Game On! Bordeaux v Newcastle

Game On at Bordeaux
Newcastle conclude their Europa League group stage campaign this evening by visiting group leaders Bordeaux.

Only a win for United will be enough to ensure top spot for Alan Pardew and his side and anything else will mean that second place in the group will have to do.

In fairness the important thing is done and that is qualification for both sides. The only issue to decide is who will get the coveted seeded draw which will see the team that grabs first place be able to take advantage of a home game in the second leg of the next round. Naturally that might not be an advantage at all in the end and if you want to progress you need to beat what is in front of you anyway.

The big early team news in the supposed inclusion of Nile Ranger who will start a game for United for the first time in a very long time. His history aside, he has apparently been applying himself in training and doing the basics, such as turning up on time, right. He has a chance and now it’s up to him to take it.

The game is live on ESPN and is also being broadcast by a number of overseas TV channels so picking up a stream should be easy enough. Normal rules apply, those being that if you happen to come across a good stream then please post a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will hopefully be updated in full below as and when it becomes available. I say hopefully as I’ll be on my way to Amsterdam and may be caught in traffic so I’m hoping someone else will be about to keep an eye on things. If not keep an eye on the comments as team news will be posted by someone somewhere.

Howay the lads!

  1. “seriously… did we expect better??” – probably not Tattyheed, but I too had HOPED to see something better than what was on show last night.
    👿
I dont see Pardew making things much better for the remainder of the season, unless we get back a bit of LUCK.

  2. ST – that might change this month mate.

B&B/BB – please don’t get me wrong, I have been critical of Pardew this season. For me he has got it wrong a lot this season. I don’t think his side looks organized, I don’t think he gets it right enough and then doesn’t know how to fix it.
I don’t think we can completely judge him as a manager, because he hasn’t had the backing of the board financial and he’s suffered with injuries this season. But as a coach is agree, he’s getting it very wrong at the moment.

On a brighter note though, SSN saying that Santon, Ba, Tiote and Benny are back in training today, so that’s promising.

  3. Just been reading what Pardew had to say about last night – new excuse alert!! – it was the pitches fault.
Also said he wants a stronger squad with more depth …. Don’t we all Al!, lets hope it happens.

Also reading the paper talk and suggest we are looking to activate a release clause of £3.5m for Mo Diame at WHU – another player we could have signed on a free transfer in the summer!!

  4. Didn’t see the game so won’t comment on performances. We put out a team with 6 youngsters in it an no experienced 1st teamers to help them through, so to judge the youngsters is unfair IMHO. Whether Pardew had a choice is mute given the injuries and EPL form. Personally I am unsurprised by the team or result. To be expected. The performance, judging by the comments on here it was poor. However we have seen that when only 1 or 2 play in the first team they generally do OK. So my question is to those who saw the game is “Was it that bad?” Or were we expecting too much?

  5. @ 143 – i think your right about pardew.

i could accept it if we were playing decent football but getting beat – you would just put that down to a bad run or being unlucky in a few games.but this brand of football being dished up by him shows me that he’s nowt but a tacticless chancer that’s out of his depth. + his patter stinks.

it’s time for carver to stop spending most of his time surfing the toon blogs checking what the fans are saying and spend more time on the training pitch.

i reckon it’ll be the dreaded vote of confidence by the end of december – whilst they trawl around for a replacement yes-man who will gob off on their behalf.

      (Quote)

  6. Prem – it really was that bad.
Yes, I thought we would probably lose, but not in that manner.
The only positive worth a mention, was the performance once again of Rob Elliot, without which we could easily have shipped another 3 or 4 goals.
I just think for the young players, the chance to show what you can do doesn’t come around too often. You have to take those chances when they come.
Sadly, the majority of our youngsters have shown yet again, that they simply aren’t anywhere near the standard required to progress at this level. Most of them need a season or more in the championship or lower.
Gigi, has shown more than all the rest put together, and has REAL potential for the future. The rest are average at best.

      (Quote)

  7. I think Carver is part of the problem.
we are witnessing the fruits of his labours, but I dont think he is capable of lifting the training to another level.

