Let’s all laugh at Sunderland! Sunderland 0-1 Newcastle.

Raylor celebrates the winner at Sunderland.
Today we saw everything the defines a local derby. Guts and glory, blood and thunder, tough tackles and tight play. It was there for us all to see.

And you want to know the best thing? We beat the scum in their own back yard again. Steve Bruce will have to upgrade his CD player to a more technologically advanced medium if he ever wants us to hear the song he has in waiting for us. ******.

Newcastle made one change for the game as Demba Ba dropped out allowing Gabriel Obertan to make his full Premier League debut whilst the hosts remained unchanged from the 1-1 draw with Liverpool as Asamoah Gyan recovered from the injury he picked up last week and was proved fit enough to start.

It was Sunderland who edged the early exchanges. Spurred on by a rare full house at the Stadium of Light they set about taking the game to their local rivals. Chances followed but they were unable to convert them through a combination of poor finishing and poor final ball with a bit of bad luck thrown in for good measure. Not that I minded that of course.

Eventually the initial onslaught subsided and Newcastle managed to even up the run of play a little. To his credit referee Howard Webb tried his best to allow the game to run, but with the amount of tackles flying in it was only going to be a matter of time before he produced his wallet from his top pocket. That is about all of the credit I will give Webb however.

You see I dislike Howard Webb. I cringed when I saw it was he who was officiating the game this afternoon. I was proved right halfway through the first-half when Webb and his linesman managed to somehow not see a blatant handball on the Sunderland goal-line by Seb Larsson.

Yohan Cabaye fred in a deep corner which Joey Barton headed towards goal. His effort was cleared over the bar by Larsson’s hand which resulted in a mass protest by the Newcastle players. They had a point aswell. It was obvious without the need of a TV replay although they confirmed what was initially thought. Had it been spotted then Sunderland would surely have been down to ten men and would have had to face a penalty.

Having said that, Newcastle were also lucky to finish the half with a full compliment of players after Yohan Cabaye smashed through Phil Bardsley with raised studs. The former Lille man had been getting stuck in accordingly throughout the match and deserves to have shaken off any notion of him being a tackle dodging Frenchman, but his foot was knee high with studs showing. In the end both teams were fortunate so I guess they cancel each other out although the handball was certainly the clearest offence and the one that left less to interpretation.

In terms of goalmouth action in the first half there wasn’t too much to report. Most of the action was restricted to long range efforts as Sunderland threatened twice from Asamoah Gyan and once through Stephane Sessegnon who was denied by Tim Krul with a fine reflex save. In return Yohan Cabaye had a decent shot for us but it was never really in danger of beating Mignolet in the Sunderland goal whilst Shola Ameobi headed wide from point blank range although he was flagged offside so it wouldn’t have counted anyway.

There were no changes at half-time and the second half got under way in much the same way as the first as the home crowd frothed and fizzed their team on. Their onslaught didn’t last as long as the first half though and Newcastle soon started eeking their way into the game.

Gabriel Obertan, Joey Barton, Jonas Gutierrez were all much improved from their first-half performances, and it was the latter of three who had a hand in the goal when he was brought down by Lee Cattermole. Ryan Taylor despatched the resulting free-kick over the despairing Simon Mignolet and into the top corner of his net to send the away fans into raptures.

From then on you could see the heads drop on the Sunderland players. It was joyous. From then on it was as if we were the home side and they were the away side as we took control of the game and even threatened to extend the lead thanks to the pace of Gabriel Obertan and hold up play of Shola Ameobi as Sunderland grew more and more desperate.

That desperation boiled over into frustration in the last ten minutes as Phil Bardsley rather ferociously tackled Fabricio Coloccini. It was late and was only worthy of a yellow card, but it was his second yellow card of the game and, as we all know, that meant he was off. It didn’t matter anyway as Newcastle saw out the game with relative ease and arguably should have wrapped it up after good work from Ameobi sent Gosling clear on goal only for Mignolet to deny him.

Not to worry. 1-0 will do for me and that’s the way it stayed.

I thought Tim Krul was good today. He made a couple of cracking saves and looked confident when he had to deal with anything. Ryan Taylor did alright again as cover at left-back and will obviously go down in derby day folklore thanks to his goal today. Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini were once again very good together whilst Yohan Cabaye did what he had to do diligently and got stuck in when needed. I wonder if he’ll be the top tackling Premier League midfielder for a second week running?

Gabriel Obertan improved in the second half, as did Joey Barton and Cheik Tiote. Shola was also very good today and caused the Sunderland defence no end of problems with his hold up play and running although he did also manage to be normal Shola on occasion and cause frustration. My wife thought I’d been stabbed when he missed that header!

