Is it too late to be playing transfer games?

Too late for playing games?
Too late for playing games?
So once again Newcastle go after a player only for a deal between ourselves and the current club of a player to seem beyond reach.

This time it’s Bafetimbi Gomis that we’re unable to strike a deal for according to widespread reports in the press.

Am I concerned? Yes and no. One one hand we’ve seen this before with other players who we’ve been interested in. We won’t be bullied into paying more, things go quiet and we end up with the player in question at some point in the future, so in that sense I’m almost convinced this is just all part of the game between Newcastle and Lyon and wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t the last we heard about Gomis this summer.

On the other hand, as commendable as our stance on transfers is from time to time, the fact remains that time is running out in the transfer market and whilst there is still a month to go until the window ‘slams’ (it always slams, never closes gently or anything like that!) shut the season draws ever closer and we’re losing a chance to get any new players bedded in before the big kick-off in just under three weeks time.

The difference in sums we’re talking about is probably in the region of a couple of million quid, which is a lot to you and me but it’s peanuts in terms of Premier League football. Is it not worth perhaps just saying, due to sheer desperation, that we should take a hit on this one and stop relatively splitting hairs over a transfer fee?

I’m sure a few more bob won’t push us over the precipice and into financial ruin. Say what you like about Ashley but he wouldn’t let that happen which is some comfort at least. Sometimes though you can’t have everything your own way and you need take a bit of a punt, which is something Newcastle seemingly don’t like doing when it comes to transfers.

Going back to what I said at the start, I’m almost certain that this won’t be the last we hear of Gomis in this transfer window and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if we saw him added to the squad before the end of the transfer window, but I just feel that United are leaing it late in the day to be playing these kind of transfer games.

Anyone agree?

  1. If Ryder’s info is correct, (big if) above, that ain’t about wages, it would seem.

  3. Can’t read much into the match based on text reports but sounds like Dummett has had a good game, can he ever step up though? 😕

  4. According to Sky Sports News pundit Jamie Redknapp. Loïc Remy to Newcastle (season long loan) is a DONE deal and is completed!!!

????? im sure there must be something in it as he would have been told by his Dad

  5. Dave, I keep looking at Newsnow for that story, but I haven’t seen it. (won’t give Sky the clicks…) so wondering if it’s a hoax or real.

  6. DAVE go on news now site and go on THE MAG site, there is a bid interview with JOEY about toon, think you will like it,cannot copy and paste on this thing lol

  7. Ditto, Dave, I hate ’em too, but in a pinch.

Still no confirmation that I’ve seen but lots of people recycling that rumor.

Hopefully it’s true, but I have my doubts… looks like the guy who tweeted that is trying to offload a couple of tickets for the next friendly and is maybe trying to get eyeballs to his feed.

  8. Remy on loan sounds good…given his circumstances I’d be hesitant to actually buy him this summer..

  9. That rumor is flying but I have not seen confirmation. Don’t get your hopes up too high yet, brothers and sisters.

  11. Why do Sky keep asking Pardew about transfers when he has **** all to do with transfers. What a bunch of retards they are. Trying to cause trouble

  12. Mirror: Joe Kinnear hopes to finally end Newcastle’s transfer nightmare when he holds talks with Darren Bent on Wednesday 🙄

I’d personally would be gutted if we went from Gomis to Remy then ended up paying 6mil for Bent.

but.. it is in the Mirror.. Phew! 😆

  13. I don’t believe the Bent thing at all tbh.
    1) Age
    2) Wages
    3) Position
If we bought Bent, it would confirm that Pardew wants to play with 1 up top as there is NO way Bent and Cisse could play together. We would effectively be carrying two players, as neither are going to bring a huge amount if they aren’t scoring.
I just can’t see us then paying Bent the wages he wants, if we know he is going to be on the bench for much of the time.

  14. Alan Pardew insists he is not concerned by the lack of new arrivals under director of football Joe Kinnear. He told Sky Sports News: “I’m not frustrated. I have to work with the players we’ve got, I have a good squad of players, and I have no problem starting the season with the group we’ve got. 🙄

  15. I see the cliche spinners are back in force. 🙄 The bandwagon spruikers must be working overtime.

It seems to me that Dummett has been promoted up the pecking order. So I guess that qualifies him for being ‘like a new signing’. A replacement for Simpson/Perch perhaps.

  16. We spent over the odds in January on 5 players, players we were going to get cheaper in the summer. He’ll do it if he needs to, but he’s going to bargain the hell out of a deal first.

As always, judge at the end of the window. All very well wanting players in early but sometimes it is just not possible, pay a couple of million over the top on a few players, and that quickly becomes a 10 million pound player.

The bigger issue is not spending the big money the TV deal is creating, that is more representative of our ambition or our owners desire to recoup his investment.