  8. i would have thought there’s more chance of batty signing off the old nat king than sammy has of becoming a first choice player.

    it just wont happen.

that said – he’ll probably still be hanging around the place in ten years time.

a chip off the old block.

  9. ROY C great to see you on the blog mate, and i agree the ameobi brothers are both the same,fk sackless, they do have a gift “of the gob” 😉

  12. Prem – It was so bad, it was comical, and I ended up laughing at the big joke. A team that plays long ball football that can rarely win the header, and when it does, cannot pick up the second ball. Ameobi 😳 can’t head, trap, run with the ball without getting it tangled up, or challenge without fouling. 😳 An absolute embarrassment! And a long ball team that gets caught out by the long ball! 😳 🙄 🙁 😆 👿 😥 😯 🙄

Ha Ha a fine left footed scuff indeed. Typical shola guff.

  15. Troy – we all know Pardews job is safe so long as we survive.
The fact he is utterly clueless means nothing to an equally clueless regime.
So long as we stay in the money league, nowt else matters. 👿

      (Quote)

  16. Troy – No I’m not asking for him to be sacked now. I think he should do the honourable thing and offer his resignation after such an abject performance, the culmination of a series of poor performances (Wigan was a blip). Do you give a man more time if he asks for it and says he can turn it around, even though he appears lost as to what to do. Yes, but only so much. If we get in serious danger of relegation, then he’s got to go one way or the other. This is a results business. He knows that. Whether you like it or not, statistics show that a man in his position (two season gone) won’t last much longer.

Are you still wanting to stick with him season after season provided we’re not in danger?

    @Bootsy

I was asking Blackley & Brownlie as he has been slagging Pardew off to the point where I can’t believe he doesn’t want him sacked. Though he won’t say those actual words. 😉

      (Quote)

  18. well he wont ever resign. imo Thats a pipe dream
    few managers/coaches do.
It would be admitting he was **** and his ego wont allow him to do that.
The sad thing is he actually believes he is doing a great job, and can challenge for the top 4.

      (Quote)

  19. Troy – I know, but was just adding my 2p worth. 😕

B&B “Are you still wanting to stick with him season after season provided we’re not in danger?” – Thats what the regime want. They call it stability 😕
Said it many times before, but mid table mediocrity would suit Fatty & co just fine.
There’s not a great deal of difference in tv money, from 4th to 16th. But finishing 5th brings other complications, like having to spend money on new players to keep the wolves at bay. Would be a lot better not to finish in that position again. 😯

  20. Bradford City have been kicked out of the FA Cup for fielding Newcastle-loanee, Curtis Good, in their Second Round tie against Brentford.

Written confirmation of the player’s eligibility was not received by the 12pm deadline on the day of the game which ended 1-1.

City have the right of appeal but if that proves to be unsuccessful Brentford will play the winners of the Bury and Southend replay

Glad we’re not the only useless ones when it comes to administration, but this has a whiff of lambastad all over it.

    @Bootsy

I can’t understand how you or B&B hate the man so much but don’t call for his sacking now?

Surely it matters not what the board think or want. You’re a supporter and if you don’t see him improving things then you should put the pressure on the board.

I personally don’t believe we could attract a decent manager and therefore am happy to stick with him.

However B&B seems to believe we won’t have a problem getting a better manager.

      (Quote)

  22. There’s got to be something wrong with the coaching/training at SJP. So many of our players just stand and watch the game. They hold position as if that’s all they’re expected to do. There’s no bloody running off the ball, offering support, moving into space. Anita seems to be the only player we have that does that.
Maybe it’s time to get rid of the geordie boys in the background and bring in some foreign coaches. From Ajax perhaps?

