Barton signs for QPR.

How long before he is kissing QPR's badge?
Joey Barton has left Newcastle and has joined Queens Park Rangers on a four-year deal.

To be fair it’s been a long time coming, and whilst I don’t really believe he wants to go to QPR judging by what I’ve seen and heard of him in recent days, I can’t say that I’m surprised that he has gone. To QPR yes, but in general, no. Where is this Champions League club he wanted?

They’ve got a good player so fair play to them. They’ll get a committed performer who will give his all on the pitch but will need a lot of attention off the pitch. If Neil Warnock and Co can keep a handle on Barton then they will have a real asset on their hands, and all for absolutely no transfer fee aswell. Absolute bloody bargain if you ask me.

As for Newcastle, whilst I do think we’ll miss his influence I don’t think we’ll miss his ability. His ability to motivate maybe, but technically he isn’t, and never has been, that great. In fact it’s since the sale of Andy Carroll that his affect on the team has dropped, and by that I mean the amount of assists he got.

It’s hard to see how Joey Barton will really fit into our midfield once we get either Gabriel Obertan or Sylvain Marveaux up to speed anyway. These are dedicated wingers who can get to the byline and caused problems with pace. Look in the middle and we have Yohan Cabaye and Cheik Tiote as a first choice pairing with Dan Gosling and a few others as backup I fell we could just about be ok. Maybe I’m trying to think we’ll be ok?

So a four year deal it is then which gives Barton the chance of a bit of security. I really can’t blame him for that at all. Remember he was available on a free transfer and with no sign of a change in stance from Newcastle I can’t really fault him for looking after himself.

So thanks for everything Joey. I hope you continue the hard work and I hope you can stay on the rails. We’ll see you again soon enough as we’re down your neck of the woods in a few weeks time I can’t wait to here these tales that you were telling us about. Something about the truth? Let us know, just please don’t say that you were pushed out after making such a defiant stance about how a contract can be sat on and how you couldn’t be forced to go anywhere.

In terms of Newcastle, another player out and another day with nobody in. They’ll have to pull something out of the hat in terms of transfer activity although past experience tells me that it just won’t happen. Shame really as this summer could have been great and could have given us a platform to build on instead of having to rebuild an entirely new platform.

Will it work though?

  1. Joey’s a good-to-very good player, but sometimes his technical ability gets blown out of proportion, I think.

His heart, drive and commitment on the field will be hard to match. That kind of intangible thing is hard to replace.

  2. Whatever anyone says we will miss him as a player – as a person I’m not too sure. Was he a bad influence off the pitch? Dunno but which ever way we cut it we have lost our four most influential (on the pitch) players in the last 8 months.

Tough for any team to get over that.

  3. Not much more to say about Barton after this. Barton was another one of the core players along with Jose, Carroll, and Nolan that Pardew spoke of repeatedly last season. These were the players that he felt Newcastle had to keep hold of to do well in the Prem. What does that say about his influence in the team? And more importantly what does it say about Ashley’s football ambition? It says he doesn’t have any. Ashley is strictly an account balancer and risk taker. We are in a huge position of risk now with an even thinner squad with nothing but youngsters on the bench. Gosling is not ready yet. Neither is Marveaux or even Ba.So some promising youngsters but almost no veterans to help us through bad patches. No cover on defense and very little attack from the strikers to date. Without Raylor’s goals we would be in a very different position today. Pardew looks a worried, stressed man to me? Do you blame him?

  4. Toonsy,i got an idea, not sure is it good.

why not like do an article,of every player who left newcastle, and write down those key events, what the player does etc.

1 example would be like the recent departure of barton. Time-line. from the moment he join till he left what he does.Key events.

A article “tribute” some sort for the player. 😉

  5. Joey probably had no other option, they were the only club that wanted him, if he stayed here and suffered a serious injury he would be left in a bad situation.

Sad to see him go because he was my favourite player since he joined but things move on, it’s not as big as a blow as people are making it out to be. Personally I don’t think we need to replace him considering he was used out wide; Jonas, Obertan, Marveaux and Ben Arfa (when he’s back…) can all play on the right if needed.

I’m sure Mike and Derek will be having a few drinks tonight to celebrate that he’s gone, they better hurry their backsides up and sign Pieters and the striker though.

  6. Without brilliant stops from Krul last night we would have been completely embarrassed by a division one side. They could easily have scored 3 or 4 goals against a lesser keeper. Keep that in mind when thinking about what players we need. If we get nobody in before the window closes I will revise my estimate of our finishing position from ninth to fifteenth. I think we are in serious trouble now and consider it unlikely we will get a decent striker in. I ‘m hopeful about Pieters based on his agent’s statements, but strikers aren’t cheap and we are.

