Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham – Match highlights

Match highlights of our opening day win over Tottenham for you all to enjoy now, including a rather cheeky back pass from Steven Taylor to Tim Krul!

As I’m sure you’ll have read and indeed seen, it was hardly a vintage match from our perspective but we have three points to show for it which is the aim of the game I suppose. We scored more goals than they did. Canny difficult this football lark isn’t it?

Joking aside, the win reminded of how we started off last season in truth. Solid yet not spectacular but we still managed to grind out results. To do that with a bunch of players who have hardly played in pre-season isn’t bad at all in my mind and means that it can only get better once they all get up to speed.

Howay the lads!

How can some of you say Barfa’s creativity has been missed? He’s done nowt since his injury and was never involved in the great run we had at the start of the season. He looked terrible in his last game.

What I do know is that Barfa may be an outstanding player but since his injury he’s been 3 yds off the pace.

That is fully understandable and he needs 6 months injury free to show his full potential again.

I’m not surprised a bit he’s been dropped because Best and Ba link up far better and are both fit.

Barfa needs a few reserve games before he is even considered for the first team again.”

    @B’Toon

You ask how I think he Barfa performed in the City and United games.

At United he did a couple of decent balls and a run throughout the whole game, otherthan that, quiet for large parts of the game.

At City, quiet for large parts of the game. Trying to do too much instead of releasing the ball.

That’s from memory of watching it live.”

    Shall we debate it?

      (Quote)

  17. @JJ

I see you replied as I was posting.

    Let’s pursue it then.

Barfa was criticised by most when he came back from serious injury. I have never denied criticising him.

I always maintained it was like playing with 10 men at times. What you are failing to do is put in my other posts surrounding those comments stating he can’t be judged fully until this season now.

There is a huge difference from what you said.

I have never suggested selling him. You did.

On the contrary, I have always maintained he is super talented and as time progressed, particularly at the time when you were on about selling him, I was professing we should build the team around him.

    Over to you JJ. 😉

      (Quote)

  18. Troy,

I don’t see how we can debate it when it is clear our opinions about Ben Arfa have been very similar to each other.

We both felt he was being too selfish and needed to adapt his game to be worth a starting position.

The only difference being that I said I think if he didn’t come right by the end of the season we should sell him. And you said we should him him a spell in the reserves.

However, if he didn’t come right and continued to play as he was until the end of the season, would you not have sold him too?

Just find it odd how we had such similar sentiments yet you have continuously brought up my comments at the time to assist your debates?

Perhaps it was only because until this morning you never understood me sentiments and opinions correctly. In which case… we have no debate.

Quite simply, I agreed with you at the time. And you agreed with me…

      (Quote)

  19. @Troy
You stated that at that moment in time he was worse than Best and Obertan.
JJ said that if he didn’t improve he would selling him.
I don’t agree with him but his opinion was understandable.

You are clinging on to the selling as if JJ continually brought it up and was adamant we should. It was a couple of off the cuff comments. Certainly not over-drawn as your Cabaye is overrated rubbish, when even when played defensively he was top notch (maybe not as good as attacking but most tackles in the league speaks for itself)

      (Quote)

  20. @JJ

I’m not arguing for arguing sake. My point though is entirely different. I could see his potential. I never forsaw us selling him.

Im a huge advocate of skilful exciting footballers.

I knew he had pedigree once he came here and I researched him.

I’m sure you can see the difference.

  23. The point of all this Trumpet tho if you had followed this mornings debate and Aussies hissy fit which was bigger than your monumental one last week, was I was trying to balance the debate between JJ and Stardust.

Stardust was suggesting JJ could not identify a quality player. I was pointing out that JJ had suggested selling Barfa in the summer which assisted Stardusts theory.

Personally, I don’t believe either can spit a good player. 😉

  24. JJ& Troy , I think many of us questioned Benny’s play back then ,I know I did.Quite simply he wasn’t a team player a lot of the time ,he was trying too hard to justify his adolation from a section of fans. Under Pards guidance he has improved dramaticly being a team player and mucurial talent in equal measure. He gives the team something others don’t ,the ability to change the game in an instant but we now have the extra dimension that he isn’t quite so selfish anymore which is reaping dividends. There isn’t the division on his abilty between fans as much as previously and that has arisen with the benefit of time and guidance from the coaching setup. The same could be said of Perch and Santon both of whom are getting better all the time . I would like to see Simmo given the same time to improve on his game as I don’t like to see players written off too soon .We forget how bad Colo was when he first arrived but look at him now.

