Barton signs for QPR.

How long before he is kissing QPR's badge?
Joey Barton has left Newcastle and has joined Queens Park Rangers on a four-year deal.

To be fair it’s been a long time coming, and whilst I don’t really believe he wants to go to QPR judging by what I’ve seen and heard of him in recent days, I can’t say that I’m surprised that he has gone. To QPR yes, but in general, no. Where is this Champions League club he wanted?

They’ve got a good player so fair play to them. They’ll get a committed performer who will give his all on the pitch but will need a lot of attention off the pitch. If Neil Warnock and Co can keep a handle on Barton then they will have a real asset on their hands, and all for absolutely no transfer fee aswell. Absolute bloody bargain if you ask me.

As for Newcastle, whilst I do think we’ll miss his influence I don’t think we’ll miss his ability. His ability to motivate maybe, but technically he isn’t, and never has been, that great. In fact it’s since the sale of Andy Carroll that his affect on the team has dropped, and by that I mean the amount of assists he got.

It’s hard to see how Joey Barton will really fit into our midfield once we get either Gabriel Obertan or Sylvain Marveaux up to speed anyway. These are dedicated wingers who can get to the byline and caused problems with pace. Look in the middle and we have Yohan Cabaye and Cheik Tiote as a first choice pairing with Dan Gosling and a few others as backup I fell we could just about be ok. Maybe I’m trying to think we’ll be ok?

So a four year deal it is then which gives Barton the chance of a bit of security. I really can’t blame him for that at all. Remember he was available on a free transfer and with no sign of a change in stance from Newcastle I can’t really fault him for looking after himself.

So thanks for everything Joey. I hope you continue the hard work and I hope you can stay on the rails. We’ll see you again soon enough as we’re down your neck of the woods in a few weeks time I can’t wait to here these tales that you were telling us about. Something about the truth? Let us know, just please don’t say that you were pushed out after making such a defiant stance about how a contract can be sat on and how you couldn’t be forced to go anywhere.

In terms of Newcastle, another player out and another day with nobody in. They’ll have to pull something out of the hat in terms of transfer activity although past experience tells me that it just won’t happen. Shame really as this summer could have been great and could have given us a platform to build on instead of having to rebuild an entirely new platform.

Will it work though?

  1. Its another sign of the apocalypse: Barton, Nolan, Enrique and Carroll gone… and now they’re shutting down the entire NYC subway system for the hurricane. Never seen that before.

  2. Big Dave, as it stands I would have to agree with you. We are promised new signings by the end of the window. If we get them in and they are decent then we will be alright. If the board repeat previous failings then I for one will be worried. It has been a good start to the season, but we do not look balanced yet and have a lot to prove in open play.

No judgements until the window slams shut.

  3. You might be Zoe. A few dozen years experience has taught me you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Our sow’s ear is the board, management and owner. This will all end in tears again. We might not get relegated but I don’t like the sound of 15th place which is where we may end up unless a miracle happens before the transfer deadline.

  4. at some point those players were going to leave weren’t they? we were going to have to replace barton and nolan if they had stayed on and retired. players come and go we weren’t going to be able to stop that.

let’s get behind the team HWTL

  5. it isn’t the transfer fees that are important it’s the salary. i bet barton was on about 50k a week so the idea of him needing the money is ridiculous.

i think it’s a terrible move for him going to QPR, the word journeyman springs to mind

newcastle well we need that left back and striker,

with the english ‘stars’ leaving so acrimoniously if I was pardew I’d be asking jonas and colo to recommend players to bring over

  6. Quite like this take on Joey et al from an apparent independent point of view.

Of course it shouldn’t try to excuse past misdemeanours but the sentiment is right in my opinion.

“thought Simpson had his best ever game for us”….. 😯 if that’s the case, then we’re fecked.

  10. As a professional athlete, you have 15 yrs toake as much money as possible for you and your family.

The Toon put him on the transfer list and a premiership club come in and offer him 4 yrs IRO £80k per week.

And you question his judgement to leave? 😕

Totally unnecessary criticism of him IMO .

  11. Troy same as Batty he stated that he would only go if a CL team came in for him otherwise he would see out his contract. I know the club tried to make it impossible for him. But if you give your word you should keep it.
Well I know I will always keep my word because it means something to me 😉

Batty I meant what was the rest of what he was saying 😆 😆

  12. @batty

He wasn’t lying at the time and really expected a top club to come in for him.

