Ireland and Tiote on the magnificent Magpie fans.

Tiote loves the fans.
Cheik Tiote and Stephen Ireland have been having their say on the Newcastle supporters today, and both of them levelled nothing but praise towards the Toon Army faithful.

Of course we are well known for backing our team through thick and thin, even to the point where it can be a bad thing (Jenas and his fishbowl spring to mind), but our unwavering loyalty and willingness to get behind the lads when they need it is something that shines through repeatedly, much to the annoyance of the Southern press! Long may that continue.

Tiote has established himself as a firm crowd favourite now and seems to have taken to playing in front of the St James’ Park crowd like a proverbial duck to water. Tiote is a willing worker, and people love that. He also has the skills to match his physical presence.

Tiote had this to say about the Newcastle support:

“I have never experienced anything like it,” Tiote told The Chronicle. “The noise is incredible. The fans just keep going and going, supporting us. It gives us such inspiration. It was what kept us going after our first goal against Arsenal. We couldn’t have completed the comeback without our supporters.”

“I could have gone to Fulham, West Ham or West Bromwich when I left Holland, but I knew I had made the right choice. Nothing could top this. I like the city, it is not too big, and the people are so warm. I have been made to feel very much at home.”

“What I want to do is repay everyone by helping Newcastle to win a trophy at long last.”

Does somebody want to tell Cheik just how long we have been waiting for a trophy? I’m unsure whether or not he knows how long it’s been! Mind you, if he could be part of the team that ends that trophy drought he would go down in Tyneside folklore.

Meanwhile, new-boy Stephen Ireland could be fit to play some part against Everton at the weekend, and he has also praised the people of the North-East for their welcome and has insisted that he wants to repay that faith and feels reinvigorated by his move to Newcastle.

“I’ve always been a massive admirer of the fans and the stadium,” Ireland told The Chronicle. “I always thought it was a brilliant place to come, and that the fans were appreciative of the players.”

“That’s what I need as a person and as a player – to invigorate the fans. You get back what you give, and vice-versa.”

If Ireland can get back to the kind of for that he showed at Manchester City then we could have a real asset on our hands, and I would imagine that the move would be made permanent in the summer especially now that Aston Villa are trying to cut their wage bill. If Ireland can find his feet quickly we could reap the benefit of his presence from here until the run in. Ireland continued:

“Hopefully, we can cap off a strong season for Newcastle. Alan Pardew has worked hard, and I’m definitely going to repay him for his efforts in getting me here. I don’t want to let him or my team-mates down if I get my chance.”

“First and foremost, I want to work hard for my team-mates. Hopefully, I can go from strength to strength personally, and with the team.”

Great words from both of them!

  1. I think if Pardew works his magic, in Ireland we may just snap up a bargain of the magnitude of Tiote and Benny.

  2. Irelands a really good player, interesting to see if we change tactics to accomodate him, Id expect him to be on the bench for Everton but Stoke would probs be a option to play 3 centre backs and a narrow midfield like we finished against bolton to deal with the obvious, Which would suit Irelands game.

Assuming Barton is out for a wee while, Judging by pardwhos comments, It looks likely…

  3. Starting to get excited about seein ireland in B&W – finally. This guy could be a beast for us like just cant see where they can all play!

I’m actually very happy with the manager and team atm. Its a shame we lost joey on saturday cos i think he woulda been the diff between 1 point or all 3!

I personally believe we will spend more than we did this summer, but we have 35million that everyone knows about so we’ll probs not buy anybig players, as clubs will be looking to get a bit extra off us!

Also does anyone know where this gervinho story came from? I hope its bloody true!

  4. I agree toonsy, if Ireland could get back to his city days then we have one hell of a player. My worry is though that with R.Taylor and probably Barton out for Saturday that Ireland might start right midfield which would be a very bad move! Maybe put Lovenkrands on the wing and Ireland off Best with Nolan in support from deep?

  5. toonarmy – Obviously it’s been in and around the papers for a few weeks but the Sunday Sun said we had started ‘tentative negotiations’. That’s it really.

  6. i recall ireland having a good game about 18 months ago – can anyone else remember it ? the thing is if we can get him to recapture that form from now until the end of this season then villa will be ever so grateful & will be selling him to the highest bidder!

as – daft derek – didn’t bother with a clause to buy him at the end of his loan with us that should just about put us out of the running for his signature.

nice one del ! – ffs i wish me **** was half as thick.

  7. RC – haha it does sound amateurish like, as if he plays mint they might just keep him! If we sign he him will have to agree to less money surely? We should stick to some more ivorians!

How good was it seein Benny on saturday! I think hom and ranger could be good?!

i think it was first reported in one of the french papers- not sure which one. That gives me some hope as they seemed to have a bit more truth in them last summer.

