Is just one player going to be enough?

Remy speculation increases, but would he be enough?
Remy speculation increases, but would he be enough?
So I see Alan Pardew has been talking about transfers and has suggested we are “definitely” going to add one player to the squad.

It is unfortunately that time of year again. Mince Pies and transfer speculation as Christmas lurks around the corner, followed by a new year and then a new transfer window.

These days I hardly pay any notice to transfer speculation which some of you longer term readers may have cottoned on to. I used to get excited about them and show interest with every new player we were linked with by writing an article or two on each of them. Now though I just can’t be arsed with them as, aside from maybe one or two exceptions, the transfer window tends to end in disappointment and anger.

So the point of this article then? Well I guess to get to the point we have to look at what Alan Pardew has been saying first and foremost.

“It is a difficult window, but I think we would like to get – definitely – one player in and not lose anybody. It could be that we lose a player, you never know,” Pardew told the Chronicle.

“Obviously I lost Andy Carroll in this window and in a situation that wasn’t too dissimilar to what I’m in now two years ago, maybe it was a bit better. But if that is the case then we need two players, and if we lose two then we need three.”

He added: “Myself, Mike and Derek all agree that we should have brought one more senior player in here. For whatever reason it didn’t happen. And we have learnt from that lesson, and that’s what comes from the luxury which is the security of the owner. The owner has great faith in my ability and I have to reward that with what I think when we make an error, and say we have made a mistake.”

Well first off I guess it’s nice to see that they agree with the vast majority of fans who also thought it was a mistake not to strengthen further in the summer. It doesn’t change anything now though…

What can change though is January, and the fairly staunch promise that our numbers will be swelled by one regardless. Will it happen? Won’t it happen? I don’t know but I could probably make an educated guess!

The strongest train of speculation seems to suggest a move for Loic Remy could be on the cards. He’d be a good signing no doubt providing he can settle, but if we are assuming he is the one player then is it enough?

There are areas of our team which need strengthening and up front is one of them, but it’s the defence that I believe we should be looking to add to. Quite frankly it’s been shocking and the players who play at the back who have shall we say, limitations, are causing a lot of our problems.

Like Danny Simpson and Mike Williamson for example. I’ve said many times that I don’t think they are as bad as some make out and if you look at just defending then they are, at the very worst, decent players to have in the squad.

However a lot of this “long ball” thingybob that everyone seems to have latched on to has a lot to do with them pair. They just aren’t comfortable on the ball so the only two options you get from them whilst they have possession is a hopeful kick up field or a pass back to Tim Krul who will do much the same.

Anyway I’m in danger of having a rantso I’ll end it here…

Is adding just one player going to be enough? Is adding an attacker rather than a defender the right thing to do?

  1. One player may be enough to avoid relegation, is this what the fans deserve. We have the 3rd highest attendance in the EPL we deserve to be in the top 5. While we have a management saying we can not compete with the big clubs it is time they relised we are a big club held back by a management that thinks small. While the ground is filled to near capacity our management will only care that we stay in the EPL We can not get many more fans in the ground so there is not much to be gained by spending a lot of money on players.
Big club but thinking small they do not have the same hopes or expectations that the fans have.

come on ash put egg on our faces go out and buy a bucket load

  3. Unles this one player can morph into thre players on match day it’s a joke. Clearly we are going to need a replacement for Ba (we actually need an additional striker too), we are desperate for a centre back and I’d like to see a right back in too.

Now here is a very worrying thought; We have 2 points less than at the same time as our relegation season and for us to reach that magical 40 point mark we need to win 33% of our remaining games – that’s a fair effort from a team who have only won just over 20% of their previous games. Add to that a shocking Christmas fixture list it doesn’t look good.

I do hope Mr Ashley is fretting over the massive increase in TV rights next season and the thought of watching the likes of West Brom and West Ham cashing in instead of us. It might just bring a dose of reality to him and make him realise how silly he’s been and therefore if we survive he makes sure he never makes the same mistakes again.

  4. Personally I think we are 5 or 6 “purples” away from where we need to be. Obviously we are not going to get them all this window. Probably not next either.

What order we get them in is important but increasing their number is key, and that should happen in line with growth in turnover.

Who? Debucey, M’Baiwa, Sissoko, Remy, are all good shouts, but like you Toonsy, I’ll wait and see what happens.

  5. No in short but arguably doesnt mean we will go down.
If it was remy with no-one going out (V.unlikely) that would boost the club as its a top quality signing much like cisse last jan

  6. FATASH – We are a big club in terms of fan base, but to say we deserve to be in the top 5 for that is laughable. We dont. If that was the case Wigan wouldve gone long ago.

