Sticky Toffee Puddings! Everton 3-2 Newcastle

Lukaku celebrates
Lukaku celebrates
Another game, another 3-2 defeat and another defensive horror show ensured United left Merseyside empty handed on Monday night.

An awful firs half performance put the game beyond doubt before the interval although Newcastle very nearly, and against any odds, managed to salvage something from the match.

However if you start a game in the Premier League so poorly and give up three soft goals away from home then you’re going to struggle and ultimately that was our downfall. Alan Pardew will shoulder a lot of the blame but some of the players in that side, especially defensively, should take a good, hard look at themselves and ponder if they are doing even the basics correctly.

The home side grabbed the lead after just five minutes through on-loan Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku who was on hand to apply the finish past Tim Krul who was left with little to no chance of stopping it.

Lukaku had a hand in the second goal also as Fabricio Coloccini and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa seemingly just ran away from the Belgian striker allowing him to tee up Ross Barklay who found the back of the net midway through the first half.

An awful defensive display was rounded off in some style on 37 minutes as Lukaku added a third after a long punt upfield from Tim Howard somehow eluded both Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul allowing the former Anderlecht man the privilege of dispatching the ball into an unguarded net.

Awful. Plain awful. All United could muster in return was a tame effort from Hatem Ben Arfa which Tim Howard comfortably pushed away and in truth the away side could probably count themselves rather fortunate to be just the three goals behind.

Half-time: Everton 3-0 Newcastle

A double change from Alan Pardew saw the hapless Hatem Ben Arfa and miserable Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa replaced by Yohan Cabaye and Mike Williamson respectively, and it was a double substitution which paid almost immediate dividends.

First Yoan Gouffran hit the inside of the post and moments later United managed to end Everton’s defensive robustness and score at Goodison Park in 687 minutes of Premier League action, and it wasn’t a bad goal either from Yohan Cabaye who beat Tim Howard with a screamer from outside the penalty area.

Loic Remy could have added another soon after but he was denied by Phil Jagielka before Cabaye wasted a chance from a free-kick by firing into the wall.

With time running out it looked as though Cabaye’s strike would prove to be merely a consolation, but in the closing seconds of normal time Mathieu Debuchy nodded the ball back to Loic Remy who prodded the ball home to make injury time very interesting indeed.

And the comeback was very nearly complete in stoppage time as Remy collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing just over Tim Howard’s crossbar in what was to be the last real chance of the match.

Full-time: Everton 3-2 Newcastle

As I said at the start, if you give so much away so easily you’ll always struggle and that was the case here. I’m heartened by the second half performance which, in fairness, couldn’t have been any worse than the one witnessed in the first, but ultimately it meant nothing.

Unconfirmed reports surfaced after the match suggesting that Alan Pardew tendered his resignation although I wouldn’t know if it’s true and I very much doubt the people who started it all off know if it’s true either. However, much longer and I don’t think Alan Pardew will get the choice to leave.

Howay the lads!

Everton: Tim Howard, Leighton Baines, Sylvain Distin, Phil Jagielka, Seamus Coleman, Kevin Mirallas, James McCarthy, Gareth Barry, Leon Osman, Ross Barkley, Romelu Lukaku

  2. Santii – I’d like to have seen a CB partnership of Mapou and Caulker. I rate Mapou highly as well and think he’s doing ok but still hasn’t settled fully in yet. But to be fair, this has been his first regular stint in the first team. He’ll be spot on

      (Quote)

  3. Reading all the posts and adding my thoughts the conclusion I have reached is that nobody including the manager has a scooby doo what our best starting line up should be. This hints the players are massively inconsistent and not as good as good as we are led to believe. Take all that on board and we are always going to have poor results and performances. We will get the odd surprise of a win

      (Quote)

  4. It’s really worrying cos we haven’t suffered injuries yet. A defeat at Cardiff and I fear Pards will be gone.

I couldn’t believe Jokey had his initials sewed on his suit jacket. 🙄

  5. Has any player improved under Pardew? Does any player look like he will improve? Take Bigi as an example. He looked an excellent prospect when he came from Derby. Does he look the same now?

Regarding Simpson looking back are we guilty of wearing rose tinted spectacles? I remember a player who gave away many goals by standing off and who spent more time playing the ball backwards than forwards. I have similar memories of Raylor. Far too slow for the Premiership.

