The group stages of the competition kick off in earnest and Newcastle have found themselves drawn together with S.C. Maritimo of Purtugal, FC Girondins de Bordeaux of France and Club Brugge of Belgium. Together the four of us make up Group D with the top two progressing forward to the round of 32.
It’s in the small island of Madeira, off the South-West coast of Portugal that our European campaign really begins. The island capital of Funchal, home of our opponents S.C. Maritimo, is actually closer to Casablanca in Morocco than it is to Lisbon in Portugal, but I’ll spare you any more geography lessons!
Team news: Newcastle
Hatem Ben Arfa serves the third and final game of a suspension earned during his days with Marseille. Cheik Tiote, Ryan Taylor, Tim Krul and Danny Simpson are all out and Fabricio Coloccini is highly unlikely to feature. Papiss Cisse misses out through illness whilst Demba Ba has been left out of the squad entirely.
Team news: S.C. Maritimo
Maritimo have just one absentee going into the match. Midfielder Rodrigo Antonio was sent off in the second leg of their play-off clash with FC Dila of Georgia and will miss the game through suspension. Apart from that they have a clean bill of health.
Team selection
Once more we are likely to see a change from the side that played at Everton on Monday night, and with a Premier League game against Norwich City to consider on Sunday afternoon I’d tend to agree with that. However it’s all about striking the balance between trying to do well in the Europa League and trying not to impact on our domestic season.
Alan Pardew has already admitted that he will change the team around, but what changes can he really make? And how far do you go with said changes?
In terms of defence there isn’t a lot we can do. Perhaps we could bring in James Tavernier and Shane Ferguson at right and left back respectively, but then you are relying on Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor playing three games in six days. Perhaps Tavernier could slot into central defence in place of either Taylor or Williamson instead?
In midfield I’m actually not too worried. We have the resources in that part of the pitch to completely change things around with players like Gael Bigirimana, James Perch, Sammy Ameobi, Dan Gosling, Romain Amalfitano, Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux all able to fill in.
Up front we are struggling again. Shola Ameobi and Adam Campbell are the only two fit recognised strikers we have taken to Portugal. Mind you Campbell scored again for the ressies yesterday!
Did you know?
This is the fourth side from Portugal we have faced in European competition. The other three are Sporting Lisbon, Vitoria Setubul and FC Porto.
This is United’s 17th season of European football.
We have played Maritimo before, way back in 1982 in a friendly match that we won 1-0 courtesy of a Chris Waddle goal.
Shola Ameobi is our second highest European goalscorer ever with 12 goals, including that goal in the Nou Camp all those years ago. Mind you, he is some way behind Alan Shearer who has 30 European strikes for United to his name.
Final thoughts
I want to see us do well more than anything else, and whatever team that plays should go there in the belief that they can win. Realistically a point away from home isn’t a bad result if we make sure we win our home fixtures so I’ll be happy with that.
Maritimo struggle with scoring goals and have done since they sold their start striker to Sevilla over the summer so there is always a chance that we could get something if we can keep things tight at the back.
Now is the time for some of the young lads and fringe players to shine. They will be given a chance and it’s up to them to take it with both hands.
Howay the lads!

I posted a starting line up on the earlier post and I’ll stick with it. I want to see Tav RB and Fergie LB and Vukic and Campbell up front.
I have no idea how the result will go, simply because I don’t know enough about our opposition. But I do think it’s important for these players to get game time for the rest of our season – and it’s time to see if they are good enough.
Sharpy17(Quote)
If it’s true they are having trouble scoring then if we can keep it tight at the back then we could get something out the game . 😉 Be nice to see Fergie and Tav get game time looking forward to young campbell getting on aswell.

Very pissed off , I have ESPN but they are not showing the game in the Republic of Ireland for some reason. Arseholes.

I’m reliably informed Bumbling Boris has worked out an answer and it’s going to destroy me. 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
I’ve got a an excited feeling. I’ve been waiting all day. Let’s see this. 😛
Troy Stavers(Quote)
Wooo hoooo! Stormin Stavers has been texting me all day, urging me to get on the blog. He sees his latest blog persona caught in the vortex and disappearing rapidly down the plug hole. I panned him this morning as I’ve been panning him the last few days, and he still hasn’t answered any of my brick bats. 😆
To be fair he’s a good sport. Just takes them on the chin without hitting back. I’m bent double every time with, “We might now be Premier champions if it wasn’t for his [Mikey’s] greed by him wanting all his losses and more back.” Followed by, “I’m not praising FFS, but many say we would have gone out of business if he had stayed. How does anyone know that?” 😳 😆 😆 😆 😆
Troy Tempest is going to explode with that one if I keep quoting it though. The temperature’s rising and the powder he was keeping dry for Dekka is now primed for me. He’s just letting me slap him around, failing to put his guard up and hanging on in the corner, hoping desperately to regain his composure. He can’t keep this up much longer surely? 😯
Troyer, Bumbling Boris is delighted you’ve finally come forward with his blog comment about Curtis Good because he couldn’t be arsed to trawl for it. You’ve been storing it like a professional blog assassin stores posts, but now you think Bumbling Boris has dropped another rick, you couldn’t resist bringing it out. The trouble is, by doing so, you’ve exposed yourself as misrepresenting it. Poor form, fella! 😳
So, when you’re ready to re-print it, and then print next to it your representation of what I had said, I’m happy to start talking. In the meantime, I’ll keep slapping you about the face, fella. 😆 😆
Wooooo hooooooo! Let’s have another song while I slap you some more. 😆 😆 😆 😆

