Is just one player going to be enough?

Remy speculation increases, but would he be enough?
Remy speculation increases, but would he be enough?
So I see Alan Pardew has been talking about transfers and has suggested we are “definitely” going to add one player to the squad.

It is unfortunately that time of year again. Mince Pies and transfer speculation as Christmas lurks around the corner, followed by a new year and then a new transfer window.

These days I hardly pay any notice to transfer speculation which some of you longer term readers may have cottoned on to. I used to get excited about them and show interest with every new player we were linked with by writing an article or two on each of them. Now though I just can’t be arsed with them as, aside from maybe one or two exceptions, the transfer window tends to end in disappointment and anger.

So the point of this article then? Well I guess to get to the point we have to look at what Alan Pardew has been saying first and foremost.

“It is a difficult window, but I think we would like to get – definitely – one player in and not lose anybody. It could be that we lose a player, you never know,” Pardew told the Chronicle.

“Obviously I lost Andy Carroll in this window and in a situation that wasn’t too dissimilar to what I’m in now two years ago, maybe it was a bit better. But if that is the case then we need two players, and if we lose two then we need three.”

He added: “Myself, Mike and Derek all agree that we should have brought one more senior player in here. For whatever reason it didn’t happen. And we have learnt from that lesson, and that’s what comes from the luxury which is the security of the owner. The owner has great faith in my ability and I have to reward that with what I think when we make an error, and say we have made a mistake.”

Well first off I guess it’s nice to see that they agree with the vast majority of fans who also thought it was a mistake not to strengthen further in the summer. It doesn’t change anything now though…

What can change though is January, and the fairly staunch promise that our numbers will be swelled by one regardless. Will it happen? Won’t it happen? I don’t know but I could probably make an educated guess!

The strongest train of speculation seems to suggest a move for Loic Remy could be on the cards. He’d be a good signing no doubt providing he can settle, but if we are assuming he is the one player then is it enough?

There are areas of our team which need strengthening and up front is one of them, but it’s the defence that I believe we should be looking to add to. Quite frankly it’s been shocking and the players who play at the back who have shall we say, limitations, are causing a lot of our problems.

Like Danny Simpson and Mike Williamson for example. I’ve said many times that I don’t think they are as bad as some make out and if you look at just defending then they are, at the very worst, decent players to have in the squad.

However a lot of this “long ball” thingybob that everyone seems to have latched on to has a lot to do with them pair. They just aren’t comfortable on the ball so the only two options you get from them whilst they have possession is a hopeful kick up field or a pass back to Tim Krul who will do much the same.

Anyway I’m in danger of having a rantso I’ll end it here…

Is adding just one player going to be enough? Is adding an attacker rather than a defender the right thing to do?

  1. I hope not Kimtoon but Ashley will be taking a huge risk if he only brings in 1 player in January. We have several players who can’t cut it (Willo, Simpson, increasingly Jonas, Shola, Obertan to name a few) in the Prem and clearly Ba is not happy looking at his latest statements to the press. As one of our genuine purples this has to be alarming for Ashley if he cares at all. So little creativity when Ben Arfa and Cabaye aren’t in the lineup and injury prone younger players like Saylor, Gosling, and Vuckic. Not a promising situation yet we continue to hear the same bollocks from Pardew.

How far out wide would Cabaye and Anita be?
    Dave
Maybe not be an exact quote but I was under the impression it was long those lines, or maybe I was just reading between the lines. Also Remy isn’t in the good books with Marseilles so they apparently want him out, with a player and cash switch with us, not entirely unplausible. What did you doubt about him coming, player being too good for us, cost of the transfer, wages he’ll demand?

  3. Big Dave – re Debuchey. Money will decide in the end most like.
If the clubs can agree a fee, and make it clear he isn’t required at Lille, he will come.
But your right about NOT getting hopes up. That includes Remy too.
    Beem there before.

I was just reading a story that Ba hadn’t got the clubs permission to do that Canal interview so could get a 2 weeks fine £90k

As for Jabba he’s a gambler and well used to taking risks

I thought we created a lot of chances against City without the likes of HBA and Cabaye in the team. The problem was we didnt put them away, were incredibly unlikey with a couple of shots (colo’s curler for one) and the rest were just offtarget from our strikers.

  6. Andy ,from my point of view if we end up in the relegation zone ,we’ll be hard pushed to get anyone of quality in. Put it this way Lamearse and Pards would have to do one hell of a salesmans patter to sell us as a worthwhile punt.

