Does Alan Pardew deserve a pay rise?

Deserving of a new deal?
So it seems that Alan Pardew is fancying his chances of sticking around at Newcastle after a cracking season last season and is said to be looking to renegotiating his contract with the club.

And why not? After picking up two Manager of the Season awards it could be argued that his stock has never been higher, so doesn’t it make sense to try and renegotiate whilst in a relative position of strength? Isn’t that what you would do?

Pardew is not on great money if reports are to be believed. Details are sketchy on such things, rightly so, but going by recent history of managerial contracts I think it would be safe to assume that his basic wage isn’t that great compared to other Premier League managers, and that his contract will be heavily performance based. If you want money from this regime then you must earn it!

It was well publicised at the time that Pardew was awarded with a five-year deal. It was almost unheard of for a new manager to get such a long deal but, for the moment anyway, it looks to be something that has worked out for Ashley and Co.

However football management is a fickle occupation and whilst Pardew is getting the backing of the majority for now, there is always the chance that a run of poor results or a season where expectations aren’t exceeded/fulfilled will see that popularity start to disappear.

In short I do think he deserves a pay rise although it is hard to work out what level of pay he should be getting without knowing what he is on currently. The problem with a pay rise though is that it makes getting rid a of a manager that bit more expensive, and I’m sure it’s something Mike Ashley will want to avoid again after the whole Sam Allardyce affair.

At the end of the day I do think he deserves a new deal, but I’m also wary if he was to be offered one. Personally I think a little bit of insecurity can be a good thing and can stop people becoming complacent within their role, and with a contract based on incentives, like most of ours are, I think it is generally enough to keep anyone on their toes and keep them working towards making us better.

Would you offer Pards a new deal?

  1. I hope argues his case better than Danny Simpson 🙂

Yes for me and he will get one.. as much as you can fault Ashley, he rewards good performers so it makes sense that Pards will benefit. How much… well I can’t say I am privy to what pl managers are on so.. **** knows 🙂 🙂

  2. No, I wouldnt offer him a new deal. He has signed a 5 year contract which he was incredibly fortunate to be offered in the circumstances ie. no one expected Hughton to be fired, and Pardew had no reason to think he would ever be in line for a top job having last been sacked by Southampton in the (then) 1st Division, and no one else beating a path to his door.

He’s done brilliantly but that is not the point. A contract is a contract. And he would be far better concentrating on proving last season was not just a fluke. Or would he accepty a pay cut if the team fail to improve next season? He is 18 months into a 5 year contract – come back in another 18 months with a trophy or a top 4 finish, and maybe he will deserve a decent rise.

As it is, I doubt he is having to apply for tax credits or housing benefit to top up his meagre income.

  3. I don’t know because I don’t know how much he’s on , but if you go by some reports he wasn’t getting paid owt as he was just clearing his gambling debts. 😀
I just know that he is worth holding on to.

  4. I see that dirty scouse **** Carra managed to take his heed oot the bin long enough on ITV last night to proclaim that Jelavic is just as good if not better than Cisse!!! 🙄

Aye right, and King ******* Kenny should have got manager of the season!! 😆

  6. Pardiola is supposed to be paid a retainer and a percentage of profit generated by achievement which leads to taking home huge money.

Renegotiating early is not likely to be appreciated because he sets the tone however if Ashley decides to extend the term I would be chuffed

  7. I’m amazed at how difficult I am finding it to answer this question. It’s dead right that he has done a fantastic job last season and the sentimental side of me says absolutely he should, but it’s a business at the end of the day and really he’s earned his money.
I had my annual review where I work in April and I’m not blowing my own trumpet but it was excellent, but were now into June and they still haven’t mentioned a pay rise yet?! 🙄 👿
I know the football world is different and you could argue that if Pardew done **** he’d have been sacked so having done well he should be reward.
Personally I’m a fan of the incentive based salary. Set a salary that would remain consistent and then build bonuses on top, ie win the league you get X mill bonus, top 4 finish and that’s X about of bonus, so on, and almost bespoke a managers or players salary each season. I know it would be very difficult to set up and perhaps maintain, and would need the whole league to sign up to it. But I think that would be a way for clubs to survive, because for many, wage bills are a huge problem.

  8. I think that his incentive base contract is one to keep. Maybe do well for us again next season and he would deserve a bump in his base salary

  9. No way.
The manager should be under the same restraints as the players, a hell of a lot of our players performed above expectations last season, we can’t give everyone a bumper rise, he has too long left currently imo.
Simmo is just as deserving of a pay rise i think as he signed in the champ.

  10. Seems like Newcastle are definately coming to South Africa for their preseason. Along with Man United.

Newcastle will be playing Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, two huge clubs and maybe Mamelodi Sundowns in the Vodacom Cup.

