What is going wrong at United?

Pardew - Symptom or cause?
Pardew – Symptom or cause?
Our recent disastrous form has led to many questions being asked. My main question is when will it come to an end?

The inquests continue in the wake of the 0-4 reverse against Tottenham on Wednesday evening with every one at the club from top to bottom taking some form of blame in some way or another.

The players were awful on Wednesday evening and looked as though they didn’t care or had started planning their summer jollies/transfers already. That just isn’t good enough and while Alan Pardew must take some of the blame for failing to motivate his players, they are still all mainly professional international players so should be able to motivate themselves to a degree considering the sums of money they earn compared to the rest of us.

Tactically I’m no wizard so I’m not going to get into all of that. Players were played in the correct positions but nightmare performances from the likes of Davide Santon and a trio of handling errors from Tim Krul are hard to prepare for and will negate the most sound of tactical plans.

The issue I see is one that the club have made themselves. The sale of Yohan Cabaye will have hurt the players as they watched a player who had become a dressing room influence fly back across Le Manche to PSG. It would have probably hurt a lot more when they saw that NO replacement was brought in for him. Again though we get back to those players left behind retaining some form of professional standards.

This couldn’t care attitude needs to halt but there is only so much Alan Pardew, or any manager to be fair, can do when the club comes out and basically says we have no ambition to even try and win a trophy and that our only aim is to stay in the Premier League but miss out on Europe because it is an inconvenience to the club.

What sort of message does that send out to fans, players, potential players? To me football is about trying to win things and whilst it’s impossible for everyone to win something every season there is no harm in at least trying is there?

It’s demotivated me if I’m being honest. To know that the club you’ve poured your heart and soul into for 30 years in my case is not bothered about anything but mediocrity hurts. To know there is seemingly no will to get better, to strive to achieve success hurts. To question why you bother with the club in it’s current state hurts.

I think I know exactly why the club said what they said, and that was to take the heat off of Alan Pardew but it won’t last for long. All they’ve succeeded in doing in the process is turning a large portion of the fanbase off. I mean why should they bother if the club doesn’t want to bother?

Moan over…

  1. What is going on with this website of wankers posting stupid fucking comments (Not you, KK) from threads months old.

  2. Mum says thanks for best wishes. She is fed up in hospital but sadly platelets are very low. Went dowm to 5 then up to 6. She hopes the ******** will work and hoping for a win on the weekend! Hazel ps. She is tickled by the vince McMahon rumours!

  3. Yes Cabaye got PSG’s fourth as a sub ice. Slotted it in neatly side foot. Thanks for the update Hazel.

  4. We lose Cabaye and Marveaux is playing so well he is practicing with the U-18’s now. If Tiote isn’t back we’ve got a problem in the middle of the park against Villa. What about Colo? Will he play? We look like a very shaky side right now. An early goal by them might knock the stuffing out of us. I hope Remy is in the mood.

      (Quote)

  5. G2 well if Remy is going to the gunners which looks likely he isn’t going to risk to much and miss out on a move IMO,and who could blame him

      (Quote)

  6. Troy,
Cabaye was massively underrated by some on here too. 😳

    Kim,
Missing your sensible posts and sad to hear you aren’t well. 😥 Been my battle partner on several threads.

Hazel, tell your mom she better get well soon! But I’ll hold the fort in the meantime.

  7. For me it comes down to one question. Does Ashley have a decent football plan for the summer? I don’t mean sell a few players and bring in loads of cash, then spend as little as possible and try to scrape by again next season. I mean replace all the players who go out (including Cabaye), buy a good striker, buy a very solid CB, buy a good winger and of course an AMF. This has to be the minimum surely. No more bollocks, silences and waiting for the last day of the window Ashley. You’re hanging on by a thread as it is in terms of credibility (actually the thread broke quite a while ago for me).

  8. @JJ

Yes by me. He had 2 1/2 seasons of not living up to expectations.

Many rated him too highly. I simply said he was a decent player but overrated by many. I stick to that now.
Though he did show more signs of class this season.

