Would you switch Jonas to the right?

Right side for Jonas?
At times I feel that our Argentinian winger (Jonas Gutierrez in case you didn’t guess) gets the rough end of the stick.

He works hard for the team, rarely moans, is rarely injured and has been one of our only players capable of beating a man in the last couple of seasons. None of that seems to be the issue though and the main criticism of Jonas seems to be his lack of a cross or a killer ball.

At times I agree, but I think there is a much better player hidden behind the Jonas that we all know and some love. In fact I think that by moving him to the right we will see a much better Jonas Gutierrez. Why? Well here goes…

Firstly, to the best of my knowledge it’s actually his position. He was signed from Mallorca, where he played on the right and in fact started off playing for us on the right. Even the bible that is Wikipedia says: “Following the departure of Left-sided winger Damien Duff in the transfer window, Gutierrez has switched from his usual right winger to left winger position.” Now it’s only Wiki, but would somebody really take the time to mess with that? Putting him back on the right will lead me nicely on to my next point.

Jonas is right-footed. Very few of us, even professional footballers, have the ability to be equally adept with either foot. It’s just the way it is. Putting him on the right, where he can use his stronger foot, would only be a benefit surely? Maybe then we can see him whipping balls in as he’ll have the confidence to do so.

A good place to look would be at his goals. Now I’m only doing a couple as I don;t want this to read like Michael Owen’s brochure, but take this first effort against Barnsley. That screamer from the season in the Championship.

Notice anything about it? How about this next one against Wolves?

In case you missed it, both goals were scored with his right foot, as were his goals against Bristol City, Blackpool and Manchester City. Even his goal at Chelsea deflected in off his right **** cheek! Does that not say something about his preferred side?

There is of course another benefit to switching Jonas to the right, and that is the fact that it will strengthen our right side in defense aswell as in attack.

Jonas’ work rate is appreciated, as is his defensive work. We see it now where he tracks back and generally maks a nuisance of himself. Now if he could do that with Danny Simpson wouldn’t you agree that it would make us stronger on that side of the park? At times I think Simpson has struggled purely through the lack of support he gets from Joey Barton, but that’s for another day….

So what do you reckon? Is it worth giving Jonas a go on the right? I mean if you look at it there is some pretty compelling evidence to suggest that at least he should be given a shot, and with the players available to cover the left whilst Jonas switches to the right it makes it a no-brainer in my view.

Of course it will mean the end of the Jose/Jonas combo, but that could happen anyway. Why not use him in a more effective position and try and get the best out of him?

Your thoughts please.

  1. if jonas flys down the right like the way he flys down the left then FECKING DEFINTLEY!!!! i love his attitude and seems 2 love us , legend imo

  2. I’m equally bad with both feet…

I like Jonas, he works very hard & my only criticism is his final ball. If that improves by moving him to the right then it’s worth it…I’d like him to stay

  3. On whether to move jonas to the right- I guess it depends on whether you’d prefer him to cut in side or whip in crosses. I just like the fact that the guy is versatile and works his tail off…

  4. Legend? Tis one of those (once upon a time) awesome words that has in recent years been put in the bin labelled “for ****** use only”.

Why has he not played on our right in the last few years?

  5. I’ve been calling for Jonas to get a chance on the right for yonks, I do think it’s rather unfair that so many fans are so quick to judge him and critisize him when he hasn’t been given a chance on his prefered side.
I also found it funny that so many fans are willing to see Zog return and saying that if he wasn’t always played out of position then he wouldn’t have been whinging and wanting away in the 1st place.
Well Jonas has played out of position for the last 2 seasons and I haven’t heard him moan about it yet, but lots of the Fans moan about him 😕

  6. If he was playing then I’d prefer him on the right but I wouldn’t have him in my starting XI if it could be helped.

  7. Hiya guys, don’t normally comment, although love to read the blog..but it occured to me that this excellent suggestion also has another benefit..of saving us potentially £12M to reinforce elsewhere…by NOT buying Insomnia..and instead using Routledge/LuaLua as backup to Spiderman…another plus maybe?

  8. He is a winger that cant cross a ball and he doesn’t score many goals at all. He does win a few free kicks here and there like but thats about it.

  9. I’ve said it for ages to shift him. Too much is made of this left side partnership. But how many assists has it actually provided. I see jonas making decent runs and Jose not able to find him or doing too much with it. When it’s kept simple with little 1-2’s to get into space then it is good.

