Out with a whimper! Everton 3-1 Newcastle

Pienaar strikes first
Newcastle played Everton this afternoon knowing that they needed to win to stand any chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Well now I actually wonder if they did know? You see the performance today was weak to say the least, which was unexpected when you consider what could have been on offer.

As it stands a win for us wouldn’t have mattered anyway, and fifth is still a mighty fine effort from the lads after 38 games, but to give such a disappointing performance in the first half is difficult to take. Everton shouldn’t have anything taken away from them as they were excellent in that first period and gave us no room to do anything in.

Goals from Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic were enough to give Everton a deserved 2-0 lead at half-time although I still maintain we made it easy for Everton to press the game by failing to play our own.

The second half arrived and Newcastle were much improved. Sylvain Marveaux and Ryan Taylor replaced Davide Santon and James Perch and almost immediately you could see that the changes worked in our favour, although in fairness it wasn’t hard to improve from what was a dire first half performance.

Papiss Cisse missed pretty much an open goal, Hatem Ben Arfa scuffed a shot wide and Demba Ba shot straight at Tim Howard as the visitors pressed and probed for a way back into the game.

However it was Everton who scored the next, and decisive, goal when John Heitinga made the most of a static Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini and easily headed home from six yards out.

Brief hope was restored shortly after as the visitors pulled one back courtesy of a Tony Hibbert own goal, but no comeback was on the cards this time and the game petered out.

Everton were impressive today and the result made it nine games without defeat for David Moyes’ side. They were confident and that showed, and in truth there was only going to be one winner in this contest.

Which makes you wonder why Tim Cahill had to act like a knob right at the end and earn himself a red card AFTER the final whistle. He lost his head but then the same must be said for Yohan Cabaye who was on the egde of losing it all game and actually did when a ballboy failed to do his job properly and give Cabaye the ball back.

A fine season has ended on a sour note for us, but we’ll be back, especially if players like Sylvain Marveaux can stay fit. Considering today was his first appearance in six months he done rather well and showed some great skill and vision. Unfortunately it came to nothing in the end but it was promising all the same.

In summary, what a season!

Everton: Tim Howard, Tony Hibbert, John Heitinga, Phila Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Darron Gibson, Phil Neville, Leon Osman, Steven Pienaar, Maraouane Fellaini, Nikica Jelavic

Subs: Jan Mucha, Denis Stracqualursi, Tim Cahill, Magaye Gueye, Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley, Sylvain Distin

Newcastle: Tim Krul; James Perch, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon, Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye, Cheik Tiote, Jonas Gutierrez, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse

Subs: Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Shola Ameobi

P.S – Troy Stavers, you are now banned from attending away games!

  1. Bottom line, we were ****, now lets wait three and a half months for the new season yay 😛 😥 😥

  3. Let’s hope our play off opponent isn’t a strong club. ❗ ❗

    Anyway,what a conclusion to 20yrs of EPL. 😯

  4. Gary Hooper helped himself to five goals as he and Scottish Premier League champions Celtic ended their season in style with a 5-0 thrashing of Hearts at Parkhead.

    😯 😯

    Congrats to Fraser Forster.

  5. It’s all in the plan folks. After the last two defeats everyone will write us off again for next season and we can fly in under the radar and have the league sewn up by Christmas. 😆

  6. Poor last game, looked better 2nd half but ultimately made no difference anyway with **** and Spuds winning

Just watched the Barton sending off, that bloke is an idiot and totally lost it

  7. Barton just saved his **** there with QPR still staying, but surely a huge fine and legthy match ban ahead for him. 😐

  8. Marveaux looked tidy on the ball though didn’t he considering he had been out for such a long time, fancy him to get quite a bit of pitch time next season, be like a new singing. I’m afraid that chance Jonas had in the first half summed him up for me, did all the hard work but at the end of the day, pump. Just can’t get away with him.

  9. Everton always finish the season well, but we didn’t perform well today. It’s something that pardew needs to work on. We’re still a little too but too much like jekyll and hyde. Some games we’re unplayable, other games we just aren’t at it. Granted there was a hint of fortune about Everton’s first two goals (Big deflection on the first and the ball rebounding straight to jelavic for the second) but it’s games like this which will define our season if we kick on next year. It’s all well and good writing off the games against top 6/7 sides when your only aiming for top 10, as those results won’t impact where you finish as long as you beat the sides below you. If we want to improve next year Everton are the kind of side we should be taking at least 4 points off. No disrespect to them but with one or two exceptions (such as pienaar) there’s no players in their starting XI that i would want in ours.

