Game on! Norwich v Newcastle – Simpson and Perch start at the heart of defence

Magpies take on Canaries
Welcome one and all to our ‘Game on’ article which will take us through every twist and turn of the game this afternoon as the Magpies fly to Carrow Road to do battle with the Canaries.

Of course this will be a rather depleted Newcastle side that is tasked with facing the Premier League new boys of Norwich City. As Shamrock points out in his match preview, things are looking less that ideal when you consider our injury list.

However let’s not get too down about it. We can still get a result at Carrow Road although admittedly it would be easier with a fully fit squad to choose from. It’s not to be though and I guess we just have to make the best of what we’ve got and hope those that come into the fold can do the job for us.

As far as stats go you can peruse a wide range of them in the previously linked match preview, or you can have a look at more stats and fact aswell as some chalkboards and other fancy stuff here. I suggest you give both a look if you haven’t already done so as they both contain some really interesting thoughts and analysis of the game today.

If you’re looking for a link, the good news is that there are quite a few overseas TV stations broadcasting the match so the chances of picking up a decent one are fair to moderate. Of course you never quite know until the time and it makes it easier if we all pull together and share any decent links we come across on our cyber travels.

That just about wrap this up and it’s over to Carrow Road where Newcastle will be looking to bounce back from a run of three games without a win against a tricky customer in Paul Lambert’s Norwich City.

Howay the lads!

Norwich: Ruddy; Martin, Morison, Whitbread, Crofts, Holt (C), Surman, Hoolahan, Fox, Tierney, Naughton

Subs: Rudd, Johnson, Jackson, Pilkington, Bennett, Barnett, Wilbraham

Newcastle: Tim Krul; Ryan Taylor, Danny Simpson, James Perch, Davide Santon; Gabriel Obertan, Yohan Cabaye, Dan Gosling, Jonas Gutierrez (c); Demba Ba, Shola Ameobi

Subs: Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Alan Smith, Sammy Ameobi, Hatem Ben Arfa, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best

  1. You’ve gotta hand it to this team – they never know when they’re beaten.

If only we had someone of DJG’s vision in the managers seat – we’d be unstoppable! 😆

Your dodgy spelling took more effort to type than if you had just typed the proper words. Weird.

  3. that’s fucking terrible from Perch, we’ve conceded 3 from headers and what does he do, concedes a needless free kick just outside the area.
    Ridiculous

  4. @ Joe
Yes Shola is the only thing he has done today ok very poor to stay in the game to done one thing. And what happend to Shola in corner he has to take holt and Holt scored 2 goals so ty i will prefer shola out

  5. Even before this game, Norwich had scored more in the league than us–20 goals to our 19, so they’re no shrinking wall flowers. It’s been their defense which has let them down. Now the shoe’s on the etc. and so on.

  6. Cant blame Pardew, what else could he have done?

Hard game today, was always going to be. Hopefully colo might be fit for next week. Should win that one.

Chin up lads. Still doing much better this season than we should do.

  7. Demba ba has been excellent, not just two goals but he’s been everywhere, centre mid and centre defence without him this season we’d probably be bottom

  8. Come on Lads just keep giving it your all and don’t give up like some of the Fans.

DJG ?? when did you see Kadar you still havn’t answered the question 😕 as for not playing with a CB if we dont have any what are we to do ❓

  9. A wise manager would take off Ba now to avoid any further injuries in our squad. Knowing Pardew he would take him off after he is injured.

  10. Dont knock pardrew he has been fantastic for us.

  11. Funnily enough after these results the league table looks how it would if we have an excellent season.

Chin up lads and keep your expectations realistic. Surely no one actually believed we would get a Champions League spot?

  12. Big Dave I don’t understand the theory that just because I havn’t seen Kadar in the last 6 weeks and we have seen Santon for 20 minutes, then Kadar must all of a sudden be a **** player? I saw Kadar over 4-5 + games and Santon for 20 minutes.

      (Quote)

  13. DJG are you seriously trying to say that Pards would be stupid enough to not play Kadar if he thought he was up to it ??
Because I don’t think he is that fuking stupid but if thats what you think knock yersel out.

  14. plenty to do on the training field, still only a loss despite the scoreline. Still 7th and we play at home nest week. not all bad. Hopefully Kadar will get some practice in?

      (Quote)

  15. Well we’ve not given up. I’m glad the team can do that because if we relied on some fans we’d be ******.

Not the best but at the end of the day we have half a first team, people have been papping it about the lack of defence all week and it’s shown today.

What have we learned? We miss our defence.

  16. I agree Demba ba really excellend from the start of season. But in my opinion Shola and Sammy ameobi are not better than Ben arfa, so i cannot understand why Ben Arfa didn’t play today, maybe Pard will have a good explanation. There was a lot a space until the 65 minute and it was really a good game for him. Obertan is very inefficient when he arrives near the box

  17. I agree Northern Paul @ 335.

Make sense. We are still doing better than we should do by miles.

  18. Plus points, Cabaye has been good, Ba has been outstanding, Santon has looked steady away and looks like he’ll get better.