But, reckon we have not a bad squad, need a couple of strikers and a game plan that doesn’t just involve get the ball to the wings and punting it into the box.

One thing is for sure from Spurs down this league has got a lot more competitive, we could finish anywhere from 6th to 16th again (hopefully not below). Personally, I think we are going to have a good season, but that is just inbred. 😎

  21. I’m starting to think we won’t actually get anyone at all ,what with Pards already saying he’s happy to go into the season with the squad he has (where have we heard that before) yes well good luck with that Alan ,as it worked out so well last summer didn’t it ,oh yes and we are even lighter on numbers now.
I know he has to big up the squad but if it were me I would be making a big noise about being too light in numbers and putting real pressure on the owner and JFK ,what’s the worst that can happen ,the sack ,well fine pay up and he goes.

  26. A quote from Sir Bobby Robson that we all could do to remember from time to time.

“What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get out clauses or the marketing departments or executive boxes. It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city”

Do you get that Ashley ,do you really get it ?

  28. We looked decent last night to be fair, and were missing the likes of Cabaye, Sissoko and Marv.
I do think we need 1 or 2 CFs, a wide man and maybe cover at right back.
But in terms of what Pardew is saying, the season starts before the window closes. So when he says he doesn’t mind starting with the squad he has – that’s not him saying he doesn’t want players in before it closes though.

I really hope he sticks with giving the likes of Dummett and Vukic and the younger lads a crack when the season kicks off though

      (Quote)

  29. Georgio – god no mate!. They still have alot of developing to do, but look decent when they play – subs and cup games I mean.
Against City (based on Krul not being fit) I’d go with:

    —————— Elliott —————-
    Debuchy – Colo – Mapou – Santon
    — Cabaye — Sissoko — Anita —
    —————- Ben Arfa ————–
    ——— Cisse —— Gouffran ——–

I think Cabs, Siss and Ani are better on the ball than Tiote so would be better offensively. But I think we look a better shape defensively with 3 in front of the back 4, but all 3 are comfortable pushing up the field when we have the ball as well, and Debs and Santa push forward as well.
I do think that Cisse is less isolated playing at formation as well.
But with all that said, I fully expect 4-2-3-1 with Jonas, Tiote and Saylor in the team 🙄 😆

  30. Troy – as much as I can’t stand Joey Barton, I can well believe what he’s saying.
I don’t have a problem with players not getting bonuses – particularly the way they were playing at the time, and did the team deserve bonuses last season?! – not feckin likely!.
But if MA tried to force Barton into a ***** contract coz he was in the nick, then that is bad craic.

I agree with him that they stiffed Hoots and never fully got behind him – and I also agree that they are CRETINS! 😆

      (Quote)

  31. Sharpy @202 – That would be my team too except I’d play Cabaye as holding midfielder (he just hasn’t got the legs for box to box) with Siss and Anita either side (who do have the legs). Cabaye’s a really good passer, long or short, ideal for the sort of role Carrick played at Man U last season.

  35. HELLO well all i can say is Big Dave said he watched a interview with Jamie last night and he said “deal was done with toon”on a one yr loan deal see @156

      (Quote)

  36. Ice ,Yeah I seen W.Ham have bid a straight £6m for Remy 🙄 If he goes to them that’s twice he’s overlooked us 😳 😆

      (Quote)

  37. Ice – ‘Arry does have the wham links, and Remy and his missus could stay in London – but one thing we know with Remy is that nowt is ever certain.
The delay may well be QPR working on his replacement.

Don’t wish too hard about Bent mate, he may well be our only option the way things are going! 🙄

I think my problem now is that regardless who it is brought in I’m gonna be more relieved that pleased or excited by it. Even if we get 2 CFs, I know plenty on here will be chuffed and will say its a success and all that. But for me, we’ve had plenty of time, opportunity and funds to get a winger and defender in. Like I said earlier, we aren’t miles away from have a really strong squad, so windows like this are just a huge missed opportunity IMO

      (Quote)

  38. I’d be canny pissed off if Wham end up getting Carroll and Remy the summer after claiming to be so skint to get the Olympic Stadium if I’m honest.

  40. BD – switch that mighty to deranged! All this bloody transfer talk, it’s always the same. Remember though 2 years ago Ba, Cabaye, Marv, Obertan arrived as if by magic. No links, no interviews. I know it’s clinging to hopes but that’s what fans do.

Aulas rules out #OM: “Gomis asked for €400k/m at #NUFC, OM can’t give that. So no chance. Transfer price…is €10m, doubt OM have that”
Latest from Lyon chairman. That is £80k a week that Gomis is asking for according to Aulas which we would never go for as he would be the highest paid at the club and he is not even currently in the France squad.