I’ve never rated Marveaux as anything other than lightweight. His absence increased his ability in the eyes of some including KK.

      (Quote)

  9. We can argue about how decent some of our players are but we have a huge amount of business needing done this summer and I have no confidence in the club to do it properly. Somehow I’m guessing we’ll come out of it with a net negative spend again. 👿

      (Quote)

  10. Its not that his absence enhanced his ability, its more a case of frustration that worse players get in the team week in week out, and players who put in less (or as little) effort get far more chances than this fella. With the right encouragement he could do a good job, but like HBA pardew cannot get the best out of the creative type. He much prefers the type of player I previously alluded to like staylor, the ameobis amongst others

  11. Important news item! Mike Ashley has decided to break his silence about his future plans for the club. And now without further fanfare some words of wisdom (and comfort) from our beloved leader Mike Ashley:
My dear supporters. Your concerns have been striking me and causing me grievous injury and concern. Your fears are groundless. I plan to bring in a brilliant new DoF very soon now. He will be more fantastic than either the amazing Derek Llambias or the fabulous Joe Kinnear. He will be a kind of Incredible LambsEar if you know what I mean. He will put us on top of the league within 2 seasons. With my continued financial support to the tune of at least 10 pounds next season he will bring in at least 6 brilliant young players. We will also shed ourselves of some of the pathetic hangers on and other wankers in the club. Fear not oh beloved supporters a new day is dawning. Thank you. That is all.

  12. Buddy

HBA. & Marv have been given ample opportunities. For different reasons they haven’t took those opportunities.

That’s down to the players not the manager IMO

      (Quote)

  13. Troy @777,

Considering both players clearly have ability and the manager clearly wanted them in the first place. I’d say the responsibility of their flop is split.
But I’d say most of the blame, is because the manager simply hasn’t implemented a system that works with out flair players.

      (Quote)

  14. Still don’t understand all the Marveaux love. The guy clearly doesn’t try in training – and it isn’t a “chicken and egg” scenario where he has ‘stopped putting in effort because Shola has been starting ahead of him’, he’s a professional footballer.
HBA is really beginning to blossom into some player. Did I say blossom? I meant balloon. He needs to stay the **** away from Munchies.
I don’t care whether or not these guys have talent (not that they often show it on the pitch anyway), playing for Newcastle should mean 100% effort in every aspect.

      (Quote)

  15. Also the argument that when they do play – Pardew has put them under so much pressure to impress that they try too hard and screw up,doesn’t hold true. Sameobi was arguably our best player last game. “trying too hard to impress” is bollocks, and a weak excuse, and one that is always given for HBA. He is a glory hog and is half-way through his career without having learnt when to pass the bloody ball.

      (Quote)

  16. Or perhaps it’s that, like many other players of this type, Ben Arfa and Marveux are just the type to show occasional brilliance but can rarely prolong their form over a couple of games. No question about talent, but if they are as good as some people make out and so easy to manage then surely other managers would/should have made inquiries after them? Both are not starting and presumably both are unhappy, we can’t demand any real cash for them so they could have been snapped up a while back. There was barely any competition for Ben Arfa only two or three years after he’d been linked with Arsenal, Manure and Chelski. Marv left France without many people fancying, Liverpool turned him down so he came to us-did he have many other PL suitors?

      (Quote)

  17. The arguments on here about HBA and Marveaux really go to show how big a job the club have in the summer. Many think them two players have had enough chances so therefore should due sent packing. Add them to the list of Remy, LDJ, Strolla, Colo and probably Cisse that’s 7 first team players possibly leaving in the summer. Do we really trust this rudderless ship to replace them and improve us as a squad?

      (Quote)

  18. Solano-exactly mate. Sammeobi has probably been our best player since he’s come in, that alone should shame our “international” class players. Need to take a good look at themselves imo.

