I’m feeling…. Glad it’s over! Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal

No farewell victory for Harps
No farewell victory for Harps
Well I don’t think I’ve actually been as glad to see the end of a football season as what I am right now.

Even after relegation I had an urge to look forward to what awaited us in the Championship, but right now I can’t even bear thinking about next term.

Many things need to change, whether it be in terms of managerial personnel, playing staff, or the way they work together and the form they collectively create. Whatever ‘it’ is ‘it’ needs to change or else we’re just going to waste next season as well. Bowing out with a whimper after recent home troubles against Champions League qualifying Arsenal hasn’t helped matters much either.

Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t exactly much shame in that these days and Arsenal away from home aren’t the softies they used to be. There is a reason why they have the best away defensive record in the league, but the truth is that particular record was rarely under threat aside from a few half-chances sporadically placed throughout the match.

I don’t even think we played that badly and even thought that Laurent Koscielny’s 52nd minute winner was a tad fortunate on a number of levels, but it was our lack of intent that annoyed me the most. Granted we had literally nothing to play for as any relegation concerns had been allayed by ourselves last weekend, but after two home defeats on the spin I’d have liked us to avoid a third one, as obvious as that seems.

Alas it wasn’t to be and now we’ll undoubtedly be confronted with a summer rife with rumours of one form or another. What fun that will be.

I’m trying to think of positives from this season and I’m struggling. At a push we finished above Sunderland and the second coming of Jesus, or Paulo Di Canio as he is perhaps more commonly known, but that is a minor consolation considering that same team beat us 3-0 on our own pitch just a few weeks ago. The Chelsea game perhaps? Reaching the Europa League Quarter Final?

I’m sorry that this isn’t much a match review, but there wasn’t an awful lot to write about really so I’ve gone on a rant about our season instead. For that I do apologise and I hope I don’t end up doing the same next season!

Howay the lads!

  1. Here in Germany they blather on about the “turn over phase”, the seconds when the attacking team lose the ball, and the defending team have the posession. Almost all German teams react as fast as flock, and realising there is space behind the opponents run like flock at high tempo and try and take advantage of the numbers and balance to launch a counter attack.

Take a look at how long it takes wor lot to get the fuking ball under control. We also don’t have the athletic ability to take advantage of this so we give the ball to Jonas, who gives it the old slow slow quick quick slow, and allows the opponents to regroup. Pish poor really. We could try playing the Alien on the right wing, at least he can attack at speed ffs..

  2. Munich-exactly mate, bang on. He is capable of good tackling no doubt, but I am always nervous with him, there is always that petulance in him that will see him leave a foot in on a player if he’s not having a good day. The foul was completely avoidable, just stand off him and pressure him. But no, he is clearly good mates with Debuchy for a reason, they practice comparing their tackles in training 😉

Anita was great, displayed far more energy than cabs or tiote has this season and showed us what we’ve been missing in the middle. Wouldn’t mind seeing him alongside Sissoko..

Na, I’m 30 this year so I’m a convert of the Kevin Keegan era. Simply because I got so excited watching the football that was played.
I used to enjoy watching Blackburn too because of a certain Alan Shearer. With Newcastle I loved Beardsley.

Then when Shearer signed for Newcastle it was my favourite player joining my favourite team. Alwayed followed and love the Geordie culture. So when Geordieshore started I wanted to show my girlfriend a bit of the city!

I wanted to cringe, when I saw how the lads dressed like girls and the girls acted like tramps. But I do realise its not a true reflection of culture. More of a sad state of how the world is changing. Its just as bad over here.
With all the young boys wearing their bloody hair in a mullet shaved on the sides and then doing ridiculous dances where they look like they are iceskating on a the spot. They spend more time in the mirror than the girls do!

But maybe I’m just old school. I like men to be men 😆

My girlfriend loves it! And I have to admit. I’m like one of those husbands who bitches and moans when the soapies are on because my lass wants to watch it, and I find myself getting hooked on it too, even though its the biggest shower of **** on television.

I make her watch our shitty football team, which is probably less entertaining lately, so I can’t complain really 😉

Funny thing is having supported Newcastle for nearly 20 years she still understands the accent better than I do. I can’t make out what the hell they are saying half the time.

And why do they always say “us” instead of “me” or “I”…

Do all Geordies say “us” to describe the singular first person? And who is this Craig guy that everyone enjoys? Also, is “fanny” a synonym for girls? haha…

  12. Newkie, Cabaye’s return per game is better than HBA’s this season. I’ll grant that he had a cracker last season, but the standard on this blog seems to be that last season we were lucky, hadn’t been found out, etc. So, by the same standards, HBA’s luck has been used up and teams have gotten in the habit of double-marking him.

“Better goals” is pretty much irrelevant, and “from nothing” doesn’t much help compared to Cabaye, who develops the situations in which goals become likely. Really, these comments are more about taste (what kind of player you enjoy watching) than which player is better in terms of winning games.