I think the potential change in formation and personel could free jonas to have a bit more creative license. I think we may move away from orthadox wing play anyway.

Does anyone know anything about these bangera boys? Ones the new drogba allegedly. Though I thought that was lukaku?

  10. Be interesting to see him cross with his natural foot but I am surprised we havent seen more of him on that wing. Don’t make sense.

  11. We imo would be a much better balanced side with him on the right and sylvian marveaux on the left . Jonas would help simmo improve with his tracking back much the same as he does with jose on the left .

  12. Raffo, from what I’ve seen and heard Mohamed is the better player but apparently we’re not even interested in either 🙄

  13. Totally agree, he’s very like-able and frustrating in equal measures. Works very hard but often with little to show at the end of it. Down the right or even in the middle ((where he could win numerous free kicks and penalties) Although probably not now with our extra options behind the front man).

it would allow Barton to move into a central midfield position.

  14. Very valid pointy toonsy, inface a point i have madr many times!! I think playing jonas on the right would not only protect the often vunerable simpson but would allow jonas to use his prefered foot which in effect should make us more of an attacking threat! I’d also like to see colochini used as a defensive midfeilder during the regular suspensions of tiote i believe we used him there once last season and he looked solid as that boy knows how to hit a tidy pass!!

      (Quote)

  15. Definetly put jonas on the right. He deserves it for the graft he has put in over the last couple of years, by far one of our key players he must stay for next season.

      (Quote)

  16. Most people probably know how I feel about Jonas, but it would be nice to see him play on the right for a change.

  17. jonas could light up our right wing, when our opponents are concentrating on controlling our left sided players…..

  18. newcastle the last couple of years have been very one dimensional with their attack. always down the left. breaking up jose and jonas will either 1. kill all attack or 2. equil out the attack and open up the right. Switch him. i’d say

  19. Dont see why not, better than wanye and simmo needs all the help he can get.

Ben arfa, marveaux, lovenkrands jonas (zoggy) all prefer the left so maybe it would be good.

Does get some rough critism. Read someone saying before its what souey used to do..play players out of position…wel hes right footed and cuts in or goes round the outside all the time so doesnt matter which side hes on…souey put shola left wing theres a big differencd

  21. Dan – could be a smokescreen and they are hardly household names. It does excite me all these names and we are really strengthening if the majority come. HBA and gosling are like 2 new bodies too.

  22. move him to the right. his work rate is second to none and if moving him could improve the end product then why not? isn’t he on left because of the partnership he has with Enrique? well that’ll probably be cured soon enough.

      (Quote)

  23. Raffo, maybe. I would actually like Mohamed. I think he could cope with the Premier League, maybe not straight away but given time.

Also he would be the third striker we are apparently after as well.

  24. It does suprise me we aren’t being linked with any defenders. I have been thinking about bridge. I really liked him at chelski and hoped we couldve got him when he left. He hasn’t really done anything at man city, and w ham was just a money spinner for him, but if he came could it be another good move if wages were lowered? I’d love baines if Jose goes but I just can’t see us beating man city to him. Dan what do u think? It would be a gamble but he was englands number 2 behind cole who is possibly, or wad the best LB in the world at the time

  25. i read somewhere that those 2 bangeras would not get a work permit ,they haven’t played enough games for their country .

  26. Seems to make sense Toonsy, but how do you make this point to Alan Pardew and the coaches, assuming they haven’t already figured it’s worth a try?

      (Quote)

  27. Playing on the left allows jonas to cut inside and run directly at the defence. Once he does so he can get a better shot away with his right. My guess would be that he would have less shots on goal were he to switch to the right flank.

  28. it looks like stoke put in 6 m bid for sturridge. come on Pardew go get him. hell want out if they land falco

      (Quote)

  29. Any one else think that we could be waiting for the right moment to bang in a big bid for sturridge ? have been reading that stoke are ready to bid 6 million for him which Chelsea will laugh at , but as yet we have with the sale of Nolan and only one fee paid for the 3 new lad’s still got the Carroll money . If we get another couple of bosman or cheap signings then just maybe Sturridge will be the BIG signing of the summer for us . The lad , as good as he is will not break into their side so easily with Drogba , Anelka and Torres in front of him and their new trainer will probably bringing in a few new faces as well .

