Game On! Bordeaux v Newcastle

Game On at Bordeaux
Newcastle conclude their Europa League group stage campaign this evening by visiting group leaders Bordeaux.

Only a win for United will be enough to ensure top spot for Alan Pardew and his side and anything else will mean that second place in the group will have to do.

In fairness the important thing is done and that is qualification for both sides. The only issue to decide is who will get the coveted seeded draw which will see the team that grabs first place be able to take advantage of a home game in the second leg of the next round. Naturally that might not be an advantage at all in the end and if you want to progress you need to beat what is in front of you anyway.

The big early team news in the supposed inclusion of Nile Ranger who will start a game for United for the first time in a very long time. His history aside, he has apparently been applying himself in training and doing the basics, such as turning up on time, right. He has a chance and now it’s up to him to take it.

The game is live on ESPN and is also being broadcast by a number of overseas TV channels so picking up a stream should be easy enough. Normal rules apply, those being that if you happen to come across a good stream then please post a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will hopefully be updated in full below as and when it becomes available. I say hopefully as I’ll be on my way to Amsterdam and may be caught in traffic so I’m hoping someone else will be about to keep an eye on things. If not keep an eye on the comments as team news will be posted by someone somewhere.

Howay the lads!

  1. Dave – I heard from a good source (ex-player) that a good few players (purples) wanted to be away in the summer because they had had their heads turned.

    @B&B

    I used my behaviour as an example. Not everyone can pull off my antics. It takes a mixture of passion, bottle, arrogance and a touch of stupidity.

    However, prior to doing that, I used to sing alone and shout for his sacking. I got many derogatory comments from those around me in the stands. But I regret none of it. I saw he wasn’t good enough and stood by my convictions.

    If he had been good enough, he wouldn’t have been sacked.

    For me, your actions and words don’t stand up to your beliefs. 😉

    @Alex

    We finished 5th last year. We’ve played 14 games. My thoughts are straight forward. Pardew deserves time. I don’t want him to resign. I don’t want him sacked.

    The simple reason. I don’t believe there is a manager out there that is willing to work under Ashley’s policies, who would do any better than Pardew. You can’t make a silk purse out of Jabba’s ear. 🙂

      (Quote)

  5. B+B yeah well Pards did say they had their heads turned, but I presume he managed to talk them into staying because we had done well and were heading in the right direction, But I would imagine seeing the Regimes ambitions in the summer window then finishing in the bottom half of the table will make the job almost impossible to convince then to stick with us next season, as we can hardly offer them much in terms of ambition.
    @ 227 so do you not think you could pull that off without getting arrested and banned 😀 maybe you just don’t have that Je ne sais quoi 😕 about you

      (Quote)

  6. B+B all joking aside if Pards had been backed as he should have and we were still as **** as we are now I would probably be more against him, but I do think the Regime have done fuk all to help him as they probably thought that we could pull another miracle off like last yr .
    But maybe this has been the shock they need

    @Big Dave

    I take your point and to a degree I agree. But i do believe Every football club will have some degree of unrest. Man City have a fantastic manager, wads of money but we all know Ballotelli is disruptive. Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool are the same.

    You never have harmony after a season or so after a new manager is appointed. Managers have favourites, clubs have petulant players, there’s only 11 starting places, etc.

    I certainly see small signs that issues are ongoing but no more than any other club.

    Moving on about the club itself –
    My thoughts are, Pardew is not a top manager. I believe he coerces with the regime. Yes there are issues, but Pards is the perfect foil for this regime. It’s the regime that is the problem.

    I’ve always stated we need a balance between Shepherds reign and the current regime.

    Somewhere in the middle is what we need and until this regime realises this then we will never be satisfied with the quality of the manager, the team or the board.

  8. Had to step away for a while. Enjoying all your comments lads. A lot of sense being made compared with what comes from our fearless leaders at the club. There is no ready replacement for Pardew but he must keep us out of the relegation zone. Hughton got sacked for far less if I recall. He had us playing well and were’nt we in 11th place when he got the sack? So what is the bottom line for Pardew at this stage with a supposedly far deeper squad after we spent the Carroll money building up for Europe? That’s right isn’t it? We did strengthen proplerly didn’t we Derek?

    What do you think? Should he resign? Be sacked? Are there better managers out there who will work for Ashley and his ‘balancing the books’ policy?

  11. Troy I know what your saying about all clubs have a bit of **** that goes on I just feel we have more **** going on, but I agree about Pards under the Regime, for me there is only 2 that could work under them and their plans and thats Pards and JFK and I just couldn’t hack JFK so we have to stick with Pards

      (Quote)

  12. No I agree with you as far as sacking goes Troy. Sacking him would solve nothing. And as long as we stay above the relegation zone by at least a few points I think he is safe. There is no decent manager who would come to us right now and work for the two clever lads. But the next 2 months are crucial for Pardew. If we sink lower the two clever lads will do something to save the pot of gold coming next season from the new TV contract. Who they would bring in I would have no idea. Not Shearer or Keegan or Joe Kinnear I wouldn’t think but there is probably someone desperate enough to come in (probably someone out of work with some kind of experience in the Prem).