Also I think Alan Pardew deserves a pat on the back for this one. It’s been a tough week for him and he has been on the end of some criticism from fans, but I think he called the tactics pretty much bang on today. You’re very rarely going to dominate an away match in the Premier League, and our tactics were setup specifically to nullify Sunderland and take advantage on the break. We saw that in the second half.

So bragging right are still ours then I see? No change there then really…

Two games, four points, no goals conceded. Why the drama? Just kidding!

Jersey I’m gona be less friendly:

Krul – 7.5 solid game, no special saves but always in the right place.
Simmo- 5 did ok defensively but kicks the ball away soon as he gets it
Saylor- 6 looks out of sorts the first 20mins but came right at the end
Colo- 8.5 another great display from our Captain in defense
Raylor- 7 gets extra points for a terrific freekick which swayed momentum
Obertan- 6 very poor first half, but did a lot of running second half and held the ball up well, he shouldn’t be dribbling 1-0 up so did the right thing.
Barton- 5 for me was bad today, passing terribly off
Tiote- 4 shocking first 60 minutes, looked terrible and caught in possession for dwelling on the ball, but last 20minutes came right.
Cabaye- 7 for me, he did the work Joey and Tiote didn’t in the middle, and impressed me. Ok he didn’t set up three, but he was great in defense.
Jonas- 9 great game helping out Raylor and our best link from defense to attack, also set up the goal, and frustrated to Scum players no end.
Shola- 7 decent game for Shola, as usual against the Scum. So we should drop him till we meet at St James now. 😉

Gosling: 6 looked lively as he should only getting 10 minutes.

  2. From BBC Sport live text page:

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew on Magpies’ matchwinner Ryan Taylor’s goal against Sunderland:

“That right foot of his is a fantastic weapon. We are playing him at left-back and we are looking to bring in another, but he will have to be a good one to take Ryan out of the team.”

  3. Good read Toonsy lad keep up the good work 😉 Im glad that Raylor scored as I hope that will let fans see a better side of his game when he gets a chance, As for Cabaye I dont know if it was all the chats that he has been having with Joey B has got him fired up for today, or is it just part of his normal game but I was proud of the way he got tore in for a smallish guy he never shirked a tackle. 😉
Im also happy for Pards and I hope he gets a wee bit of credit for today

You are a bit harsh but consistent. Not really bothered about individuals win as a team lose as a team

  6. I see SMB each day and they all thought it was a formality they would turn us over. Idiots.
Bruce has spent money but what has it got them.
Not saying that the penny pinching policy of Ashley is correct either

  7. We’re lucky Colo survived that tbh, if we’d won but lost him for a long stretch it would have been a tough victory.

A good left back to replace Raylor? Hmm….then again, Raylor managed something in two matches which Enrique didn’t all of last season…score a bloody goal!

  8. “That right foot of his is a fantastic weapon. We are playing him at left-back and we are looking to bring in another, but he will have to be a good one to take Ryan out of the team.” does this mean another excuse so that we dont have to buy another left back.

  9. In other news.

Goal! Aston Villa 2, Blackburn Rovers 0. Emile Heskey (Aston Villa) right footed shot from outside the box to the bottom right corner. Assisted by Gabriel Agbonlahor.

    😯 😯 😯

  10. imagine if we got a good striker and then got benny fit!!! we couldnt beat themackems last season with nolan , carroll and enrique but could 2day hmmmmmmmmmmm 😆 😆 😆

  11. cant waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit til match of the day 😀

  12. Great win today from the lads. Each player played their part! I’m absolutely buzzing! It’s nice looking down on most of the teams, after two games 😆

      (Quote)

  13. Wow JJ that is a harsh assessment of a winning derby team.

Simmo did better than 5/10. Another clean sheet for the defence.
Tiote gave 100% and really came good in the last 20mins so 4/10 isn’t right.
He’ll be immense from now on.
Cabaye dispelled my worries about the French lads with that aggressive tackle … all be it a tad late 🙂

Shola was poor again … for a striker to be offside as often as he is is just lazy. Reserves for Shola until the next derby! 5/10

Obertan fast but useless. Much prefer Gosling.
Barton was better than 5/10 but only just.

    Where’s Vuckic?

Tiote-Cabaye-Gosling-Marveaux-Abeid-HBA-Vuckic for me are the future of NUFC.

Obertan & Joey to play if required …

    15M striker asap.

Forget the LB until January, goals are more important, we’ll get by at LB.

      (Quote)

  14. @9….no it’s called praising a player who had a decent game out of position and scored the winning goal 🙄

      (Quote)

  15. Disagree geoff , we need both but left back should be priority. We need a good defense to build on , which i think we have once we sort left back. Think there is goals in the team at the moment , not that I would argue with a 15-20 goal striker coming in 🙂

      (Quote)

  16. @Josho Toon

Don’t see the goals from our strikers.

