Cup run continues! Newcastle 2-0 Leeds

Cisse finally finds the net
Cisse finally finds the net
I feel slightly embarrassed calling qualifying for the fourth round of the League Cup a “cup run” but all the same we are still in the competition.

Unfortunately as reward for dispatching Leeds United we now have to face Manchester City at St James’ Park at the tail end of October – a fixture that will be sandwiched between a visit to Sunderland and the welcoming of Chelsea to St James’ Park in what could prove to be a defining week for United.

However this about last night so I won’t go too much further into the future and will instead focus on the fairly comfortable victory over Leeds. In truth United were easy winners without playing at their best but the job has been done and with Papiss Cisse finally finding the net I’m hopeful that will give him some confidence to take back into our Premier League fixtures.

Despite the comfortable nature of the victory it was the away side who very nearly drew first blood when Ross McCormack found space in front of goal only to see his lobbed effort glance off the crossbar.

Leeds tried to control the middle of the lark but United eventually started to come to terms with that and started to take control of the game themselves. Fabricio Coloccini saw a header from a Sylvain Marveaux corner cleared off the line before Yoan Gouffran headed wide from a Sammy Ameobi cross. Cheik Tiote saw an effort tipped wide at the near post and Papiss Cisse hit the side netting from a narrow angle after turning the Leeds defence before Matt Smith fired a warning to United, forcing Tim Krul into a save to deny the former Oldham man.

However, on 31 minutes, the home side finally made the breakthrough, and it was a goal that Papiss Cisse and his supporters have been waiting for over 1,000 minutes. Paul Dummett played the ball down the left for Sammy Amoebi who crossed perfectly for Papiss Cisse who nodded home from eight yards without having to break stride. Considering some of the sitters he’s missed in recent weeks, this was a decent finish.

Half-time: Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

It’s fair to say that the second period took a while to get going, but once it did the first real noteworthy action was worth waiting for. Sammy Ameobi played the ball into Yoan Gouffran. With his back towards goal the former Bordeaux man took a touch to get away from defender Scott Wootton before hammering a right-footed shot past Paddy Kenny and into the Gallowgate net from the edge of the penalty area – his first ever goal at St James’ Park.

That goal pretty much killed Leeds and the game as a contest but it the home side could and should have added more through Gabriel Obertan who was set free of the Leeds defence twice only to fluff his lines on both occasions.

Full-time: Newcastle 2-0 Leeds

All in all a comfortable win and a potential banana skin avoided. A decent enough performance without being anything special but it’s job done and we live to fight another day in the Capital One Cup.

Howay the lads!

  1. Yep ,some reward for our efforts Toonsy . Ah well you never know we might win ,gosh that’ll upset the regime like. 😉

  2. It may have been against lower league opposition but I was chuffed with the result last night. Also I’m enjoying the passing football we’re now playing, there was some neat stuff last night and I hope its implemented on Monday night cus its the style that suits our players and Anita controls that style brilliantly.

  3. <<<<<< is not worried about cisse meself give him some proper service hell do the bussiness despite what 1 or 2 of the dumpty crew say,and he aint had proper service in quite a while now.Him and remy off and running now so expect the goals to start flowing

  4. Yep pretty much sums it up for me Toonsy. Nothing special, Sammy and Dummet looked decent again (must be the first time in yonks we have had strength in depth at left back) and hopefully Cisse’s goal will put some confidence in him going in to this weekend.

Goof was workmanlike and took his goal very well-we need strikers who can do something with their back to goal, not that I’m expecting him to do that every week of course but a few more this season would be nice! Marv put in more of a shift than he usually does in cup matches, was hot and cold. The thing that annoys me about him is that if the foul doesn’t go his way he sits on his **** and pulls his socks up for a minute or two rather than leaping up and getting on with it.

  5. With the run of games coming up that was a welcome confidence boost. Didn’t see it but seems it would be churlish to criticise.

  6. Yeah it wasnt the best game in the world but there was some nice footie played, a lot of it has been based around Anita who has to keep his shirt.
Was really glad to see Cisse slot home his header and I hope that will help him get his shooting boots back.

  7. @ PREMANDUP
what i saw of it the players we had on the pitch bossed the game imo, leeds hit the bar early and that was about it for goal threat from them, young sammy was standout for me with his 2 assists

  8. TAE-Another one of their lads had a shot that just went past the post but I agree, otherwise we were fairly comfortable. Sammy did very well, definitely earned his place as an impact sub for us in the league imo. If we went back to 4-4-2 he’d still probably be our best “winger” as well.