      (Quote)

  23. Georgio – I’ve been banging that drum for ages mate.
Out training staff are old school cloggers, which is why we play the way we do. ****.
Troy – Pointless calling for Pardews head, even tho thats what is needed.
    Been over this before. 😈
Unfortunately we are lumbered with him, because as you say “we wont be able to attract a decent manager”. No manager worth his salt would come to NUFC and work under this regime, along with the constraints that go with the job.
Unlike you tho, I’m not happy about it.
    👿

      (Quote)

  24. The pundits lastnight said that they had made 9 changes to their team but they played like a team and you could see they were up for it.
But we just looked like we were going through the motions,Waddle was asked if he thought any of our younger / benchers had staked a claim and he said no and I agree with him 100%.
I just can’t understand why there was no passion or desire to try to grab the chance they had, there is clearly a lack of motivation about our team, as it’s not like its unusual for a lack lustre performance as it seem’s to be the norm this season

      (Quote)

  25. DAVE always said sumit was up,do you think the players are fed up with the tactics used, there doesnt seem to be any “go”in the players imo 🙁

      (Quote)

  26. Boots – from the stats last neet, pity we can’t score from corners or crossers like!!.

What I don’t understand is last year when we played 4-4-2 we looked hard to beat and defensively solid. 4-3-3 we looked offensively dangerous and were brilliant on the counter attack. Pardew seemed to have a good understanding of his squad and how to set his team up to win games. Surely that wasn’t fluke?!.
But how is he getting it so drastically wrong this season?, it’s the same players!!

I really don’t know how I feel about the idea of sacking Pardew yet. I don’t see us getting relegated this season (and I don’t say that as if its an achievement or anything). But I think Pardew needs time to get players back from injury and hopefully a couple of signs he wanted in the summer.
I agree with Troy, I don’t really see another manager we could realistically attract that would make that much of a difference. That said, my opinion may well change depending on the outcome of the Fulham game. If Pards has Santon, Tiote, Ba and Benny available for that game then he’s only missing Saylor and Cabs from his strongest 11.

      (Quote)

  27. Dave – do you think that might be down to the fact that every single one of them know for a fact that regardless of how they perform, Pardew would pick the same 11 players everytime whether they are playing well or not.

      (Quote)

  28. Let’s see how it goes when key players return and if reinforcements arrive in january. If it’s still **** and no one of note arrives maybe then is the time to get out the bedsheets and hopefully not too late .

  29. Sharpy @ 181 – “If Pards has Santon, Tiote, Ba and Benny available for that game then he’s only missing Saylor and Cabs from his strongest 11.”
Exactly, and he will have run out of excuses too.

    Icedog @ 180 – what tactics ❓
    😕

      (Quote)

  30. Sharpy@182 . I was listening to Lawro on the radio the other day ,just caught the tail end of a conversation he was having . I have no idea who he was talking about but he made a point of saying that when you have no decent competition for your place you don’t bust a gut like when someone is breathing down your neck . Now lambastard and Jabba won’t understand this not being proper football men but you would think Pards would spell it out to them somehow. 😕

      (Quote)

  31. I’m quite confident the clueless wonders will TRY to get a couple defenders over the line in January.
I think the damage will be done by then tho. Especially after Decembers matches.

      (Quote)

  32. Pardew at least acknowledges we were poor and was disappointed in several youngsters. The overall lack of effort has to be the most disturbing thing about it. But Shola hardly showed much leadership in that respect. He had one decent chance but didn’t seem to work hard off the ball. Too much of a coaster for that kind of game. Surely this is a hint from Pardew to Ash/Llam about the need for reinforcements as well.

      (Quote)

  33. Sharpy – “I don’t see us getting relegated this season (and I don’t say that as if its an achievement or anything).” – I would be interested to know who you see as favs for the drop this season, if not NUFC. and no offence but can we revisit this point after the everton match on 2nd Jan. ❓ I think you or I may feel differently then. 🙁
Carry on playing like we are, and I WOULD consider avoiding the drop as an achievement.

      (Quote)

  34. BB and Sharpy I still think Pardew will survive past Christmas even if we only pick up another 3 or 4 points in December. I think the crucial games will be the Norwich (a), Reading (h), Aston Villa (a) set in January with the window still open. If we were to lose all 3 or get only 1 point from Reading I think that might seal Pardew’s fate. I know it seems like an odd time but not taking points from those 3 games might actually put us in the relegation zone after an extremely difficult December.