  9. D4T, MDS – cheers, hope it does come off like, he’s just wat we need, thank god for you tube eh?

How big of a game is the Everton game, now? if we lose things could turn uglier! i for one am pleased we have lost ONLY 1 in 9 this year 🙂

  10. toonarmy – Yeah youtube is one handy tool!

Regarding the Everton game; If we win were right in the hunt for a top 6/7 finish. Lose and people will start looking over their shoulders… So it’s going to be another draw 😆

  11. It’s not an easy one this weekend, that’s for sure. With Barton out I’m not sure we can put out the kind of cohesive unit you need to take on Everton – they’re just so well organised and hard to break down.

I just don’t get the Ireland thing. He was crocked, off-form, plays the only position we already have too many players for, and if he does well it’s another club that benefits in the summer. (Unless rumours of know fixed-price buy clause are false, of course.)

I just hope AP knows something I don’t; it wouldn’t be unusual 😆

      (Quote)

  12. I don’t think you can ever have too many players at any position. What if Nolan gets injured? Move Barton to the middle and start ___ on the right? We’ve all been moaning about squad depth for a couple of years now- it’s nice to know we are covered in the middle of the pitch. Pardew seems like he is more tactically astute than CH but the starting 11 picks itself right now with all the injuries. Nothing wrong with a bit of competition and flexibility.

  13. I think some people are forgeting about player power and the fact that Ireland will most likely go where he wants, ie. Benny, Enrique. Also I would be very suprised if we didn’t insert some sort of buying agreement into the loan deal. It’s what Del Boy and Ashley have done in the past with players like Simpson and Benny.

      (Quote)

  14. I agree with what DJG says 😯

At the end of the day, if Ireland enjoys his stay and wants to join us, then he will sling in a transfer request and join us.

  15. Afternoon all, how the devil are ya.

I reckon give ferguson a shot on the left and jonas right. Throw the lad in there

  17. Just think our youngsters who have impressed recently and are natural in the position deserve a shot at it rather than playing someone in their out of position.

Mate, do you have a fascination with semi-clothed American pop culture icons from the 80s? Hehe, I think it’s your inner Yank comin’ oot, like. Next thing ya know, you’ll be wearin a camouflage baseball cap from Bass Pro Shops and totin’ a gun lol!! 😆

Ha, if I even SEE you with a bud light in your hand, I’m flyin’ to Newcastle to give ya a proper whoopin’

  22. In terms of being overloaded in midfield, I assume that we either get rid of Smith this summer or he leaves for free next summer – either way, that’s a big wage and a midfielder less to deal with. Guthrie isn’t going on loan it seems but the mere idea of it seems to imply he isn’t a major factor in Pardew’s plans so he may well go in the summer too.

I do fear if we build our entire team about the midfield, that we will end up with a few unhappy strikers though. One up front means only one plays, maybe two if you make a substitution.

We have 4 strikers in the first team at the moment and more in the youngsters and most here think we will buy a bigger name striker in the summer – where will they all play?

I don’t want Loven or Best to leave really so if we go to this midfield based team, we’re gonna end up with the same problem we have with the goalkeepers just now.

Isn’t Lover only signed til the end of the year? I assume they will look to improve on him then.

      (Quote)

  29. No, I thought his contract ran out the same time as Barton and Enrique, etc.

He signed for 3 years at the start of the Championship season, so next year is his third and final year.

    I think.

  30. MDS,
Think Lover was given a 3yr contract in 2009.

  32. Fair enough- i thought he signed a two year deal for some reason.

I remember him talking about gong back to Denmark earlier this year. Maybe that is a possibility as he would likely be well down the pecking order if a new #1 striker type comes in. I would have asumed Best would be sold this offseason but I think he has played himself away from that. There is also the possbility of sending Ranger out on loan.

      (Quote)

  33. If Ranger goes on loan, we need Lovenkrands to stay. We’d lose Ranger and Kuqi in the summer and be left with Shola, Best, Loven and (insert name) for first team strike options and given the injury rate of our team, I’d like more.

Unless we sign more than one striker.

      (Quote)

  34. I was thinking that Ben Arfa and Nolan could play up top as well- or just behind the striker. You could always put a recall clause in the loan deal

  35. We must avoid defeat at all costs on Saturday….get those 3 points in the bag. Oh yeah of little faith…maybe I’m too negative and fearful after the last relegation….

  40. Can I put my neck out and suggest a blog for Toonsy or one of the writers on here to do at some point before Saturday?

I think all but one of our remaining games kick off at Saturday at 3pm – and we apparently haven’t won a Premiership game at that time since 2008. This doesn’t fill me with confidence for our run in, especially with the likes of Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea still to go alongside some relegation battlers.

Am I being paranoid or is a three year jinx something to be concerned about?

      (Quote)

  41. Moreno…had the same in Norway…played for a team of Brit ex-pats and the locals thought we were all mental….only ones playing in shorts on gravel pitches with temperatures of 5°…….er…we probably were mental…or still half pissed…