  9. After that draw, all I can say is It’s a good job the cup compos aren’t a priority this season
    😉
Good to see Cisse finding the back of the net.
Have to agree that service to him is vital.
Some excellent work put in by Sammy too.
An absolute cracking goal from the Gouf.
Seems like cabaye was no loss. Anita n Cisse did ok

  10. Aussie-the poor dears are crying because we’ll have to put up with more Pardew for a little bit longer 😥

  11. JJ, will be crying into his amarula right now, wishing for injuries and losses to make himself feel better 😛

  12. I don’t like Pardz but there have been signs of improvement this season, so it is steady as it goes at moment for me..

  13. a win is a win two canny goals, just shows the diff between ccc sides and pl sides in defence would not expect a pl defender to be turned so easy for that good 2nd goal but hey ho happy enough 😉

  14. Agree Aussie – we’re not great but better than last season. Sammy has definitely come on a lot. Good game.

  15. Careful now Aussie, he was clearly upset enough that we were winning yesterday to blow a fuse…I’m just going to try and avoid him now, I mean I really cba to get involved in another Bore War.

    😆

      (Quote)

  16. Ice-agree he probably won’t get that space again but it was still well taken I thought, decent touch to set it up. Goof is still a bit of an unknown to Prem defenders so be interesting to see if he can grab a few more goals if he gets a run in the side.

      (Quote)

  17. And I’m off all the booze for a while. Trying to detox 😯

Amarula is a women’s drink anyway. I’m more a Hansa or Castle Lager drinker. Although I have tried your Aussie beers. They all taste like ****. 😉

  18. I only got a buffering screen for half the game. But I was impressed with Anita, Sammy and especially Dummett.

Haidara is going to have a hard time getting back in this team. Think he should go out on loan.

      (Quote)

  19. Leave the beers out of it JJ, your crossing the line fella… keep it personal ok! 👿

      (Quote)

  20. Aussies don’t like crossing the line do they?

They aren’t very good at it in rugby so it must be the fad over there at the moment. Don’t cross the line 😆

  21. JJ@29-Detox? And you call the people on Geordie Shore fairies? Honestly I thought they’d be less effeminate in lion country.

Tatty-Jonas is still injured I think mate. Not that I want to wish injury on anyone but maybe a set back or two wouldn’t hurt the side currently 😕

  22. Aussie… 😆 Give him time, he’ll work it out 😉

Good win, it might be against lower league opposition but that’s who normally knock us out of cups. We’re through and that’s all that matters and well done Cisse, there are no easy goals when your confidence is as low as his will have been.

  23. When you consider that there was 5-6 changes last night and the disappointment of the Hull game, I think this was a really good win for us last night.
Hull was a set back but I agree with Andy, it’s lovely to see us playing passing football and I think the 4-3-3 formation certainly allows us to do that. I think the team really lifted themselves after the disappointing Hull game and what was hugely pleasing for me was that there are players in our squad that are knocking at the door.
Dummett looks so solid in that left back position and you’d never know he is so young in experience watching him.
Sammy looks to be developing really well and is taking his opportunity to show us what he can do. He showed some very good decision making last night, particularly the early ball in for Cisses goal rather than trying to take it to the byline or beat the defender. Very promising.
Gouffran stood out for me last night as well, aside from his well taken goal, he ran the line well I thought.
But the stand out player for me at the moment is Anita. The lad rarely puts a foot wrong for me. He doesn’t pull up trees in there but IMO he’s a big reason why the passing game works. He seems to know where all of his team mates are around him before he receives the ball and stays cool and calm and generally picks the right pass to move things along for us. He isn’t the flair player people love to watch and write about, but at the moment he’d be the first name on my team sheet.

  24. Newkie,
Doctors orders. Apparently my liver is working overtime 😐

But I’ve embraced the change. I’m going for my spray tan, eye brow twease and crack wax tomorrow. 😉

By then, I’ll almost be full on Geordie.