  9. I was watching the match in a pub called ‘Sammy’s’ in Sunderland with two scunny fans. 😆 What a second half! I was so relieved when we equalised. 🙂 I thought Simpson had his best ever game for us, Best showed some good touches if little else, Vuckic and Sammy were running the show at the end. 🙂

  10. It must be Friday night. I completely agree with Stuart @5

Slightly sad to see him go, but it’s best for all parties and it’ll be fun to watch what happens without it being linked to our club for a change. No doubt we’ll miss his ability to set the tempo, but we have good replacements in other ways.

Ho hum. Need to see some good players in now; the buzz from Sammy’s goal will wear off soon…

      (Quote)

  11. Vukic and Sammy bossed it, and I think Tayls showed how important he can be too. Just need a striker who can do the banjo/cows **** thing and we’ll be fine.

Anyone else beginning to freak out a bit over how good Raylor’s been? 😯

What a right foot! Where’s it been for the last 3 years??

      (Quote)

  12. DJG @13 Simpson made some huge blunders. He got himself turned wrong and tried to backheel a high ball! That nearly allowed another Scunthorpe goal. I thought he was quite poor. He must learn to play better positionally. Scunny were very effective attacking down his side which is frightening considering they are a league one team! Defensively both Simpson and Raylor were hopeless. Raylor only offers his free kick skills. That is why he has never been in the first team but now we are so thin he has to be in there.

  13. Its a sad day for us. I dont blame joey i would have gone too if i had been placed on the transfer list.

      (Quote)

  14. Wow love your optimism lads but that was a division one side and we barely beat them in extra time. Without Krul, Colo and Cabaye we would have been lost. A lot of the players looked extremely shaky at best. Gosling is nowhere near ready for the first team. Ba looks lost. Are we sure that really is Ba? Does he have a twin brother that doesn’t play football by any chance? Based on Best’s shooting the net must be about 3 feet wide. Pardew has his work cut out for him. Whatever they are paying him it isn’t enough.

      (Quote)

  15. was genuinely looking forward to this summers transfer activity! I’d say if we’d brought in the players we had already plus Gameiro and kept Enrique and Barton we’d be heading for a full frontal siege on Europe! At what extra cost? Roughly 15 million? Cheers Mike, and of course Derek. All the best!

  16. On his day Joey could be very good but I thought that he was tailing off somewhat.. Nevertheless he has done a superb job for us. More sorry to lose him than Nolan whom I believe is already being criticized by some West Ham fans. Joey did shoot himself in the foot though with his twittering.

      (Quote)

  17. On the pitch i don’t think in terms of ability Joey will be missed ,but he will be in terms of drive and determination. If we are to replace him, i would rather we spent money on 2 strikers. Someone who puts the fear of god into the opposition. Not like Mike and Del boy who put the fear of god into their customers.

      (Quote)

  18. Well Raylor has been saying for a long time that he wanted to play fullback and now he has got his chance , he is taking it and proving to be decent at it . When we wrap up the Pieters deal we now have decent backup in that position for the first time in years ( ferguson is a winger imo ). As for Joey leaving i think it is for the best , he is a good player but the baggage he brings is just too much , with Cabaye , Vuckic, Hba and Tiote in cm i think we have enough fight and skill to not miss joey .

      (Quote)

  19. Anyone else beginning to freak out a bit over how good Raylor’s been?

even Toonsy likes him now 😯

Joey’s talent I think is overstated, but his heart and work rate are top class. We will miss his energy, though little else I reckon.

  20. Well -the uprising of player power was squashed like a worm.

Let’s hope their judgement in the replacement players proves correct and justified. On the face of it – I’m hopeful for the future.

      (Quote)

  22. I don’t want to underplay Joey’s effect on team morale and his influence on the pitch through his ability and will to win, but let’s remember he’s effectively played 1 full season in 4 years at a cost of what to the club in terms of wages. In addition, he’s constantly criticised the club and owner publicly (which no player should be allowed to get away with), even after the club supported him during the bad years. The overall strength of the squad is a concern with lots of young players and unproven signings at this stage; however, NUFC has survived before and will post Barton.

MA might be a gambler and in some eyes is taking a real risk with our PL status this season; however, the transfer window isn’t yet closed and therefore it is not entirely fair to judge our tranfer dealings until Thursday AM. I feel a bit for Pardew as the mouthpiece, but do quite like what he is trying to do with the team (adding pace, youth and players with a desire to prove themselves in a new league/country). I also believe that footballers have had it far too easy for too long, that somebody needs to get a grip of their expectations and also consider the financial implications to the club (history shows that good teams can be relegated also – our recent experience was a perfect example).

Good luck Joey Barton – but bring on Fulham and hopefully another 3 points.

      (Quote)

  23. We will miss Joey for his style of play, enthusiasm and his experience. He’s was class for us last season and I’m sure he will be a good signing for QPR.

I will concede that we could get away with not replacing Barton as long as no one else leaves from the midfield.

