Game On! Manchester United v Newcastle United

Game On at Old Trafford
Welcome one and all to our ‘Game On’ article which this evening will take us through every twist and turn of the third round League Cup (or Capital One Cup as it’s known now) ti against Manchester United.

It’s not going to be an easy match. Going to Old Trafford is tough whatever team Sir Alex Ferguson ultimately decides to name, but to progress in the competition we’ll have to beat the perennial title contenders and cup winners in their own back yard.

The League Cup is generally known as a competition that more teams can win. The feeling is that the big boys don’t really give it their full attention and play weakened teams giving other sides more of a chance of progressing. Personally I think it’s a bit of a myth and all managers name a team that they believe can win the game on the night whilst balancing the requirements of their squad. Look at the winners and you’ll see the same, familiar names popping up…

To get a result we’ll need the referee to be fair and unbiased. I hope Manchester born Wythenshawe resident, Anthony Taylor, can do just that. Personally I don’t think it’s right that a referee can take charge of a game that is five miles away from his house at this level of football but then that is just my opinion. Besides, you never know, he might be a fan of the blue half of Manchester anyway!

As ever team news will be detailed below as and when it becomes available and for a little bit of background on the fixture you can always have a look at my match preview by clicking here.

As mentioned in said preview, the game is live on Sky tonight which is fine for me and the others that aren’t going to the game, but those outside of the UK or those that don’t have Sky may need a hand so if anyone can find a decent stream of the game then please feel free to share it via the ‘comments’ section below.

Which just about wraps it up.

  1. Looks a bit shaky to me especially at full back. I guess Pardew is giving Obertan his chance against his old club to inspire him? A bit weak up front as well unless Shola plays like he does against Sunderland. All the best to the lads. Make us proud! 😀

  2. …think there’s goals in this one like.

Was a little disheartened when I saw our team, then saw there’s. I very much doubt there’ll be clean sheets here. 😯

Hope to see Marveaux put in a shift, perfect opportunity. Obertan looks like he’ll have some tracking back to do with Buttner running riot down their left. Time for Tavernier to start kicking some *** too.

…ah, and good luck to young Haris!

    HOWAY THE LAAAAIIIIRDS!! 😯

  3. Think its the right team. Important we give fringe team a run out and keep first team fresh for league. I fancy sholla to grab a goal tonight

  4. …ahh yeah, and it’s a fucking disgrace the ref is from Wythenshawe.

Even if by chance he does support someone else it’s still wrong.

Yeah, of course every neutral will have their favourites, but to have a ref from Manchester (biggest footballing city in the UK) refereeing a Manchester game is just wrong. Faaarg knows what happened there. 😕

…we’re gona win 6-5 anyway, so nee botha 😎

  5. With them playing Hernandez, Wellbeck, and Rooney it sounds like it might be 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-3. Very aggressive lineup from Fergie. If they hold at the back it looks very tough for us. Shola will have to have an incredible game or Vuckic with one of his long range efforts. Looks like a lot of work for Willo and Collo.

  6. Johno, I think this game is the perfect game for fringe players.
Shitty cup, at Old Trafford. Might as well chuck some younguns on.

…flipside though, is Ferguson has too (with the exception of attack), and we’d have more of a chance of progressing with our first team out there.

  7. We’re not much different MM, in fairness.
…we have Colo and Tiote, they have Rooney and Hernandez. 😯

  8. Think this game could go either way, Bloody hell last time we won at Old Trafford, Tudor and Barrowclough scored, feel ancient now.

  9. Wouldn’t mind seen cisse at some point second half. Give that manc young back four a run for their money

  10. Shame really. There’s been no difference between the two sides really and we’ve caused them problems. Not out of it by any stretch but conceding just before half time is a *******.

Yeah Gosling could have perhaps fouled Anderson, but he was beaten fair and square and Elliot could do nowt about the shot.

Still time to go though 🙂

  11. Shola is by himself up front. Beautiful knockdown to Gosling who did nothing with it. Elliot has been excellent, as has Tavernier so far at LB. Obertan wastes so many chances. Vuckic is not going to give us enough in attack. Good experience for the youngsters but we need a change or two at the half if we hope to win it.

  12. Ash,
Gosling should have done better, but if Williamson had made half an effortto stick a foot out he would have blocked it. If anything he pulled his body away as if he was scared of getting struck by the ball… 😕

  13. We have had a lot of good possession on the edge of the Man U box, but we are woefully lacking class in the final third.

Obertan, Vukic and Marveaux have all disappeared for the last 15 of the second half. That’s too many players to carry…

“This defence is pathetic. Williamson has been beyond useless this game.”

    What’s the scapegoat done now?

  15. Have we looked capable of scoring ?
JJ after sundays game lots were saying Willo wasn’t as bad as what people make out 😯 so is he just having an off night or is he just useless in general 😆

  16. Toonsy, love your comments, but please at times take the Black and white glasses off, its manure that have created all the chances, its really about time AP gave up on some of the toon players out there, they are simply not good enough, think we all know who they are.

Possession wise and in midfield there has been no different. However, Man U look far more likely to score. We have huge gaps in defence.

  18. Elliot had a good first half, Shola laboured manfully, Obertan started well, but Vukic has looked poor, and Marveaux disappeared. Agreed Williamson could have blocked Anderson for the goal, but imo it was Gosling’s job to block Anderson…

Pity really to concede just before half time, but if we continue like this we’ll lose for sure.

  19. ASH101 – No tinted glasses hear mate. Yes Man U have created chances but we’ve also had our own, or am I just imagining our attempts on goal and have colluded with Sky to alter the match stats? 😆

      (Quote)

  20. Gosling weak as shandy and Willo throw your body at the ball and block the shot.
When Willo plays we are **** scared teams run in behind us and defend far too deep like Everton they are approaching our 18 yard box without any effort.

  21. “but if we continue like this we’ll lose for sure.”…. 1 nowt down, is that a “Colemanball”? 😉 😆

I think Willo is useless against any mobile strike force. He turns like a tanker. He is a poor man’s Andy O’Brien if you ask me. Which isn’t a compliment.

Against Blackburn, Stoke, West Ham. He’s fine. Had that been Steven Taylor, Anderson’s shot would have been blocked.

  23. ash1001@57…agree 100% mate. I’m getting fed up with the “experience for the young players” line. Vukic has shown absolutely nothing apart from how to give the ball away…

Cannot for the life of me understand what you are getting at JJ. Willaimson hasn’t been bad at all … 🙄

      (Quote)

  24. Scapegoat Williamson getting the balls again I see 😆

If he put his foot out and it deflected in he would have got grief for not keeping his foot down 😆

    Funny really.

When you say Vuckic has been poor is that because he hasn’t scored a hat trick. Tell me when a chance was created for him by our devastating midfield or do you expect him to beat six players and chip the keeper

On Willo we will agree to disagree but for what it is worth I think he is a waste of space

      (Quote)

  27. I hope Cisse gets a half with Vuckic off. We need a lot more in attack as ManU may score another with this lineup. Difficult to come back but not impossible. Anderson has been their best player.

  28. Toby @64

Exactly, with Willo we are forced to defend deep which puts us on the back foot and we are carved open by teams with movement and good passing with absolute ease.

To compliment someone I usually moan about all the time. I think Shola has done very well.

      (Quote)

  29. They have a totally youthfull back 4 and we aint creating any problems for them, so what does that say about our supoosed experienced forwards, simple get rid of including Stroller.

He got a hell of of lot of praise for the chest on to BA against Everton, but think about this, what if he meant to head it and missed it by a mile and it hit his chest, possible and maybe probable.