  10. I always feel Marveaux is another potential star player for us,well for next season then. 😉

  11. if the F.A. have any balls, Barton should be out of football for a long time.
i was one of the few, who kept wanting to give him “another chance”, but now, i couldnt give a **** , what happens with him!! 🙁 🙁
today’s first half was as bad as it has been all season, improved in the second, but these players need to relise, the league didn’t finish once 5th was secured, it finished at the final whistle today!!
am not having a go at them, i cant, not after the season we’ve just had, but if we were in man city’s shoe’s, a preformance like today, would of been suicidal 🙁 🙁
just need Munich to win the CL, and i’ll be well happy 😀 😀

  12. The lads never got off the bus till half time as usual. Gog help em if we ever start a game from the off. Having said that, their first was down to Williamson turning his back on the shot, as usual, a cardinal sin, and the second should have been a hand ball and a free kick to us.
However, we were not up for it till we got a bollocking from the gaffer at half time, but all to no avail.
Ba looked like he was playing somewhere else and Chiek just didnt look interested. Cabaye kind of slept through the first period and actually drove me towards watching Shittieh concede to QPR, but then Joey did a Joey and handed the title to the Moss-side Mob. A strange afternoon. Really looking forward to next season and the promise it brings. Have we heard that somewhere B4. ?????? HWTL.

  13. To avoid a massive disappointment, I would not allow myself a scintilla of hope. Knowing that NUFC always let you down, I decided to watch other clubs’ enduring an afternoon of torture instead. What an enjoyable afternoon I had. Mancini was cracking up. Phil Jones’ face was a picture.

  15. Toonsoldier9 – I agree a bout Barton – kicking Aguero after he’d already been sent off was ridiculous. Although I didn’t know punching Tevez was an offence – I thought it was what anyone should be doing!

  16. Joey Barton have to be Protected! Tevez Hit Him First and he didn’t have anything!

  17. Not convinced we can keep both Ba and Cisse. They just dont work together imo. Not only for us but also for Senegal.
If DB goes to PSG, I wont cry. I think he is replaceable.
In saying that, we seem to play much better in a 4-3-3 formation, which atleast allows our forwards to attack more.
AP had players in all kinds of wrong positions today. I like him, but he sometimes confuses the **** out of me with his line-ups.
Ha Ha but what do I know 😕
Still 5th is proppa beltas like. 😛 😛

  18. Toonsy agree with preety much everything except “Yohan Cabaye who was on the egde of losing it all game and actually did when a ballboy failed to do his job properly and give Cabaye the ball back.”
It sounds as if your making an excuse for Cabaye ? I have seen ballboys muck about before but I have never seen or heard off a grown man pushing a kid because he wasn’t quick enough to give him the ball.
I just hope Cabaye is really proud of himself because he was a total fuking muppet for that and should hang his head in shame ..
I noticed he wasn’t to quick to get back in to Cahill, Cabaye has went down in my eyes after today.
IMO the whole team put in another **** performance today where it just looked like they couldn’t be bothered, we need to have Saylor back for next year because he is the only player we have that has the balls to shout and rally the troops when you need a bit of a never say die gung ho attitude.

      (Quote)

  19. BB yeah mate 5th is a well deserved reward and a taste of what could be to come, As for the formations etc yeah they do look a bit strange at times but surely the players practise things in training and tbh I don’t think the tactics are to blame for some of the games like today when multi millionaire players can’t even get the basics right.

      (Quote)

  20. If we played all season like we played today we would of been fighting relegation for sure. I hope they realise how poor they were because any more of that next season too many times and we will be in big trouble.

Today i’m happy as we are back in Europe and deserve it on balance of play but i know I will still be nervous next season untill we reach the 38/40 point mark such is our unpredictability . 😉

  21. Spurs ‘stars’ will not stay if they don’t get CL football, not a chance, bale will leave, modric will leave, aswell as VDV sandro will leave and possibly parker. Just a shame Arsenal couldn’t miss out on it as there’d be no way that Van Persie would stay with them, then we’d see next season how well they’ll cope without him 😈 😆

      (Quote)

  22. Swap Sandro with Walker on my list, Sandro isn’t even a ‘star’ at spurs, hes ****.

  23. We cant handle strong, powerful teams with fight in them. Too many players went missing today, however, a great season and thanks to all involved. Look forward to June when hopefully good class players will come in and strengthen the squad.

Think he might ‘hang fire’ on extending his contract leaving Arsenal with the dilemma of selling him now or risk losing him for nothing next year.

    -Walker—-Gallas—–King(if injured Kaboul)—-***-kot-
    ——————————Parker———————————–
    ——————-Modric———–Van Der Vaart—————
    —Lennon—————Adebeyor———————–Bale—
If they can retain their players( 🙄 ) then they should sell Lennon, Asseo Ekotto and Defoe which will make them 25-30m richer and then buy Baines(8m tops), Hoilett(3m compensation), Luuk De Jong(10-12m) and Vertonghen(7-10m). They’d then have a team capable of top 3 fighting it out with city and united.