He’s probably realised the top clubs either don’t rate him or don’t trust him.

So he was left with a reality check. I stay at the Toon for another season, with Cabaye likely to be first choice and in a years time he’s 29 and will never be offered the contract he has been offered by QPR.

The Toon don’t want him and have expressed that by putting him on the list for free.
QPR come in and not only offer him a great contract, his last one in his career but also sold him the dream of leading the club and likely to be club captain.

It’s a no brainer for me and the bigger picture needs looking at.

  13. Troy he used twitter before I have asked him a number of questions as I know a lot of others have. But up to now he hasn’t responded except to mostly qpr fans wishing him well ❓
As I said I know he was forced out but he shouldn’t have give the fans his word

  14. Batty @ 98 thats why I cant understand the stick Saylor gets I can remember ones on here saying he was a greedy bastad with no loyalty except to himself, but he kept the head down and stuck with it until he got his contract, and some of the same people where saying that Nolan was the loyal one 😆 😆 😆 😆

  15. Zoe @73 your not the only one , not only do i not think we will struggle , i think we will improve on last seasons points and position .

      (Quote)

  16. Bobby/Troy, I agree 100% with you that Barton is fully within his rights as an athlete with a 15 year shelf life to make as much money as he can, and get the best deal for himself. But for me he can save the badge kissing “I love the Geordies, you’ll always be in my heart ” rubbish…

  17. Axel: I’ve always thought that finishing 12th allows a platform to build on etc because if we had say finished 9th we would have to try and improve a lot further on that

  18. That last line to me is pretty damning. Of course we have new performers but I like my heroes, I like to relate to the characters and to admire and respect them. I’d prefer not to have a completely new cast every frigging season just because we can cash in and smooth our margins.

  22. Bowburn: we do deserve more, just some things get in the way of the club like this saga etc I think fourfourtwo called us the ‘amy winehouse of football clubs’. If we didn’t have all these problems, then the club might not get as much attention as it does know

      (Quote)

  23. BBM you just beat me to it I was just about to sling that link up.
The least he can do is tell us on twitter what happened because if im not mistaken that was the point of the twitter.
He wanted to tell the fans what was going on.

  25. Oblong, Obertan started last game, so still leaves a choice to make

Tiote, Cabaye, Barton, Obertan, Ameobi, Gut

    Was front 6

  26. Zoe – I don’t know where you get your optimism from. Who are our blue chips? Colo, Taylor, Tiote, then what?
Geordie 2. You’ve spoken a lot of sense all night.
If we don’t get a quality (and I mean quality) striker who will paper over the massive cracks, we’re in for a long season of anxiety. There have been loads of different names strongly linked for left back recently, but only one name for striker, and I’ve never heard of him. I think we’ll end up with another Sibierski at the eleventh hour.
As for Ryan Taylor, he’s an even worse left back than Simpson is a right back and that’s saying something. He worries me like hell.

  27. Zoe – it’s true we’re in a shitty place right now and the worst of it is, is the divide between supporters. Only highlighted more than ever by Internet forums, which are both a blessing and a curse.

QPR sadly are making the right noises and speculating where possible. You sense that with Newcastle, the regime are happy to lower the expectations of both players and supporters. We shouldn’t let that happen without making a bit of a noise about it.

  28. I am still gutted that he is away but I can see good points, we wont be getting as much attention from the rags and the dirty tag, but more importantly maybe Vuckic will get more of a chance now, as I think he is tecnically a better player but I do think we will miss Joey heart and drive for the game

      (Quote)

  29. ZOE finishing 12 last season was more than most expected , and your right it gives us a good platform to build on and i think with the players we now have , we will play a more expansive game and we have players that can change the style of play during the match . Under Hughton it was plan A , use Carroll’s physical strength and Carroll scored or Nolan from Carrolls knockdowns . Plan B , panic and hope for the best . This squad imo has more skill and pace . Lets face it Cabaye is a more technically gifted player than Nolan or Barton and gets stuck in as well . Obertan is a proper winger with pace , Barton is a cm played out of position . The only thing missing is a pacey striker , but i still think we will get one in before the window shuts .

I accept Saylor was transfer listed.

I wasn’t aware of that, but for me Bartons circumstAnces are different .

    It’s his final contract.

I believe it makes a big difference.

I can’t recall any club offering Saylor a huge contract.

I will applaud Barton when he returns.