  19. Conceding 4 against Norwich is hard to swallow.

When we play better teams we are going to massively struggle to keep the scorelines down. Just lucky we didn’t play the likes of Man Utd with these defensive options too.

Ah well, was good whilst it lasted but 7th is the top spot we could hope to finish this season

  20. With the ball we looked ok…shame as I got used to winning again! Collo back for next game and lets start again. poor off set pieces today

Thanks for the links as always guys

  21. pardew has done a brilliant job for us but ive got to say his subs today didnt make sense!!! smudger and ferguson on after 85 mins?? when we are getting beat??? what about benny and best on after 60 mins?? bad decisions pardew 😐

Bring on next week. Today was always a hard game.

  23. Lots of evidence of bucketloads of team spirit today. Obviously the small squad has grown in to a big problem.

Norwich, like it or not, was not going to be easy, even before the injury crisis. They’re a good team. And their battering rams against our mix-n-match CBs seemed destined for misery.

      (Quote)

  24. We played mint except for Perch, I thought Simpson was the better of the two for the shorter man, and Gosling’s silly challenge except for that Demba Ba is unreal

  25. Nice to see people turning on others for expressing and opinion, very classy. And at what stage did anybody say Pardew out or turn on the players, I must have missed that bit. ❗

  26. 6pts minimum now in our next 2 games at home me thinks!!!! cheers obertan for today , shying out of tackles , not taking anyone on !!! poor player

  28. I was relieved the whistle is up quickly enough not to see shola getting send off. ❗

Reckless tackles from him even he is on yellow.phews.

How tall is simpson actually. And somehow perch lack the strengh and size of a CB,but has the required height.

  29. FSOTC @ 354 – Exactly. Was never going to be easy. Not keen on conceding 4 but I was half prepared for it.

  30. We’ve been fantastic all season and even today we’ve had our moments. We had a makeshift defence, down to 10 men and we still could hold our heads high- unlike past Newcastle teams at least they have team spirit and try their hardest.

    Ba is f**kin quality

      (Quote)

  31. Fair play Norwich, deserved result… was always going to be a tough one to get anything from… Santon, Ba and Cabaye the 3 best performers… Obertan was very poor, as was Taylor 1st half

      (Quote)

  32. God, there’s some people on here who’s comments about players are unacceptable. This was always going to be a tough game for us considering the injuries we had amassed last week. All of them tried hard and yes some players made mistakes but don’t slack them off FFS.

    ENCOURAGE not CRITICISE!

Yes its a bad result but we did our best, Pardew tried to combat this side and his plan didn’t work. All credit for trying to out fox the canaries. That’s the way things go these days, we created chances but couldn’t capitalise on them. I’m gutted like everyone else but we forget about it and move onto our next fixture, their are teams in worse positions than us at this current time. So let’s not forget that we are in a very very good position.

  33. not getting myself down after this game as we still are 7th in the league and we have 3 winnable games coming up!! swansea and west brom at home for me shud be 6pts!!!!

is benny injured anyone??? cant belieeeeeeeeeeeve him or best didnt come on 👿 👿 👿 👿 👿 👿

  34. Well when I first tuned in, I must have caught NUFC at their worst 5 minute period of the match. Gosling had a nightmare, but after that the little I saw went like this:

Ameobi did great dropping deep, chasing players and playing some nice passes.

Santon looked steady, quick and can read play.

Perch and Simmo out of their depth at centre back.

Obertan no end product. No point in having pace if you do nothing with the ball.

Getting frustrated by our wing play, want to see us whipping crosses in occasionally instead of insisting on cutting inside all the time.

Cabaye looked steady again. Mr Reliable.

Ba excellent, all over the place challenging and still looking hungry.

Raylor seemed pretty reliable too. Hats off to him.

Team performance not actually that bad, we need height at centre back quickly and went through periods of play where players were not making themselve available for the pass, but generally seemed to do quite well at putting the pressure on and getting forward – we just need a bit more creativity to unlock defences and need to get some decent crosses in. Cutting inside from the wing too often with nothing to show for it…

Howay the lads, hopefully we will have Colo back next week for some leadership at the back and we can get a result against Swansea. : 😉

      (Quote)

  35. Lets hope Colo and maybe williamson are back for next week at 3-2 i fancied us but naturally perch hadnt ****** up enough already so giving them the needless free kick finished the job off…

      (Quote)

  36. Please can we do a feel good article, I’m not looking forward to all the doom mongers and Pardew would be advisors over the next few days.

Still well on track tp get 30 points after 19 games, achieve that and we are unbelievably on course for 7th place.

Literally nothing Pards can do when you have your 3 first choice centre backs injured

      (Quote)

  37. Decent game actually, shame the difference was being unable to defend those set pieces. Thought we played decent apart from that.
People having a go at Pardew really need to have a word with themselves

      (Quote)

  38. big dave – where did i say pards was thick as **** or i wanted him out pal?? i said the subs didnt make sense

      (Quote)

  39. Zoe vicarage the forum is for discussion mate and if they want to critcise they can, get over it.

      (Quote)

  40. My only gripe with that game was James Perch. I never slag him off but FFS, don’t give away a foul like that when we’re chasing the game and have already conceded 3 goals from crosses outside the box. What happens in his head!?