I’m neither seething nor happy. I feel kinda let down. I can’t be any more honest than that.
If you don’t answer my questions then I can no longer communicate with you.
I won’t debate anything with Aussie or a few others who have hissy fitted.
Only those with backbones. 😳

I feel numb. Your my brother. I thought you would have a back bone. 😳
You need to answer or you are a shame on the family. 😳
Troy Stavers(Quote)
As Toonsy says we have very little depth up front or across the back four. I don’t mind seeing Ferguson at LB but Tavernier looked extremely shaky earlier on in Europa. Gosling played in the reserves but maybe we could start him at RB and see how it goes. Lots to choose from in the midfield. I would try Campbell with Shola in behind. Who else do we have? Shocking we didn’t replace Best or Peter. Should be a chance for Amalfitano in the midfield as well. Very interested to see what Pardew’s starting lineup will be.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
That vortex is surely too much now? 😉
You want to avoid the substantive points about the Carroll cash (still waiting for that response you promised before you disappeared for days), the due diligence, keeping your powder dry for 31 August, whether you had heard of our signings before we’d signed them etc.
Print my original statement about Good if you want to, and then print your misrepresentation. I’m happy to respond in full even though it is you just clutching at any straw to avoid the issues! Of course, you could always give us a song instead! 😆
Did I mention I’m bent double every time with, “We might now be Premier champions if it wasn’t for his [Mikey’s] greed by him wanting all his losses and more back.” Followed by, “I’m not praising FFS, but many say we would have gone out of business if he had stayed. It’s like the problems you had with Trumpet. They refuse to answer your questions so you might as well not engage with them.
@Kim
Have you seen much of Campbell? Weve had good prospects who flitter with the first team but never make it. Joe Allon, though he went on to play for a poor Chelsea side and more recently Chopra. Even Ranger when it comes to more recent. Do you see more in Campbell than those mentioned?
Troy Stavers(Quote)
Time to find out if our youth policy is actually worthwhile!
Newkie(Quote)

Would you play an under strength side away from home? It’s a risky policy.
I want us to progress to the latter stages and hopefully get another trip to Milan.
The best weekend away I’ve had!
If the youth get us thru to the latter stages, I wonder if Pards sticks with them or drops them.
Troy Stavers(Quote)
Troy-well if understrength is anything other than our first 11, then it has to be understrength doesn’t it? The key as always is finding the right balance, but I do want to see time for Tav, Amal, Bigi, Fergie, Vuckic and sub roles for Sammeobi and Campbell.
Newkie(Quote)
Troy > In truth I have only seen Campbell the once on TV when he did impress the little time he was on and some you tube footage .I know there have been glowing reports on him on here from people who watch him a lot so really just hopeing he fullfills his potential 😉 . It’s his golden chance to show what he can do in these European games ,just hope Pards gives him ample opportunity really.

I prefer the European games to playing the domestic cups.

@Kim
Aye. Ranger I a complete ****! A total waster. Though he has something and would be a lot better had he stuck in, I’m not so sure he was a goal scorer.
Troy Stavers(Quote)
Troy-Yeah, I kind of agree with you on both accounts but as this is the first game of the group I wouldn’t mind seeing a fair few of the youths out there. Strongest team out there for all the home games and then subbies for the youngsters.
Right now theres less/no pressure on the youngsters (best for blooding them in) and we can’t afford any more major first team injuries. When first teamers start coming back to full health we can get a better blend of youth and experience.
Newkie(Quote)
I find I have to agree with Pardew making the league the number one priority. After all, that is what will decide how long he remains our manager/coach thing.
But like Troy, I would have made Europe our number one cup comp, ahead of both domestic cups.
Its a shame we cant play our strongest team tomorrow, but likewise its a golden oportunity for the young pretenders to show what they have in their lockers. This will be there one real chance to shine and make a name for themselves. They need to really grasp the bull by the horns and give a good account of themselves.
I would be amazed if Shola plays 90 mins, so young Campbell will almost certainly get his moment in the spotlight. I hope he does well, as it would be great for another local lad to come through.
Howay the Lads.
0-1 will do nicely to get the ball rolling.