We need at least 3 IMHO, a full back, a CB and Remy. I dont mind Obertoon leaving but I think Marveux hasnt had a real chance through injury. I think Ba WILL go and then we need to replace him too. Id love us to go in for someone like Long at WBA, who is different again to what we have.

In another note how far away is Raylor? He brings a decent option to the RHS and I think id rather him playing than Simmo.

Encouraging words, but as we all know actions speak louder than words

  7. Toonsy good read and like you I never really listen to the transfer ***** as 99% of it is ****.
It used to be a time when you got excited about who we might bring in and I can’t ever remember being worried about who we might lose, but the Regime put an end to all that.
Back on topic 1 player won’t be the be all and end all, everyman and their dog knows that.
I will say that I was a strong supporter of Pards but I am finding myself questioning him more and more, and the more **** he ccomes of with the more I can’t help think that he should stop being the mouth of the Regime as I know if it turns me then less supportive fans will see him as nowt else but a Regime mouth piece.
We have been told 100s of times now that it’s not really who we bring in but more about keeping our players! Do they really think we’re that stupid that we need to be told that everytime they speak to us.

  9. Pardew said last summer we were definitely getting a cb and he has since said we will definitely be getting one in January. Considering his ‘if one leaves then we need two’ comment, and also the fact Remy and Ba are being heavily linked with moves to and from Newcastle respectively, this makes me think it will end up with Ba out and Remy and a centre back in, which makes all of the pieces fit according to interviews and speculation. Wouldn’t be the worst situation in the world, but I would love a new right back with a decent delivery. I feel we’re so close to being a solid team, we have so many good players being dragged down by 2/3 championship standard players this season, replace them with decent, not necessarily big money star players, and we’ll notice a difference.

  10. for me until they’v signed it means nowt… we had players looking like they were begging to come….

did we get em…. did we $h!te

  11. I think the Definatly 1 signing comment is Pards being safe. I rekon we will sign a Centre half and a Striker winger I.e Remy.

And when he says if we lose a player i think he means simpson, Gosling Etc.

ahley needs to invest to keep us in the league as we are due big TV money next year. But they have never delivered before so its anyones guess.

      (Quote)

  12. Alex I don’t think he’s talking about Simmo who will just run down his contract till the end of the season, or Gosling, I really don’t think they would worry about them players, as was the case in the summer where Pards has went to great lengths to tell us we are in debt to Jabba for not selling our top players, because that means we didn’t need to talk about Best- Lovens’ Forster- Smith 😉

      (Quote)

  13. I’m hoping he’s saying this just to cover his back in case of the worst case scenario, no fan is happy with the defensive situation so surely he can’t be either? He needs to grow a pair and tell Ashley how it is. Ideally we need a cb, rb, lm/rm and st cover, obviously that won’t happen, but some of the players playing for us this season makes me cringe, we have no competition for places in a squad that is in Europe, I just can’t believe we’ve let ourselves into this situation.

  14. Ice. I’m on mobile no numbers, think that’s me so thanks. I think the players who are missing atm. e.g. Cabaye Saylor, Raylor & Oba are all having their reputations enhanced.

      (Quote)

  15. Despite what Pardew says there seems to be a building feeling we’ll bring in three and possibly lose Ba and Simpson. As an idea I wouldn’t be too unhappy with that, certainly a replacement for Simpson and Willo would please me no end.
However when you bring in a new player has anyone got confidence that a Remy would do better than a Giroud, Chamahk, Geronimo have done at Arsenal or Borini at Liverpool?
I’d go M’biwa (or Lescott on loan), Debuchy and Remy (???)

      (Quote)

  16. I think we have enough as it is. I think when Cabaye is back fit we will have a good midfield which will help our defensive woes. However for us to progress and improve ( which should be the aim year in year out ) we need 2-3 players. We should of got 2 in the summer and then the other in Jan to freshen up the squad. I hope the board got the players we need as we could still achieve top 8 finish but only if we get the players in.

      (Quote)

  17. Not even if that one player was Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo!!!
We need to improve the squad in terms of the players we already have but also add to it!. I would have thought that, particularly this season would highlight to Pardew how injury and suspension can effect your season.

That said, if it was a case of adding a CB this season and then improving the squad then I could live with that, providing there were additions in the summer aswell. I’m going to be honest and say I don’t can how they do it – whether they go out and spend £50m or £15m or bring in some loan deals til the end of the season – so long as they rescue this season.

