  1. Good article Prem. shows we are not doing enough to attract a world wide fanbase and increase our revenue. In order to a achieve that, we need to get the team looking and playing well.

On a side note, everybody else’s revenue increases next term too – so if we don’t start spending – our competition will – and we will be left behind…

That’s if we stay up in the first place…

  2. The financial review is excellent and timely. The only point I really disagree with is not chalking up Krul as a first-team player. He’s been capped by his country, even if he is not yet the first-choice keeper for the Oranje.

(I also think the midfielder split is awkward, because Anita & Cabaye play a very similar game, but that’s not material to the article.)

  3. Comment on talksport that was pretty funny

Andy Carrol to Liverpool (6 hours including medical) Enrique to Liverpool (48 hours) Barton to QPR (48 hours) Nolan to West Ham (24 hours) Given to Man C (18 hours) Carrol replacement (6 month) Debuchy to Nufc (6 month)Can anyone else see the trend? Carr must be pulling his hair out, scouts the targets, touches base with the agents and then up pops Liarbias and Ashley and you can guess what happens.

  4. Begudgingly, I have to agree with Welly in that Krul is a nailed on 1st teamee and should be in the list. From now on in, I refuse to use the term ‘purple’ for our playes. It’s a term dorced upon us by Llambastad in some half effort to brainwash us into following his backward approach to running our beloved club.

  5. spurs revenue is more than our wage bill, struggling with what to say to that, depite smaller stadium they probably have higher gate reciepts due to higher ticket prices, more tv money, would we be happy paying more for a more successful club? get yourself down the club shop, the one that’s not been closed

      (Quote)

  6. @6, I assume you mean Spurs revenue bigger than our turn over + wage bill? Indeed, we are not as big as we think we are…

  7. Good article and I admire the detail you’ve gone into but a couple of things I would point out is that your figures surely must be wrong:

The club has gone from haemorraging money to making a clear profit at this moment in time which is to be commended but we are now a whisker away from that going backwards again if we are relegated and we would be doing far better without the huge amounts being skimmed off the profit margin by Mr Ashley for his own personal fortune.

He simply is not investing enough of what the club makes in TV/Advertising/Player/shirt sales and all other revenue streams back into the actual team.

Aside from my personal belief that he has no personal affection for the club other than the money it generates he has barely re-invested 50% of even the out-going players revenue back into players.

Any normal person would speculate to accumulate but Mr Ashley prefers to stagnate and watch the competition go waltzing past us.

It is nothing short of soul-destroying seeing our collapse since last season when it could so easily have been onwards and upwards and NOBODY is to blame but him.

But he DOES NOT CARE as he will always, always cover himself and line his own pockets.

If the club goes down he simply tightens the purse strings of the club, not himself.

  8. Shamrock – I thought you stopped reading my posts? 😉

Sorry, that was reflex. 😳 I agree with you on not using “purple”, it’s undignified to imitate the regime.

      (Quote)

  9. no shamrock i just meant they can afford to pay more in wages than we actually make in revenue so it is unfeasable that we look to splurge money to compete, as much as i’d like to see a few signings to make the first team stonger not just plump up the squad

i live in hope that we compete by making a lot more right decisions than wrong (no wonder i’m depressed)

You agreeing with me now. Is this what they call a ceasefire?!

  11. Great article this one, thanks Premandup
We need alot more sponsorship money coming in to the club.
I thought this had already been talked about by the board and Limpbastad was going to get sorted. 😕
If you have a look at manure and see how many different sponsors they have for example, we are sadly lacking.
If we persist with this ‘cant compete on wages ‘ line, then our days in the PL are surely limited.
I dont hear any other clubs crying about wages, agents fees, transfer fees, etc etc
we are turning into a proper joke club.
    👿

  12. Geordiedan – I’m looking at the 2011 accounts, linked to at http://www.nufcblog.org/2012/03/newcastle-united-2011-accounts-online/. No dividend was paid. Between the two of them (the accounts don’t break down that fine), Ashley and Llambias received about three hundred thousand pounds for the year – not bad, but nowhere near enough for another first team player.