Aye. I’ve got no time for people who can’t admit they are wrong and won’t answer questions.
I’ve never had that problem with you or many others. It’s the limited few. Get them in every group.
@Bootsy
I know nothing of the opposition so im trusting Pards to know what team is required.
I was just a bit alarmed on a few occasions during the qualifier as they were not meant to be good but they scored a cracking goal and caused a few problems.
Troy Stavers(Quote)
May I take this opportunity to be the first to say how refreshing it is not to have to scroll through the brotherly bickering. I said afew days ago I found it funny but I have to admit it was getting a bit tedious. It’s an open forum for anyone to use but it was starting to take over a little bit.
Anyway, I would really like to see Vukic and Campbell up front and use Shola later in the game. I’d also like to see Abied play, I’d really hope he’d have a bit of fire in his belly and prove we shouldn’t send him out on loan.
2-1 the toon for me like.

Shame, I don’t like calling my brother but I’m embarrassed for him.
C’est la vie .
Troy Stavers(Quote)
well we dont have much choice other than to trust Pardew. But sometimes he does leave me scratching my head in amazement, with his team selections.
Clearly he knows more than me, but imo he over complicates things by constantly playing Lads out of their natural position.
Gonna be really interesting to see what line up he puts out tomorrow.
We have started every match this season poorly, I hope he gets a grip of the Lads before KO and sends them out fired up for a change.
Beardsleys Boots(Quote)
Does anyone know what the problem is with Tiote. ❓
Beardsleys Boots(Quote)
i am a little surprised that Good has not travelled with the team to Portugal ,having captained the ressies against the Scum yesterday i was thinking the coaching team must think the lad has something . I would have thought taking him and giving him a sniff of the first team was good for his development .
Axel(Quote)
Newkie @ 50 I see what you mean but if we don’t get through then well have through away a big chance.
I’m all for younguns getting a chance but IMO the way to do it is 2 maybe at the most played with the 1st team as they can look out for them etc, but if the younguns are getting played with mostly bench players the bench players are more concerned of not fuking up themselves and have no time to help the younguns
Big Dave(Quote)
Axel im sure if Pards thought he was ready for the 1st team he would have took him considering how stretched we are, so maybe he isn’t as good just yet as some think he is.
After all Pards did say he was a future prospect, and I don’t think he meant so close in the future
Big Dave(Quote)
I think Pardew has probably thought the home games in the group stages will be the games to win and the away games will be an opportunity to go and collect as many points as they can. I’m sure we may well see a stronger line up in the home games.
I really home we play well tomorrow night as well. I think Pardew could do with a break and the first team players could do with a kick up the ****.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Could you imagine spending an entire day with Troy and B&B. Do people still speak like they do? Feel like I’ve slipped back into the 17th century when they are debating sometimes. 😆
Looking forward to some European football with the Toon. I am happy to play the youngsters. See how they do.
JJ(Quote)
Just on a side note.
The more I think about the Everton game, the more I think it was a brilliant result.
Tiote, Colo and Krul missing. those are probably our three best players.
Anita looking useful on the right in defence.
I can see us giving Norwich a hiding if we get some players fit.
______________________Krul_______________________
Anita__________Taylor__________Colo__________Santon
____________Jonas___________Tiote________________
Obertan_____________Cabaye_______________Ben Arfa
_____________________Ba________________________
I know Pards likes to play two up front. But I wouldn’t mind seeing these guys in this formation.
JJ(Quote)
BIGDAVE your right that Pardew said he is one for the future ,but he said that about Bigi & Amalfitano when we signed them but he has took them , just thought with the injured defenders we have , he would of took Good .
Axel(Quote)
JJ – you may be loathed to say it but Simmo was also missing. Like him or not, he’s a regular first teamer and the rest of the players know what to expect. Also Ba was missing in the first half. Fortunately though, lady luck was wearing black and White on Monday night.
I do like the look of that line up for Norwich tho but my IPhone has cut off the left flank. I’ve got S for LB so guess it’s Santon, and B for LM 😕 ?
Sharpy17(Quote)
Axel maybe he is taking a bit longer to settle, and I think Bigi and Amalfitano played at a better level than Good 😕
Big Dave(Quote)
JJ @ 63 so what about Benny is he not 1 of the best player ❓
I really don’t think Harper for Krul made that much difference, because Krul is still a bit clumsy at times and his kicking is woefull and results in the other team getting it 8 out of 10 times.
Big Dave(Quote)
Couldn’t have really had a more exotic game to return to European competition. 🙂
DJG(Quote)
I haven’t seen Good at all so I don’t know if he is any……… oh dear. 😮

