Some good news for a change!

Marveaux back in action.
With good news in pretty short supply I thought I’d try and give everyone something positive to think about.

Now it’s nothing major and it’s certainly not about any new signings, nor the departure of players like Alan Smith or Ryan Taylor so don’t get too moist. However there is a bit of good news on the injury front with regard to Shane Ferguson and Sylvain Marveaux.

Ferguson played in a behind closed doors reserve match as he step up his comeback from the ankle injury he suffered in pre-season. He came through unscathed and has been in full traning for just over a week now so I expect that we’ll see him in and around the first team squad sometime soon.

The cynical side of me is wondering if this is why NUFC are dicking about with the Erik Pieters deal???

Another boost is the fact that Sylvain Marveaux played in that game, and did very well by all accounts by scoring one goal and setting up another two. The French summer signing has been struggling for match fitness after spending so long on the sidelines last season, which was compounded when he took a knock during the match against Kansas City meaning that he has been left out ever since as he searches for a level of fitness that will aloow him to feature in the first team.

Will it be enough for him to be included in the squad for the match against the unwashed at the weekend? Maybe. Maybe not. I mean midfield is one position where we are the fine and we have Gabriel Obertan who will be looking for a start after impressing in his debut at the weekend.

So there you go – good news. It’s probably not the good news you all wanted but thank heavens for small mercies eh?

Now, where is that kick in the bollocks that usually accompanies good news?

  1. That’s it.

Ferguson saves Ashley £6m by not having to buy a left back, despite Fergy preferring to play on the wing.

  2. Obertan to start with Shola. Just leave him run around Sunderland and pass to Shola, who always destroys them.

new signings a must! and thy give team+fans a lift!

  4. i think we’ve been receiving the kick in the bollocks for the past week waiting on the Pieters which should have been done 2 weeks ago.

But to have something positive to focus on is surely nice. Since Marveaux played the full 90, I doubt he’ll start against sunderland. However, he’ll probably be on the bench. God, I really hope we start with one striker this weekend with Obertan and Jonas starting out wide.

  5. Why are all the comments awaiting moderation? Did the Celtic wind-ups do this?! 😈

Oh, did anybody else see that the preview for the derby game in the mirror said that the mackems had a better midfield than us because Vaugn and Gardener didn’t start? Have to admit that I chuckled as soon as I read that!

  7. I was not impressed with Fergy as a left back but I’ve no doubt Ashley and Pards see him as the future. 😕

  8. Troy, I would hate to see us rely on Ferguson until January for 2 reasons: 1, as you mentioned, he’s a better winger, and 2, he’s not that great at LB and still only a kid.

Its just stupid that we have to wait for a LB. There is NO decent reason for us to be waiting on it, other than Ashley being a tight ***.

      (Quote)

  9. i wouldn’t say Pards see him as the future. He’s somebody that actually understands football, whereas the board only see everything through money. I hate this ****.

But trying to stay positive. Howay Marveaux, Ferguson, Vuckic!

Anyone else think the reason Pards left Vuckic off the bench last weekend was to just keep him out of the shop window? If I were Pardew, I would be a little worried about losing anymore of my best players.

      (Quote)

  10. cant believe the sheer amount of time wasting we do when coming to transfers. We got 6million for enrique and the tight barsteward wont spend any of it to get a replacement. what are we to do? sit back until january with ryan taylor at left back…..

We have until 12 NOON friday to confirm signings for saturday. Odds of that happening are probably 100/1

I believe you are right in terms of Pardew but there’s no getting away from it, he goes along with anything the boss says. 😕

      (Quote)

  12. What can he do Troy? They’re stubborn a$$sholes! Protests don’t work. If Pardew threatened to quit it would put him out of a job that could be great for him, and screw us over even more.

He doesn’t have any other good choice but to go along with it. He has said what he wants to happen, but the ****** are messing about again. This **** is beyond stupid!

