Game On! Newcastle v West Ham

Game on at SJP!
Game on at SJP!
It feels strange saying this, but to me this actually feels like our first game of the season.

Playing away as an opener isn’t great and when it’s against a team like Manchester City it kind of leaves you a bit feeling flat, but it’s done now and hopefully our season can start now.

The visitors are West Ham United who have strong ex-Newcastle connections and no doubt a point to prove once more. Kevin Nolan bagged the winner for his current employers last term so a repeat of that will need to be avoided, as will Sam Allardyce extending his unbeaten run as a manager against us ever since he was removed from the managerial hotseat at St James’ Park. Another former Mag, Andy Carroll, will have to wait to face us.

I can’t stress the importance of getting a win today. Being bottom of the table, even after only one game, isn’t nice so we need to get away from that. Another important factor is the level of performance which needs to be greatly improved if we are to improve this season.

The game is not being shown live here in the UK but it is being broadcast throughout the world on various overseas TV channels so there is a chance a stream could be available. As usual, should you happen to find one then please share it with your fellow NUFC fans by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will be added into the article around one hour before kick-off and will be provided by Big Dave as I’m at work unfortunately, which might actually be a good thing as we always seem to do quite well when I’m not watching.

So here we go. The first game at St James’ Park for the season. What will it bring? Will it allow a brief ray of sunlight to break through the gloom surrounding United at the moment? Or will those clouds darken still further?

Howay the lads!

  1. MM @ 442 Marveaux was on the whole was average but most of the team was too . Anita for me had his best game since he came and Krul did everything that was asked of him , HBA infuriated me . As skilful as he is , he should sometimes look to pass instead of thinking he is Messi and Maradonna and take on the whole of the opposing team just to fire blanks .

  2. that’s what my next article says mate, maybe our players were picked up ‘cheap’ becasue that’s exactly what they are worth? Just the great Pardew mouthpiece conning us into believeing we have got a Rolex for a tenner….

  3. On a different subject, or maybe I am just too docile and have forgotten the answer… Could someone explain the reasoning behind players being offered, or in fact signing 5 year deals, when they have no intention of seeing them through ?

What is likely to happen with Cabaye ? He is on a long term contract at the toon. The toon “don’t want to sell him”, but will take 25 mill for him, he wants to leave, but the buying club will only pay 10 mill for him. The interested club tell the toon to flock off. The toon tell the club who want to buy him to flock off. Cabaye is stuck in the middle. He gets a serious hump on…next year is World Cup year and he wants to make the final squad.
Where does this all leave the toon, and how does Cabaye react if he has to sit tight at the toon ? There again it probably won’t get that far and Ashley will be stuffing the quids under his mattress 👿 👿 👿

  4. MM Is it depreciation? Example buy a player for £10m on a 5yr contract his book value drops by £2m per year. So selling after 3 yrs anything above £4m is a profit. Also with 2 yrs left on his contract he still has a resale value.

Shorted contracts means that depreciation is higher, but the window of opportunity to sell for a profit is smaller. so a 3yr contract after 1 yr he is worth £6.67m hard to make a profit, after 2 yrs he is only worth £3.3m and he is into his final yr of his contract and hence with little resale value.

  6. Shamrock agree it’s painful at times but I can’t help myself and Jabba knows that most of us are the same no matter what he inflicts on us.

  7. Munich – What don’t you understand about FFP? Clubs are allowed to lose a certain amount of money over a three year period – clubs do not have to make a profit every year. So when NUFC say we want to comply with FFP they are complying to the absolute max. It is clear, the reason we are not spending the extra revenue we have generated is because Ashley is taking his loan back. Last year it was £11m (as per the accounts) and this year he is due to take £18m back (again, as per the accounts) and this money could have been invested in the team. How good a player or three does £29m buy you? We certainly wouldn’t be struggling like this.

The fact that Ashley is generally the only owner in the world who bought a club, lent it money and then started to take that money back to the detriment of the club. In fact I reckon Ashley is the only new generation of owners of any football club anywhere in the world who is taking money out of their club. But let’s not be surprised, this will have been planned now for 3 or 4 years.

Ashley wants out, but he realises he can’t get enough from a buyer that will hive him his money back, the only way he can do that is to take it out of the club and hope the team have enough to stay up at the same time. Gamble, but that’s what he does.

  8. Shamrock@452, absolutely spot on there mate. That’s been my thinking for a while. Coupled with a manager who can’t reach the players…
You only need to look at Pardew’s comments. He actually believes what he says abput Cabaye, Shola, Tiote et al. It looks as if both players and manager have been found wanting lately.

I agree with Kimtoon, if we continue to play like this we will go down.
Cardiff don’t appear to be rolling over agains Man City, that’s for sure.

