Game On! Newcastle v Chelsea

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Newcastle take on Chelsea this afternoon in what promises to be a tough encounter for the Magpies.

Granted our midweek win over Aston Villa has given us some breathing room away from the basement of the Premier League but there is till work to do before we can forget about the dreaded “r” word.

Three points today would be a nice surprise and getting them over one of the top teams in the league would be a welcome boost. Personally I always have these types of games down as bonus matches, where any points are a bonus whether we be at home or away. Maybe I’m being harsh on our team and their ability to compete with the so-called “big boys” but let’s be honest, they are up near the top of the league for a reason, in much the same way we’re near the bottom for a reason.

The game itself is not being broadcast here in the UK as it’s a Saturday 3pm kick-off and they only get shown around the world and not in the UK. That is unless you can get hold of a stream to watch the match. Not that I condone that sort of behaviour of course but I can’t stop you from posting links to decent streams that you may find on your travels around the web. Hint hint…

The match preview in online and can be viewed here if you haven’t already done so. It featured injury news for both sides and also a brief history of the fixture along with some fun facts and statistics to go along with the match.

Team news will be published below in full as and when it becomes available. Personally I don’t expect to see too much changed from the side that beat Aston Villa but then I guess you never know. You’ll have to wait to find out.

Which neatly brings this article to a close and now it’s over to our team to do the talking for us. As always comments on the match as it progresses but please bear in mind younger also read us before you go off on a rant.

  1. Half time – Cisse, Gouffran and Sissoko off – Saylor, Bigi and Elliott on – let’s defend this lead!!!! 😆 😆
Seriously tho, the way the other results are going we defo need 3 points from this one!!

  2. That was a BRILLIANT performance. Can we keep it together for 90 minutes though.

Anita for Perch second half after that yellow?

  3. @JJ

You think he will last till the summer 😀

Good first half one up and we give Ba a good kicking 😀

  4. Happy to admit that I didn’t expect Jonas to play the way he has so far. Feel sorry for Ba but I can’t help being relieved that he is off.

  5. Would defo think about putting Anita on in place of Perch. it’s not like Chelsea have loads of massive players, Anita isn’t much smaller than Mata/Oscar etc

  6. Okay, fitness questions: Can we continue to play like this in the 2nd half, or will we run out of gas as we often seem to do?

Jonas has been very, very good today, work horsing it. If only he could cross…

  7. We outplayed them in that half ,deserving of our lead ,more second half please and for gods sake no sitting back on a 1.0 lead please.

  8. Great half, hope we can keep the energy up for the second… been impressed with gouffran, he has been busy.. the game is getting played around sissoko at the moment and he has been a little quiet for my liking. Marv might be a good option for him after 60 minutes..

  9. Glad to be proved wrong about Jonas starting this game. He has been great today. Unfortunately his crossing still sucks but if Debuchy is there to support him then its not a major issue.
I think the competition for places has upped his game too.

Gouffran also very impressive. I said we needed a Bellemy type and he isn’t far from it. Just less of a gobshite.

Cisse missed a decent chance but more me he is getting back to form. His link up play was superb at times.

Our midfield has completely outplayed Chelsea’s.

Pard’s gets 10 out of 10 so far. BUT and big BUT how will he react to the changes Benitez will make in his own team and tactics. That is the true test.

We’ve lost or drawn having taken the lead on eight occasions this season. So the second half will be huge.

  10. Great first half. IMO better than the villa half because this looked very deliberate.

I’ll give credit to Pardew this looks very deliberate. Cisse’s play outside the box is also looking good.

Great performance from the team and Pardew.

  11. Aussie,
I might push Sissoko back into DM and put Marv on for Perch. Don’t like the midfield detroyer on a yellow against a top team like Chelsea. They got some clever players who will take adnvantage of that.

  12. Be interesting to see what Rafa does with Chelsea 2nd half . What ever he does hope Pards has an answer to it . Lots of scribbling by Rafa at the end there.

  13. sharpy… i know you are laughing but i was just saying with JJ b4.. if we were leading 1-0 at half time that he will give it ten mins in the second half then make stupid swap outs, defend the lead and lose 1-2..i hope he does not.

  14. Any truth in the rumour that Pardew signed the Swansea Ball Boy?

Bring him on for the last ten minutes. Chelsea wouldn’t dare go anywhere near him

  15. im very impressed with Gouffran today looks a far better player than the Villa game, Jonas on the score sheet happy day, he is industrious in defend and he has the ability to nick a goal, More of the same in the 2nd half i hope…if we can manage to get an early 2nd i would give Mbiwa a run at the back give him a taste of it , i think he be ideal to deal with torres with his pace a physicality

  16. I expected sissoko to impress but gourron has been excellent. We got ourselves a good player there…very direct and knows where to go with the ball

  17. In fairness there were quite a few #nufc fans around the Press box that applauded Ba off #cfc

    😉

  18. Rafa, hasn’t got many options on the bench to change things up. This game is there for the taking, it is ours to win. However If we second half it like we have been, we will struggle. I hope we come out and kick some more faces….. 🙂

  19. If we had to do a season on first half results we’d be in a Champions League position. So we can’t get too excited yet.

  20. Um, shouldn’t that Colo roundhouse kick have been a penalty? I mean, thank **** for Howard Webb not giving penalties for violent and dangerous behavior (in this case) but we could be 10 men and 1-1 right now, right?

Also, two-footed Ramires tackle = Perch throwing the ball away.

  21. BD 🙂 🙂 I hope you have a **** load more of them if they keep working out 🙂

      (Quote)

  22. I hope we keep the intensity up. We tend to try time waste when a goal up which lowers the intensity and changes the momentum of the game.

      (Quote)

  23. With all the attacking talent on the pitch who the hell wouldve thought that Jonas would be the one to score 😆

      (Quote)

  24. JJ… my thoughts exactly.. been here a few times havent we… leading at half time 1-0 or even 2-0… its always the second half that **** us up the ****… AP tactics here we come.. grow some balls AP and keep attacking.

      (Quote)

  25. Thats typical of us isnt it 🙄 , only we can dominate a 1st half and then lose all tempo in the second.

      (Quote)

  26. why are we so gash in the second half this season, last season we were always better in it weren;t we ? 😕
