A sign of how thorough the “new” Newcastle are?

Dan Gosling

Dan Gosling
Gosling's dodgy transfer.
I was reading something earlier, which wasn’t really very interesting by the way, about Dan Gosling and his impending return from his long term injury.

I say it wasn’t really interesting as it was the same kind of fluff that we tend to get when it comes to players returning and how they want to make their mark on the first team and so on. In the case of Dan Gosling it may be a valid point given that we’ve only seen him play for five minutes since he joined last summer, but it did set me off thinking about something completely unrelated.

Transfers!

Can anyone remember just how Gosling ended up at Newcastle? If you think back you will remember that it was something to do with some unheard of loophole that the player and Newcastle both exploited to their advantage. Everton were unhappy as they knew nothing of it until it dawned on them that they had unwittingly dropped a clanger.

As a result we ended up with an England U21 international for a fee of nothing. Good bit of business eh? Unethical? Possibly. Cheeky? Definitely, especially considering that Everton had offered the lad a contract, albeit they failed to offer him the contract in the right way which triggered this random piece of legislation that allowed Gosling to walk away from Goodison Park free of charge.

Canny business, aye?

Fast forward twelve months and it would appear that Newcastle have been at it again with Yohan Cabaye. Now I realise that the deal isn’t officially done yet, although I expect it to be concluded after this group of international fixtures, but with both Cabaye and his current manager stating that the player is coming to Newcastle I would tend to believe that there is some truth in it.

Cabaye is highly rated in France, to the point where many French journalists simply don’t understand why he would be willing to drop down to a club such as Newcastle. Money will play a part of course as the wages that we offer, even with our alleged wage cap 😆 far exceed what the vast majority of French clubs pay.

Look at his transfer fee though. Cabaye has been touted at £10 million plus before, yet we’ve got him for half the price due to a release clause in his contract which automatically means that any bid matching that valuation would have to be accepted. The rest, as they say, is history. Well hopefully it will be history anyway.

Look at Hatem Ben Arfa aswell. He cost about £7.5 million when you take into account his loan fee aswell. For a player that two years previously was being touted around at £30 million plus, that is good business.

In a way a lot of this is down to good scouting and in-depth research. Newcastle are clearly taking great care in the transfer market and are being thorough with the players that they are targeting. I like that. In fact I like that a lot.

It means that we end up getting the better players for a tiny percentage of what they would be worth on the free market which I’m happy with. I’ve never been one to care if a player costs 20 pence or £20 million as long as they are adding to our first team, so if we can get more for our money it’s all good.

Of course there will come a time when we have to spend that bit bigger, but in the meantime if shopping in the bargain bin means picking up players like Cheik Tiote, Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye for a combined fee of £15 million then let the cheapness continue.

Thorough scouting, at Newcastle? How preposterous!

  1. Agree Toonsy – I’d rather we signed 5 quality players for a nominal amount that 5 quality players that put us at financial risk!

Any how im back to my normal self, and my mum and dad loved it so much were coming home 😀 😀 😀

  9. No one can argue with the facts. But until Cabaye is announced by the club to be a Toon player and at the cost you quote, then I would hold back my thoughts .

  10. I did feel a bit bad for Plymouth when we poached Gosling as often its transfer fees for those young players that allow those smaller clubs to stay afloat, obviously don’t give a toss about Everton as it was their own fault. Have to be happy with the way we’ve got players on the cheap, Arfa, Tiote and Cabaye or Owen? Hmm…
Still, if theres a good player we shouldn’t shirk from paying it-we got our over inflated 35mil, so we need to make sure we get a quality striker in, even if its at a higher price than what they’re worth. Hopefully Ash is willing to realise and do just that..

Glad to announce that Cabaye and Gervinho will be Newcastle players this season! Both fantastic players and should light the Prem. #NUFC

  13. Spencer @ 9 do you not want to keep Joey because he was the player of the season and adds so much more than just making the numbers up 😉
Bobby tend to agree even if it looks certain that we have Cabaye until he is singned up I wont believe it 😕 :

I reckon he has decided and all parties know but they’re keeping it on the low down until after the internationals and the 6th of June.

