Away day hoodoo continues! Fulham 2-1 Newcastle

You know when you’ve been Hugo’d
Newcastle tasted defeat for a fifth time in six Premier League outings as a Fulham side fired by former Magpie Damien Duff dispatched United at Craven Cottage.

No defeat is good, but at least we once again showed improvement in terms of performance and actually looked threatening in attack with Hatem Ben Arfa causing the most problems for Fulham before his planned withdrawal due to lack of training on 65 minutes.

However ultimately it was mistakes in defence which cost us the game once more and it’s those mistakes that need to be eradicated if we are to start picking up the points required to drag us away from the relegation zone. I’m not worried yet, but with a tough run of fixtures to come there is a sense of danger around St James’ Park although if our performances match the level we saw at the start of the second half we’ll be fine and will avoid being drawn into a relegation battle.

The hosts started off brightly applying pressure and looking dangerous. Danny Simpson had to be on hand to clear an early cross whilst Alex Kacaniklic had tentative claims for an early penalty waved away by Lee Mason.

Another slow start proved costly in the 19th minute when Damien Duff played in Steve Sidwell who saw his shot at goal deflected past Tim Krul and into the back of the net via Mike Williamson and the crossbar. Krul would have saved it comfortably but such is the way things are going for us at the moment it proved costly and Fulham grabbed a deserved lead.

It could have been worse minutes later when Cheik Tiote gifted possession to Fulham forcing Tim Krul into a smart save from Dimitar Berbatov. It was one of a number of occasions where Tiote gave the ball away in dangerous areas by simply just not looking at what he was doing.

However United did start to offer a threat themselves as the half went on. Fabricio Coloccini saw his well worked header from a Hatem Ben Arfa corner cleared off the line by Sascha Riether before Demba Ba saw himself denied by the same player on the line after Mark Schwarzer flapped at a cross.

Half-time: Fulham 1-0 Newcastle

The threat intensified after the break as United turned the screws. With Hatem Ben Arfa proving ever more purposeful the away side had the bulk of the possession but were unable to find that killer ball. That was until the 54th minute when Ben Arfa unleashed a shot at goal which took a slight deflection off John Arne Riise before wildly dipping in off Mark Scwarzer’s crossbar to level the scores.

Further chances followed for Demba Ba, Vurnon Anita and Papiss Cisse and at this point it looked as though the away side might actually end a run of failing to win away from home.

However Fulham still offered a threat on the break and Hugo Rodallega could have put the hosts ahead once more but was unable to capitalise after breaking from the halfway line. However the former Wigan man wasn’t to be denied and after a needless foul was given away on the corner of our penalty area Rodallega found himself unmarked at the near post and in an ideal position to nod home Damien Duff’s cross. Two assists for Duff on the night, which equal the two he had for us during his entire spell at United.

Papiss Cisse hit the post, albeit from an offside position, while Fabricio Coloccini was unlucky not to restore parity after cutting in from the left and seeing his curling effort bounce back off the frame of the goal and while United continued to press they were unable to take advantage and couldn’t really muster anything but weak shots at Schwarzer’s goal.

At the other end Fulham could have extended the lead as Newcastle committed men forward but they were unable to capitalise and the closest they went was through substitute Mladen Petric who struck the frame of the United goal with a fierce effort.

Full-time: Fulham 2-1 Newcastle

I’ll probably get slated for saying this (I’m used to it by the way) but I was quite happy with the performance last night. It was another improvement after recent improvements against Stoke and Wigan and we certainly offered more threat going forward which I believe was one complaint voiced by a lot of fans not so long back?

We tried a different formation again, which was another complaint I recall from some fans, and apart from a slow start we played well enough to deserve at least a point in my view.

Thing is what you get and what you deserve can be completely different in football. If we are to start robbing points again we need to sort out our defensive side. How many goals in recent weeks have been because of defensive howlers? I don’t mean who made the last howler as quite often that player is trying to cover for another loose pass/loss of possession by another player. I mean as a unit we need to be more solid.

Manchester City at home next this Saturday. Not a good place to start either…

  1. BB sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
I would prefer to keep Ba if he was.going to be a time player, but imo he is only interested in himself and not the team, and I don’t think anyone is bigger than the team, and I think Pards has made a massive **** up in giving Ba assurances, as it causes all sorts of shitewhen one member of a team get treated different and better than other team mates.