  18. apparantly simpson has bought a gaff in london and he probably will want to move closer to tulisa the fact that some one will offer him more money in january will make his mind up so I think he will be off, and with regards to gosling im sure there will be a championship team out there who will take him.

Good day my fellow Newcastle fans, i think most of my fellow Newcastle fans are missing the point about how many players we need, please wake up and smell the coffee, ashely simply does not care about Newcastle or thier great fans, he has no ambition to take Newcastle to the next level, so dont be holding your breath about new players coming in this transfer window, he simply wont fund new playes, he is more concerned about his bank balance, he has now also some shares in Rangers, so does that not tell you something, is that not divided loyalties, our great club will never ever be successful under Ashely, he treats our great club and our great fans with total contempt and no respect, i will be a very happy man when Ashely leaves out great club, even if its in the championship next season, i say to you fellow Newcastle fans enough is enough, and as for pardew saying we might get on new player in january, what a sick joke, as we are in danger going down again this season, everyone can see we need at least 3 new players to avoid the drop, the first thing our great club needs as soon as possible is an new owner and a new manager, i like thousands of newcastle fans am sick to the teeth of putting up with all the lies and bullshit from Ashely and pardew, from very angry and frustrated Newcastle fan. Howay the lads.

  27. is pardew thick or does he think the general fanbase are thick. he talked of trying to challenge the top four all summer, and brings in one bloody senior player…does he think ONE extra would make a difference of ten places in the league? does ashley? they go on about being sustainable etc etc but from what I can see the way we are being run is simply unsustainable i.e. letting more senior players go than what we are bringin in/failing to address glaring weaknesses/consistent lack of investment in the first team. all of this whilst being left behind by the majority of the rest of the league. quite frankly, as a whole, the club is being run unsustainably and i think ashley, llambias and pardew have all been guilty of thinkin they are more intelligent than they actually are

Also just reading SSN app and WBA want £1.5m for Chris Woods. 21yr old and banging the goals in on loan at Milwall at the moment. Reckon he’d be a cracking buy at that price like – certainly in ahead of Ranger, Xciso and probably more of a goal threat than Shola.

  32. The words coming out of the club through Pardew don’t sound promising to me. Bringing in 1 if we lose nobody or 2 if we lose 1 isn’t going to be enough by any means. It might keep us out of relegation but is that the level of ambition? If it is this regime is going to get nothing but criticism and will deserve it. This owner just isn’t worth his salt. He proves it every day. His lapdog Llambias is hopeless. I am beginning to lose hope in Pardew as nothing but bollocks comes out of his mouth. His strategy and tactics for each game are average at best. We completely lack creativity with Ben Arfa and Cabaye out of the lineup which is what Ba has just said in the press. We also lack a solid back 4 and that has been obvious for years now. Lies and misleading statements aren’t going to improve the club. Until we get an owner in who cares and can tell the truth we will continue to struggle.

      (Quote)

  33. Agree with you Premandup @6. We are 5 or 6 purples away from being a good team. That is the worrying part because we were 5 or 6 purples away last summer and did next to nothing about it. There is no way this owner would pay out for 5 or 6 more purples unless we sold at least 3 or 4 purples for the dosh. It just isn’t going to work Ashley. You are going to end up with a bottom 10 team because you have no ambition and no clue.

  39. Pretty good MM, looks almost as good as I was at his age 😆 Could be a real talent, hopfully it doesnt go to his head. Like the bit about Milan asking for permission to play him, sounds like the case with Vuckic in Slovenia. If he was at Newcastle we would play him in the reserves till he was 21, decide he isnt ready to make the big time and so let his contract run-out, ruining a young players career.

      (Quote)

  40. A first choice CB and yeah we’d probably stay up.
Two minimum and an extension for Simmo and I’d be satisfied. My ideal is still to bring in either someone young (Clyne would have been good 😕 ) with potential. Or someone to push Simmo to second choice.
We definitely need a new dimension up front. Just watched a HBA compilation on youtube and, like with Cisse, it’s shocking how few “normal” easy goals are scored. Guessing the same probably applies for Cabaye, and possibly even Jonas (he’s only got a few, most have been pretty special though I think?)
I don’t remember our players missing hordes of chances this means we are simply not creating enough.
So yeah we need new signings, but we actually have a number of quality attacking players (not to push top 4, but definitely better than most teams), say we bring Remy in, will Pards and the coach even know what to do with him?!

      (Quote)

  41. So we get one player in, or two if we lose one, and presumably we get three in if we lose two.
I expect Ba to leave and that we will try to get a nominal fee for Simpson.
If those two do leave I would bring in Mbiwa and bench Williamson, move Jonas to RB to replace Simpson, bring in Debuchy to play RM and Remy to replace Ba.
Oh – just calculated that’s a nett outlay of about £20m – forget it!