There’s a reason nee one wants to talk to him….

  25. My mate went to a talk in last night with Pedro Beardsley.
He reckons Cabaye is a done deal.
Pardew intends to play HBA in the centre of the park.
He states Ashley is a good bloke who has the interests of the club at heart and Pardew is no puppet.
He also reckons Dalglish is regretting buying Carroll as he’s too thick to play alongside Suarez .

      (Quote)

  26. BS

Cracking bit of journo that mate 😉

I heard Carroll was a bit miffed as he got told to cut down his drinking?

      (Quote)

  27. That is true Moreno. They view him as Van Der Sar’s successor despite Stekelenberg being number one recently. Hopefully he’ll be our number one and have no reason to leave.

      (Quote)

  28. @Big Dave

Surprised if that’s what Dalglish thinks.

      (Quote)

  29. Bobby I just dont think they really thought that Suarez was going to be so good so quickly, but I still think given time the will form a decent bond.
But as Moreno said I think Carrolls drinking and love of the nightlife might cause probs

      (Quote)

  30. I’m not actually. Carroll has potential but suarez is better and kuyt has been played out of position for months.

      (Quote)

  31. Hmmm, interesting about Dalglish,
I’ll find out about that during the course of the summer.

      (Quote)

  32. With Carroll, he was the Big Man up here and the most focal point of the team. He loved it, it’s what he is all about. Mr. Newcastle.

Now he has Stevie Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Luis Suarez all much more important than him. Plus he is a young lad with very little first team experience trying to justify a 35 million pound price tag. Gutted for him. Naaaat.

      (Quote)

  33. See when you watch back the 5under1and game,
Carroll, Shola, Nolan and Joey were absolutely unstoppable.

Andy and Shola kept winning the long balls, holding it up and our midfield just ran riot because of it.
People whinge about the long ball, but with players like them up front and midfielders who push up and feed off it, you won’t go far wrong.

  34. Tim hasn’t had much to do in the first half… so i’m gonna nit pick on his distribution…. he’s kicking has been really erratic.

  35. We should play a friendly against Plymouth.

Firstly because of Gosling but mainly because they were so great playing “We are the Champions” that night we were promoted from the Championship, yet they were relegated.

  39. @17, aye, he might be player of the season but imo dosent deserve it. If it wasnt for the likes of tiote, Collo and Jose we would have leaked so many more goals.

Also joey has had 1 good season in 4, whats to say he wont go below par again?

      (Quote)

  41. Spencer but the majority of fans dont agree with you mate 😉 you do have a point that without Tiote Collo, and Jose we would have leaked more goals, but what your point as that is what they are in the team for.
Without Joey we would have won less games and might not have been safe at the end of the season.
So I think we should keep him for more reasons than you sugest>
I want to keep joey, simply becasue I squad isnt big enough at the minute 😆

      (Quote)

  42. Spencer-And if it wasn’t for Barton then Carroll/Bambi/Nolan would have had no goals and we wouldn’t have won many games, so you can compare it however you like. Joey got player of the season, not player of the half decade, I don’t think anyone is claiming he was brilliant beforehand. Those years were largely mired by personal issues and injury, I don’t think the quality of the player himself was ever in doubt

      (Quote)

  43. Translated:-

“Gervinho signing appears imminent announcement in Newcastle on Saturday, Sky Sports. Lille striker could join another player in the LOSC, Yoahn Cabaye among the Magpies from this weekend. The Ivorian striker’s agent Lille currently negotiate the final details of his transfer with the leaders of the English team. In operation, the LOSC could pocket 16ME. For the record, Gervinho joined Lille in 2009 paid an average of 6.5 ME at Le Mans.”

      (Quote)

  44. I’m not very good at arguement’s, but my point is, joey can easily be replaced, where as the players I mentioned not so easy. And ye, with out them we might not of scored as many as we did, but with out the players i mentiond, we would have conceded much more.