If we only have 15M to spend I’d spend it all on a striker unless a LB like N.Taylor is available fo 1M.

Cisse from Freiburg 15M rather than Maitia from Souchaux 9M.

    Check the stats.

Raylor is doing okay, lets buy a good striker!!!

      (Quote)

  17. Hopefully thats Raylor’s critics silenced for at least a week. Another clean sheet and 3 points above the monkeys. Lets hope it stays that way. 😀

      (Quote)

  18. DJG, I think he has played really well for us in the last couple of games considering that he is not a LB

      (Quote)

  19. Richie @ 18 agree 100% and I knew as soon as I heard what Pards had said that he couldn’t win no matter what he said, He tried to give credit to Raylor that was playing out of position and big him up a bit, the sameway he did with Saylor last year.
Would people have prefered for him to say Raylor played well but we need to get a LB in asap because Raylor wasn’t good enough ?
Fuk me give him a break he is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t

      (Quote)

  20. areet Lads n Lasses. Just in from work 👿
Managed to listen to match on radio. Nearly crashed the wagon when we scored. Fantastic result
When I got back to the depot, all the makems had faces like smacked arses. Priceless 😆

Great great day, really over the moon. And I think we deserved it in the end.
Happy days are here again 😛 😀

      (Quote)

  21. Toonsy how could you possibly slag him off again after the last two games. Oh dear. Woo WOO WOO WOO All aboard the alternative reality bus.

      (Quote)

  22. Just kidding. Well he is but he has shut me up for a bit 😆

If there is one thing it shows its that Jonas Gutierrez is vitally important on that left side. Maybe Enrique was fortunate to have him there in front of him?

Funny but I remember someone on the match thread saying how no goals would come from our left side yet it was the two left sided players who earned the free kick and scored the goal.

On Pardew, I agree. Damned either way. Sometimes I feel people want us to lose so they can have a pop. Pure paranoia and speculation and coming to their own conclusion.

      (Quote)

  23. Tiote a 4? he pulled it around 2nd half, made some great blocks, a 6 at least.

Who needs another left back?? the words of MA after the game.. 😯

Cracking result, now we have 11 days to sign 2 players, why the worry

Toon Toon on wards and upward form here, 3pts next week.. might go top! 😯 😯 😆

      (Quote)

  24. Dave..exactly mate 😉 …..just reading RTG, almost feel sorry for them……like f*ck 😆

      (Quote)

  25. Big Dave- that’s cabaye’s style. It wasn’t just the derby. He’s a box to box type who can play deep or more attacking. He often played Tiote’s role for Lille. He’s a good tackler.
What I liked as well from him was the times he came in to defend teammates. Shows his leadership qualities as well.
we could really have a tough mid field to deal with. Cabaye Tiote and Barton are tough to break down and yohan and Joey can bag some goals as well. Once cabaye builds some chemistry we’ll be very very strong there

      (Quote)

  26. I would rather have a fully commited Raylor at LB than the non-commited Jose that we had for the second half of last season

would you? i wouldnt! we played the mackems.. great diplay from Raylor but even Pards said..i hope he doesnt play next week..which was a little harsh

      (Quote)

  27. And I can slag him off because I don’t care about one off performances. I see the bigger picture 😎

      (Quote)

  28. sounded like Jonas had a good game, but the whole team were committed and that was what won thru in the end.

Plastic makem in his primark suit, 1st for sack imo.

      (Quote)

  29. Although fair play to Raylor. He shut me up today which I’m over the moon about. Doesn’t make me wrong though 😉

      (Quote)

  30. So what is the picture from these two games Toonsy? We have kept 2 clean sheets and he has scored the winner against the mackems. I would say that was pretty good going for a makeshift LB who is ‘****’ wouldn’t you?

      (Quote)

  31. To be fair Toonsy, shola was more **** than Raylor, so you should get on his case for a change.
Start off with his shots on goal stats. ZERO 👿
2 yr contract extension my ****

      (Quote)

  32. Sessegnon an Gyan are two clever players, shame they’re pretty similar, It was like watchin Martins and Lua Lua play 2gether, If Caulflower face continues with that front line I can see them having problems.

Canny little players but if theyre snuffed-out soon enough there isnt much threat. But why have 2 players up front when u can have man-mountain Shola holding the line. 😆

      (Quote)

  33. Mark @ 35 so you would rather have Jose’s half hearted performance when it was clear he didn’t want to be here ❓ ❓
Toonsy @ 29 you make a couple of good points there

      (Quote)

  34. Zoe – I actually think Taylor has done well, but I think people are overestimating his performances to try and get back at me for being on his case for so long.