There are plenty of reasons to despise the regime without inventing new ones.

      (Quote)

  13. Totally delusional if you think we will ever have 18/19 ‘purples’ under this regime.

Also think the term ‘purple’ needs some clarification; rather than an ‘international class’ player, Lambias’ definition is more like ‘first team ready’ which includes the likes of Simpson etc.

We only have 11 or possible 12 ‘purples’. Your definition is more like Sir Bobby’s ‘blue chip’ player of which we have around 5 or 6; Krul, Coloccini, Cabaye, HBA, Cisse, Tiote (not on current form).

Either way we are not going to be challenging for anything in the short term and with the way the club is managed, both financially and on the pitch, we are likely to plod on indefinately.

      (Quote)

  14. Shamrock – 😆 I’m sure that we still have differences of opinion (and let’s face it, transfer windows always raise the temperature), but there’s no need to disagree about everything!

  15. I take it Ashley has withdrawn his £20M a year investment promise then. ❓ 😕
Its nigh on impossible to be a self sufficient club in the PL .
You need financial input from somewhere, either the owner or sponsors or both.. Tv money and season tickets are not enough.
How much is a parachute payment these days ❓ ❓

  16. Very good article. Enjoyed it immensely. Even learned a new thing or two. Write more – I am getting very tired of the lazy journalists’ poor efforts out there.
Like others, though, I hate the term ‘purple’ players – it is disrespectful and misleading. How many purple accountants does Ashley have? Does he deny himself top quality financial advice, because he already has the quota of ‘purple’ financial advisers. Stupid term – stupid way of looking at things – stupid people who use it.

  17. On the financial side it shows that having a full stadium is only part of the turnover equation. Living in America you notice that while people know of Newcastle from our glory days (Keegan, Robson) we don’t have the same level of marketing as Spurs, Citeh, United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. Their global fan base plus years of CL money has put them way ahead of us.

The way to develop that is to build a squad that can compete for the CL and then your profile raises. To do that you need to invest which we are not doing.

  18. BB – hold up. “I want to finish the season here but the club also has their say, let’s wait and see. Until the window closes there will be speculation,” Gomis says. That is not a no way, that’s a not-yet-good-enough.

If the Remy decision wan’t made for a financial reason, then it must be for something else. Perhaps Joey Barton sowed the seeds of doubt regarding the board and lack of ambition.
Or maybe its because we have a shyte manager 😯 who cant play fifa. 😕

Having worked in senior management the term Purple is quite sane compared to some of the stupidity I’ve heard.

Personally I hate the term “ambition”. Overspending beyond our means is not a sign of ambition, but stupidity.

  23. Prem – it sounds so easy doesnt it?

Can you imagine if we actually did something as a club that made sense! 😀

It does show the theory is there just need the practice.

  24. BB – yeah, you’re probably right. We won’t sign anyone this window. But so long as the academy keeps on unearthing gifted youngsters like Matt D. Bushy, I think we’ll be alright. 😉

  25. welly – I never said we wont sign anyone.
Just not the top saught after players everyone else is also looking at.
If we can get in someone under the radar, then we have a chance.
Not so easy in these days of instant news and twatter etc.
we should have had the deals tied up before the window opened. No excuse. cesspool did it with sturridge.
fail by the regime yet again.

  26. No Liam it is not easy, getting the right people for the right money has never been easy. Funnily enough caught part of the Supermac interview on talksport this lunchtime. He was giving examples of Cheapskate Newcastle going back to the 70’s. Nothing changes, doesn’t matter who owns or runs the club.

      (Quote)

  27. for those that say we need 3-4 i agree, long term, but it would mean we have players on the books that will be unregistered as we only have room for a couple, so we’d have to loan out a couple of players out or pay them and not even be able to play them (not the most financially astute)

and the ratio above (figures now out of date) show are wage bill as 60% turnover, the club really need to increase revenue to afford to be able to comfortably pay much more

      (Quote)

  28. hey.. AP says we only need 1 or 2 players in!! hahahaha….
Also…. he says he will sit down with colo NEXT FUKIN WEEK….. humm.. why wait until we are nearly at the end of the window to even find out if you need to get a repalcement captain and top draw defender?? why next week.. why not last week when it kicked off?