Which is more important? I would say stopping goals, there was no need to tonk west ham by 5 and villa by 6, at the end of the day a 1-0 win is a win and you get the points.

I agree with you, mate. If, and it’s a big IF, Cabaye can play to the levels he did in France he is already an upgrade on Barton. I don’t think people realise how good Cabaye is. I’m as happy with his signing as I was with Tiote’s. The two will be a monstrous partnership in CM. Two natural footballers with massive work rate and technical ability.

      (Quote)

  48. Toonsy who is mandy ?
Moreno I seen stuff earlier saying that he was coming here but the same as Cabeye I will wait till its done and dusted then get excited 😆 but I always said that I didn’t think Tiote would sugest him unless he was pretty sure that he would come here 😉

      (Quote)

  49. One thing i can give to joey, is that he has a canny set piece, and hes a CM whos played RM, the only thing I can say is I dont think he offers as much cover for simpson as gute does Jose, I think this makes Jose look a better player.

      (Quote)

  50. Dave,

I just divvn’t get the secrecy with Gervinho if he has actually made up his mind? Hasn’t been the same with Cabeye and their in the same boat?

      (Quote)

  51. Spencer yes, and the 1-0 against Arsenal was a vital win come the end correct? Barton assist…as were the two penalties he scored, and the assist he gave Best, if not directly Tiote in our 4-4. He was the single most important player in that match by far-if we had gotten spanked 8-0 and with no Carroll do you not think our morale would have been crushed just after the transfer window, because I think we could easily have slid down. Add into the fact he played almost the entire season completely out of position and it just shows how good he is…Would Colo have been so good as a right back? Or Tiote on the left?

      (Quote)

  52. Spencer you dont need to be good at arguing kid we are just debating it not arguing 😉
But I would say that getting beat 0-1 is the same as 0-5 😆 and replacing Joey wont be as easy as you think

      (Quote)

  53. Well when Collo played in CM I thought he played a dencent game. If you noticed im not totally ripping Barton and ive said well done for playing out of postion. He won us a game yes, but i could also blame him for goals against us for not giving danny simpson cover and drifting inside.

      (Quote)

  54. replacing his abilty i think will be, replacing his stature in the team I dont think will be so easy.

and fine them im not very good at debating 😆

      (Quote)

  55. Moreno it could maybe be something to do with an MA secrecy clause or something stupid like that 😕 😆 but I agree I dont see the point unless he was waiting to see if some real BIG team sniffs around

      (Quote)

  56. Aye I thought colo did decently there as well, don’t get me wrong, Colo and Tiote are easily up there in my book, literally Barton just nipped it for me, but it was very close between him and Colo. Sometimes he drifted inside, and I’ve been one of the most vocal about how that has had an effect on simpsons play as I don’t think simmo is as bad as most make out, equally however Barton has surged back to recover the ground lost and has made some brilliant last ditch efforts, as he did a couple of times against Chelsea, in particular winning dangerous balls in the box, so that they didn’t get a shot off.

I’m excited by Cabaye don’t get me wrong, and it does seem like we might be loosing Barton, but I find that a shame, especially if he goes in this summer, as it might well take Cabaye a while to settle in. Add into the fact Barton is just coming into his prime and well….meh

      (Quote)

  59. Newkie, I think i more or less agree with you, but i just feel that tiote would be my player of the season, but that is more down to opinion than anything eles.

And I think Simpson could turn out to be a good player and get fed up when people moan about him, although it would help if he shut up about man u.

Any how, I dont want to lose barton, and would probably play him in the middle, I think that Pardew is going to have some selction problems come next season.

      (Quote)

  60. Aye Spencer, fairplay to Tiote, prem signing of the season in my book. Competition can only be good, providing those that don’t get selected don’t start mouthing off like 😕

And I agree with you on simpson-really hope we get Jonas on the right to help him out next year, providing we can keep Enrique, as I think he’ll be able to handle it better without the support. He does go on about ManU a bit, but I remember in the game he had a heated exchange with their players after Hernandez dived, so its not like he’s in awe of them or anything, and he’s very professional in how he conducts himself imo.