  13. Good to hear it touching on the Fergie bit I remember reading something Pards said just after he was injuried that he was planning on playing him at LB, at the time I just presumed that it was will Jose wasn’t playing.
But now it wouldn’t surprise me if he had to play him there, I have high hopes for young Fergie but I really do see him as a winger more than a LB.

Troy did Toonsy manage to cut you free from that discarded fishing net ❓

  15. I can’t remember a time when the club owner bought the players he wanted and not the ones the manager wanted, which is what is happening under this regime. It happened to Keegan and it is happening to Pardew. The big question is does Pardew even want any of these unknowns that we’ve bought or been linked with?

      (Quote)

  16. @andrewT

It doesn’t show much of man if he willingly panders to Ashley IMO .

People accuse KK for being a quitter but the alternative is to be a patsy Pards. 😆

      (Quote)

  17. @B&B

At least KK had the balls to stand up and not be a Patsy like Pards.

That is why I maintain KK gets too much stick.

      (Quote)

  18. So would you want Pards to quit in order to show that “he’s a man?”

Who would manage us? Kinnear again? Steve Stone? Maybe Carver, I would be alright with, but he would just have to go along with the same ****!

I actually rate Pardew a bit. I just hope that he can perform while in the shackles he has been put in.

      (Quote)

  19. @andrewT

Pards won’t quit because he was fully aware of the situation when he took the job.

I’m just saying that many managers such as Wenger, morinho, Keegan , Fergy would not put up with it.

But I’ve always maintained, Pards’ role is a coach not a manager.
Graham Carr is Director of Football.

      (Quote)

  20. I think Pards does have some type of say in the players that are brought in. Although I wouldn’t think he would disagree too much with the type of players designated by Carr.

And obviously the big managers in the game wouldn’t put up with these idiots ahead of them. But they are top managers who would be able to get right back into the game if they quit.

And I’ll bring it back again, our squad would be screwed if Pards quit. That would be one more crisis this season to just break down the morale. So please, stop insulting the man who is just trying to get a job done for all of us as best he can.

      (Quote)

  21. thanks toonsy.

There’s just nothing else for the man to do, but put his head down, and do what he can with what he’s given.

Can we just fast-forward to Saturday now? We all know nothing else is going to happen until then.

  23. Just for the sake of sharing the info with everyone because it was at the end of a thread, here is a possible reason that M proposed for the Pieters deal delaying.

    M says:

re. Pieters I read this on twitter yesterday –
‘PSV are holding onto Pieters till after their game on thursday. Should be movement after that..’
This pre-empted the Chron story so I wasn’t surprised to see this again today
Guy who posted it is a Dutch toon fan, he sent it to Mark Douglas of the Journal
Check it out for yerselves if u want – http://twitter.com/#!/Remyw
Point is – maybe it’s not haggling that’s holding things up, maybe it’s just that PSV want to make sure they into the Europa Lg. Either way, can’t see him playing against the mackems…..

      (Quote)

  24. So, it’s not rocket science – we need (not want, but need) a LB & CF
the board & manager are not thick – they know this as well as (possibly better than) anybody else
and AP said (promised) it would be done
    so what is happening?
there are players available – some of whom have stated they want to come to SJP – and we know their quality cos our scouts have looked at them
so what’s the problem? its not as if these players are grossly over-priced or too risky
    is there a plan?
are they waiting to the last minute – either to get the prices down or hopeing that certain players will be offered as a result of a crazy merry -go-round in the last couple of days?
    – it does happen, and the rich clubs have been fairly quiet – perhaps we might (just might) be on a half-promise of someone from say chelsea (loan or sale) if things work out!
    It would explain things
on the other hand, we might just be mean & useless

  26. There’s a bit more light at the end of the tunnel when looking at this transfer that way. It’s PSV’s right to keep their player in order to ensure even more money coming their way through being in European competition, and as a player who has risen at the club, I respect Pieters for sticking around to help with that.