      (Quote)

  2. Meant to add that imo that has knocked the heart out of Cisse and has made him loss confidence but I honestly believe if Ba does go Cisse well come good again when regularly played in the No9 position (roll).
Rigght back to do a bit, catch you’s later.

      (Quote)

  3. I want Ba to stay, but not when he is demanding so much money. What other club has the club captain as a lower earner? Collo would then have to be signed onto a new deal, and then it would continue. I think we need to remember where we are, and we have been relegated 2 seasons ago. We cant afford the massive wages that got us into a massive mess.
I think we need to continue the path we are on. We can get some other great players that fit into what we are trying to do. How much was Long at WBA? They are out there. Ba’s knee is a timebomb and knowing our luck he will sign a new 85k a week deal, and then go crock on Feb 2nd. We cant afford to have that happen. Viduka, Owen anyone?

      (Quote)

  4. BB/Dave – do you think many clubs will come in for Ba if its gonna cost the kind of money Boots earlier post suggested? genuine question, coz I think that kind of money is going to put must people off!, hence most of the talk is about Walcott moving rather than Ba at what would be less money fee wise I’d have thought.

      (Quote)

  5. Then its perfect of the club to have the stance they have. Ba will realise he cant demand so much. I think Walcott is over-rated imho but there you go.

    Would anyone take Bent?

      (Quote)

  6. Ice & BD thanks for yous replies.
Its a tricky dilema for sure.
Pardew needs to grow some plums and get it sorted. One way or another.

      (Quote)

  7. Im not sure if theres anyone in the clubs below us who I would like to see at the toon. I think maybe di santo or stam at wigan are decent but not sure on others

      (Quote)

  8. BB – I don’t see any of them taking Ba like, and if you open it up to European clubs – again, I can’t really think of any that Ba would want to leave for over us.

I watched some of the highlights for the Arsenal v Bradford game and I’m so pleased we didn’t waste our money on Gervinho like – he’s **** poor 😯

      (Quote)

  9. Sharpy-You’d think in our position we wouldn’t have much interest in other clubs or even be able to laugh at them. But when I saw his miss from 2 yards out in front of that open goal I was in tears 😀

      (Quote)

  10. Newkie – unbelievable 😯 poor Wenger must be pulling his hair out!. Can’t believe people questioning him as a manager when his players are missing sitters like that like?!
I could understand it if he had put aload of untried kids out there but the teams was really strong and tactics spot on from what I saw.

      (Quote)

  11. yeah sharpy, we deffo dodged a bullet there 😆
But the other lad, Giroud, i do like the look of him.
I doubt we were even interested in him. But he was available.
so much for our great scouting network in europe.

      (Quote)

  12. Yeah, he was known to all because he was Ligue 1’s top scorer. We’re attempting to get people under the radar-which is the right approach, but they have to have talent as well

      (Quote)

  13. BB/SHARPY as i said a while ago it would take a big club to take ba,
    30mill
    buy-out 7mil
    80thou x 4yr contract
his agent have said they want 5mil to do deal
which club will risk that sort of money with no insurance cover, very very few imo

      (Quote)

  14. Raffo – from the teams below us, I’d take Lallana from Saints, Benteke and Bent from Villa, Kone and Gomez from Wigan, Hoilett and Taarabt from QPR, and Johnson and Fletcher from the scum.
I not necassarily saying they would be in my strongest toon team but they would certain strengthen our squad and would defo have played a big part in our season so far had we had any of them.

      (Quote)

  15. Sharpy17 @149 if Carr has given him a look and is satisfied I would think that would make him a good prospect for us. Shola has had it and we gave him another 2 years on his contract. Another huge mistake because Pardew likes him. Now everyone is calculating how much it would cost to take on Ba over 4 years and it sounds like a lot with his knees so it depends on insurance coverage for him. If he stays fit it isn’t a lot at all because it is amortized over the length of the contract. Look how much we have paid Xisco over his 5 year contract for nothing at all! I could see several clubs willing to take the risk now that he has stayed healthy for us for a season and a half.

      (Quote)

  16. G2 i see your point but because of “fig”@167 and hes 27 coming up 28 i dont see it,yes a right pigs ear over xisco but was a lot younger to be fair
and you know how insurance company work now which wasnt a problem i see it as a big problem in the case of ba,toon got him on a free plus agents fee so it wasnt such a problem,it is if its going to cost some club 30mil plus he not worth 30mil fit imo

      (Quote)

  17. Ok Sharpy and icedog it isn’t worth arguing about as we will find out in January. He clearly has been someone teams worried about for fitness as with Stoke before we signed him. But look at Stoke now!! 😆 They signed Owen and so far he has played 51 minutes for them!! They thought Ba was too big a risk but then turned around and signed Owen. Abslolutely hilarious. I guess Llambias is not the only clown in English football.