  7. Andy @ 77 everything transfer fee, wages etc there is other big clubs sniffing round so im sure he’ll get offered a lot more money than we’ll offer.
Andy im not trying to knock you but I would be amazed if we get either Debuchy or Remy, I think there is more chance of us getting Carroll and I would rate that as no chance

Its just the vindictive streak I have. Especially towards the fat bastad and his side kick. I put it in brackets for a reason.
I would like to see him suffer like we suffer, but not at the cost of our PL status. Obviously.
But like I said, we could finish 17th and I dont think he would break a sweat.
He clearly doesn’t deserve to own this football club. Would be far better suited to a wigan or west brom, who are happy just to be mid table each season.
I want more for our club than that fat **** is prepared to put in.
Does that help at all ❓

The bottom line is that we can talk on this blog as much as we want on how the team can be played with these signings and that formations, with that player starting and that player leaving but Pardew has the teamsheet, not us, he picks the team/formation, not us. Llambias and Carr (sometimes Pards and Ashley will get involved) pick the signings and sell our players not us. It may sound like I’m being a **** but I’m just saying that it’s Pardew’s call to change the team, we have no influence in it.

Andymag @81 I agree mate.We played well in patches against Man City but at times our defending was terrible just as in many other games this season. Harry will have QPR up for our game and there could be nerves involved from us. A bad start would be a disaster as the crowd might turn. This game is the match of the season for us so far. How many of us would have thought that in August? Horrific play be us in quite a few games so far and no imagination or creativity from Pardew. We still lump the ball up the field towards Willo on set pieces. Unbelievabe as it has been a complete failure. Many other instances of poor game planning. Very worrying with a useless owner and MD.

Aye personally thought it was press bollocks when I first heard it, “Newcastle are probably gunna lose a striker in Jan, they like the French market, who have we heard of that fits that bill?”. This story has picked up pace however and its being reported a fair bit, however could still just be press bollocks that has escalted
“Did you hear … is reporting that Newcastle are intersted in Remy?”
    “A little of it”
“I think there is something in it, he’s in the French league and is a striker”
“Well it’s got something to it then”
that conversation times 8 other papers.

You have to question Pards statements at times. I think it was Buddy who quite rightly pointed out that he said shortly after the season started that he was aiming for a top 4 slot.

He then comes out, when we are almost in a relegation battle and says, we made a mistake we should have bought one more senior player in the summer.

Why don’t we hear reporters ask him hard questions?

Which one player would have had us competing for a top 4 side instead of looking at a relegation battle, Alan? 😉

As much as I hate hoofball I have to defend it when its a set piece from around the half-way line, most teams operate that way. Even with passing football you can expect that, thought we were better at it v City and had a fair few chances as a result of them, however it could just be that City have a very small team and we briefly exploited that.

  17. BB @85 I think you’re right for what it’s worth. Ashley doesn’t deserve to own the club. He did pull us out of a terrible financial situation but that was down to a few other greedy idiots running the club before him. Ashley apparently didn’t do due diligence (even he stated that) and so had a huge job sorting our finances out but then he got carried away with his own bargain bin brilliance. Anything that works in the bargain bin should work in football. That is his theory. Now he is possibly learning (I’m not clear on whether he can learn or not) that this philosophy won’t work in football. And hiring a tool as the MD won’t work either. Clearly Ashley is running out of time to convince people he can be a successful football owner by the standard definition, winning games and trophies.

  27. BB at 101 what would Ashley consider a reasonable offer? I think he has over 200M pounds invested in us. Would anyone pay that kind of money for a Championship team that has been torn apart by incompetent management? Remember Ashley already tried to sell us once and got very little in the way of real offers (to allow offers on the website was another hilarious move by him as I recall). This is an amazing state to be in at this stage of the regime. All the big talk and bragging by Llambias and Pardew have come down to this. We’re in 15th place in December and we have to win against QPR because we know we won’t win any of the next 2 or 3. You couldn’t make this stuff up.

    @Big Dave

I find it similar to the question, if we just survive relegation this season would you get rid of Pardew.

For me, I would get rid of Pardew tomorrow if I thought we could get a great manager. We won’t with Jabba at the helm.

The big problem at the moment is, The world is in a recession and I haven’t heard of any interested billionaires (which is what is needed to run a top premier club) sniffing round clubs.

My biggest gripe is, the now owners of Manc City were sniffing to buy us before we got snubbed because Jabba asked for £480m!! 😯

I’m afraid at this time, Jabba is the best of a bad job, just like I think Pardew is.