Personally I’m still not convinced by Simpson, but he is still young and hopefully he will get better with age….Cant use his age as an excuse for much longer though. On current form I think Raylor should be given the chance at right back. His defending seems to of improved and he is better going forward than Simpson. He also seems to have finally learned how to take decent free kick against teams not called Newcastle (yes i know its only 2 scored so far this season but his general delivery seems to of improved.)

Williamson getting a knock worried me last night one more injury in central defence and we will be in deep trouble especially as Kadar seems to of disappeared/injured.

At least 3 needed (LB, ST, CB) but i think we might have to be happy with 2…..if we get that many! 😕

  26. I geniunely believe that Barton did love his time here, and would have stayed if given the opportunity, the problem was and always will be our owner. I do not believe in any walk of life you should be held to ransom, but sometimes a bit of flexibility either way Is the best way to work things out. Our club does not seem to work like this , it’s their way or the highway.

  27. Has Pieters arrived yet? 😕

Supposed to be having a medical today. 😛

Less than 40 hrs to go. 🙄

  28. You cannot and should not have to put up with a player that says and does just what he wants. This transfer is just another example, the whole thing has been played out on Twitter, where else has that happened. It is just utterly unprofessional and only shines a bad light on us.

Secondly, this team just needs some time to bed down now, they will probably create their own new, probably collective character, different from everything circling around Barton and Nolan.

I think Cabaye, Tiote and Ben Arfa will not only be good players for us but will in time probably also become good leaders. If we can be lucky enough to get away with getting some good results when we are not playing that well and the team is just bedding in, then hopefully we should be fine later.

A team of Krul, R.Taylor, Taylor, Collo, Pieters, Guiterrez, Tiote, Cabaye, Marveaux, Ben Arfa and Ameiobi is quite strong (although another striker would be blo-dy useful).

I for one just look forward to reading about football again, not Barton, money, this and that, we’ve got not a bad little squad, it certainly could be deeper, but it is also exciting that we have some good young players coming through.

The boys upstairs have got rid of the main lads they didn’t want around, all lets not forget both Barton and Nolan were offered contracts, which for differing reasons they didn’t want, they could have both still been here, maybe not on the terms they liked but that’s life, they chose otherwise. Nolan wasn’t worth a 4-5 year contract, he thought he was, Barton just kept going too far and his offer was taken back. If he had signed that contract we would be here with same squad plus Joey, he didn’t, he’s now at QPR!

Let’s hope we can build on the squad we have got now. It is now a squad associated with Ashley and his regime, with is manager, let’s see what he does from here.

  29. These signing’s would be my preferred choice’s:

    1) Cissokho – left back. (prefer him over pieters because of his offensive skills)

    2) Santon – right back. (If pardew want’s the team to play more attractive passing football, we need a new right back, who has passing skills)

    3) A striker with pace & control. (Carr please find a hidden gem)

Don’t think we need to replace Joey, LB-RB and striker most be our main target’s.

  31. Thanks 🙂

    Doubt it too… 🙁

Will prefer a left and a right back this window. Think all our main striker target’s have gone, so don’t wan’t us to buy one just for the sake of it. Then wait til January or next summer and try again.

Maybe use one of the young one’s as our second striker instead?

      (Quote)

  32. Welcome Steffen!! 😛

I agree that we defo need a LB and a striker and i would love to see Santon come in for RB but personally i think center back is a bigger priority than RB.

Hopefully once a left back comes in Raylor will push Simpson for the right back spot which can only make both players move forward. Personally i prefer Raylor on current form.

It would be nice to see the club bring in a decent CB that can also cover right back like Onuoha or Tomkins from West Ham??

I personally wasn’t impressed with Simmo last night or any other night for that matter. Just my opinion but he doesn’t seem to be improving as much as we need him 2. Raylor deserves his chance at right back and in my opinion he has earned it.

His free kicks seem to have improved both in shooting and getting the ball into the right areas from set pieces to cause the opposition problems.

  50. Simmo was shocking defensively. A real liabilty, problem is he has no real competition in his position. He could be our downfall this season, definately overrated.

As for Barton, said it all along: Good riddance you lunatic.

Slightly concerned about lack of new signings now. Will make no judgement until the window slams shut but will be bitterly disappointed if the board miss the boat to turn us from a club capable finishing anywhere from 17th to 12th, to a club capable of sneaking into the top 7th or 8th.

      (Quote)

  51. Aye Big Dave, Simpson has been fed a load of bollocks, probably by Pardew about being good enough for England (not that England are great). He is not good enough for the Prem. A squad player at best. We are in trouble at both left and right back. We also now have no cover at CB and are considerably weaker at midfield. No doubt Barton was a pain in the ****, however we have nobody ready to replace him and he was last season’s player of the year for us if I recall correctly? This season is now going to be an almighty struggle. Can’t see us getting more than Pieters and a cheap substandard striker in. I hope to be surprised though. Maybe Derek can offer to streak naked across the pitch before the start of the Fulham game? That’s about all he is good for.
