Back in our hands?

Wigan miss chance to overtake United
Wigan miss chance to overtake United
Personally I hate relying on other results when it comes to our own fortune, but to be honest I’ll take pretty much anything that comes our way right now.

So whilst I’m loathe to revel in the misfortunes of others, I am still delighted that Swansea managed to do us a favour last night by beating Wigan 3-2 at the DW Stadium.

That game was Wigan’s game in hand and if they’d have won it they would have overtaken us and ensured we faced QPR at the weekend as the last occupants of the relegation zone. However as things stand now we are still three points ahead of the Latics with just two games left to play for all teams involved in the relegation dogfight.

So how do things stand now following on from the result last night? Well the first thing to observe is that our destiny is now back in our own hands. From experience that chance often doesn’t come around twice so it’s now up to us to take the chance we’ve been afforded with both hands.

To ensure we make the most of this chance we must pick up a win at QPR on Sunday. If we manage to grab just a second away win of the campaign it would mean that Wigan would then definitely have to win their two remaining fixtures which, if they did manage, would mean we need to pick up a point against Arsenal to be safe. Even a draw for us at QPR would be enough providing Arsenal beat Wigan at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

To be fair there are still lots of permutations and many twists and turns that could happen and any team up to Fulham in 12th could still be dragged into things, however unlikely it may seem right now. What we do have is a second chance to keep the ball in our court so to speak, but to make sure it remains that way we must win this weekend at QPR.

And if the players and manager can’t get that then well….

  1. Don’t worry Toby mate, Newkie, Munich and I are on the job. We have a football plan and now Ashley only needs to read the blog and we’re away to the races next season. 😉

  3. Kev I would rather we stuck with Pards 😆 😆 although as you say he’s not in work I think his last footie job was 7 yrs ago so he will be well switched on to the modern game

  4. Tonights result also means Chelsea aren’t secure in 3rd either, so will hopefully stuff the villa on Saturday.
Spuds should beat stoke on sunday meaning arsenal will have to go all out to beat wigan on Tuesday.
Its still all to play for, but we MUST get something from QPR.
Losing on sunday drops us right back in the **** once again.
👿 It would also give wigan a boost for Tuesday.
    that’s the worst scenario.

  5. KEV@302 Hoddle does at least know how too set his teams up to play good football . Bring in Ginola as his Assistant and someone like Keown , Pallister or Woodgate as a defensive coach and i would be happy .

  6. Toonarmyelite @ 308 Thank you so much for posting that article. I’ve been ridiculed for even suggesting this might be taking place! I’ve seen every game this season but one. I didn’t know the stats of the bad calls against us but knew we’d be a lot higher up the table without them. The whole season I can only think of one game when I felt Newcastle got ‘the rub of the green’ (good luck) and I remember thinking in that game, “*** now I know how Man U fans must feel all the time!” There is no way that the calls for and against us have been 50/50. I’ve been saying for ages that I didn’t understand why a fourth referee couldn’t watch it on tv replay and make a call. It would only take seconds and not hold up the game. We need more than just goal line technology to stop this blatant game rigging.

  7. @JILL never thought this sort of thing could be going on in the prem but have seen so many very iffy decision go against us this season, that i said last saturday about the linesman that missed the harada tackle also missed cisse goal on saturday is as bent as a 3 pound note in my view and would not be surprised if the dude was takeing money on the side 😯

Tae@308 ,Interesting link mate ,I must say I was mad as hell that Wilkes was lino for our West Ham game given his incompetance when we faced Wigan ,to then ‘Slip’ just as Cisse scored yet proclaim it wasn’t over compounds it. That Halsey ,generally a good ref has had to take the rap for Wilkes incompetence beggers belief and the whole thing stinks. The FA not takeing retrospective action over Mcmanaman cause he saw it ,yet Suarez bites ivanovich who shows the ref his bite mark ,meaning the ref is aware yet still gets a 10 game ban is completely skewed imo. I don’t condone biteing it’s foul behaviour but that tackle was horrific and should never of gone unpunished imo. Lastly, if Whelan really did say what’s quoted in that link to Ashley then it just comfirms what an arrogant **** he is.