  30. tiote cabaye

    thats a really strong midfield

whys there been no signings today???

  31. Raffo, Bridge isn’t for me like. He’s getting on, he’ll be on a good wage and for me he isn’t that good.

If Jose leaves I’d go for Izaguirre/M’bengue and let Neil Taylor and Ferguson battle it out for the second spot. They’re young, hungry and will want to prove them selves.

      (Quote)

  32. Toonsy yeah I would go with that. Since Jonas is right footed anyway that would mean that he actualy can cross from running on his stronger foot and does not have to cut back to cross towards the goal but away from it. I actualy always thought this is the reason why he has no end product whilst playing on the left.

  33. AXEL the way i see it m8 the toon might be just be playing a canny game over this, one they know they would be no movemant on him until chelsea got a new manager as he may have wanted to keep him,so they have to have another striker lined up hence they havent went in with a big offer for that french guy there saying 6mil they want 10mil,now that the new manager is bringing the porto striker with him,so they will let sturridge go,imo they will go with big bid for him, then again this might be my evil mind 😀 😀

  34. lets not start picking the team til weve seen how good the new kids are , we know jonas …his pros and cons , wats to say marveaux is better …jonas is a full international with prem experience …..but saying that im all for square pegs in square holes 🙂

      (Quote)

  35. Ice, I think we’ll get Matuidi and Taylor. I can see the club going for Bangura and Boudabouz as well and obviously they would jump at the chance if it was offered.

Don’t think we will get any others.

      (Quote)

  36. DAN4,well i will stick my neck oot and say sturridge, taylor,as i said @36 thats my reason 😀

  37. Ice, I would love Sturridge like!

Lesh, didn’t Jonas play on the left that day with Milner on the right?

      (Quote)

  38. Ice – u know sumat?! I’m always positive. I think the falcao link may well help us. Villas boas will spend alot and we may get lucky. Drogba may be forced out?!

      (Quote)

  39. whats happend too all the jonas slagging 😕 ive always liked the lad he always gives 100% and wins a fair few free kicks 🙂

      (Quote)

  40. Spot on Toonsy – I say switch Jonas to the right and allow him to either cross with his right, or come inside onto his left – either way the opposing Left Back won’t know which way to turn

AND, if you believe the press, players and pundits, then we already have the 2nd best left back in the country (in Enrique) so Jonas will only come up against 1 decent Left back all season 😆

      (Quote)

  41. I can’t see Jonas on the right.

If he was any good on the right he’d have been pressing the manager to play him there.

    I’d also sell him.

    We need someone better.

A few million for Jonas and we can buy N’Zogbia.

      (Quote)

  42. He might be the only winger we have next season who’ll track and that’s what you need when your under the cosh, which we will be.

      (Quote)

  43. Batty as I said @ 5 I think its sad that he gets stick for giving 100% and never complaining about playing out of position, and too add I think he has a lot to do with how good Jose is because lots of times he tracks back and covers for him, but then I guess thats not enough for some Fans 😕

  47. He seems to have made the position his preferred position now.

He flies down the wing, he can cut inside or go to the line.

He can cross and he can shoot.
More to the point he actually scores.

What is the point of a winger who can’t cross and can’t score goals?
He’s good at tracking back …?

      (Quote)

  48. dog he hasent learnt how too track back yet ,1 nil up at stoke wigan fighting for there prem lifes 3 mins too go stoke on the attack and zogs standing on the half way line waiting for the ball lazy fecker 🙂

  49. geoff777 > He seems to have made the position his preferred position now.

What he use to complain about being played at LB so he prefers LB now ?

  50. Does nobody remember the odd ocasion when hughton would swap wayne and jonas around? jonas ruled the roost. One thing sticks in my mind and that was his corner to ameobi to win the cup match against chelsea.

that was obviously right footed. Jonas is an out and out winger, not an attacking midfielder, we can’t expect him to do a robben all the time and cut in to score, he stays wide.

In the last game of the season i thought he did well in the middle of the park where he can use his right foot more. The poor bloke is just not two footed. too much salsa maybe?

i think he is a great workhorse, and i want to see him here for years to come, he will be on my top this year. plus with our new style of football, his drawing of player will be invaluable to create space for the likes of arfa and such.

put him right and on the right, if we want to cash in on him, then a season on the right would surley keep his value the same in a years time, if not inflate it?