      (Quote)

  13. How about Alan Curbishley Troy? He’s a poor enough manager who is desperate and out of work and would accept a poor wage surely? That’s ideal for the 2 clever lads. :mrgreen:

    @G2 & BD

    Have you been following the debate myself and B&B have been having?

    I’m lost how B&B can dislike Pardew so much, thinks he is useless, can’t take us any further, predicts he will eventually be sacked, likely in line with the career average of 2.13 seasons in charge, (within a few weeks), hopes he resigns BUT doesn’t want him sacked now despite him believing their are plenty of better managers out there who would be willing to work under Ashley & Del Boy and within our price range.

    I’m lost why he wont say he wants him sacked now. His reasons given are it would cost too much compen to pay him off (no evidence of that) and he should be given time to prove him wrong.

    Is it me or do you’s understand his reasoning?

    I have gave my reasons why I want him to stay. If I believed there were better managers out there who we could attract then I would shout for his resignation.

    What do people think?

      (Quote)

  15. I think I’ve said my piece about Pardew Troy. He’s an average manager working for a pair of idiots. He doesn’t deserve the sack immediately but must get better performances out of the team in the next 10-15 games and keep us out of the drop zone. If he doesn’t at least do that all bets are off. I still think the most likely series of events is:we keep Pardew into the January window and bring in a couple of players. Then it is up to Pardew. If we continue to slide downwards he will probably be gone in February.

      (Quote)

  16. Troy TBH I thought B+B basically said a week or so back that he was calling for Pards to be sacked, but I must have got it wrong 😕 .
    Just thinking more about it but the Regime have got us where they wanted us in that we can’t really call for the manager to go because we’ll probably not get anyone else, so they can get away with doing whatever they want.
    But I do think Jan is going to be a big window for Pards because he simply has to get the Regime to back him or he will need to come out and tell the fans that they won’t back him, and he can’t take them where they want to go without backing.

      (Quote)

  17. Troy – you said “My thoughts are straight forward. Pardew deserves time. I don’t want him to resign. I don’t want him sacked”
    Fair ’nuff, but what I want to know is, given the time you say he deserves, what do you think he can achieve?
    Because I think that given time, he may well manage to make this club the mid table mediocrity the regime will be happy with.
    I take it you would be happy with that too.
    Its crystal clear to me that Pardew doesn’t have the where with all, to take us anywhere near the lofty heights of the CL.
    Neither would the regime back him if he did. 👿
    We may get lucky with a cup run, but I doubt it.
    Unfortunately I cant see things changing while the money continues to roll in. So we better all get used to it.

  18. The Pot of Gold means too much to Ashley to let us sit in 16th or 17th place for long. How he would deal with bringing in a new manager I have no idea but I would bet he is already making contingency plans. He knows he can’t hire a real first-class manager because he could never support him well enough and has no clear idea about football himself so he needs a lackey like Llambias nearby to stroke his ego. That doesn’t leave us much room to maneuver does it? What good is a billionaire owner who hasn’t got a clue about football and won’t hire people who do?

    @BD

    I thought B&B wanted him sacked now by the comments he made last week, but when I challenged him about it, he told me he had never said such a thing.

    I reviewed his posts and to be fair, despite him saying everything but those particular words it did fool me as well. 😕

    That reminds me, I must watch question time on catch up TV. 😆

      (Quote)

  20. To put it another way Ashley would love to find a first class manager who would work for peanuts, be a lackey like Llambias, but run the club like a genius and who could get us in Champions League ever year without spending a penny. That’s not too much to ask is it???

    @Bootsy

    This sometimes gets a bit tedious. Do you read my posts? 🙄

    How many times have I said that is all you should expect with this regime? No matter who the manager is. I don’t want that, I don’t rate Pardew as a top manager. I just don’t see any better manager willing to work under Ashley.

    Last season blew me out the water. But, we are now seeing the results of qualifying for Europe with a small squad.

    I’ve said this a thousand times Bootsy. Please follow. 😉

      (Quote)

  24. so you kind of contradict yourself then.
    You dont want him to resign, you dont want him sacked and you dont want mid table mediocrity.
    so what exactly DO you want. ❓
    you have obviously already said, but I wasn’t keeping up as per usual 😳
    please refresh my memory 😉

  25. Troy – from what I’m reading B&B is basically agreeing with you that Pardew shouldn’t be sacked, but if Pardew decided to walk he wouldn’t be disappointed. At least that’s how I read it.

    Personally, I think Roberto Martinez could easily operate under these half wits. He already works for a sportswear owner who’s full of **** and has never really handed him a wad of cash for players. But, DW would never allow him to come to us or Ashley in particular.

    I agree with those that say Ashley and Dekka are the problem at the club. For me, Ashley is too busy trying to sponsor Rangers and buying bloody JJB sports to be fully focused on what NUFC need.

    @Sharpey

    I know what B&B is saying. But I’m questioning his reasoning.