Who knows, there could be a scene similar to Cabaye’s where he’s taken off the field and hugs all his teammates.

Yeah, I may be getting to optimistic, but its better than the alternative, which was really pissin me off and putting me in a crappy mood. This has all mellowed me out a bit.

      (Quote)

  27. I think we can abandon any thoughts of loan moves for Chelsea or ManU players. Sturridge will either stay at Chelsea or play for a side that will totally guarantee that he starts as often as possible. Despite his quality, I don’t think we can completely guarantee this. The same for Macheda.

Something also just bugs me when thinking that Newcastle United need to loan in players. We can attract good enough players to become part of this club. We didn’t loan in anyone last year, and it worked out well. It was also nice to laugh at 5under1and when some important parts of their squad were loan players that they lost after the season was over.
I also don’t like us being used to make other club’s young players better when we have our own who can do a good enough job in certain positions

  28. @AndrewT

    Stop insulting Pardew.? 😕

You miss my point. Im not asking him to quit or want him to quit. I don’t think there’s anybody more qualified in being a patsy than Pardew so why would I want him to quit?

I agree it would cause more problems if he left but that doesn’t take my right away to call h a patsy without being reprimanded by you surely?

      (Quote)

  29. To clarify, we definitely require a patsy coach under this regime otherwise it would be a conveyer belt of sacked managers. 😕

  30. why would that happen witters?

and thanks again, M! Forgot about those trialists. Situ scored against Gateshead too! We need more defenders in the development squad too, so I would be pleased if we signed both of them up

  34. pardew is happy to work under ashleys constraints because he KNOWS with his record that he will never get a bigger job than this one. With some situations the board have been quick, cabaye came in and nolan went, it was a quick turn around. The same with routledge leaving and obertan coming in… the problem… that’s right a fee of over 5 million is involved. The old adage that those with the most money are the most loathe to part with it certainly hold true for ashley. We got 5.5/6 million for enrique depending on which source you believe, but the fat idiot won’t pay it out for a replacement. I pity ferguson because he’s gonna have a lot of pressure on him playing in what isn’t his natural position

  35. AndrewT…given the comments on previous threads & other sites in reaction to the Pieters transfer delay I thought the transfer window had closed! I knew it wasn’t the end of the world cos I’m still here… 😆

  36. There are so many peeps on here who obviously have so much insider knowledge to know intimately about the comings and goings. The only thing certain is:
    1) Ashley will not pay for trophy signings nor do we want them, the whole thing has gone crazy re transfer fees.
    2) Wages are crazy, It is reported Waynetta B is on £90k a week, this thank God got to be a non starter–it seems any new signings £40k is the limit.
3)We cannot compete on transfer fees, salaries, kudos, our location,European Football etc. The only thing we have to offer is US!!
    4) Ashley`s made it clear whether you like it or not, the club will be self sufficient.
5)Any player coming in will need to have a residual transfer fee at least to the level we paid for him.
6)Clubs know we need a LB and Striker and as such they are playing hardball for the best deal they can get.
I still maintain I prefer our strategy to Scum and under the circumstances I think Pardew is doing a bloody good job, rather than being a PATSY I would call him TOLERANT and PRAGMATIC—support the bloody team, that`s your job. There will be no regime change any time soon. Accept it.

  37. our good news for tomorrow will probably be that we signed some French teenagers for the development squad. That will be the positive momentum to get us excited to take on the mackems!

still so pathetic. I wouldn’t even be that excited if we brought in this Maiga striker, if I’m honest.