We have so many players who are off the pace at the moment, and have been for a long time. However he wants to dress up the situation, this is his team, and he takes the rap for the ineptness of the bunch.

  9. Pards should feel utterly ashamed of what we did against City after watching Cardiff today ,there is no excuse for not getting in City’s faces .Yes we may of lost anyway but we could of held our heads up at least .Our capitulation was embarrassing and unbefitting of the Newcastle way , Pards has turned us into shot shy *******. 👿

      (Quote)

  10. Stuart79@460, that’s more like it mate 😆
I admitted as much that I didn’t understand the FFP issue, now you have clarified part of it for me. I live abroad mate, and don’t have the benefit of cracking on with toon fans in the flesh on a regular basis, and exchanging opinions and becoming all enlightened.

To answer you’re direct supposition…How good a player or three does £29m buy you? …We could without doubt strengthen the team, and will need to otherwise we will go down.

I’ve also said all along that Ashley is only interested in pulling money OUT of the club, and just doing enough to remain in the EPL and take the Sky money.

  11. I was not one of those people. I think Cisse is lacking in a lot of elements of his game. In Cisse’s defence though, it’s hard to put a shot away when you are up front on your own with no service.

  12. Stuart79@460.

Munich – What don’t you understand about FFP? Clubs are allowed to lose a certain amount of money over a three year period – clubs do not have to make a profit every year.

I would appreciate it how the likes of Chelsea and Man City make this work, when they have astronomical wage bills ? Or doesn’t the wage bill come into it ?

These are the bits which I don’t understand. Throw in the fact that we seem to behave like paupers in the most high profile league in the world, with huge amounts of money being invested, and I can’t seem to get my head around the whole issue.

      (Quote)

  13. Stuart,
That’s exactly my opinion of what he’s going too.

We simply won’t see players brought in unless someone is sold at a big profit. Even then our net spent will be 5mil at best.

He’ll do it until he gets his entire loan back and then he’ll look to sell.

The only time he’ll invest (like in January) is if relegation is a REAL threat.

So we’re stuck with this **** for at least three/four more years.

  14. I still feel like the only one pointing out a major flaw in our plan – Graham Carr.

Let’s be HONEST and review all the signings since he became our major scout – how many have actually been a roaring success that no one knew about already?

Demba Ba was obvious from what he did with West Ham, Cisse was known to a lot of people, Tiote was a 18 month wonder, Cabaye is a one season wonder, Debuchy is ****, all the youngsters we’ve signed have been loaned out or sold already.

Can only think of Santon who clearly has potential to go beyond us as better clubs and football minds have said the sky is the limit for him. Anita is another one who has so little time we still cannot judge him.

Graham Carr is proving another failure locked into an 8 year contract.

  15. Shamrock,
In any of our strikers defense. Its hard to score goals when absolutely zero chances are created for you to score in almost three games.

  16. Funky Jesus,

Don’t even begin to blame the players. Messi would look **** under the tactics Pardew implements.

      (Quote)

  17. If Pardew was made manager of Barcelona, he’d still have them trying to play like Stoke. He is absolutely clueless.

He keeps calling us “great fans” but if he loved us so much he would **** off, because nobody wants him here.

  18. The problem when you watch Newcastle going forward is that you seldomnly get out of your seat because we are so pish poor offensively.
Swansea, Spurs, Cardiff, Man City all have a spring in there step going forward. We play the shuffle shuffle purely by chance give it to Ben Arfa style. *****.

  19. Micheal 12 ,Can you not talk about any thing other than how **** you feel Cisse is . 🙄 , Yes some of us thought he would do well back in the middle but we reckoned on him getting a little service . He is a poacher ,he will not seek out the ball and run with it ,that’s no crime plenty of other great past and present players did/do the same . Under a decent coach /manager, team even he will bag plenty . I’m as disappointed as you over his lack of goals but nothing is ever as simple as it seems .

    1.1 Well done Cardiff. 😎

  20. JJ,

It’s a combination of all the ingredients. These players are better than they show but nowhere near as good as they are made out to be.

We’d be firmly mid-table with a good manager, but not a permanent Europe chaser or Champions League dreamer. They aren’t that good and Carr is disgracefully over-rated as a scout.

      (Quote)

  21. we dont play the ball into the box. it beggrs belief really.

watching the PL highlights over the weekend, I have to say how shocking it is that so few players are actually capable of crossing a ball. Not enough hours on the training pitch if you ask me.

Whenever we did manage to put a cross in against westham, we had 1, maybe 2 players in the box absolutely swamped by hammers defenders. what’s the bloody point? we need attcking intent and drive back into the team, or I agree – we are going down. again.