      (Quote)

  28. I think the regime actually were quite realistic until last season. They thought we could compete in the top half of the table. They had plans for some spending and slow improvement of the youth system. Then last season happened. Ash/Llam thought they had underestimated their own brilliance as well as Pardew’s. They decided to sell a few players like Peter, Best, and Forster and didn’t really think we needed strengthening. So they brought in a couple of youngsters and Anita. We already had a brilliant first team, plenty of cover (well not really but why not kid yourself?) and they had brought the wage bill down significantly. Now we would cruise alone finishing 4th, 5th or 6th for several seasons, play in Europe and Ashley would get rich. What could possibly go wrong???

      (Quote)

  29. Ha ha. nice one. What you mean is you dont have an answer.

    Martinez has not achieved anything?

    He lost 8 games on the trot and were rooted to the bottom of the league last season.
    They ended up 15th!

    His win rate is 27% with Wigan. Pards is 38%.

      (Quote)

  32. G2 – exactly. The worst thing that could have happened was finishing 5th last season. 8th would have been perfect. A slight improvement from previous seasons, but not requiring any significant investment in players.
    Like you say, they underestimated their own brilliance. Muppets.

    Like you say, they underestimated their own brilliance. Muppets.

    No. The best thing that could have happened was we finished 5th and then the regime used the high placing as a means of encouraging quality players to join us.

    That’s why I want the regime to change their policies or get out.

      (Quote)

  35. G2 – I think the board were about 4-5 players away from being on track from last season to this one, and the sad thing is that those players could have really been pick up from the free transfer market and probably cost what there ready to spend on LDJ and Debuchy.

      (Quote)

  36. IMO a Regime change or a total change in it’s ambitions and plans, is the only thing that will make a difference as getting rid of Pards won’t change the Regime, and it will be just the same **** with a different manager 😈 I really can’t see any other solution to the problem ❓ ❓

      (Quote)

  37. Fifth was only a bad thing because it allowed Ashley and Llambias to pat themselves on the back and tell each other what geniuses they are. With a decent owner we would have immediately strengthened for Europe knowing full-well the TV money is going to pour in next season. Instead we did nothing and now are paying for it. It exposes the regime as it deserves to be exposed. The emperor has no clothes and he doesn’t like it (everything seems to shrivel up in the cold doesn’t it Ash)?

  39. Troy – I understand what you’re saying about Martinez but I’d question how much that is down to him and how much that is down to having no players. His teams are always well drilled and well organized and they never seem to throw the towel in. He’s done brilliant to avoid relegation so many times and I think with a better team his % would increase dramatically.

      (Quote)

  40. You might be quite right Sharpy. At the least we could have showed ambition and brought 2 players in even if it wasn’t Debuchy and De Jong. We must surely have had other targets picked by Carr who would have been less expensive? Of course we did but we were being brilliant by spending nothing weren’t we Derek?

    I see nothing to get excited about with Martinez.
    Just my opinion based on his results. There have been many managers with the same budget as Martinez who have finished higher in the league.

    I don’t see the attraction. Over rated IMO

      (Quote)

  42. Troy – MANY managers with the same budget who have finished higher?! … I’d be interested who they all are?
    I’m not suggesting he’s the answer to our problems mate, but credit where’s its due IMO.
    Just to be clear tho, I said Martinez coz of the sportswear owner only – like I said, I’m not suggesting he’s the man I necessarily want to see come in if Pards goes.

      (Quote)

  43. It would be hard to comment about Martinez unless he gets a position with a club with money and real ambition. With Ashley around that won’t be us. And it might be a risky experiment although my own feeling is he will end up with a better record than Pardew if he gets the right working conditions.

    Lee Ryder got it spot on when he said the general feeling amongst the fans was a deep disappointment at the lack of effort in Bordeaux, would’nt you think the clubs staff and players would take notice of that and instead of giving interviews where they ignore the Elephant in the room, they should be more aware that a lot of the fans want improved performances not out of touch and ill advised comments.

  66. Robert@292 – I think you’re confusing the journo’s position with the player’s. Shola’s only specific mentions of the young players are to their inexperience and disappointment in the result. He speaks of a bad team performance, seemingly including himself, “That’s what great about the games coming thick and fast, you can quickly put the last bad one behind you.”

  69. Let’s make no bones about it, we have been really poor this season. In europe we have struggled against reserve teams from average / poor teams playing in average / poor leagues. Pardew is absolutely delusional when he thinks we can simply turn the switch and start producing good football, when so far this season there has been absolutely no sign of that happening.

    He needs to get it sorted out now, and shouldn’t be trying to lull everyone into believeing things are going ok.

    Big Dave is right in my opinion, Pardew has lost certain players in the dressing room… they are not all up for the fight… 👿

  70. • Fulham have lost only one of their last six Premier League matches against Newcastle and won all of the last three at Craven Cottage

    • Fulham substitutes have contributed seven goals this term – only Manchester City’s have been as productive

    • Demba Ba has become the first Newcastle player to score more than 10 goals in consecutive Premier League seasons since Alan Shearer did so nine years ago

    • Martin Jol’s side have gone seven games without a league win – their worst spell within a single season since December 2010