I’ve only ever seen it the other way around. If the owner plans to sell, the last thing he wants to do is saddle a new owner with a manager, unless that manager is SAF. A prospective purchaser is going to want £XM off the purchase price if he is taking Pardew on a long term contract. So, if the eight year contract is genuine, it would suggest Ashley is here for the long haul too.

Couldn’t of put it better myself – Troys a weasel. He just loves the attention – there’s no rationality to his logic – he simply grabs speculation out of thin air and regurgitates it as fact.

I see he’s feeling picked on and embarrassed by my comments. He would usually tell other bloggers to skip and move on if they’re bored by his posts, but now he is reaching out to them for support because it’s too hot for him. 😛

Have you noticed he’s stopped picking on folk now, because he knows he’ll get pounced on if he carries on the way he used to? He’s stopped being the bully boy. 😛

If only folks knew what a vexatious charlatan he is. Did you ever hear about the time Lee Clark stormed off from a talk in after Troy got on his case? Or the time he got thrown out by Stiff Little Fingers, his favourite band, for upsetting Jake Burns?

The only time he has ever played 11 a side football is in a mixed teams charity match. He was the laughing stock because he was the only one taking it deadly serious. He nearly took the head off a poor mother in goal when he blasted the ball at her from six yards. Five years on, he’s still the talk of my old neighbours. He didn’t even see what he had done wrong. 😛

I’m not having a go for having a go sake. He’s shifted his opinion so much, I actually agreed with him yesterday and said so. You can bet he’ll never admit to changing his opinion though. 😛

  25. TAE @ 327 – You and I were talking about the Cisse effort. Besides, the video showed it wasn’t over the line, so whether he’s bent or not, he called it right.

There is literally no point in arguing without “second guessing” what the owner would do. If we all argue on the basis of what we want then we all would be signing Lewandowski, Robben, Ronaldo, Messi, and Shola on a 10 year contract.

I don’t agree with you saying the lino was a cheat for the Cisse goal when it didn’t cross the line. The next time don’t agree with you, I’ll tell you again. I don’t see how you can say he was a cheat for the Cisse goal as a result of his incompetence at Wigan? Do we have a feud?

Understand your sentiments – but sometimes the assumptions are too much without foundation.

For example – many repeat the mantra that Ashley only pays managers a smaller wage yet they ignore Keegan was paid 2million a year basic – as was shown in the hearing (therefore fact)

Pardew was appointed at his market rate – the club at that time needed a value proposition and if the reports are correct – and he is paid a handsome success bonus – that’s a great and fair contract for all. Both parties were happy with it and signed it.

But to thereon say the club won’t pay a higher rate for a different manager is a false assumption as 1 – history in KKs case shows recently the opposite of that – and 2 we don’t know who the next manager will be or from what league he comes.

Football is a global market, 500k may be a fortune to a top level Portuguese or Dutch manager. Or for the established top tier managers not so – but the day you can only form an opinion on such matters is when the real detail becomes public knowledge – so I empathise with Bbs position on that point and disagree with Troy and Big D.

  37. B&B can you not keep your personal stuff of the blog and sort it somewhere private, or are you not man enough to sort your feud with Troy out face to face ? As thats the impression I get .
I have seen Troy say to you not to bring it on here but you continue to try to goad him on here in some sad attempt to embarrase him.
But it is getting really tiring now and I have noticed that other bloggers have also asked you to keep it off here as they’re getting bored with it, but you continue with it trying to score cheap points against , do you realise that its you that ends up looking like a silly school boy. So do yourself and others a favour and drop it and keep your feud of here.

Where do you get that from? Of course, there’s a point. You say what you want the owner to do. Then everyone knows where they stand when you argue with them and confidently and authoritatively express your views. If you think the owner will not do what you think he ought to, that’s fine. You just need to make that clear.

It’s no good arguing with people for months on end in support of Pardew only to come out and say you never thought he was the right man for the job, but only argued the case because you were second guessing the owner. I don’t know how you can second guess the owner anyway.

  45. Assuming we are playing next season in the EPL, regarding the issue of players wanting away, I honestly cannot see Tim Krul falling in the category of want-away players. I genuinely think he is committed to the cause. The lad grew up on the Tyne, and I get the impression he is a steady lad and loves it here.