      (Quote)

  29. and its even more worrying that AP says we need to find a replacement for Ba… that is t o say we dont have one at this time…. then he says the first of many classic lines we will be hearing lots of as the wondow closes…’we wont be rushed and we wont make knee **** reactions’… here we go lads…… de ja vu anyone?

  30. PREM, Good article very interesting . I don’t pretend to be a financial whizzkid ,so much of it goes over my head .Obviously I can see that you can’t spend more than you got coming in , but sometimes you have to speculate to accumilate ,take a gamble if you like ,I’m sure Mikey’s not adverse to that 😉 .A little overspend now could well prevent disaster and be partly recouped from next seasons t.v cash deal ,but then as I said I’m no Financial whizz so maybe it’s not a viable option. Also much depends on how much he cares about his investment ,I dunno maybe he can afford for us to drop more than he can to invest 😉 😕

      (Quote)

  31. BB – you wrote, “As soon as word gets out he is willing to come to us, one of the other mentioned clubs will come in and hi jack the deal with proper wages. Its our achilles heel everytime.”

Not some of the time, everytime. As in, there is not a time when it does not happen. It’s not uncommon to overtate one’s point, but I don’t know why you can’t acknowledge it!

As for top players “under the radar”? Debuchy’s intention to leave France was known about for months. Nobody lured him away. You’re over-reacting to this Remy business. The club can still sign gifted players without being beaten with a better offer.

      (Quote)

  32. would you be happy if we signed danny graham? how many would be shouting for another striker too?

  33. Chuck, if you cannot see how the is is article is relevant to football then I’d suggest it is you who is in the wrong place. Keep it simple and stick to reading Roy of the Rovers, you’ll be less confused that way.

  34. Craig @33 ,Got to agree ,don’t know why this hasn’t already been sorted ,it’s gonna start to effect our transfer activity as at the moment we need 1 CB but if Colo goes say next week we then need 2 🙄 .How can the club replace him at such short notice it’s madness .

      (Quote)

  35. Prem and up – Was referring to the fact that in theory it is easy but in practice not.

Supermac is probably right but dont we all moan that footballers get paid too much, dont earn it etc etc etc

We are run as a business now mindful or the climate we are in.
Fantasy clubs like QPR wont be around in 5 years time possibly sinking into administration

      (Quote)

  36. Kim, an overspend is OK if there is a potential return covering it. Good debt is money borrowed to develop an income. Bad debt is money for a new TV.

Splashing the cash on fees is different to spending on wages. I have no problem on the former. So paying £75kpw on a loan til the end of the season makes sense. Overpaying Remy in the hope he comes good next season does not. Paying £10m fees instead of £8m is less of a problem in my eyes.

We can build a good squad within the constraints but it ain’t easy, and the current regime are slowly but surely managing it. The current crisis if overcome will become meaningless in a year or two. Relegation however will be a lot more serious than last time.

      (Quote)

  37. i reckon we are a lot more active than people realise, i reckon the majority of deals done go through not just for us but a lot of other clubs too

i have mixed opinions on graham, wouldn’t break the bank, i feel he would be committed as he’s a toon fan, may be happy as second choice to cisse if we play one up top but not sure he would make the first team when everyone else is fit

      (Quote)

  38. this next comment is meant as a joke

relegation would be fine prem, we would then be happy to get colo off the wage bill, and we have a lot of fringe players who could do with championship experience

but in all seriousness i think we would survive in the championship again as we havn’t gone for broke

      (Quote)

  39. Alan @44 , I think he would play with fight and heart but he is a squad player in my eyes like Best or Shola but with a better strike rate. He could actually be an astute signing but is he the answer to Ba’s replacement , no not imo. Wish we’d kept Guthrie by the way ,I liked him .

