real enough.

      (Quote)

  26. Robert @ 255 😆 😆 that old story has been going about for yonks, Troy and Stardy are different people with very different views.

B+B did Stardy still have his head stuck in Jabba’s *** when you met him 😆

Axel @ 250 have you been smoking some funny gear 😆

      (Quote)

  27. Sharpy-Aye, we’ve definitely got the cover, I just want to improve the first team right now, those that are replaced, like Simmo, will be good squad players. Simmo is decent enough, but if we’re not going to renew his contract or there’s transfer speculation, it wouldn’t surprise me if performances drop 😕

I know what you mean though, i’ll be happy with any signings 😀

Axel-Aye, whilst it was only a friendly it certainly got some riled, good job it did too! Agree on Debby…Ashley will be hoping for Debby to try and force his way here and thereby lower the asking price for January I expect.

      (Quote)

  28. Dave – that occasionally happens as well 😯
Ice – the first part you were 😯 The second part you were being a cheeky get 😉

      (Quote)

  29. From the write-up at sabotagetimes, Anita doesn’t have the qualities to replace Tiote. He’s described as a wee fellow who reads the game well and plays great passes.

So long, Yohan, we’ve enjoyed your time here. 😥 🙄 😆

  30. @B&B

Absolute drivel again. One of the greatest memories was the pair of us arguing like cat and dog in a pub and you asking the barmaid for a pen and paper.
You then started contemporaneoulsy recording the conversation.
The next day we examined your scribblings!
Wooo hoo hoo hoooo! It was like a 4 yr olds homework. No wonder you can’t remember or be logical during a debate.

BTW Newkie. We have another brother who says exactly the same about Blackley.
” HE JUST DOESN’T GET COMMON SENSE” 😛

      (Quote)

  31. Stardy has to be one the most ugliest creatures that ever crawled on this planet.

He reminds me of a Mori eel 😆

      (Quote)

  32. Stardy is lord of his substantial manor and a well respected entrepreneur. He has all the brains, but now you mention it, he does have an **** shaped head.

We both beat Troy quite easily in any debate when we can get a word in. Trouble is Troy believes he’s won as he can never quite follow the thread; he’s especially prone to this when he’s got a pint down his neck.

      (Quote)

  33. B+B thats good that he’s respected for something as he isn’t exactly respected for his footie knowledge 😆
I can see the bro’s coming to blows 😀

      (Quote)

  34. If you want to know what Troy looks like, check out his avatar. I didn’t realise for ages that it was wor Les and not wor Troy. That is absolute honest. Even my kids thought it was Troy. Its not just the face and hair, but the stance. Its typical of him in an argument in a pub; he will take of his shirt in a crowded bar and point like that because he thinks it helps the force of his argument.

      (Quote)

  35. kim @236 have you not cottoned on to the fact , that where going to play the spanish way this season 😉 😉 😉 😉
on a more serious note i agree with most of you about the Anita, why (if reports are true) pay 7mil for him when we wouldnt pay that for Debuchy , unless the latter was just a smoke screen , so as not to scupper any of our other deals 😐 😐
at the end of the day who, with all honesty had heard of Debuchy before the euro’s? yes after that first game we were all amazed with the kids style of play ,but at the end of the day, Carr might of recommened both debuchy and anita, but, expressed that Anita would be “plan A” and debuchy – plan B”… end of the day we would all like to see progress made in the transfer market , and you never know who will turn up @ ST. JAMES’ PARK before august 31st 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮
toonsy mate, pull ya finger oot and start another topic 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉
back off to jockland tomorrow, so unless they have had wifi or 3G installed up there , i might not be back on here for another 11 days 😥 😥 😥
lol, then again, thats my job up there, renewing telegraph poles and the cables to enable broadband for the jocks 🙂

  36. Newkie – or you could argue that as Simpson is in the shop window his performances could improve?!
I just think if Simmo gets injured we have cover in Raylor and Tav. If Saylor or Colo get injured I wouldn’t be as happy with Williamson providing long term cover.
Equally, if anything happened to Ba or Cisse I wouldnt be happy relying on Shola. Also I don’t think we have enough goals in the team, particularly if worse case scenario Senegal make it thru the ACoN

The pair of you are absolutely clueless.

You fit in well with some of this blog crew. 😆

As our Grandad Les used to quote; “Common Sense is the most uncommon thing in the world.”

He told me on his death bed. ” Troy, you’re a fine young man and I not only bestow my trunks and cape upon you but also my common sense” 😆

  42. Its great to hear about this Anita deal. This will be a fantastic coup if we can pull it off. Its very important that we have back up for Kath Cassidy, because she’s quite close to retirement apparently. Kath needs to train someone up sharpish in order that we don’t lose her vast experience. Did you know she has been brewing up at SJP for over 44 years and that she’s served 25 NUFC managers in that time! Graham Carr spotted Anita’s potential when she made him a particularly special cup of PG at the Amsterdan Arena when he was on one his scouting missions. If the lads are going to have a good season, they’re going to need a regular cuppa. I think it was Napoleon who said an army marches on its stomach, whilst the health benefits of tea have been known to the Chinese for millenia. HWTL.

  43. @B&B

Did you know Kath Cassidy is Tommy’s wife.
    Great servants for the club.

Let’s hope Anita rises up to her billing.
Apparently Carr has identified that she is very versatile. Primarily she is a tea lady but can cover for the cleaner and has stood in for the caretaker on a number of occasions and is willing to keep a spare set of keys at her home.

They’ve clearly done their homework on her.
Let’s hope Anita agrees personal terms as she demanded her own broom cupboard at Ajax! 😯

  44. dont think this is a banged on signing yet, jabba has to come up with the right pay-packet,ajax offered him the top wage at club to stay 😕

Will we get One Direction prancing about like faeries for the disabled people? I doubt it, we’ll probably get Susan Boyle.
