Game On! Tottenham v Newcastle

Game On at the Lane
Game On at the Lane
Good morning! Well it was morning when this was published so don’t get funny if you’re reading this after midday!

An early start awaits as United head off to White Hart Lane to take on Andre Villas-Boas and his in-form Tottenham Hotspur outfit.

I don’t like Villas-Boas, purely for comments made after Chelsea took all three points at St James’ Park last season. That was the match David Luiz escaped a red card for hauling down Demba Ba in the third minute. Being the last man Luiz should have walked but the referee failed to send him off. It didn’t matter as Villa-Boas and his disrespectful trap insisted they only needed ten men anyway, even though they had twelve!

Anyway, let bygones be bygones and all that. That was then and this is now, and while Tottenham have been impressive of late the upturn in fortunes for United can’t be ignored. If this game had been just a few weeks ago I’d have been dreading it but now I have a sense of hope. Call it blind optimism if you will but I’m certain that even if we don’t manage to grab a positive result today it won’t be for the lack of trying.

The match is being broadcast live here in the UK and around the world so if you’re not heading off to White Hart Lane or don’t have access to any of those channels then the chances of picking up a stream are pretty good. Once again normal rules apply and if you know of a decent stream then by all means feel fee to leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

The match preview is online here for you to peruse at your leisure. It features injury news, stats, facts and a some background behind the fixture. For team news you will need to look below as it will be published as soon as it becomes available. For now though it’s game on!

  1. Jonas makes my blood boil, consistantly giving the ball away and putting us under pressure. GET HIM OFF!!!!

  2. Guti, back to being **** again…

When he or Perch get it, everything seems to slow down by 30km/h.

Mind you, last time I said that he scored a cracker… 😆

  3. Miles behind today, Newbies linking up nicely there like, great running from Sissoko and good positioning by Gouffran….. Hope yet kids 😛

  4. Spurs playing counter attacking game, so dangerous, but we have matched them.

WTF was that. Perfect ball in from Cabaye and there’s nobody near it???

  5. He may come on and be ****, but for me this game is crying out for Tiote instead of Perch.

Jonas playing I’m alright with for now, but I’d like to see Marv on at some stage if Jonas remains as ineffective as he’s been. Think he’ll cause damage against tired legs.

  6. Jonas… is… so… so…. sl…sl…ow… in … his dec..ion making… on… the … ball…

So frustrating. He never used to be like this. He’s reminding me of Shola.

  7. i said b4, i think the key to the game is Bale.. shut him out and we have a good chance of winning.

  8. I have been watching Saylor as much as I can and he is forever talking to the players and gesturing to them to move, calm down, slow down etc, IMO he is important part of the team

  9. Great first half from the lads. Think we’d be controlling it more if Anita was in front of back four. He’s very good in possession – Perch always looks a bit rushed.

  10. Good first half. It has been pretty much 50-50 so far. On course for my 3-1 bet as well (£410 if it comes through :D)

  11. JJ, why was the goal a mistake from Perch????
If Bale hit low and Perch jumped……..

  12. Forgot perch was playing personally, apart from gifting them a free shot for the goal he has been invisible. Tiote or Anita should be brought in to give a bit of energy, think It would tilt the midfield balance in our favor! Gouffran and cabaye been excellent…full backs offering a threat. Guti workin hard but little end product. The game is 50-50 and there for the taking

  13. Dave,

Its all very well looking at the like of Perch and Jonas and saying they are putting in great effort and working hard.

But when you have grafters like Tiote and Anita who actually have a touch of class about them too, then I don’t get it.

Jonas especially for me, looks like a players who tries his absolute best and always gives 110% but still just looks a level below his team mates on the ball. He just isn’t up to this level anymore.

It doesn’t mean he can’t give the odd good performance, but he’s a squad player now and no more.

When Ben Arfa is back, I expect to see Jonas on the bench.

Tiote/Anita should be ahead of Perch. 100% no doubt!

But on the whole. We really do have some quality in this team. I’m so delighted we got Gouffran instead of Remy. He is EXACTLY what we needed. A Bellemy type striker.

Not prolific but he adds so so much to the team. Real team player.

  14. To be fair. The blame will go on Perch, but each player aside from Jonas were equally ****.

      (Quote)

  15. Dave @95. Absolutely right. I’ve been watching him too and love how he’s handling things out there.

Good half from the lads. We can take this one

      (Quote)

  16. Solano, Sissoko made himself big, up on his toes. If its over him, its over the bar. Jonas jumped, tried his best. No complaints, but the other two were pathetic. Perch especially because it went half an inch over his head.