  25. JJ 😆

You’ll look good enough and know enough about football to start passing off as Aussie’s wife soon  😆

      (Quote)

  26. JJ-Well if you manage to actually become his wife he’ll probably start ignoring you. That’s how Richie explained marriage to me anyway 😀

      (Quote)

  27. Newkie…She doesn’t ignore me, she always listens intently to my suggestions…then ignores them and tells me what’s “actually” going to happen 😉

      (Quote)

  28. JJ @ 50, i would come back with a witty post to that remark but you would take to long to actually get it 😛 😆
Newkie, my wife told me to tell you to “f*ck off”
I personally wouldn’t use that kind of language, I’m just passing on the message.. 😎

  29. Aussie 😆

I do appologise, I didn’t want to be harsh to anyone’s other half here, particularly not yours. Tell her I’ll bring flowers along with the milk on Saturday 😉

    http://hereisthecity.com/2013/09/26/newcastle-united-yoan-gouffran-leeds-united-goal-celebration/

This is the kind of character we need in the squad. We really need to make sure Bigi reaches his potential-first team games are just getting further away from him at the moment, if we’re developing players in the cups why not play him? If we’re trying to win them loan him out with a recall clause ffs. Not difficult!

      (Quote)

  31. Newkie there has been very little heard of Bigi this season. Don’t quite understand why Gosling who we’re looking to get rid of, is on there instead of him. He’s a great prospect in my mind, very good passer. Mind you he looked a little lost against Morecambe so maybe that’s it.

      (Quote)

  32. There’s more fucking flirting than footy craic on here today like isn’t there?! 😯 🙄

Newkie – it’s good to here that Bigi has that kind of character about him at such a young age.
If a 19yr old can have such a positive affect on a 27yr old – dare I say he could be a future captain in the making?!, certainly a leader of men with or without the armband.

I think Bigi needs to concentrate on his own game as well though. He certainly has the potential, but he didn’t do much to impress against Morecombe.
If he stays with us this season (ie doesn’t go on loan) I’d have him work closely with Anita and Sissoko. Anita for his passing and ball retention and Sissoko for his power and getting forward.

      (Quote)

  33. Georgio/Sharpy-Agree lads, he did look poor vs Morecombe but it’s been a while since he last played. He seemed to come into the side full of confidence but I think when he got a run in the side (during our injury crisis) and we took a few batterings it set him back a bit.

I don’t mind if Gosling is going to take his squad role but if that’s the case he needs to go on a season long loan, we’ve been useless for years at getting players with potential to make the step up and we really should be addressing it. It’s nice and cheap so I don’t know why Ashley isn’t obsessed with it to be honest

      (Quote)

  34. Sharpy-that’s what I mean though about personality. I mean Cabaye is supposedly our French “general” and yet Goof is being inspired by a 19 year old Burundi from Coventry I mean…but if his game improves (and now he has Anita, Tiote, Sissoko and Cabs to learn from) and his attitude remains maybe he can be a long term solution. Bit early to be talking about it really though-first things first-get him playing!

      (Quote)

  35. Newkie – yeah I agree mate, players like Bigi, Dummett and Sammy are still very young. Whilst they are doing well just now, they need time to develop and build their strength.
The loan spells seem to have done Good, Dummett and Sammy the world of good so maybe it would benefit Bigi as well. That said, I think the fact he had his spell at Coventry certainly gave him that appreciation of what life is like in the lower leagues. He seems to be a very grounded lad.

Theres a kid called Paul Digby at Barnsley just now, 18yr old CM, 6’5ft. He’s early on as well but looks very good. If we could pick him up now for around £1m as well then it would be a very good signing and I think a midfield 3 of Bigi/Digby/Fergie coming through would be very promising.

He and Bigi seem like good lads to have in a squad. Get them playing footy and we are laughing.

  38. I’m seeing a 2-1 win for Everton in me crystal ball unfortunately mates. I’m going for my second correct prediction ever so let’s hope I’m wrong as usual. The cup win was a real spirit lifter so let’s continue with a good league run as well.

  39. Hearing some news out of the Ashley castle. Apparently Mike is planning to trim his toenails for the first time in seven years because he has some female company coming over on the weekend. Good luck to her then.

  41. Watching those clips of Sammy and the performances he’s turned in for us and the England U21s – I feel like I’ve been harsh on him in the past. I feel like I wrote him off without really giving him a chance. I’m gonna get fully behind him now though I think. Go Sammy!! 😆 😆

  43. Let’s see how Sammy progresses this season. He has had some poor turnouts previously. He will need some Prem time as well to really judge him. I like the lad but he has to be more consistent.