      (Quote)

  18. Ice – I agree, you pay £30 for a mid 20’s CF, not one who’s approaching 30 and has this issue with his knee. The older he gets the more prone he’s going to be to silly little injuries and I understand he’s played loads last season and this without the knee causing him problems, but what impact has that had on his knee?!. Also, although it isn’t an issue this season, he’s still an ACoNs player so will miss parts of the season through that.
Ill be very surprised if there is a rush on for him TBH coz if clubs wanted him, they could have had him for the same small fee in the summer and there wasn’t much genuine interest then from memory.

      (Quote)

  19. G2 i would never argue with you mate,we normally are on the same wave length, its just a very strange how-do- you do,and every club have a diff view-point,ours with owlheed is *****

      (Quote)

  20. I feel the same icedog. Together with Big Dave I think our criticism of the owner and owlheed has been fair based on the performances this season and the lack of strengthening in the summer. What is actually happening within the squad is hard to say but we have seen the results of the lack of an improved squad on the pitch and in the league table. I think there still remains a lot for Pardew to prove as well. I’m beginning to notice a big similarity between Pardew hoofball and Allardyce hoofball when he was here. I hope this is only temporary because players like Willo have to resort to it quite often to get out of trouble in their own end. But if we get better players in and it continues it might mean Pardew has run out of ideas.

      (Quote)

  21. imo signing any player for whatever the price is a risk but thats the name of the game, its just when the medical guys say he has a problem insurance companys wont touch you,so if some club wants to risk 30mil good luck to them

      (Quote)

  22. G2 your spot on re-willo,what i cannot get my head round is and i quote pardew,as last season drew to a close “mike” wants to know when we are going to buy a c/h,so who the hell is telling the truth at our club it beats me 😐

      (Quote)

  23. surely it just comes down to adding a get out clause for the club if his knee breaks down. Or is that too simple. Why would the club then need a medical insurance ?
I must be missing something. 😕

      (Quote)

  24. ice – I think the cash was there to buy a CB, but lambastad the clown blew the deal by trying to be too cute for his own good.
His failure to sign the necessary playing staff for Pardew should be rewarded with the sack.
    I hate the **** 👿

      (Quote)

  25. That statement is baffling icedog. What happened between then and the end of the last window? They underbid on a couple of players (or were faced with teams raising their valuations based mostly on our interest), then clapped themselves on the backs thinking Willo was going to be great as a stand-in if Saylor went down again (as he always does). But how does that look now? And what about that CB with a knack for scoring from set pieces? Does it look like Willo can do that? This whole thing is the key to understanding Ashley. Get more for less. Get huge performances from sub-par players like Willo and everything is fine. But it is never going to be a long-term strategy that will work. The same holds for Simpson and Shola. They should have been gone last season or at least no extensions for Willo and Shola. Now we are paying the price for the owner’s stupidity.

      (Quote)

  26. whats that owl called in “clash of the titans” ?
    something like Booboo.
anyway quite apt for lambastad, except he isnt very wise.
    😆

      (Quote)

  27. G2 the problem is there for all to see, jabba knows sweet fa about footy so handed things over to someone who know even less, thing is where do we go from here, unless jabba kicks owlheed out bloody no where imo,in the past we bought players by going into debt which is no good to anyone, but the club is making money re tv cash ect which goes up to 40/50 next season

      (Quote)

  28. It’s not too late for Ashley to turn things around again. But it will involve spending some money. It will have to involve several talented players coming in who will have to be paid fairly. The contract extensions for Shola, Willo and even Jonas were a huge mistake that will cost us for years to come. If Ashley digs in his heels and tells Pardew he has to sell in order to buy then we won’t improve enough to rise into the top half of the table. Will that satisfy most of the supporters when we finished fifth last season? I suppose it will satisfy some but it will get us no closer to winning anything.

      (Quote)

  29. G2 – I’d have far better things to argue about mate, but I thing you’re right, Jan is going to be an interesting month.

Boots – I get the feeling that Ba is only out to feather his nest, so if a club offered him a contract with a get out clause – he simply wouldn’t sign it, and stays put at the toon.