      (Quote)

  19. ST-Well he left Rennes in the first place after they decided not to renew his contract! And Sochaux seem perennial relegation battlers these days so just goes to show how well thought of Marvy over Le Pond 😆

      (Quote)

  20. Stuart-hell no. And whoever the manager is, they will have a hell of a job on their hands next season 😕

      (Quote)

  21. Just read Marv’s wiki.
Something on there that Prem will enjoy:
“Marveaux successful individual season of 38 total appearances and 12 goals was overshadowed by the team’s collective display as Rennes finished mid-table and failed to qualify for Europe after appearing in the UEFA Cup in back-to-back seasons.”

      (Quote)

  22. I don’t blame Pardew for not starting HBA/Marv if they are being tw@ts in training, but Cisse and Mbiwa absolutely must start as they are currently our best CB and FW for next season – and we have nothing to play for,so we can allow Cisse timeto get back to form.
I’d also like to see either Haidera or Dummet given a run over Santon.

      (Quote)

  23. In other news Pellegrini is such a poor loser. Lost a lot of respect for him and city fans after our game vs them where the ref was supposedly on our side, now he’s saying the same about the Barca match? Man City were completely outplayed, the not-given “foul” on Navas was soft as **** and the same thing we criticise La Liga for every week over here. If Navas had stayed on his feet he probably could have tracked the runner and prevented the goal. They had a couple of chances but, as usual, were made to look poor on the European stage.

      (Quote)

  24. Newkie
Kompany even moaned after the game about how fouls were a lot softer in the CL and that a lot wouldn’t have been given in the Premier League. How ironic that his manager comes out and complains about what would have been the softest of fouls had it been given on Navas!

      (Quote)

  25. Prem-Abeid seems to be doing really well although literally all I’ve seen of him are his goals on youtube from this season.

Maybe we didn’t replace Cabaye because once Abeid comes back into the team he’ll be like a new signing?… 😀

Bigi needs to go out and get some serious loan time, and Campbell needs to play regularly. I’d say the same for Fergie, but honestly I don’t think he will make it with us, same goes for Vuckic and Tav.

      (Quote)

  26. I do wonder how Marveaux would have progressed had he made the move to Liverpool instead of coming here 😕
Was this another Carr recommendation ❓
Everyone was ****-a-hoop when we nicked him from under their noses.
Dare I suggest the great Mr Carr isn’t as good a scout as everyone seems to think.

      (Quote)

  27. Moriniho sells Mata coz he can’t handle flair players either. And to think he nearly joined us as manager. Bullet dodged there methinks.

      (Quote)

  28. Newkie
Think Fergie, Vuckic and Tav should all be shipped in the summer.
Either through our fault or their own, they haven’t made the cut.
At 21/22 they should be regular starters in the Championship at the very least.
Fergie is barely getting a sniff at Birmingham.
Vuckic and Tav are still only interesting a League 2 club.
We’ve handled Bigi horribly this season. He would have been much better off on loan in the Championship.

      (Quote)

  29. BB-There is no question he is overhyped by some, although any of his “mistakes” usually aren’t anything to do with him. Amalfitano, what exactly were we thinking there ffs 😕

Solano-aye and Newton as well, can’t see him doing owt. Keep Sammy, Good, Abeid, Campbell, Bigi, Armstrong obviously. I’m glad Jonas has been shipped out and Sammy is finally getting game time because he should have had more at a younger age, but the remainder of this season will show what he can do.

Tav is the only one I’m really disappointed in, he seemed to have such promise a few years ago and he was constantly getting loan time but doesn’t seem like he’s made the step up. I think with defenders you can be a bit more flexible age wise but wingers and strikers really need to be showing what they can do by 21 imo.

      (Quote)

  30. Still can’t understand why there wasn’t a queue of suitors for Clyne 😕 The lad had clocked up well over 100 Championship games, and his clubs player of the year award before he was 21!

      (Quote)

  31. I wonder if Ryan Taylor will be back next season ❓
    Like a new signing 😛
Seriously tho, I wonder how he is getting on.
Next season will be his last under contract too.

      (Quote)

  32. BB
Feel really bad for the lad.
Even though some (Toonsy 😆 ) had a vendetta against him, he eventually showed himself to be a worthy squad member that would do a job when called upon.