      (Quote)

  38. I have made my views on Pardew on many threads so I wont reitterate them
The problems as I see them are on getting the players we are after I think most of them are willing to come, what are low wages for premiership players
are good for French asnd Dutch players Our negotiating team dont seem to know when to wheeler deal and when to pay the asking price We need a left back i wouldnt say it was an absolute necessity before Sunderland but we desperately a striker asap ,the best I have seen from the names bandied about recently is the young striker from Sochaux he s 23 years old strong quick with a good shot and a powerful header better I think Than bentdner or Crouch but the french league isnt the premiership so it would be abig gamble
i hope we risk it because he is the type of player I can see someone taking a chance on him and then coming toSJP to haunt us

      (Quote)

  39. AndrewT – nobody seems to be saying Pards is the problem. I think it is wrong to call for his sacking for the same reason I think it is wrong to boycott the games by staying away. It simply worries me greatly that the owners are having so much say in what are solely footballing matters, something that they know very little about.

      (Quote)

  40. B&B, I agree with you! It really is ridiculous that an owner of retail stores and a casino manager are able to have such a strong voice when it comes to the players that come and even stay at Newcastle United.

Unfortunately, we’re just stuck with this lot right now. Nothing else to do but support the lads who are here.

I don’t think he’ll even be anywhere near the derby game this weekend.

  43. witters, not saying that they choose the players to target, just how we go for them and how they’re treated by the club once they’re here.

      (Quote)

  44. Listen guys, we are stuck with them. This is not a PLC, you cannot buy shares and obtain enough to oust them. It is a privately owned limited company and Ashley can do what the bloody hell he likes and you can do jack **** about it.
Don`t tell me the way is to boycott games, merchandise etc. bacause that will be a self fullfilling prophecy, ie; less money coming in= less money to spend. In addition , if you think it`s hard to attract good players now think of the message we will be sending out to prospective new signings.
The more you give Ashley and co. ****, the more he is likely to go against you.
Why don`t you change tactic, praise the buggas for saving our club, running it prudently ETC. Don`t care how rich you are, everyone wants to be liked.and if he receives positive signals instead of constant ridicule and abuse he might just think, hell I`m enjoying this let`s increase the anti and go to the next level ie; Top 6 should be our new target!

Granted, he COULD continue to be an **** and just take the money to pay his loans back and get out. Who knows. But the negative attacks don’t help us, the players, manager, etc. It makes us sort of feel good to scream out our attitude toward a DESPICABLE person, but it doesn’t do anything productive other than **** the man off and want to stick it to us.

I absolutely agree with the idea of HBA spending more time with us. I also think that as we now have a dressing room full of guys that are strangers at best, to a massive derby atmosphere, that as many players as we can spare should be at the game this weekend. Those that dont play will be able to feel the needles and know what is expected of them when they do get the nod. Sticking with my prediction, 1-2.

  49. Yeah, Jachin. I just feel that he isn’t experiencing what the club is about, what the new team ethos is about, what kind of discipline changes Pardew might be going through with Barton’s twitterings.
Hatem Ben Arfa needs to be at the club, being pushed to recover quicker by seeing his team mates getting ready for Premier League games. I think that is where the “5-6 weeks” have come from. He isn’t seeing the pressure to recover, so he may be taking things a bit lighter than he should considering the hope that he represents for NUFC

      (Quote)

  50. Witters – it strikes me that Pardew is simply grateful to get any player through the door, no matter what and no matter who, such are the financial contraints. I’m not saying he has no input, but everything points to the fact that Llambias is chosing the players who come and the players who go, and Pardew is simply grateful or disappointed accordingly. Don’t forget that it was Pardew who said that Carrol was going nowhere, and he wanted to make the signings of Barton, Enrique and Nolan his top priority.

Besides, when you are injured, who is the best person to decide how and where you should recuperate?

I don’t know, I just feel like he’s putting his feet up a little too much right now.

Although maybe he’s over there encouraging more players to sign for the Toon. And if that’s the case, then keep at it Agent Ben Arfa

Why do you think that’s the case? Pardew has essentially said that Ba and Obertan were his doing, whereas Maveaux, Cabaye and Abeid seem like Carr to me. same with some of the others we’ve chased and didn’t get. I think the size of the transfer kitty (or lack of), and unwillingness to pay a certain fee can be blamed on Llambiase, but evidence doubtful he is identifying targets.