MM who wound you up mate 😕 I will say that that is one of the things that really grates me on here at times, when you get some that talk down to you and try to treat you like ****, because they are behind a screen.
Even we have had some heated debates but its never went to far and we never throw insults at eachother why 😕 I like to think that its because we have a bit of respect.
The other thing that is starting to get really annoying is when some come on here for what it seems like a deliberate act of just trying to rile certain people up to get them to fight back and in the process make the blog a no go zone for some bloggers.
Yeah there is time that a debate will get heated and my answer to others is to just crack on and work their way round it.
But when imo some are continually trying to start an argument with others and when it doesnt work they will try to snipe at them mock them etc its not on and others should have to put up with that ****.
Rant over so can we all agree to disagree and keep it civil and show a tad of respect 😉

End of the day I bet hardly any of us have met its just good to debate people’s opinions. I do think its interesting how we all seem to be in agreement about Pardew though………..

Maybe every has read his comments this morning saying he wish he had Shola available to “add a bit more punch to us” he is absolutely deluded.

Sad thing is he is one of those people that spout so much BS he a actually begins to believe it all.

  22. Considering how much we were struggling to win the high ball, I think Pardew was right to bemoan the lack of Shola. Hopefully we recruit a better tall forward for times when we need that Plan B.

  27. There was zero indication from yesterday that anything will change. My biggest worry is that we will persist with AP, a number of players will look to push through a transfer out of the club (and any player with any ambition likely will as we play the most baffling brand of footie). We will then be left in a position where we not only have to add to the squad but we will be doing major reconstuctive work due to the outgoings. That will set up more excuses for AP and give him until christmas by which time we will likely be languishing quite far down the table. I know it sound excessively doom and gloom but I cant see any other scenario unless somebody or something radically changes which is an unlikely path taking into account all indicators.

You do realise that Long/High Balls have been our Plan A all season (not Plan B). And of course we struggle to win them as our main striker isnt great in the air and is left isolated and alone to battle to win these long balls. Mindless stuff…

How good was Anita yesterday? Obviously not the answer to our lack of players in the box, but I’m pretty sure he sparked every single attack in the second half.

      (Quote)

  36. Buddy – I know how Pardew sets up his team. 🙂 But there’s a difference between drawing the other team on and looking for a long ball over the defence (which is our main gambit) and putting one into the mix for a big striker when the other team drops deep. Our lack of a good target man has a lot to do with the team’s failure to come from behind.

      (Quote)

  39. W,
The mindless comment was aimed at him and his lack of tactical nous as opposed to you (just in case that was unclear). My worry is that if we get a big centre forward we will resort even further to long balls (and we play the highest amount in the Prem as it is). Why on earth would Santon/HBA/Cabaye/Marv/Cisse etc wanna stay and play in a team that does little else but play long balls. We have sold all our players that suit that system and purchased players that suit a completely different system yet we have kept with that system. You couldnt make it up if you tried

      (Quote)

  40. Wellington,
Do you think Carroll and Cisse would make a good combination up front with Ben Arfa playing in the hole behind them?

My problem is that no matter how highly I rate Ben Arfa as a player, I’m not sure he fits into the team dynamic. The thing is he is the one player that can create a goal out of absolutely nothing all on his own.

      (Quote)

  41. JJ…if you act like those lot you defo won’t fit into Geordie culture…Ice and Big Dave will love you to bits though 😆

Whey, much as that was a **** season and my reservations about Pards, roll on next season…missing the footy already 😥

      (Quote)

  42. Big Papa my views on Pards is I could write a list aslong as your arm of the things I dont like about him.
But I dont believe Jabba will get shot of him or bring a better man in.
So because of that I haven’t been wasting my time in the Pards is **** debate.
He has had 1 good season and 1 **** one so hopefully next will be a decent one

  43. Big Dave loves the debate. Just don’t ever call him Irish.

I did once, but I think I got away with it…

      (Quote)

  44. Buddy,
That is my arguement. We have wonderfully gifted technical players.

But if we insist on keeping Pards and he refuses to change his style. then we may as well get rid of the likes of Ben Arfa and Marvaux because their ablities and strengths are not being played to.

Rather get good players that would suit his direct tactics.

      (Quote)

  45. Munich – 😀 It’s way up there, but I think I’ll get a labcoat printed up instead. 😉

Buddy – depends on what role they’ve been signed to fulfill. If they’re coming in to replace Cisse, then it would be silly not to play direct – and we might as well move on HBA to replace him with a quick wide forward. If the target man comes in to play as a sub or option, then I don’t think it’ll trouble most of our players. Cabaye isn’t going to mind either way – his long passing is excellent and he plays more long balls than any of our other outfield players.

JJ – it’s be very Italian. Depends on what we’re playing behind those three – 3-4-1-2 isn’t going to work without signing another good central defender and will create headaches in the wingback roles. But I don’t think Carroll is coming back.

      (Quote)

  46. JJ you mustnt have loved Hughes that much if you thought he was Irish .
Oh and im not that old not when compared to Ice or Richie

      (Quote)

  47. JJ,
I would rather we just got rid of AP rather than becoming an ineffective version of Stoke and have to listen to the utter ***** that he spews. But to keep AP and to continue signing the type of players we are is crazy. Whilst we are signing good players there is no consistency, as we are constantly leaving ourselves short in certain positions. I, for one, am very worried about this summer.

    Wellington,
Does Cabaye strike you as a player who is happy? To my eye he looks quite the opposite, and I can see exactly why. These talented & technical players are being sold a lie by a dinosaur of a coach

Do you believe there is a mismatch between the players Carr is identifying as NUFC type players – ie Players Carr thinks can push us to the next level – and Alan Parpoo’s style of play?

If you believe there is a mismatch – who should go in your opinion. Pooey or Carr?