  22. jesus wept, its like dejavue..
It’s the same old guff as last season. Same players, same manager, same old ****.
As for Cisse, I said we got rid of the wrong striker when Ba left. He can score the ‘out of the world’ goals, but strays offside to much and can NOT score the simple tap ins. He may well not be getting ANY service, which is a fair comment, but I am sticking to my guns when I call him a lemon.
The fact is, Pardoom hasn’t got a clue how to set up a team, that plays to his and others strengths.
Pardoom and his useless coaches are the biggest problem, not just the average players.
This is going to be a VERY long season.
    Bafe Gomis wont change anything.
The sooner Pardoom gets the bullet the better.

  23. It is the first time in eight seasons a Barclays Premier League team has not had a single shot on target. 🙄

i wish the season was over already. I was really looking forward to a fresh start with Pardew promising plans were in place to get going early doors.

I cant stand the bloke nu.. 😥

That’s a good result. Keeps us in the bottom 3.
Nowt will change if we come out of it too soon.
The longer we are in the bottom 3 the sooner Pardoom will get the chop.
And for those who say JfK will take over, GOOD. Bring him on. He’ll be back in hospital with another heart attack by xmas. 😛
No way he could handle the flak, and the pressure would push him over the top.
    NEXT ❓

Should be the easiest start to a season for many a yr, But now it looks almost impossible with our current set up. 👿 👿

  28. Alan Pardew has to get this team playing well or we are in big trouble! Cardiff scored from 2 set pieces today, something Pardew is bloody clue less about! Fair play to Cardiff, great win for them. Bloody hell that’s the difference beetween having a good manager! What does he tell our players when there a goal down, just give up ? Pardew has got to go. This league is to much for him. Our next manager got a big mess to clear up

      (Quote)

  29. Well Cardiff showed us how to play Man City today. Two fantastic goals from Campbell from corners. We’ve slipped back into the relegation zone as well. Surely Joe will finally make some moves this week. We’re in desperate need of attacking flair players. We’re not playing like a team at all in attack. Ben Arfa must move and release the ball more often but mainly I blame Pardew for a completely incoherent attack. Something must be done soon. It’s ridiculous after only 2 games but the basic pattern is the same as last season. Poor overall team play and no offense. It can’t continue like this if we’re to have a chance of finishing even mid table.

      (Quote)

  30. STEM – Our next manager doesn’t have to do anything. He just needs to tell the players to go out and play their game.

Anybody blaming Mike Ashley or Graham Carr about the lack of players or the quality of players is talking nonsense!

      (Quote)

  31. Pellegrini must have thought that the Premier League was easy after Monday night; he knows differently know – Sky Sports!

      (Quote)

  32. For those saying Kinnear will take over as manager when pards is sacked ,i say he wont . It will be him in charge but Mick Harford or one of his other ex players be getting the manager’s title , Ashley will not want to take the risk of the fecker getting another hart attack so will put another puppet in the dugout too take the flak and my god the flak this time is going to be fecking enormous . Lamearse once said nobody knows how nasty we can be , in an interview about the board . Well Mr Ashley and Kinnear its getting to the point when you’s are going to feel how nasty a matchday can be at SJP . The Toon Army are getting restless 😉

      (Quote)

  33. It seems fairly clear now (nothing is ever completely clear at our club because of the managements’ bollocks) that Cabaye is refusing to play for us. A horrible position to be in as other clubs (such as Arsenal) will see the situation and make lowball bids. Then what? With Kinnear in charge anything might happen but we could come out of this window in an even weaker position than we’re already in! This comes down to an incompetent owner, hiring an old cadger with no recent experience and a yes man as manager.

      (Quote)

  34. Jonas and Obertan as quality signing’s KK ? Amazing down the flanks as you put it. Our new manager just going to say play and that’s it.

      (Quote)

  35. Axel – you would like to think so, but I’m not so sure there is any appetite for demonstrations and turmoil anymore. There is more just a general feeling of acceptance.
Ashley would love to put all the blame of unrest onto the fans. But I don’t get the feeling it will happen.
We are getting used to bending over and taking it up the tail pipe. 👿

      (Quote)

  36. Good comments Axel @502. The owner is working himself into a very nasty situation mate. What he has tried this summer with Kinnear has been a complete failure so far. And Pardew seems to be floundering as manager. The supporters are losing all patience with the club as can be seen on many websites now. Something positive must happen this week or big trouble is ahead for Pardew, Kinnear, and Ashley.