However I am really hoping that pards spends a bit of money as we have spent next to nothing really in terms of net outgoings.

I fail to understand why you have continuously brought up and criticized my opinions at the time, when your own opinions were almost identical to mine?

You felt he needed to improve and be dropped at the time, but where willing to give him until the end of the season to judge him…

Up to that point our opinions are identical, the only difference was that I ended it by saying, should he not show improvement, we should sell him.

Whereas, if he hadn’t shown the improvement that he has, I don’t know what you would have had us do…

The reality is, he has improved since then, and is a great asset to the squad.

I can’t keep explaining it over and over again.

Im sure it’s fair to say that Barfa came with a huge reputation. He had a blinding debut.

He got injured, came back and injured again.

He was simply not up to pace for months after his return.

I from the outset stated Barfa needed time to prove himself.

By the time you made your comments in January I still maintained he needed time and this season is his chance to prove himself.

He has always had the ability so why would you want to sell him before he’s had a chance to prove himself?

There’s a huge difference in what we are saying.

      (Quote)

  37. I’ll quote the last bit for you…

    JJ Feb 2012:
“We constantly hear from Alan Pardew about Ben Arfa’s incredible self confidence, which as a top sportsman is a fantastic attribute to have. Another former Frenchman, Lauren Robert had it in abundance, and he turned out to be a fine player for us. Ben Arfa has the potential to be far superior!

However, he must realise, that in a team sport like football, no one player can consider himself above another.

You need those ten other players on the pitch, and you need to respect and trust each other.

I still have high hopes that Ben Arfa can become the player we all know he has the talent to be, but only time will tell if he has the mentality to fit in.

What are your thoughts? Does Ben Arfa just need some time, or he just too much of an individual luxury for us right now?”

Still think our opinions are very different?? Would you like to argue some more?? 😆

      (Quote)

  38. @JJ
So what you are saying is if he didn’t show the form that he did at the end of the season you would have sold him?

What I’m saying is, he always had this talent, I can’t believe you couldn’t see it.

That is what Stardust was getting at.

Can you not see why that is a reasonable point?

      (Quote)

  39. @JJ

    I will simplify it;

You say that you would sell him if he did not show any improvement from January.

I say, he’s absolute class and he needs a full season to show his ability. That is why I would not sell him.

I knew he had it, you didn’t otherwise you wouldn’t have suggested selling him without having a full season under his belt.

      (Quote)

  41. Troy,
No, as I stated several times his ability and potential was never in doubt.

What I was getting at was that if we failed to find a system, and he failed to adjust to our system by the end of the season, that we should sell him.

    I also said:
“I suppose it is not really fair to judge him now, because he has only recently started to get some decent game time, and he hasn’t had the best of strikers to provide ammunition for.
It is difficult to put in crosses and through balls for strikers that are always stationary (Shola).
Perhaps it is this lack of confidence in our available strikers which causes him to be a bit more selfish? If that’s the case I don’t blame him. It may be a different story when he is supplying the likes of Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse.”

It turns out, that side of the arguement proved to be the correct on, because he has faired far better with more mobile strikers who have better anticipation. He came good towards the end of the season, and the rest is history.

Stardust on the other hand said:
Is it not true that less that 6 months ago you were slating Ben Arfa – saying he was USELESS and should be sold?

That my friend is a very different arguement, and a complete lie… If I was calling Ben Arfa useless, then by Stardusts definition, so were you…

      (Quote)

  42. Just admit we had very similar sentiments at the time and that your mate Stardust lied and then the debate is over…

  43. Blimey, it’s raining handbags in here! 😯

Here’s a new thought – as an attempt to get us talking about bloody anything else but who said what about whom, when. For those of us who:

    1. Consider Ashley and his mob to be crooks who are not to be trusted (that would include me)

    2. Want Ashley to sell the club (that would definitely NOT include me).

If you read the article below, you’ll get an idea of how much worse things could be. I work on the basis that there are no decent, honest football organisations; just varying degrees of crooks. If you’re going to be owned by one (all clubs are, imho), choose one that is at least bloody good at his job, and considers part of that job to keep his football club healthy.

The Glazers. There are not enough bedsheets in the whole of Manchester to do what we’d to to Ashley if he did what they’re doing. Just as well most of their supporters can’t make the trip from Surrey to demonstrate, eh?