      (Quote)

  17. Krul was a little too far off his line also, had to dive across and backward.. Perch’s fault for not telling Krul to get back

      (Quote)

  18. I would say Jonas was one of are better performers that half (Im not a big Jonas fan either) He put Sissoko through a few times and for the one leading to the goal. None of our players really played bad in that half.

  19. Can`t believe Jonas neggers are in voice again. He´s put in a good fight and come up with a couple of good balls one leading to assist in our goal.

Marveaux deserves a chance too though so I won`t complain if he replaces Jonas at some point. Would like to see Tiote too.

  20. Aussie?
That question really doesn’t deserve a reply. But I’ll oblige.

The freekick was from a fair distance. To get that much power and keep it low enough to go under the wall is far far far harder than to get it up and over from 30 yards.

Even so, you have a split second to react to the ball like Jonas did. Perch didn’t move a muscle. He looked like he was asleep or day dreaming about last nights supper.

    It was diabolical defending.

      (Quote)

  21. After seeing the replay several times now, it’s clear Perch had time to actually move his head to the side and continue watching the ball go past into the net, so if he had time to do that he could have put his head in the way.

      (Quote)

  22. Santii,
I’d agree none of our players were that bad. But Perch did have one shocking moment.
Jonas has been ok, done well for his level of ability in fact. I just feel he is a class behind the others on the field in ability. Can’t fault his effort though.

      (Quote)

  23. From your reponse JJ, I am guessing that you have never stood in a wall… Jonas jumped no matter where it was going, he didn’t react… it was hit with pace but I guess there is no arguing the point with you.

      (Quote)

  24. There we go. Twice in two minutes Jonas gives a silly ball away.

He has some great moments, puts in some great workrate, but those little mistakes and lapses in concentration in giving it away too easy are just too common for my liking.

Mind you, that’s been my problem with Tiote this season too.

      (Quote)

  25. sounds to me like we change nothing but then with the last 30 mins to go bring on tiote to add some bite and terrorise the yids.

      (Quote)

  26. Aussie, you’d be guessing wrong. You can read the direction of the ball the second he kicks it. And then you react with instinct. With experience your instinctive reactions get better…

My point is Perch didn’t react at all. That made the difference.

      (Quote)

  27. Gouffran is the last player we needed to lose. His movement gives the others so much more space to work in. 😕

If Cisse gets injured now we’re in real trouble up front.

      (Quote)

  28. It’s **** that he looks injured, but its been a long time since we’ve had a bench where we can bring a sub on as good as marvaux,

      (Quote)

  29. If it is a cut then he’ll should be right and not out of action for too long… I hope.

      (Quote)

  30. Just hope Marv puts in the same effort Gouffran did.

He’ll be just as good on the ball, but its off the ball where he’ll be lacking a bit IMO.

      (Quote)

  31. Gouffran looks like bruised bone. He’ll have a cut and a dead leg for a week or so. My guess is he’ll be out two weeks. Just hope there’s no hairline fracture. Didn’t look like it though.

      (Quote)

  32. Look at the difference from now until the end of the game and you’ll see the difference Gouffran’s off the ball work makes.

He creates space, stretches the opposition defence, keeps them defending deeper. He can hold it up, attack with pace. etc. He also isn’t afraid to get back and defend or pressure the opposition giving them no time on the ball.

Marv is good but he won’t do that!

Without him, Spurs can apply a whole lot more pressure, push up more and we’ll have less space when attacking.

That’s how much a player like him adds to the team. Invalueable.

      (Quote)

  33. #115 do not think the free kick was hit with that much pace, and also think that Jonas jumped to try and head the ball, Perch just stood still, and if you look at his facial expression, he just did not react quick enough, the guys on Sky saying exactly the same thing.

      (Quote)

  34. Big Dave 🙂 I’m hoping its a cut and he doesn’t like the sight of blood 🙂

      (Quote)

  35. Reckon if Perch does get replaced by Tiote he should get one proper kick in on Bale, then Tiote can come on and finish him off.

All it’ll cost is two yellows 😀 😆

      (Quote)

  36. Cabaye looks shattered. Needs to work on stamina. But I guess he does put in a lot of work and has been out for a while.