      (Quote)

  30. theres a few things you can put your finger on,the ba/cissie saga, taylor missing from the back (which is normal at some point) tiote is not half the player he was last season and cabby not being fully fit and playing with a groin problem,so we have gone from having one of the best defences in the pl to a set of panic and hoof ball

      (Quote)

  31. All in all we need a huge improvement in form Sharpy and icedog. But will it come? I have a horrible feeling Arsenal will come in with a bid for Ben Arfa as they are looking pretty ragged right now. If we sell it will be a disaster. Worse than if Ba leaves imo. As far as creativity goes we have very little in the side other than Ben Arfa and the Cabaye of last season. Ba can finish if he gets decent service and I think Cisse might be able to as well but not without someone like Ben Arfa in the team. If we lose players we could get relegated. Finishing 18th is not out of the question the way the team looks right now and with 3 horrible games to play in December (I’m not even counting Everton).

      (Quote)

  32. You’ve summarized it perfectly icedog @185. We have won 1 of our last 6 and we may only win 1 of our next 5. That would be 6 points out of 33. That is relegation form plain and simple. Then we have the window and 3 games against teams we must beat: Norwich, Reading and Aston Villa or we will be in the relegation zone. Then what? End of January, window closed and do we keep going with Pardew or sack him? A very tough period ahead for us I’m afraid.

      (Quote)

  33. G2 ime not looking forward one bit to the next few games i wish it was over if ime honest after quite a few yrs i should be used to it,but because we were so close to having a good team at the end of the season a bit investment in the summer we could have moved forward, now we are going backwards its sad 🙁

      (Quote)

  34. Is it possible that we could be playing away at Arsenal in the last game of the season with relegation hanging in the balance? I hate to say it, and it is still fairly early, but with the attitude of our owner and managing director there is some significant possibility that we will be in that position.

      (Quote)

  35. It’s not likely KK given the teams Sunderland and to some extent Aston Villa are playing. The Norwich v Wigan game will be interesting. I could see us in 16th after the Saturday games. The slope is very slippery isn’t it?

      (Quote)

  36. G2 – I’m of the opinion Pardew wont be sacked regardless of how we end the season. He will be here for the long haul, even if the worst were to happen.
Trouble is I dont think we would bounce straight back up again like we did before.
Thats why I am so worried now.
Pardew cant cope with 38 matches and a few europa matches now, gawd knows how he would cope with the championship schedule.

      (Quote)

  37. also southampton dont play and villa have cesspool.
wigan play norwich which should be interesting tho

      (Quote)

  38. mind you the scum are on their longest winning streak of the season, so anything could happen. 😆

      (Quote)

  39. BB are you sure? Given the fact that the TV money is much bigger next season that would be madness from Ashley I would think. If there is one thing Ashley cares about it’s money and there is no profit in the Championship. I think if we even lose 2 of the 3 games in January that I spoke about he will be gone and we will be in the relegation zone. It will be a tough one for Ashley but he will bite the bullet and bring in a new manager before it is too late. Who would it be? No way of saying but definitely someone out of work who is willing to take a risk.

      (Quote)

  40. Hope we’re prepared for a horror show in January if some players don’t come in. But other clubs can look at the table as well and will see we are desperate so they will raise their prices. Then Llambias will panic and run away. No strengthening unless we sell. Then it isn’t really strengthening is it? We would have to sell someone vital to get decent money and given our form this season even a good incoming player might not have much of an effect. We are in a horrible position now compared with last summer thanks to Ash/Llam. Take a bow clever lads.

      (Quote)

  41. you could be right G2 but bringing in a new manager is no guarantee of survival either.
plus the cost of paying off pardew and his useless coaching staff would likely be very high too.
I dont know what the clauses in their contracts are, but maybe they can go if we get relegated or something. I cant see it happening before the end of the season tho. He will be given time to turn things around, with some new players too I would imagine (hope 😕 )

      (Quote)

  42. BB thats sound 😉 dave you do make me laugh with your fishing rod red hat green jacket and blue trousers ,now sit back down on your stone 😆

      (Quote)

  43. Aye BB it’s no guarantee but if we continue to flounder with Pardew I think it will happen. Ashley will bite the bullet on the contracts because he will have to in order to save the season. If he doesn’t save the season he loses all credibility given the fact we finished 5th last season and he loses tens of millions of pounds because of the new TV contract. It would in effect be another starting over with many players leaving if we got relegated. The attendances would drop and Ashley’s chance to recover his entire investment would be lost. The stakes couldn’t be higher so Pardew had better get it right in January.