SHARPY17 @67
‘Fortunately though, lady luck was wearing black and White on Monday night.’
Meh, she wasn’t when Cisse put a great chance wide of the post, or Anita had it cleared off the line in the first half. If Everton were that great they could surely hang on to a lead for 5 minutes right? Truth is they weren’t that good on Monday compared to how they played in the first 2 games.
DJG(Quote)
Axel@ 64 I was saving that point for Stormin Stavers because, to read his posts in August (when he was keeping his powder dry for midnight 31st), the only signing of any real worth that we had made for this season was Anita. Bigi, Amal, and Good were clearly not on his first team radar for this season.
Blackley & Brownlie(Quote)
quite happy with the league so far. OK we are winding up gradually, but for me the next two matches (Norwich and Reading) are must win games, and will define our season.
No if’s or buts or excuses. 6 points are essential, If we are harbouring any notions of maintaining a top 6 finish this season.
Anything less than 6 points, and I’m afraid its mid to lower league finish which is more likely. We simply have to be putting these two clubs to the sword, home and away.
fingers crossed then.
Beardsleys Boots(Quote)
Meanwhile I think we can look forwards to our european experience without any pressure on the Lads whatsoever. What will be will be.
I’ll put my neck on the block now tho and dare to suggest we will top our group come 6th Dec. 😯 😯 😛

Beardsleys Boots(Quote)
I’m watching you, Stormin Stavers. Shame on you! 😳
The good thing about the blog is that, however hard you try, you cannot misrepresent someone and take their quotes out of context because it’s all there in black and white. 😎
Your post @55 to Sharpy is typical of the misrepresentations you come up with, fella. “I thoroughly enjoyed it but The Bumbler refused to answer or explain himself.”
NOT TRUE. BORIS HAS AGREED TO ANSWER AND TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF. Poor Boris has been more than happy to answer all your questions and has laid down the challenge. He has explained that he is prepared to do this, and has all the answers ready at his fingertips. He is prepared to do this even though your questions are clearly a side show and a circus distraction from the questions you can’t and won’t answer. He is prepared to do this even though he has a bank of relevant, substantive questions that you have so far failed to address.
Boris has explained that his only proviso is that you should now quote his original post, and the few preceding posts that put it in context. He says this because, as everyone knows, it is very easy to take one line and take it out context, and it is something that the likes of you, fella, do when you’re looking in desperation for a diversionary escape. If you want to bring it up, you have to post it in full.
You have only just posted the small paragraph that contained it, even though you have clearly stored it like a blog assassin for weeks. Now post the full post and the few others that led up to it. That shouldn’t be too difficult for a blog assassin. 😐
Now let me demonstrate a typical example of how you work, Stormin. As I have said above, you say @55 to Sharpy, “I thoroughly enjoyed it but The Bumbler refused to answer or explain himself.” I will answer like a typical Troy Tempest if the boot had been on the other foot, “How have I refused to answer or explain myself? Tell me? I’ve said I would answer and explain myself. Your statement is clearly not true, Boris. You are making a right numpty of yourself here, fella. You’re digging yourself deeper and deeper. It’s embarrassing. I’m not going any further until you tell me where Troy has said he refuses to answer and explain himself. Woooo hoooo. I’m waiting Bumbler. It’s all there. I’m only asking a reasonable request of you to set out my original quote in full where I have refused to answer and explain myself. Come on Bumbler! No twisting and turning. We must deal with this point first before we can move on.” 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
And if Boris had said, “Hmm. I’m seriously embarrassed. I refuse to debate anything with anyone who bottles it”? The Wooooo hoooo hoooos that would have followed! 😳
Finally, Stormer, I note you say @ 40 to Big Dave, “It’s like the problems you had with Trumpet. They refuse to answer your questions so you might as well not engage with them.”
Wasn’t it your marra, Big Dave, who stonewalled when I disagreed with him on his favourite “due diligence” point? Even though it became apparent from his non-engagement that the poor lad was uncomfortable about answering my points, wasn’t it you who called me a bottler for having the good grace to drop it and not to press him? 😳
“Cringeworthy”, fella! Remember that word of yours when you accused me of looking to fellow bloggers for support? 😆 😆 😆
Stormin, you’re now an embarrasment if you continue to use that disclaimer. What’s Aussie going to say, fella? 😳 You’ve gotta be looking a bit sheepish. Think about it. 🙄