      (Quote)

  37. Munich – The likes of City get passed FFP because the owner of their club has his own companies sponsor City and they pay a hefty premium for the pleasure. Basically its just a legitimate way of him pouring his millions into the club. After all, who are UEFA to tell Etiyad that they’re paying too much for sponsoring Man City? Its a bit like what Ashley does with Sports Direct, only SD don’t pay a fcking penny!

Chelsea have just worked bloody hard on their world presence – this was possible after their initial success under Ronan and now they genuinely generate huge revenues.

      (Quote)

  38. STEM – Jonas IS a good player. He’s not a winger or a fullback so it’s unfair to say he’s **** when he’s playing out of position.

Obertan is also a good player but seriously lacks confidence. He needs to step down to a lower club, get regular games and play without fear otherwise he’ll end up like Ameobi.

Which of these players do you think are ****:
    Mbiwa
    Santon
    Haidara
    Debuchy
    Anita
    Cabaye
    Sissoko
    Tiote
    Marveaux
    Ben Arfa
    Cisse
    Gouffran
    Remy

      (Quote)

  39. People say we need to play 442 or 433. We can’t play either because:

442 – We don’t have any proper wingers
433 – It’s never really 433 is it? Pardew’s negative tactics mean he wants Ben Arfa and Gouffran to track back leaving Cisse isolated instead of allowing us to counter. 433 is actually 451 without a target man.

Against WHU we had a target man but just being a big guy is surely not enough at this level!

      (Quote)

  40. G2@Axel, well said. Ashley is pushing the fan’s loyalty to far. No one wants to see there team get beat week in, week out. Ashley could sign a couple of players but he sales our best player to do it. Pardew has knocked the morale of the players and fan’s. A new manager has to get results that could take time and by then it could be to late. Harry Rednapp a good experienced manager couldn’t save QPR in his first season. I know Rednapp gets help in transfer windows and is doing well at the moment. It’s shouldn’t be Carr’s responsibility to sign players for the club it should be the managers.

      (Quote)

  41. The players that we have are good enough to finish 7th.

We have a better team than Everton, Swansea, Southampton, Villa etc.

If we’re not getting better results than those teams it’s down to the manager. NOT the Director of Football, NOT the owner, NOT Graham Carr; 100% BLAME TO THE MANAGER.

      (Quote)

  42. Aye STEM @511, I wish I could see the way forward with Ashley at the helm but I can’t mate. He is completely incompetent as a judge of football men so how can we ever improve? If Kinnear can make some positive moves this week that will help but most of the focus will remain on Pardew and our performances on the pitch. Our play must improve by a huge amount or we risk falling too far behind early in the season to reach even mid table by the end. That is what’s facing Ashley now whether he realizes it or not.

      (Quote)

  43. GeordieTwo – He is completely incompetent as a judge of football men.

    That is perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Ashley is actually a good owner but that one sentence perfectly sums up what his problem is. He doesn’t know who to hire or fire. He just has no idea. None. Not one.

If we just had the right manager/backroom none of us would actually have anything to complain about.

      (Quote)

  44. KK@512, I tend to disagree with you there regarding us being better than the clubs you mention.

I’ve seen no sign of that over the last 15 months.

      (Quote)

  45. Many excellent comments on here today. It’s unfortunate if someone from the club isn’t reading many of the blogs. The way forward should be clear by now but what will Ashley actually do? We need a real manager with mainland European experience. Other clubs have managed to do it. Ashley may not understand it yet but he is taking a huge risk with his investment by staying with Pardew. I would sack Kinnear as well if I were him but first of all we need a decent manager. Without that we are sitting ducks this season. Thanks for your comments by the way KK @515.

      (Quote)

  46. It doesn’t matter if we sign Bale, Ronaldo, Messi etc.

The football will not get better.

Most of the players we have (particularly the French players) are more tactically aware than our coaches. How can you expect them to train under instruction from those jokers??

They must think it’s still the 80s & 90s. Classic ‘English’ football.

The problem with the national team isn’t just the **** one dimensional players we produce. It’s the utterly **** coaches we have.

      (Quote)

  47. It’s a very difficult situation Munich mate @517. It’s hard to even assess properly what kind of team we have with Pardew in charge. I still think we have the basis for an excellent, competitive team who could be playing very decent football with a different man in charge. Look how many of our players have come here having played well enough to be internationals. Yet they come to us and within a few games they begin to look terrible. To me the team looks completely lost as a team. That must come down to the manager.

      (Quote)

  48. Munich Mag – You’re right. As a club we’ve been under performing.

Not just the last 15 months. Well before then.

Player for player though we definitely have the best team outside the top 6.

      (Quote)

  49. I don’t see any of the players actually getting a buzz from playing for Pardew.

The gulf is huge between a manager like Mourinho who can get players to sacrifice themselves and Pardew who can get players to wonder ‘why bother?’