      (Quote)

  35. No, there’s deffo a tactic.
    Summit like this.
” Right lads, hoof the ball up the park towards Ba/Cisse or Benny, then stand around with your thumbs up your arses and hope for a touch of magic from one of them.”
“if that doesn’t work, then start again as above”
    Cant fail.
If we are defending, then make sure you stand your ground and watch the other team get to the ball first. Dont panic, we have Krul to save the day.
If the other team scores first, dont worry about it. Just start again from the top..
    I’m a tactical genius, I’m Alan Pardew. 😳

      (Quote)

  36. BB I don’t think so. I think QPR, Reading, and Sunderland will remain below us. Not so sure about Southampton as they have been playing well lately, but at least those other 3. That would place us in 16th or 17th by the beginning of January.

      (Quote)

  37. Lads I don’t really know what it is but there is something not right and have been saying it from the start, I just can’t workout why the likes of Ranger didn’y bust a gut after all the ***** he has caused. I do still think that the players fitness has something to do with it as a few players are clearly slower ie Fergie, and a couple are carrying excess weight aswell Strolla and Jonas

      (Quote)

  38. With Chelsea (h) and Spurs (a) to follow that 3 game set things look very ominous for Pardew from my point of view. He must lift the side and have funds used to strengthen the side in January or we will be in the thick of it this season (and I don’t mean the thick of the Champions league race). Wake up Ash/Llam, this could be the last chance to re-establish credibility.

      (Quote)

  39. Kim – I kinda agree with that to a degree, but when plays get to PL level, most are Int players and all are paid handsomely – they really shouldn’t need someone breathing down their necks. That should be a bonus for the manager.

Boots @184 – that was kinda my point mate.
Regarding your 2nd comment. I think we’re going to struggle with the fixture we have this month, but I think teams like QPR, Reading, Saints, Wigan, Villa and the Scum will finish below us this season. I think well finish around 12-14th this season.
I agree to revisit this, but lets make it the beginning of Feb instead. There’s still a lot of the season left after 2nd Jan, and Feb will obviously allow us to see what we have in terms of players – new players or Ba and that.
I understand and share in your concern, but I just don’t see who we’d bring in to change things from the managers out of work at the mo, and I don’t see us folking out compo for a manager in work.

      (Quote)

  40. Big Dave there is a lot not right at the club. It was just papered over by the outstanding performances of a few players last season. Now it has all been exposed again. A lot of the youngsters are nowhere near ready or are always injured, sub-par performances from key starters, no support from the owner, extra games leading to more injuries, and an over-estimate by management about the skill levels of many of our stand-ins. That adds up to disaster and that’s what we’ve gotten this season.

      (Quote)

  41. Dave@194 .you are right ,something is defo amiss ,I think the players need to play to their strengths and at the moment it ain’t happening. Some of the players look utterly fed up at times and I never noticed that previously.

      (Quote)

  42. a couple of interesting fixtures this weekend too.

    wigan v qpr

      (Quote)

  43. BB , We don’t play until monday ,by then we’ll know what we need to do though obviously a win is a must anyway.

      (Quote)

  44. I would pick Southampton over Reading, Wigan over QPR, and Fulham to beat us BB. That would bring Southampton to 15 points and Wigan to 17 putting us closer to the R zone. Chelsea should beat the mackems and I’m not concerned they’re at home. 😀 Still just the beginning of a very tough run of games where I expect all but QPR of the bottom 8 to compress together even more around 17-25 points by New Years. There will be a real horse race in the new year around the 15th, 16th and 17th place positions that we will be in the thick of. Our only way out would be to win the 3 game set I talked about earlier.

      (Quote)

  45. G2 – I think there’s points to be had against QPR on the 22nd, but agree that if we 10 points from Jan then we will have done well like.
Pardew has came out and said he has the back of the board and that he expects a stronger squad by Feb. I would have thought that if either were not accurate, Lambastard would have wasted no time at all to come out and put the record straight.

G2 – if you think Pards won’t see out Xmas, who would you have replace him mate?