      (Quote)

  44. Batts 😆 😆
G2 maybe it would take relegation again to finally get rid of the Regime, But without doubt Jabba would need to be real thick to not see now that he needs to back the manager with real money to strengthen the team, but maybe he has left it to late. ❓

      (Quote)

  45. Well I don’t know much about this guy we are linked with but he seems to be a second striker that could play up front with a quicker striker. He could play with Cisse and create chances for him. Ba just seems to be all for himself. I agree with some of the comments about Ba. I’ve said before in the past, if you look at his career history, he will go to a bigger club for more wages as soon as possible IMO. Plus he and his ‘representatives’ get a large chunk of the £7M, we don’t actually get that much for him at all. What I read into that is.. it is IN HIS INTERESTS to move, as much as possible. He will go to a club that accepts his demands, just like we had to and the club before, and the club before that. 😕

      (Quote)

  46. Big Dave that would be a shocker to all of us. We have the resources to stay up compared with a lot of the teams around us but this is a real test of the owner. I think that’s a good thing mate. He needs to be pressured to spend and now there is definitely pressure. To be within 2 points of the relegation zone at this time of year should be a real slap in the face for the 2 clever lads. Let’s see what they come up with. It’s too bad that we can’t afford to laugh at their efforts. I don’t want another season in the Championship but it wouldn’t stop me supporting the club. I would hope it would be the end of the Ashley era though.

      (Quote)

  47. but his demands are getting bigger, and there is no guarantee that they will be met by any other clubs. He is playing a dodgy game if that is the case.
It was noticeable that no other team showed any interest in the summer.Despite Pardew and others putting him in the shop window.
If we have another player lined up it may be that NUFC want him to go especially as he has refused to sign a new improved contract.
The dufus twins dont like being dictated to by players, as we have seen before. They will happily take a loss on a player if it suits them to.
After all it comes out of the clubs finances, not ashleys own pocket.

      (Quote)

  48. The dufus twins are playing a dangerous game with the club. I agree we shouldn’t let Ba hold us to ransom, I’m just worried about who we might get to replace him. If Ben Arfa can’t get Cisse going who will be able to? I know we’ve used Ben Arfa on the wing a lot and another striker should be able to play closer to Cisse but he looks so damned clumsy this season. Can we really build our attack around him? If he continues to look like a shop dummy what is the backup plan? Shola is mostly useless, Ranger could take another season to develop or fall back into his gangsta ways. We have royally screwed up, or the 2 clever lads have. We are almost as bad at the back now. We generally manage 1 goal a game and let in 2. That could lead to a fairly bad goal difference by the end of the season. Cisse must begin to score if he gets some service.

      (Quote)

  49. Got to agree would be more devastated at losing Benny than Ba tbh. Christ we’d be really in the **** if he went . 🙄 🙁

      (Quote)

  50. Ben Arfa is the top dribbler in the Prem. There’s a link to it somewhere. Suarez is second. Amazing skill on the ball. If we lose him it might be the last nail in the coffin for this season Kimtoon.

      (Quote)

  51. BB I reckon someone would want him, eg. L’pool are absolutely desperate for a striker in Jan and £7M and £80-100K a week in wages is nowt for them. Your correct, his demands will go up, but also his stock has risen and as one of the prems top scorers, he is in a position to make demands.

      (Quote)

  52. G2 ,I will be so upset if he gets sold ,that would show a total lack of ambition by the owner. They can dress it up with ,oh we can buy 2 or 3 with the cash like with the Carroll deal but players like Benny are few and they can’t be replaced on the cheap imo.

      (Quote)

  53. true DJG true.
    Good points about Benny too.
I could see Arsenal sticking in a cheeky bid.
    Not good all this really.
And it all falls back onto the lack of investment at the right time.
lambastad can blame nobody but himself for this mess.
You reap what you sow n all that, but the real losers are us the fans.

      (Quote)

  54. Pardews ‘we can be challenging the top 4’ looks rather silly right now.
Then again he has spouted a lot of tripe in the last 2 years.

If we are to have any chance of staying up then its vital Ba stays and we put the best formation round him to suit his style.

Due to Cisse’s long term drop in form then he will have to fit in wherever best but if that means playing second fiddle then needs must.

You simply don’t sell your best goal scorer when your team is plummeting.