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/glazers-gain-75m-in-manchester-united-stock-market-float-8030537.html

The key bit: of the £150m raised, £75m will go not to the club but into the Glazers’ pockets. Can you IMAGINE what we’d do if Ashley tried that??

Better the devil you know. Big time.

Ideally, I’d like Ashley to sell say 10% of the club to an organised supporters group, so that we had some kind of representation. But if that supporters group came to agreements as well as the lot on this blog, I can see why it would never work…

The rest for now, apart from praying we buy a central defender, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Just hope there are no bad surprises before deadline day.

      (Quote)

  49. JJ – couldn’t have put it better meself. We may yet see that 10%; I suspect Ashley would like to see the resentment towards him bubble down a bit beforehand, though.

  50. JJ

Seriously fella you need to take a look at yourself.

I provide an inside line with information known to players who know a player.

You go on a foul mouthed rant at me stating those ex-pro’s weren’t good enough to make it, that they were somehow bitter at their failure and Saylors success – yot you haven’t got a clue who they were, how good they were etc etc ad-infinitum.

You then go on a number of posts attacking my general personality – and use words that I should leave the blog. When all you should have done is ignore and disregard the post if you weren’t interested.

Thereon I (because you had attacked ex-players opinions (without foundation) I suggested that your view (as an example of Ben Arfa) shows on a simple level I would choose to believe an ex-pro who knew someone over you.

Then you try to accuse me of lying? Hilarious. I have seen Troy challenge you on this view for 6 months – so I have formed an opinion. JJ in a court of England and Wales – you can’t not challenge an opinion and label it as a lie. Simply because we all have opinions. Not once did I post a lie. Not once did I post a quote. I posted an opinion on a matter.

Now you say I am a liar. So far you have nothing to base that on as your thoughts are based on your opinion my opinion was unfair. So in fact YOU are the liar – as I have not told any lies, I have offered an opinion.

Now having been shown to lower the tone of the blog quite crudely – you have tried to shift the reason for your (I imagine) drink fuelled rants to a new argument. Ie the lies. You did not use profanity because of a lie (which wasn’t 😆 )

Now you attempt to regain a moral high. But you can’t because as you can see – I am sitting on a furry cloud just next to god and you are sitting at the bottom of a slurry pit looking up and smelling bad.

So – in an English Court of law – your above argument is broken and I win the case.

In a battle field duel, I turned up for pistols at dawn with a loaded weapon (my brain in case your not following) and you turned up with a pea shooter 😆

I was trying to even out the debate as I thought Stardust was making a valid point about what you said about Barfa and you were disputing it.

What is for certain, a post, no matter how long it is, where you clearly show months of pent up anger explode like a cataclysmic event, demonstrates the poster has had a full blown hissy fit.

    Wooo hoooo hoooo hoo:-). :-). :-). 🙂

  60. Ignoring the histrionics going on …

I got all excited when I saw Live Europa League in the programme guide for Friday morning. Then found out it’s Hearts v Liverpool. 👿

This love affair with Liverpool on Australian TV has got to end. Looks like I’ll be joining those tortured souls that ask for links every game. Never having done that sort of thing before, can anybody point me in a direction where I might start investigating.

And one for the techies – how easy is it to plug a laptop into a TV and will it compromise the picture quality if I can do it?

  61. Troy,
I realise you thought Stardust had made a valid point. But clearly he took his statement out of context and I think that debate has been put to rest now that you understand the my true opinion on Benny back then were in fact similar to yours.

    Anyway, I accept your apology. 😉 😛 …

Now the only debate remaining, is how long will Stardy bash away on his keyboard for before he realises I don’t give a **** about anything he has to say? 😀

  63. JJ – good try to swerve but the fact I have not posted on that thread suggests I did not read it. So where did my opinion form from ? On threads and over time. My opinion was not a divine intervention – you have shaped it. You have been challenged on it for months.

So again – please demonstrate how I am a liar?

BUT for the record this debate did not start at this element, you have introduced it as a distraction. You ridiculed ex-players without foundation thereon you projected their opinions at me and called me a ‘*****’ for relaying information.

You lowered the tone of the blog in a unabashed foul mouthed tirade. Then you try to change to reason for the argument starting.

You’ve been found out JJ – you have no honour, class or integrity.

So JJ – you look extremely dishonest, machaevellian and scurillous -. You sir are a rapscallion!

Sir I throw my glove at you.

  64. icedog@282 – ITV4 are showing the home leg. I don’t think there’s any UK coverage of the away leg. Kim thought it might be being shown just on ITV.com but I can’t find any info.
