However, contrary to what some people seem to be saying, the goal yesterday was one for himself and not for us. I don’t mind that at all as it’s done us a favour, but the very notion that us qualifying for Europe was in the mind of the Liverpool number nine is, to be frank, utter pony.
Lest we not forget that team continuity and progression wasn’t exactly in the mind of Carroll back in January 2011 when he hopped on Mike Ashley’s chopper and turned up at Melwood grinning from ear to ear, so why would that suddenly change?
However it is ironic that the moment he walked out on us/left us/was pushed out (delete as appropriate, although I’ll never buy the pushed out theory) our fortunes improved as a football club. Suddenly we had a vast swathe of cash, and look what it has done for us.
At this moment in time it would appear that the decision to sell Andy Carroll or £35m has worked out a treat. It didn’t feel like it at the time as questions arose over Derek Llambias’ assertion that the money would be spent on the team, but just 13 months later the time for questioning is over and the results are in.
Right now we have a team with quality that I’ve not seen in a long time at St James’ Park. Yes there is still work to do and we can still improve, like any team, but to go from Championship to Europe in two seasons is pretty staggering by any stretch of the imagination.
So thank you Andy Carroll,not just for the goal yesterday that made us odds on favourites to play in Europe once more, but for also providing a legacy that has allowed our team to grow at a pace that has exasperated even the most positive NUFC fan.
P.S – If articles are a bit thin on the ground over the next day or so, it’s because I’m in hospital my wife as she gives birth to my child. If there is any news I’ll let you all know in due course.

@Richie, I’m the same, absolutely hate the judas b@stard but i know deep down i want him to do well, he’s a geordie after all, and on form he would be brilliant for England.
Think it’s important we qualified for Europe through league position as opposed to via the cups as it is more of an indication of the quality in your team. I’d like to think players look at league position when assessing transfers rather than finishing runners up in a cup which would mean just a one off season in europe.
Premier league is going to be bonkers the next few seasons, we already have 6 teams whose fans want 4th minimum, with us (slim chance) possibly in the hunt again next season competition is going to be even more intense.

Just one further observation about these new kit pictures that are doing the rounds. If you look at the home kit version that Hitman first put up: http://twitpic.com/98jr6v it isn’t just the Nike logo that’s wrong – the Virgin Money logo is wrong too, because somebody decided to change the colours to make it blend in better and make the shirt look ‘cool’. Virgin have paid NUFC a lot of money to have their distinctive red and white logo on the front of our shirts, and they’d be furious if our lads ran out onto the pitch wearing something like that. Clearly a fake.

The level of bitterness displayed by newcastle fans towards Carroll at this stage is beyond absurd. No allowence has been made for his age or the undeniable cyncism of Newcastle management, instead, its Carroll the judas blah blah. Uterly moronic. Does anybody seriously think that ashley and co wanted this kid to stay and forsake what they knew was a batty amount of cash? Newcastle fans now say he is utter s**t, a sentiment that has been echoed by a Newcastle director earlier this year when he also laughed off the abusrd amount of cash that Liverpool paid for him. So to sum up, he is supposedly rubbish and Nerwcastle got a stupid amount of money for this ‘donkey’. Yet the bitterness directed at him is off the chart and it tells a different story. At any other club people might morn a player they rated, or the value of the return but in his case is seems the fans are happy on both counts as they dont rate him and at the same time, acknowledge that they got a fortune for him. You have also got to see him humiliated and dejected for most of the season, so whats left? This season has changed my view of Newcastle fans forever. A small bit of sucess and it has totally gone to your heads – like Leeds under O’Leary’s managemnt giving it large to everyone and conducting themselves with ugliness and total lack of class. When the s**t hit the fan for Leeds there was zero sympathy coming from any quarter and thats a loney place to be. Newcastle fans need to get some perspective on things. You have a ruthless muppet running your club who cares zip about your heritage. You really think this guy is going to invest the kind of money required to take the club forward, dream on. There will come a day when things arent going quite so well, when you might need a more mature Andy Carroll to return and be a big player for you, a day when he might well be the devestating player that some of the best managers in the business think he is capable of being. You might then regreat giving the kid such an unecessary savaging.