The new French imports are another kettle of fish, and to be honest this comes with the turf. The Frenchies I have had to deal with invariably are not too keen on mediocracy. If the Toon cannot match the ambition of players who want to achieve things, then with the best will in the world the players will want to seek something better. The only thing the toon have in their favour is to throw loads of money at the players to try and keep them at the toon. Any player with ambition would look at what is happening at the toon and start to have second thoughts. We would do the same surely..

Llambias probably bases his whole sales concept on bringing in players, getting 2 / 3 years out of them, then selling them on at a profit. If you believe the media Mbwia has pretty much admitted so…and the toon is just seen as an acclimatisation post on the move to bigger and better things.

Not nice for the fans of course, but that’s the facts I’m afraid, always has been.

I reckon we’ll wait a long time to enjoy such a successful season as our top 5 finish. There will be so much turbulence surrounding the toon this summer, players coming and going, all being led by a manager who also has taken a severe slap in the chops, and who also has to prove he has what it takes.

      (Quote)

  46. @Stardy
I don’t believe 2M is a huge amount if we are looking at comparative clubs looking at Europe, but in his appointments since he’s shown that he appoints managers that will first and foremost listen to him and toe the line, whether that is enough to deter a decent manager I don’t know, but coupled with a strict transfer policy, and below average wage I think it limits us.
So yes, that particular assumption hasn’t got the best foundations.
    @B&B
Are you still going on? I’m sure Troy has made it clear that he would like Ashley to sign a manager with European experience on a European wage. Hasn’t he?

  53. Strumpo – I have given the manager as much time as I think a man with his performances deserves. I called for him to be sacked after the Liverpool game. I still want him sacked now.

The next step has already started. People on here have given their opinions on who should be the next man for the job or set out the criteria, if not naming names. Thyey should continue to urge Ashley to make the right decision. If he doesn’t listen and show he’s learnt, Ashley then becomes the problem. As I have said consistently, I’ve always been happy with two steps forwards and one step back.

You’ve only got yourself to blame if you voice your opinions to Ashley by second guessing him and you end up with the type of person who you thought you’d end up with. That’s convoluted but that’s how your approach is.

I find that post hypocritical as this was the foundation of your fall out with Troy and Big D. You said Pards you thought Pards was poor, could get us relegated but refused to be drawn on whether Ashley should sack him?

At no point did you say you wanted Ashley to sack Pards – you only said he deserved a chance and ultimately Ashley would make the call,

You: Yes, there’s better right backs out there, whether or not we get when is neither here nor there.
Me: “second guessing” No, I don’t believe Ashley will replace him with someone as capable, he’s not amazing, but for the wages he’s on he’s the best back up we could hope for.
Which one is more logical? I’m using reasoning, your using pure reactionary thoughts that have no basis on future possibilities. You must be fucking terrible at chess.

      (Quote)

  64. Stardy @ 362 No hypocrisy, fella.

I have said from the start I don’t believe Pardew’s the right man for the job. However, every man deserves a chance. Any manager should be given at least three years to be fair to him, unless he is going to take you down and you know it. That’s why I don’t give him too much credit for his fifth place finish. If he had finished fifth bottom, he would have said you can’t judge me on the first season and he’d have been right.

You can’t get on a manager’s case until you see what unfolds. I have continued to criticise Pardew for months based on every performance and argue with others who I thought believed he was the right man for the job.

I seriously feared in November he would take us down when the usual names were backing him at every opportunity. I thought it was sensible to wait until January to see whether we would get re-inforcements to answer his “injuries” excuses and to get us away from relegation worries.

oAfter the influx of talent that everyone was creaming over and drawing up their ideal line ups, I thought that only a buffon could keep us down there. It soon became apparent that I was wrong and I had given Pardew more credit than he deserved.

I would have liked to give him a bit longer as he hasn’t had three years, but I’ve always said that’s not an option and he needs to be ditched if at the end we’re under serious threat. I have been consistent thoughout.

I have never refused to be drawn on whether Ashley should sack him so I suggest you provide a quote to support that statement. I refused to be drawn on naming a replacement and that was the argument with Troy and Dave. That was silly argument that they harrassed me for weeks over as a diversionary tactic. The bully boys would not accept my very simple and reasonable explanation on that. They still won’t. I’d argue that one with them now, but Dave’s not up for it.