  33. we have to remember that this is the first season that the majority of the Lads have been together. It can take a couple of seasons to fully get an understanding of each others strengths and weaknesses.
Hopefully if we can keep the nucleus of the team together, we can improve from where we have come to this season.
Our target for next season has got to be top 6. And we need to see more effort and commitment from more of the players.

      (Quote)

  34. Chris – you wouldn;t have Jelavic? Jagielka? Heitinga? you must be insane. You lot have done well this year and deserve your fifth place finish. But to suggest Everton were lucky today is just stupid. You were out fought and out classed for long periods of a game you had no desire to win(despite having more at stake). Seriously, try watching the game next time.

      (Quote)

  35. Now, now, play nicely gentleman.

Cabaye was out of order but these Galic types have it in them.

As for the game, we just didn’t turn up but that’s life, Everton are a good side.

Although finishing fifth is great lets not let that blind us to the fact that we had probably the best chance of getting in the top four than any time recently and next year will be harder. Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool will improve their squads and we need to push on and do the same. We’ll also have the extra games which may be a hindrance.

  36. I gotta feelin some of our frenchy’s had not getting injured on their minds today aswell, what with the euro’s up and coming.
I hope they have the same attitude to not getting injured when they are playing for their country too.

  37. As for Cabaye – next time he wants to act the ***** I hope someone knocks him out!! So you call Cahill names but then don’t criticise Cabaye for picking on a ball boy. Maybe that’s all part of being a ‘Geordie hard man’ is it? Picking on ball boys? I hope th eFA throw th ebook at the c*nt. Next time he can try picking on any of the grown men in the stands – I’ll bet he doesn’t.

That was part of my thinking aswell, if he leaves though aswell as ledley king, bassong, saha and gallas(think hes out of contract aswell) then that’s 250k/pw of the salary, thats £13m pounds a year, wityh youngsters coming through for them, they’d just need to buy another striker(aswell as De Jong) and possibly another CB and I reckon they could do it

Try “I hope the FA/Everton ban that ball boy”, he was interfering with the game. And out of the players you mentioned I’d only have Jelavic and he’d be back-up to Cisse and Ba.

  41. Mersey Blue – we had our chances today, just didn’t take them.

  43. I think you’ll find in our ‘game on thread’ that Cabaye was well criticised.
Nay excuse for what he did, quite pathetic.
Much like Cahill needlessly losing his head and getting a straight red.
    What a *****. 2 match ban to start the season. 😳 😳

      (Quote)

  44. BB
Was thinking that myself, the majority of our 1st team hadn’t played a full-PL season prior to this season. Krul came in as back-up towards the end of last season, Santon hadn’t played in the PL before and only played a few for Inter, Cabaye had only played french footbal at one club and so was getting used to a big new club in a much tougher league, Ben Arfa was largely injured last season and still has only played a fraction of our games this season, Ba played at West Ham but only for 4months and Cisse’s had 14 games in a new league not knowing the language and has still managed 13 goals(only a couple of them were tap-ins aswell  ). So thats 6 of our 11 1st teamers that haven’t played a whole PL season prior to this one(with a couple not even a whole season this season with injuries and ACON).

      (Quote)

  45. Andymag – ban the ball boy for what? I was sitting right where it happened. He did nothing wrong, didn’t delay the game. Your guy is a ***** but hey if you want to condone such behaviour I hope you don’t have kids. I like the Toon, and the fans are always a good craic, but you seriously need to watch that incident again. He’s bang out of order and he should have been dealt with. Sitting by several Newcastle fans today who all said he was out of order. Also did you not notice your captain make him go over at half-time to the ball boy to apologise? Why would he do that if your player wasn’t in the wrong? Like I said to Chris earlier – try watching the game next time. It helps when forming opinion if you watch the game rather than just reply. Good luck in the Europa League next season, hope you guy sget further than the Redshite.

  48. @ Big Dave 20,
    Spot on regarding both topics.
TC, who gives a fck what Dave thought about Barton, has nothing to do with his opinions on Cabaye, which are correct, it was bang out of order and he should make a public apology immediately.

Dave, fully agree on Saylor as well, without him we don’t appear to have that determined drive and crumble way to easily. Our defence has one of the best clean sheet records yet our goals conceded record is decidedly average. We need driven leader on the pitch, maybe the longer he is at the club the more Tiote will grow into the role, but atm we have noone except Saylor that is a vocal and determined enough.

      (Quote)

  49. 😆 just watching all the city fans that left early trying to climb back in when they realised the game wasn’t over 😆 😆

You wouldn’t have Baines? Fellaini? Pienaar? Rodwell?
Ban the ball boy? You’re making a mug of yourself and you should stop talking now, digging yourself a hole mate.