  47. Sidekick
I understand what your saying but I don’t believe Jonas is good enough in defence to play that RB slot week in, week out. Also that system would lead back to hoofball when if we play my 433 team we would play passing overlapping football. Debuchy/Santon would burst down the flanks whilst Tiote/Anita covered for them, both full-backs are capable of tracking back.

      (Quote)

  48. Sidekick – in that case mate, I hope we don’t go for Debuchy if it is going to encourage Pards to play 4-4-2. We’ve all saw what he does with his wide men in that formation. He focuses on them supporting the full back rather than being offensive.
I agree that Debuchys strength is going forward, but I’d say so is Santon, and whilst it may leave us vulnerable at times – god it would be exciting going forward.

      (Quote)

  49. I have to say I’m not sure how Remy would play at LW in a 433, could be that he is played as an impact sub but more likely if we are spending that money on him, he’ll be played in a two man partnership in a 442.

      (Quote)

  50. Sidekick
How so? No offense mate but do you watch him regularly? If not then you can’t judge his defensive attributes. Hell most attacking full-backs don’t track back nearly as much as Santon and yet he is constantly getting stick about it. Take Dani Alves, Barca may aswell play him RW cus thats usually were he ends up, can’t defend to save his life and yet he’s ‘one of the best full-backs in the world 🙄 . Debuchy would work wonders in that set-up as would the majority of the rest of our players.

      (Quote)

  51. Sidekick ,I got to agree Debuchy is excellent going forwards but the stats show he is not quite as good as Simmo when it comes to defending. I did a comparison thing in the summer and Simmo actually has more blocks and wins more tackles but he doesn’t compare to Debuchy for forward runs. It was interesting watching him play for France he spent around 75% of the games in the opo half often leaving gaps in defence 🙄 ,I suppose what fans think is the best scenario but personally I like defenders who can defend all game ,though yes it’s nice to see the odd forward run. Key to us improving is a solid confident defence ,once we have that our MF and forwards may well improve too as the constant stresser of a rapid counter attack should not cause such problems as previously.

      (Quote)

  52. I watched Debuchy closely on tv recently during the FC Bayern Lille Champions League game. I think it was 5-0 at half time, and Lille were absolutely gash, they were lucky to have got 0…

Debuchy was up against Franck Ribery, one of the trickiest and fastest players in the world, and he didn’t do Debuchy once. Debuchy had a great game defensively. Anyone who can keep Frank Ribery in check will do for me.

We all seem to know what Debuchy can do going forward, but the bloke can defend as well. I wouldn’t say he’s a swashbuckling winger like attacking full back like Santon, but he would be a good addition to the team.

I also think things will start to pick up when Collo gets back on his game again. He’s had a couple of real seeing-to’s this season 🙁

Between 14 and 20m for an incredibly strong team.

  57. I will be delighted if we get Remy in. Even if it comes at the cost of losing Ba. Remy as a LF and HBA as a RF would be awesome. We would finally have balance in our forward areas. If we could supplement that with Debuchy at RB we would be laughing.

  58. Big D and Kimtoon, you are both right, Debuchy came out and said he was going to sit tight at Lille.

We’re gonna need more additions to the squad, cos Simmo is gonna walk away for nowt at the end of the season, so we’ll be well knackered when it comes down to full backs.

All the good work is starting to unravel, we’ll see soon whether wor lot are able to handle the pressure and expectation, and I include Pardew and the coaches in there. Bringing players in is one thing, getting them to play a good system is another.

  59. Andy – what do you reckon to Newkies diamond formation mate, with Cisse and Remy up front and Benny in behind them, Cabaye right, Anita left and Tiote in front of the back 4?.
I still prefer 4-3-3 like and reckon Remy and Benny would work with Cisse.

  60. I think quick counter-attacks down either wing really do us in. Simpson gives too much space and Santon loves to get forward but isn’t getting enough cover from Jonas. Until we do something about that and the CB position we are stuffed. There is no way around a big outlay being required but Ashley won’t go for it. Success for him would be 10th place consistently and our money in his pocket. We saw the lack of ambition last summer and now we’re hearing 1 player in will do us. Same old story. No ambition equals no trophies.

  61. Andy he didn’t say “I don’t think I will be leaving in this window”
He made it crystal clear that he wont be leaving, but if you want to get your hopes up knock yersel out lad 😉
I also think that we have more hope of winning the prem than getting Remy 😆 😆