Most of the key players will probably be in Europe but still it’ll be the first time In get to watch them live. 😆 😆

  11. ST – that’s sort of what I mean about you can’t give everyone a new contract just coz we have a good season, but with the bonus scheme you could reward the players that made it such a good season. I know there is one in place now to a degree but if all players were on say £20k then bonuses for appearances and performance, it would make things far more sustainable for clubs. I know that’s never going to happen but it would get rid of greedy agents and clubs huge debt.

JJ – I’m really pleased to see Newcastle playing in these pre season cups and tournaments. I think it’s a much better way of raising our profile and increase support worldwide than having a one off friendly game that only the supporters of the 2 teams involved are interested.

  13. Totally agree with RotherValleyMag@2……….”proving last season was not just a fluke. Or would he accept a pay cut if the team fail to improve next season? He is 18 months into a 5 year contract – come back in another 18 months with a trophy or a top 4 finish, and maybe he will deserve a decent rise.”

…you could argue that his ‘workload’ has been increased this season through Europa League football, but I’m sure a healthy bonus would’ve taken care of that. If we qualify for Europe again next year, fair enough, but for me now is too soon to up his wages, unless of course he’s prepared to have them cut back down again if we fail to get into Europe next season and have a stinker. He needs to prove consistency to me, and that means more than one year. We have bigger fish to fry at the moment anyway, he might have a different squad of players to work with come August.

Forget Pardews pay rise, whoever put that together deserves a big bloody cheque

  15. Why sign Tiote on a longer deal for more money after 1 year… everyone seemed happy with that.. why sign Carr for a longer deal..
Ashley is a clever business man who knows how to protect an asset.. so why would it be any different with Pardew

  17. Aussie – perfectly valid point, plus Pardew is one of the lowest paid managers in the league and it would be another step to showing everything is settled at the club and the direction we want to go

  18. Ice 🙂 don’t go out looking like Richie mate.. you get arrested on the spot and you don’t want to be in jail in a flashy white mac 🙂

  19. Aussie, Carr was a no-brainer – he makes Ashley money buy doing exactly what Ashley knows, buy cheap with large sell-on value and huge profit potential. Tiote’s improved contract also means one thing only to me, more expensive to buy from us = more money for NUFC. So they both make financial sense to Fatty. Barcelona ain’t gona come in trying to take Pardew off us. I think if he takes us through a successful European campaign AND qualifies again, then a pay rise is justifiable as he’s doing more work and bringing more cash to the club. Just my thoughts on the article anyway.

  21. Rodz, if Pardz performs he will make Ashley money.. just by finishing top 5 he had made extra millions fo the big man.. Europe = $$ as you said… and who knows Liverpool could be in for him after next season 🙂

Yeah, regarding Pardew, he will have helped make more money for the club by finishing 5th, fair enough, but at the end of the day I know ****** all about the wage structure at NUFC. I’d imagine he got a big bonus to handle that but I know as much as the next man. For me, I just think he needs to do it again to prove his worth. Maybe I’m just a tight b@stad 😕

  25. Pardz could also be courted by the fa for the england job after they bow out of the euro’s after the group stages .. so if he was on solid coin here, he may not jump ship so readily..

  26. …you been watching much of the Euros Aussie? I know it’s daft o’ clock for you over there in upside down land. I might stick some money on England tonight. We’re big underdogs. The pressure’s on France I reckon.

  32. I say put his name on the bloody stadium. Pardew Park. Just rolls off the tonge 💡 😆

Yes he needs a pay rise because

    1- he deserves it
2- it brings stability to the club which helps things tick along
3- it protects NUFC from losing him for peanuts if a bigger job is offered him.
4- it reinforces his power within the club that will keep players in line in respecting his decisions
    5- he fcking deserves it.
If you did for your company what pardew did for this club and didn’t get a pay rise you’d burn the building down. I know I would 😈
If we were talking about one of the star players everyone would be screaming for Ashley to open up his wallet. Pardew is as important if not more important than any of our star players…
    IMO

  35. Black Bartoon – Do you really believe that?

Jelavic did brilliant at Everton last season but Cisse was emmense for us like and had alot more adapting to do.

So what order would you put Ba, Cisse and the lad N’Doye who we have been linked with as well?

Danish – I think if we loose Ba I would sooner replace him with a player who wouldn’t be away at all!
Maybe someone like Luuk De Jong, Das Boot or Afallay … or we could buy them all and not give Pardew a new contract!!! 💡 😛

  36. Afternoon all . Re Pards ,maybe he just needs a few more bonus incentives added on, as now we are in Europe there’s the extra work involved for preparing for those games .We have to remember we wern’t anywhere near europe when he signed, It may even be that his contract included a pay review should we make Europe.

Toon chicken @4 & CC@5 -Carra is a Everton fan so he’s always gonna big up the jelly man. 😉

Hopeing England put in a performance today ,Will be glad to see the game through to be honest as the lads been fitting lots today 🙁 Been to g.p and had him looked at ,seems brighter now. Every time England are in a big tournament he gets ill ,it’s weird . 😯