      (Quote)

  51. MB – To be fair most people over the past couple of threads have said Everton are strong finishers and outplayed us today., just like most said Cabaye is a **** for picking on a kid. Don’t get so defensive mate – it has been a pretty good season for both our clubs, however only 1 of them is in Europe next term! 😉

      (Quote)

  52. MB
Of course Cabaye was in the wrong and should have dealt with the incident better, I just felt that saying the FA should take action against him was harsh, I myself haven’t yet seen the incident but from match reports that I’ve seen they say that he was preventing the game from quickly restarting and being very biased, he may just be young but he should know better than to disrupt it in that manner. I will watch the incident to confirm what I’ve read, if you are correct and he wasn’t disrupting the flow of the game then I apologise. Btw I don’t have kids(still one myself kind of) but do not suggest that I weould ever condone assault to my children.

  54. I’m sorry but Tiote is a liabilty, not a leader.
He is constantly picking up early yellows, and could quite easily have picked up a 2nd once again today.
Its nay use to the team, when he is getting booked so early in the 1st half and having to take it easy for the remainder of the match.
Get him sorted Pardew or get rid.

  55. ST
Not for the 1st team no I wouldn’t have them. And I don’t believe that I was ‘digging myself a hole’ if the boy was in the wrong, granted ‘banning him’ was to harsh but I felt that suggesting that Cabaye should have action taken against him was ridiculous. Colocinni and Pardew should talk to him about it and maybe he should send a personal apology to the boy, thats my view any way.

      (Quote)

  56. ST @55 you know what TC is like just trying to score a cheap shot even when he is wrong, I just know if that was my wee Lad I would have risked a lifetime ban to pay the dirt bag back, I just can’t understand how anyone can excuse that to me hitting kids is the same as hitting women, its normally done by guys that don’t have the balls to stand up to another man, as I said he wasn’t to quick at pushing Cahill.

      (Quote)

  57. Andymag – Cahill deserved his red. Game over and Cabaye says something which Cahill took exception to. No excuses, he should not react. All he had to do was point to the scoreboard. Ref had no choice but to send him off.
If you can keep that squad together you have the makings of a good side. Collocini, Ba, Cisse, Tiote and even Cabaye (who despite his behaviour was class when he got on with his game) point to a great future. Solid goalkeeper as well and a decent manager.
We are doomed to remain where we are as long as we have no money at all.

      (Quote)

  58. BB
Bloody hell thats a bit strong, yes that can be an issue with him but he’s vastly improved this season with his tackles, and we need a srong figure like him in the middle of the park, he has broken down countless attacks this season preventing us from conceding, so if he picks up bookings as a result for a couple of mistimed tackles (has been unfairly booked on many occasions) then so be it.

      (Quote)

  59. oh and another thng. That was Alan Pardews first full season as our manager. How many yrs has Moyes had at Everton.

Apreciate that, I like everton and do hope they progress over time, Moyes has done a brilliant job with what he’s got, sell one of your players for a top price and I think you’ll be challenging up at the top-end(4-6) with us

  62. Cabaye was out of order pushing the lad ,and he must of felt sick when he got pushed like. I never like to see stuff like that its to Colos credit he made Cabs go over and apologise to the lad . We bottled it again today ,simple as, but there have been some amazing games played by the lads to soften the blow. 😀

      (Quote)

  63. Nah I’m sick of the excuses being made for him. I agree he has improved from last season, slightly, but he now has a rep as dirty tackler and the refs are looking for any excuse to book him. He needs to get smarter too.

      (Quote)

  64. Andy, so Baines over Simpson?
Fellaini/Rodwell over Jonas in the midfield 3?

Cabaye pushed a little kid in the boards. If only the boy was more like poncy footballers in the premier league and had rolled around clutching his face.
In my mind Cabaye should get a ban or fine, no excuses, not condoning what the boy supposedly did but the Cabaye’s reaction was disgusting.
Dave I can’t believe anyone thinks otherwise!

      (Quote)

  65. Lads IMO we really only need strenghtening at the back whic isn’t a bad thing as we can spend more of our time trying to get it sorted, providing we hold on to our best players.
Has it started sinking in to anybody else that we have to do without Footie now for yonks with the added pleasure of all the transfer **** that wer’re going to hear 👿

      (Quote)

  66. Fortunately Cabaye was dealt with by the ref at the time of the incident. (he got off lightly like ❗ ) so no further action can be taken by the FA.
But the club should fine him the maximum allowable imo.
It really is totally unacceptable behaviour from a player who is also a father.
How would he like it if it was his kid on the receiving end? Idiot.