      (Quote)

  33. It’s tough to see Raylor ever playing much for us after this really. He will get some time on the pitch because he’s become a bit of a cult hero for the goals he’s scored, and credit to him he always tried his hardest, maybe if we could get his brain transplanted into Santon…

Anyway yeah, I don’t see him being able to contribute much once he’s back. Two years out of the game? And he never had pace to begin with…our squad would have to be in really dire straights for us to play him-despite the fact we only have one right back and a centre mid playing on the right! 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Kim Get better soon. You are greatly missed on this blog.

I wouldn’t say that Marveaux is the best thing since sliced bread but to single him out with HBA for a bollocking is disgusting man management. Pardew has a habit of picking out his favourites and likewise the same players to sub or have a go at. Marveaux was certainly not the worst player against Spurs. Sissoko was terrible but nothing has been said against him by Pardew. Saylor was shocking too.

Funny how it is when you look at performances from a different view point. Lots of our fans have had a go at Cisse for missing chances against Spurs, whereas Spurs have highlighted the terrific saves made by theirgoal keeper.

      (Quote)

  35. Groucho-I agree the whole side deserved a bollocking, esp Sissoko as he was captain. But then I suppose it’s easier for Pardew to make examples of squaddies he knows will already be going and he doesn’t want to fully alienate players who will presumably be our future? Not really the right call but still..

As for Cisse/LLoris it’s the same as the match at theirs where we all praised Krul and they all tore into townsend, Soldado and anyone else who didn’t finish a chance. The emphasis is on “your” team.

      (Quote)

  36. Laudrups presser on Sky last night was interesting so much for the confidentiality agreements lots sign when they get sacked.

He is a class act, Honest, talented and always complimentary about NUFC. In a Ashley less universe he would be perfect for us…

      (Quote)

  37. I remember Cruyff’s comments about Laudrupp.. Basically saying that he rarely gave 100% (but 80% was still better than everybody else) and that he lacked a killer instinct. Am I seeing evidence of the latter in his time at Swansea? Will that stop him ever becoming a “great” manager?

      (Quote)

  38. Prem-I get that feeling as well. Swansea fans were starting to get angered by the fact that nothing seemed to anger him. Maybe he just has a lack of passion for Swansea and sees himself above them, not really sure.

      (Quote)

  39. @Toby le Rhone – 762
Marveaux IS a better creative player than Cabaye.

It’s the same as STaylor being a better defender than Cabaye.

Cabaye is a better all round player than both but he’s not the best at everything 🙄

      (Quote)

  40. @TROY
Marveaux’s absence has not increased his ability.

Despite being given less game time than most other players last season, he still had the most assists.

Dropping Marveaux is like dropping your top goalscorer….oh, wait Pardew did that to Cisse & Ba before him 🙄

      (Quote)

  41. 100% agree Buddy@774

    @Premandup – 796
The Mourinho-Pardew comparison has already been made.

You might think it’s a witty comment to imply Mourinho & Pardew can handle flair players, but they can’t.

Both managers play boring football, it’s just Mourinho tends to get results more often than not.

There was some irony in him complaining about 19th centuary football!

Just ask any Chelsea fan. The football under Benitez was far more exciting

      (Quote)

  42. KK similarly look at Freiberg. Cisse was their top scorer and they were heading for relegation. They sold him to us and went on to avoid Relegation and next season achieve 5th. Stats such as assists or goals scored are of interest but they don’t show whether the the team plays better without them, as it is clear that we do when Marv & HBA don’t play. We certainly don’t miss them as much as Cabaye or Jonas (Who has been replaced by Gouffran.

      (Quote)

  43. Find the Rooney contract incredible. Not only are they paying him 300k a week now (thought I think he’s a great player), because of the contract length they are pledging to give a 32/33 year old 300k a week 😯

      (Quote)

  44. @premandup
That’s a fair point but i would think it indicates that the manager was not getting the best out of his team.

Cisse leaving Freiberg would have forced Freiberg to play more like a team.

