Game on! Blackburn v Newcastle

Howay the lads!
Welcome one and all to the ‘Game on’ article which will take us through the Carling Cup match away at Blackburn Rovers this evening.

A place in the Quarter Finals awaits the winner of the tie this evening, and there will be a winner tonight as there are no replays and extra time and penalties will be used if needed.

Extra time is something that NUFC aren’t strangers to having scraped through the last two rounds thanks to the additional 30 minutes of playing time. First time out we just about scraped by Scunthorpe United thanks to a Sammy Ameobi special while in the last round it took a header from Fabricio Coloccini right at the end of extra time to give Newcastle the advantage in a seven goal thriller.

Tonight it’s Blackburn, who seem to have taken over our mantle as the comedy club of the Premier League. The fans are not happy with things at Ewood Park and are making their feelings known. They want Kean out and will remain vocal until it happens, which is why talk of a new contract for the pug-faced Scot made me chuckle.

In contrast Newcastle will be taking in the region of 4,000 fans to Ewood Park, which is staggering for a midweek cup game in fairness. They will occupy the Darwen End this evening and will be in fine voice as always. Hopefully we get a superb result to match their superb support!

For those who aren’t going I have to admit that trying to locate a video stream has proved fruitless thus far. You never know, one may turn up, but at the moment it looks as though we may have to make do with radio commentary only. As ever, if you find anything feel free to share the link.

That just about sums it up really. A place in Quarter Final of the Carling Cup? It would be nice wouldn’t it? Should we get through this evening the draw will be on Saturday at around midday.

  1. City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool all through to next round…Knowing our luck we probably would have been drawn against United away anyway. 😆

“The Kid, you’re pretty **** perceptive to work that out from radio commentary.”

Was just going to say that

  3. well the lads did well colo poor game by the sound of it giveing owr many fouls away, cannot fault effort like.

watch the gits get a home draw too 👿

  4. You don’t need to be perceptive when you have ears. He gave away two free kicks in dangerous areas and was lucky to get a foul when he messed up as the last man. They would have been clean through on goal. I love Colo, but he has been **** poor today.

  5. We may of lost but I love this team , to fight back like that was immense. Love it! Unlucky we didnt hold out but these things happen

  6. There was no way we were gna win the cup anyway so i would rather be out now than the semis!! lets concentrate on the league and see if we can finish in the top 8!!

  7. Colo gave away the two freekicks they scored from. He also got lucky when a foul was given against Blackburn after he fluffed it.

This was all said on the radio, so I don’t get how you guys haven’t picked up on this. Poor.

  8. Devo .. but they didnt let the unbeaten record go without a serious fight + i wud rather it happened in the carlito cup than owt else so .. mek sure we beat stoke and dreamboat is pure belta

  9. What about all the times that Collo was up fighting for an equaliser when other players would give up. Immense player IMO.

  10. It will be a serious dent in morale losing like that. There will be some gutted players needing a lift. Need to channel it into a backlash against Stoke.

Toughest test this season for me are Stoke.

  12. Anyway, I am far from heartbroken by this. Would have liked to have gone through, but our performance in 90mins was poor.

We did enough to come out of this and save face + another great goal from Cabaye. I wonder why our defending is always so poor in the cup? Maybe the Taylor + Colo partnership is key to our successes. God help us if one gets injured.

Livepool beat Stoke tonight do you think they will lose twice in a row at home? I think its going to be the hardest game of the season so far.

Zoe, that’s it. Truth be told I was never that arsed about tonight’s game. I’ve seen too many cup runs pissed on. Beardsley’s Boots said last night he didn’t think we were ready for a European place and would rather have a cup final. I’m exactly the opposite. I want to see us gradually climb the table until we’re capable of getting into Europe, only then will I feel confident of going all the way in cup competitions. For the time being, Premier League status is far more important to me.

I am not criticising Colo as a player, I know just how good he is. I am criticising his performance today. As an experienced player he shouldn’t have made the mistakes he did. He wasn’t great against Forest either and if I remember rightly, Perch was our best defender that day.

As I said, I think it may be down to Colo being used to playing with Taylor.

  18. So glad we went down fighting and didn’t roll over at 2-0. This lot could well be more up for it than ever at Stoke, HWTL!

So Coloccini had one poor game, maybe having Perch beside him and a dodgy toe threw him off, he is so consistently class for us, practically faultless, for me he is allowed one off night without being called pathetic! FFS

Night all, thanks for the commentary.

  19. The Kid, I reckon we missed Tiote more than owt else. He’s our lynchpin, and usually right in front of Colo.

  20. I am describing his PERFORMANCE as pathetic. There is nothing wrong with calling it how you see it. If I were to write off everything he had done up until this point and just call him a garbage player, then I could understand the points some are making. However, I am not. There is nothing wrong with criticising a player if he performs badly on the day. Jheeez! If anything, it just shows how high he has set the standard.

  21. Get in there toonsy lad! …..rock on the blog mate! …doing a stirling job sir….good night all velly late here ..COME ON TH TOOON …..CABAYE THE LADS!!!!

  22. The Kid I heard the commentaters blame Colo a few times,
and you could be right maybe him and Saylor know what eachother, but I find it funny that Colo can make mistakes but never gets hammered but if it was Saylor Stardy and co would be creaming themselfs ranting that they wanted his head on a plate.
But maybe it was all Taylors fault anyway because he broke his nose 😆 😆 well im sure Stardy will have someway of blaming him 😉

  23. we’ll be last on the highlights I’d imagine, they won’t have had time yet to edit it down to 40 seconds 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  24. Rodz

Maybe that is what it was. The freekicks Colo gave were in Tiote’s area(30 yards from goal etc) of the field to be fair….

      (Quote)

  25. right im off to watch the highlights. Concrats toonsy on the biggest thread yet im counting on Rodz to push it past 1000 with his late night antics 😀

  26. Dave, it’s all fucking Judas Carroll’s fault for just breaking Taylor’s jaw. If he brokk his fkn snout as well it would’ve healed back stronger and he probably wouldn’t be now be suffering.

Verdict: All our players need to do bare-knuckle fighting as part of the pre-season training routine.

  27. Big Dave

Agreed there. No player should be exempt of criticism. Especially not our captain.

Anyway, like I said, I am proud of our fightback(not performance) and it has saved us from a roasting in the papers tomorrow morning…We all know they are dying to sink their teeth into us.

Another goal for Cabaye and it sounded as though Guthrie played well.Debut for Santon too. Some good positives

      (Quote)

  28. Why was our defence ****? NO TIOTE

Taylor would be better than Perch for sure, but Tiote is simply a wrecking ball in defence.