I note people are choosing to ignore tge use of his elbow which could have seen us down to ten men, plus tge numerous other mistimed challenges 🙂

    Besides. I just won’t publish it 😛

    Just kidding 😉

      (Quote)

  35. Absolutely fantastic, to stick it up them in their own back yard is as good as it gets, we have had a week of bragging mackems on the phone ins using an escape from a Liverpool hiding as optimism, well this is a massive kick in the nuts for them and i cant wait for Monday teatime to hear what they have to say.
Imagine what the result could have been if Larson had been rightly sent off, my black cloud has suddenly disappeared.

  36. Toonsy: I’m not having a go at you, I thought he was a very lucky boy to be still on the pitch though.

    Haha very funny!!!

Aye, I would m8. Jose even said in an article yesterday that he wasnt bothered if he had to see out his year here, which I believe.

He did just get fined a couple of weeks wages, he’s probs pi**ed off over it.
We would only of waited 11 days, once he knew he’s here for anotha year I’m sure his performances would of lifed.

But..i’m not having a go a Raylor, just Enrique is one of the best for me. Shame we didnt match his ambition with a bumper contract..but thats another story.

      (Quote)

  38. It was fantastic to watch some of the mackems start to leave early again from their own ground! Surely they must be used to it by now. Great team performance. Thought Jonas was great in front of Raylor who also played well. Colo great at the back and Obertan had some good touches as did Cabaye. All in all a job well done.

      (Quote)

  39. If Gosling had of been on 10 mins earlier, he might of been composed enuff to take that chance, but 1-0 was enough.. 😛 at this rate we’ll be in Europe by xmas 😀

      (Quote)

  40. DJG – I think Raylor suffers from being versatile because he has never had one position to even try and nail down. Personally I dint think he is any type of full back – right or left. Midfield maybe?

Zoe – Not you having a go. I meant others 😉

      (Quote)

  41. Toonsy just incase you think I was trying to get one over you, I know Raylor isn’t our answer and yes I do see his weak points but what I see in him is that he always gives 100 % and for me that will do for when we need him, but it wouldn’t stop me from wanting better 😉
Anyway I thought you were resonable about him in the article, but maybe DJG is causing you to fight back 😆

      (Quote)

  42. I think he at least deserves another game. Yes I agree, he is Beckham like at times and other times poor but he has started off this season with a bang, credit where credits due.

      (Quote)

  43. @toonsy

Deffo not a fullback, too careless. A midfielder maybe, just not a very good one. Great reserve player, excellent Championship player 😀

      (Quote)

  44. Toonsy: no worries 😉

Mark I agree with you about Gosling, to be fair to mignolet he stood up really well to deny him. I thought Gosling looked very lively and he seemed to be getting forward a bit. Is he worth a try against fulham instead of obertan?

      (Quote)

  45. Toonsy, did u say he is Beckham like at times?, I thought u thought u said he shud be shot with hot sh** 😆

      (Quote)

  46. Mark @ 52 he might have said he wouldn’t have been bothered about staying here, but what did you expect him to say ? he looked to me as if he couldn’t wait to get out of the place 😉

      (Quote)

  47. @Zoë Vicarage

Yes, I like the look of Gosling. Had a great Pre-season.

Seems like we have a lot of decent reserve players to come through.

      (Quote)

  48. No way in hell would I let Raylor go at right back. He’s suited to left because Jonas can do all his running for him, Simpson is, fortunately, rapid enough to cover for the fact that he rarely gets any support on his wing. If we stuck Raylor at right back we’d get massacred.

I said last week that he put in a good shift and made some strong tackles, and maybe he can make something of left back, but i still consider him only a stop-gap. If he were on the right alongside Jonas then that would be fine…but that would involve too much tinkering and i think Simpson is a much better player than people give him credit for. Still, maybe Raylor can put in some good performances and maybe let us make a bit more of our numerous free kicks.

      (Quote)

  49. While i have to applaude raylor for the goal and his effort in the opening 2 games of the season , i still think we will be in trouble in the long run without a proper LB signed up . As TOONSY @29 says without Jonas down the left we would of been weak on that side . I also love the fact that Carroll was subbed today for the bindippers and the guy that came on for him scored . Wonder how much time he will get before the scousers start slagging him off if he fails to score .

      (Quote)

  50. @Big Dave

that could be very true m8 but I believe he liked it here and if we had of signed players to take us to another level, not just the next level + offered him a good wage, he might of stayed.. but who knows

      (Quote)

  51. @Mark Yeah he did, for me barton could partner cabaye as tiote still looked off the pace so perhaps Gosling could partner jonas and whoever else is on the wing