If they had played more like a team when Cisse was there, who knows how high they might have finished?

You shouldn’t be dropping players that perform well for you, just to get the team playing better. If that happens then there is a problem with th system.

I think Liverpool as a team might have done better without Suarez but it would be ridiculous for them to drop him.

      (Quote)

  45. KK-When has Cisse ever been dropped when he was our top scorer? He was dropped this season after being stuck with for countless matches in which Remy proved he could score move, pass, dribble and anticipate moves whilst Cisse sauntered about.

Ba was dropped to pander to Cisse and the fact that he needs the team to do all of the creative work for him and as I said at the time, was the wrong call.

      (Quote)

  46. The fact is that our squad is a bit of a mess IMO. It needs sorting and we need to decide and be more ruthless in who stays and who goes.
I’m sick of seeing players picking up wages and contributing nowt!.
Players like Williamson and Anita prove that if Pardew sees them doing it regularly on the training ground, then they will get their chance in the first team.
There’s about 10 players I’d happily see the back of at our club just now – which is way too many.
We have 3 or 4 players injured or suspended and screwed.

      (Quote)

  47. Sharpy-agreed. And the ones I don’t want to see the back of are some of those more likely to go 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  48. I see we have increased the number of tickets to Villa fans for Sunday. Looks like were not taking up the tickets so hopefully there’ll be a low crowd on Sunday to prove a point and get Jabba worrying his fat ****!

      (Quote)

  49. Remy, Colo (as a player if he could refocus he could still be a great asset but he still seems to want away) Dummet (think he might angle for a move if we keep Santon and Haidara, we can’t have three promising left backs in one squad) I’d be sad to see Benny go as well, he is very frustrating and likely always will be but he’d be a good impact sub-but we can’t demand that role from him.

Our only really bidable players are Tiote and Krul and I would be absolutely gutted if we lost them, still hoping we can hold onto em both though.

      (Quote)

  50. Had to chuckle reading this. North Korea anyone?

Too many players fail to achieve their potential or deliver the kinds of performances that were the reason for them to be signed in the first place. There must be a reason for that, particularly when other clubs seem to be able to do that on a regular basis. The players aren’t daft and know full well what’s going on, both the good and bad. Unfortunately, just like the rest of us, they can see the cracks. An owner who doesn’t show up, no MD, a sacked DoF, a transfer policy that weakens the squad, no ambition or direction. The latest banning of a newspaper and the exile of Marveaux are just more signs of the cracks that are appearing. The club is behavingt like those odious dictatorships we see around the world. They ban free speech, rail against peaceful public demonstrations, try to control what the media reports, use internal exile to deal with dissent, fill key positions with people who will follow the party line no matter what, and keep the population in the dark. It may take a while, but eventually the walls will tumble down. History teaches us that they always do. Let’s just hope it’s sooner rather than later.

      (Quote)

  51. Nice Idea Georgio but logic slightly flawed. Political dictatorships are based on Fear to succeed. Which ultimately fails as any decent manager will tell you. Dictatorships in Football are not based on fear as they quickly collapse. DiCanio for example. Ashley is not running a dictatorship based on Fear, he is running it on apathy and that can take forever to collapse.

    Sorry, Dammit

      (Quote)

  52. Newkie – Remy isn’t ours to loose though mate. It would be great to sign him but when he came I knew that was highly unlikely. We were simply a window for him to display his talent to CL clubs. I’m grateful to the lad coz he’s ensured that relegation has never been a worry, but it was only ever gonna be a one season thing.
Colo – I like and would maybe hang on to until we have his replacement, but he hasn’t been a major contributor in the last 2 seasons with injuries and he’s on a canny wage.
LBs – I think Dummett is getting game time with us and he can see that Pardew has faith in him. I more see either Santon or Haidara leaving – Santon would bring the bigger fee I reckon.
Benny – I’d be happy to see the back of to be honest. Yes he’s a talent but he’s too inconsistent for me. If we could get say Siem De Jong in his place I think we’d look far better off.

I’d be pissed off to loose Krul and Tiote as well mate.