      (Quote)

  46. G2 – sorry mate, ignore that last question, I’ve just realized you wrote you think Pards will see beyond Xmas. I do too, infact I’d be amazed if they sack him before the end of the season.

      (Quote)

  47. G2 – you’ve got it. 😉
the other way out is for a freak result or two against city, manure or arsenil.
    fingers x’d eh 😕

      (Quote)

  48. Sharpy I think he will see out Christmas but the matches in January will be the key mate. As I’ve said the games against Norwich (a), Reading (h), Aston Villa (a) in Jan are the key. As for who we would bring in if we lost those 3 games I would imagine the list would be very short indeed. In fact Ashley might favour just sitting tight with Carver for the rest of the season. If not Carver I can only think it would have to be a crony of Ashley or a young manager (most likely from the Championship) willing to take a chance coming to us. No senior experienced manager worth his salt would want to come.

    @B&B

It must just be me. Cos I don’t get it.

If anyone feels so strongly about a manager and wants him to resign surely if he isn’t going to jump you must want him sacked.

I’ve told you my thoughts. I don’t think any manager who is willing to work under Ashley could do any better.

    He over achieved last year.

The quality of the squad looks *****.

Yes I would stick with him unless we look like relegation fodder.

You suggested better managers are out there. I don’t see it. Surely you must want him sacked so you could see a better mamager there?

      (Quote)

  50. would be typical of us to take 3 points from the city match then lose to QPR. Doh ❗

      (Quote)

  51. I haven’t heard much in the press from Llambias these days. What’s the matter Derek, cat got your tongue? 😈

      (Quote)

  52. I don’t think so BB mate. I think we might lose to Man City 4 or 5-0 and then get a draw or tight win against QPR. A draw would be a disaster at home but not impossible. This season just has a bad smell around it thanks to over-confidence from last season and poor judgement from the top.

      (Quote)

  53. I would think Ashley has already had several fairly unhappy conversations with both Pardew and Llambias this season. If he hasn’t then he’s even more deluded than I think he is. He should be demanding better from Pardew and the team but at the same time giving Llambias a thick ear for what he didn’t do last summer. It will clearly cost more to fix things with incoming now as they themselves have said repeatedly in the past. Forget the whole purple palaver and get on with it Ash/Llam.

      (Quote)

  54. G2 let owlheed keep his gob shut,he has no idea what hes on about when it comes to footy, last time he opened his gob was to brag how he stuck it up l/pool charging them intrest on a late payment, bloody **** heed thats all he thinks about “money”

  55. Pardew can only blather the blather after the weak performance against Bordeaux, because he knows his squad are not good enough and he needs to keep them motivated. However, HE is responsible for the team, and to be honest we have been garbage all season. HE is responsible for tactics and results, HE is also responsible for transfers, if he cannot get the players through the door then HE should be aware of the consequences.

We haven’t turned the corner by far, and come the end of January we will be right down there in the relegation dog fight. There are no easy games in this league, look how Southampton battered us last week …. shocking 👿 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  56. Dave – when you say that there is something up at the club, I think you’re right mate. This **** poor form seems to have hit the youth, reserves and 1st team which seems weird to me like.

BB – from those fixtures I see a Saints win or draw. QPR will beat Wigan (who have a lot of injuries and suspensions), City will beat Scum and if we can play as we did against Wigan and get Benny, Ba, Santon and Tiote back, then I think we could beat Fulham.

G2 – god I hope he doesn’t stick with Carver if Pardew goes. I’d be very surprised if he does after Hughton. I think he’d look to get someone like Hollier or if there aren’t many applicants it may be that he turns to Lee Clark.
I personally don’t see any manager out of work or who’ll be interested in the job doing so much better with what’s available to them.

    @Big Dave

I’m not so sure something is wrong in terms of attitude and morale. I just believe the quality of the squad is poor.

I’ve said it for years that the youth system only brings along a gem every 5 to 10 yrs.
They may generate many players who eventually move to lower leagues but if you want to rely on them to break into a European side then forget it.

That is what we seem to be moving towards.