      (Quote)

  40. As the general consensus seems to be against the use of the word purples for our players I will go along. I never meant to imitate the club, only to make fun of Llambias our club fool. Anyway we can certainly show the players more respect by not using it. As for our expenditures vs earnings I would agree with those that say Ashley must invest to improve the club and increase the worldwide following. However we are clearly moving in the opposite direction. The bargain bin man strikes again.

      (Quote)

  41. To be fair, lads and lasses:

    Mark Douglas Mark Douglas ‏@MsiDouglas

Clarification on the ‘we need 2’ point: two to avoid relegation. Am sure the squad will be strengthened beyond the 2 senior recruits but they’ll be more likely to be Haidara type young players. My info is a chance of more than 2 senior recruits… One would be a start tho!

Sounds fair(ish). As long as it actually happens!

      (Quote)

  42. There is definitely wisdom in saying clubs like QPR may disappear in a puff of smoke by over-spending. But what if the incoming players keep QPR up and Fernandez gets all that new TV money? And what if by under-spending we go down and lose everything? We are only a few points above them and they are slowly turning their season around. Are we? Last time I checked we were bottom of the form chart. It looks as if we’re going to bring in a young fullback for a couple of million pounds. Is that going to turn our season around? We now have Ba’s wages off the wage bill. Just what is the plan here? I like your article Premandup. Lots of food for thought.

      (Quote)

  43. If we get a quality striker and CB in this window I will be quite happy with Ashley because it would help a great deal to ensure we stay in the Prem. But it will take money. You can’t have Prem quality players who can help right away for low wages. We are already seeing that. It’s the reason Ba left and it may be the reason others don’t come to us, not just Remy. If we can’t find a way around this impasse I fear for the future of the club. We would have greatly expanded revenue next season to cover the cost of 2 expensive players now. My guess is Ashley won’t do it. He will take the chance of finishing 16th or 17th over short term over-spending.

      (Quote)

  44. RE: Graham… I’d love it if we signed him. 4 goals in his last 6 appearances? Excellent, get him in. And it’s been mentioned that he’d work his socks off for us.

Ameobi – 1 goal in 432 BPL minutes this season – 432 mins per goal.
Graham – 12 goals in 2842 BPL mins – 236 mins per goal.

And that’s ignoring Graham’s cup heroics. He may not be first choice, but he’d be excellent to have around.

      (Quote)

  45. Well with Ba’s wages, Xisco’s wages and possibly Colo’s in coming days – I’d say our seekly wage budget is about to go up by almost £200k. Get some good players in Llambastad!

  48. if we get anyone it will be an import who will take so long to settle in that the season will be over and he will be plying his trade in the CCC.. plus the club are now also thinking we will be in the CCC next year and i bet that will be reflecting on the offer we make to players too. we are proper ****** now.. our shithead owner didnt want to build on the team when he was 100% certain we would be in the premier ship, was riding a feel good factor, was summer time and had plenty of time to do the deals, and he was actually starting to get a few geordies thawing out towards him… what chance do we have really of him making any investment now he thinks we probably are going down?? about zero i would say.

Won`t cost the earth in fees or wages, better than Shola/Sammy/Nile—–Strong,skillful and scores goals. Even if we go for a more high profile striker what`s to lose in bringing him in as well. ❓

  52. CT.. i think that while this guy sounds good alas we are not in a position to take a punt on a guy who may or may not hit the ground running for us. i think we need to loan in some top draw players and get some winning spirit in our **** team. I said it before, get lampard in on loan and give him 200k per week til end of the season.. that sort of deal is what we need. top draw winner mentality english guys that will fight for the club.

I’m sure one of the reasons we take so long is we haggle over wages down to the last penny. I can see Llambias loving every minute of it while players grind their teeth. If we can’t do it this window it might be much less important in the summer because we may go down. Then all the pressure will be to sell players who are fed up and demanding to leave. But wait, we’ve got the two clever lads, Ashley and Llambias so I’m sure we’ll be fine. And I’m sure we’ll all love finishing 16th or 17th as well.