  29. If our current form continues Big Dave and Troy we’ll need a lot more than a drop of red wine. It’s really killing me to watch us this season. The disappointment is huge. The fact that the owner is staying quiet may actually bode well in January. He won’t get rid of Llambias but he may bring in a couple of decent players. If we lose Ba make it 3 needed. We have no choice but to wait and see.

I’m all for giving people opportunities if they have deserved it.

To be fair, Pardew and the regime blew me out the water last season!

I’m sure you and everyone else think the same.

So to be realistic, none of us can honestly say we saw the plight of this season so far.

So, I will give the regime and Pardew this window
to prove themselves. For me, they deserve that time.

My thoughts are, as I always thought, the regime will produce nothing but mediocrity with their current policies.

Should we stay up and take in £60m+ for TV rights then that’s another step that Ashley needs to climb.

I’m certainly not confident. This season is what I expected last season. So because they proved me wrong, I will give them a chance. This window is crucial for me!

We do have a good team at the moment, we have injuries and we are down on form. @Aussie

But do you really expect people to be satisfied and praise them when we could end up in a relegation battle?

People are obviously angry because most could see the strengthening of the squad was necessary in the Summer.

What do you think of Pardew stating at the start of the season that he was aiming for a top 4 place and now, when we are plummeting and can’t get a win for love nor money, the 3 stooges admit they should have bought one extra senior player.

1 player!! Does Pards really believe 1 senior player could have us gunning for 4th spot.

They deserve praise for last season but equally, fans are entitled to criticise for them blowing it this season.

It’s about dealing with what’s in front of you as it develops.

Other stand out ones, firstly from the Star – Andy Carroll wants to come back to the Toon – boring!!

Also – West Spam looking to bid £2m for Puncheon – I still think at that money WE should be taking him like.
The other one is WBA wanting £1.5m for Chris Woods – again I don’t think we can loose for that money!, the kids is 21yrs old and banging the goals in at Milwall. Even if he got a 5yr contract and it didn’t work out, we’d still get our money back selling a 26yr old.
But for as little as £3.5m those 2 would improve our attacking options IMO

      (Quote)

  54. Troy,
In answer to your question – no.

All I am saying is that getting in a CB or a striker is not the answer to our current problems and that the board has brought in some quality players. The way people are talking on here is that we are playing bad because we didn’t get a CB in the off season. It may well have made a heap of difference but it may not have made any at all.. Yes we do need a CB and I was really disappointed we didn’t get one but to say it is the reason for where we are at form and point wise, is off the mark.
There has to be a little balance on here………

      (Quote)

  55. MM – looking at the players Lpool are going for, it just shows how stupid that club is!.
Daniel Sturridge for £12m – you’d have to ask yourself why Chelsea – one of their competitors would allow him to leave when they have a ‘striker crisis’ of they own. Particularly when he is still a young player.
Tom Ince – not so ridiculous as Sturridge, but when you consider Lpool actually had Ince on their books before letting him leave for next to nowt and now they’re gonna pay a considerable sum to get him back – fools!.
That said, if we hijacked the Ince deal, I wouldn’t be gutted like.

But when we start hoovering around the relegation zone then they deserve stick , and yeah it could do with balance but then you back them up enough to balance it up 😆 and are positive enough to balance the negativity 😀

      (Quote)

  58. Aussie – I don’t see that mate. I think if asked, most would acknowledge that the players the club have brought in have (in the main) been quality signings. I think people’s main gripe is that they simply haven’t brought enough quality players in. But to be fair, Pardew himself has admitted they made mistakes in the summer window, so I think fans complaints are fully justified based on that.
I think the other annoyance is hearing things like ‘purple players’!. Whilst I accept there has to be a financial line drawn, I also think that if the team or a specific position needs strengthening then it shouldn’t be a case of “well we already have 8 purple player” – if there is money there.
I think fans just want the club to show a bit of ambition and honesty. When Dekka starts the summer window flying to Holland with a view of spending £10-12m on LDJ and however much on Douglas and however much on Debuchy – but then finishes the window with a net spend of around £4m and only really getting Anita in, then again – not good enough.
I don’t think fans have unrealistic expectations, and I don’t think many believe one CB is the answer to our problems. We needed around 4-5 players in in the summer. That could have been achieved through free transfers or less expensive options. The board have done well in past windows but should be judged on the most recent, and based on that deserve the criticism.

  59. This statement just reeks of excuse making already. Basically setting us up for disappointment.

Every time Pardew has opening his mouth lately I get riled up because he just pisses me off.

We DEFINITELY NEED a centre back, a wide forward player and a centre back.

To say we definitely need ONE is a fecking joke. Rapidly losing faith in this man.