      (Quote)

  58. We need to avoid defeat at Fulham at all costs. A draw would be a great result, we need to go there to defend the point, maybe we can then nick it with one of our strikers conjuring up some magic.
The centre of our defence worries me a bit to be honest, Collo hasn’t achieved the form of last season.

      (Quote)

  59. Troy, we have unearthed at least 3 gems in the last 3 years, Krul, Carroll and Forster is a fantastic return imo.

That is probably 60 million pounds worth of talent at todays prices.

If that’s the case, we can live with the fact that the rest are no good …. 🙂

      (Quote)

  60. Troy – I don’t get how you don’t get it, especially as I’m agreeing with your comment “Yes I would stick with him unless we look like relegation fodder.”

If Ashley sacks him, Pardew will be richly compensated. He will also claim that he has not been given a proper chance. I think he would be justified in saying so too, even though I think he is **** and I predict he isn’t cut out for it. He should be given as long as it takes so that we can safely say he has had every chance. He should then resign.

I am not calling for his head because it is only my prediction. I wish him well and hope he proves me wrong. I would prefer it if he resigned however. I cannot believe we can’t get anyone better in the whole world.

Ashley does not pick the team, sort out the tactics or get involved on the training ground. He has provided a decent enough squad for Pardew to work with. Pardew said he was happy with the squad. Our woeful performances and current plight are down to Pardew.

  61. Munich – the last thing we should do is go to Fulham to defend!!, we’ve done that far to often this season and got caught out because we have a poor defence. We have to go there to WIN, start positive and continue to press when we have the ball. Look at the Stoke game, we set up really defensively and tried to defend a 1-0 lead but aren’t good enough defensively to do that and ended up loosing.
Also, Pardew can’t be blamed for lack of signings mate, that’s Dekkas job.

Troy – I agree about the young uns. A couple look like canny squad players, but they are never gonna be regular first teamers and making us CL contenders. But in my opinion, most of them should be out on loan this season getting greater experience of first team football and fitness.

    I definitely don’t get it.

There is nothing wrong with an individual, like yourself, having a different view from most.

You clearly believe he is rubbish and want him to resign. But you will just go along with things and not call for him to be replaced?

I can only equate the situation to the time Souness was in charge. I felt as strongly about souey as you about Pardew.

But I couldn’t just sit there and not demand his sacking. He clearly wasn’t good enough and I believed better managers were out there and would be willing to join Newcastle.

As you know, I ended up confronting him face to face.

Why not go along with your instinct? You may have more foresight than us. Why wait until its too late?

That’s the way I operate, so that’s why I don’t follow your views and actions.

Just to add. I don’t believe for a second that Pardews contract will cost the club much to pay up.

We all know how Ashley works. He believes in low basic pay and high bonuses. I’m basing this on his workforce in sports direct.

  64. Troy

Would you say you are happy with the football we play ? or do you think we could get a manager that will work under the regime and deliver a better style of play?

    genuine question btw

I think there are managers all over the world that get their team playing better football with alot less money to work with.

  65. Troy – should i blag my way in by pretending to be someone important, order the man on the gate to move the cones, sneak in a side door, confidently strut the corridors, get pitch side, ask pards for a photo … then tell him to man up and do the honourable thing and resign …it worked for you, didn’t it?

  66. Troy let me expand on what I said not only do I believe there is something not right, I as you know have always said that the squad we have wasn’t good enough or anywhere near strong enough, and I firmly believe that the failure to strengthen has pissed a few players of, I have watched a few players that I know are capable of a far higher standard look as if there is something wrong Cisse is the main one, and Cabaye to me has looked as if he is completely disillusioned with the club, yeah I know he has had an operation which has give some an excuse to excuse his early season form because some have already made up their mind that that is why he hasn’t looked the same player, but I don’t buy that because he looked far better playing for France but with us he has looked like a different player.
So altogether I honestly believe that the team is suffering because of the lack of strengthening and there is something not right. Which just reminds me can you remember Wraith said that he was told about player unrest, but then people accused him of just **** stirring because he hated the Regime, well I don’t buy that and really can’t see why such a well known supporter would spread that **** and I believe what he said