  6. I hope Pardew gets the sack because we need someone new to whinge & ***** about!! Its all a bit old hat with Pardz at the moment…

  7. Old Joe, will be a good shout!! He has a soft underbelly that will be just right for sticking with a pitch fork 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  8. All we need is for Pardew to get us playing attractive to the eye, defensively sound, super attacking football with a bunch of highly motivated players playing in their favourite postions week in week out!! 😯

      (Quote)

  9. Troy @ 80 If Pards does get the boot I wonder if many of the fans calling for his head, will get behind JFK and give him their full support

      (Quote)

  10. Dave – Any new manager, including Joe, will get my full support. We all want to see the team performing well. However, as with any job, they need to continue to earn it. Pardew as a man seems alright, but I am very disappointed with him as a manager. He did have my support when he came. I was not a Pardwho? man. I was pleased with his first year but he lost my support midway during last season. I think the automatic choosing of Jonas, who to most fans was clearly off form, did it for me. I questioned his judgement and still do.

      (Quote)

  11. Dave – I know I wouldn’t mate. Joe was brought in as DoF. If Ashley wanted him as manager he would have been totally justified in sacking Pardew at the end of last season and installing Joe then. Joe was meant to be brought in to help Pardew, not replace him.
If that happened then I would feel sorry for Pardew, coz it would then seem all planned out and the summer failings another suggestion that they have been deliberately putting added pressure on Pardew instead of supporting him.

Also, I think there are better managers currently out of work than Joe, so I’d at least want one of them if we weren’t buying one in.

      (Quote)

  12. Well I have always believed that we should get a top manager in, so if that happened I would welcome it.
But for me JFK is not that man and I would say Pards is better but I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

  13. Djebs9 – you don’t actually read what people write mate. You are so blinded by your love of Benny that the second you see someone suggesting he had a bad game you don’t even put up an arguement, you just go on a blind rant and start name calling. Crack on mate, water off a ducks back, but if you ever want an adult chat about it let me know 😉

      (Quote)

  14. Sharpy-That’d be water off a duck’s **** mate. And as for you running an “Adult chat” service well, I thought better of you 😆

      (Quote)

  15. Dave – I heard a radio interview with Steve McClaren yesterday after getting the Derby job. They were asking him about being appointed head coach rather than manager. His response was he really didnt mind. He said it was important to get the right people in to get the best out of the players. He said a club like Derby can’t afford to spend multi millions on players, but get the right coaching staff in place and it will get the most out of the players they have.

That’s absolutely what our mentality should be IMO. We should have a head coach who oversees a goal keeping coach, defensive coach, 2 midfield coaches – defensive and attacking, and an attacking coach.

      (Quote)

  16. Newkie – a man has to make a living somehow mate 😳 😆

Troy – I’m starting to think you’re right mate. Even a foreigner can copy a name correctly 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Bad boy Sharpy, criticising Benny! Seems like the whole team is coming under the cosh for that 1st half. We do have good players but Pardew is bloody ruining the whole thing. His concentration on Baines for example. Sissoko as a no10 or right winger. The guy must wish he’d stayed in France.

Tiote is the first one i’d take out. Didn’t Pardew notice Huddlestone and then Barry dominating midfield. Eating everything up and spraying passes all over. And we get Tiote! Anita can do that job perfectly.

Actually there’s so much wrong at the minute only Pardew can be responsible. Glen Hoddle anyone?

      (Quote)

  18. Read this somewhere else.

OK not many buys in the summer but 6 new signings didn’t just magic themselves here in January. Remy, Cabaye, M’Biwa, Sissoko and Debuchy are half the current French team and looked great before being ”Pardewed”!!

I don’t think it’s just coincidence that so many players are off form and look so thoroughly confused and demotivated. Pardew is a man who preferred Mullins and Harewood to those no hopers Tevez and Mascherano. lol !!! Enough said.

      (Quote)

  19. .. the fuel pump in my car ****** up the other day!! **** you Pardew!! **** you to hell!!

      (Quote)

  20. Georgio – Benny is a magnificent talent, he’s a game changer who can score a goal from nothing. But he’s not a 90mins player, and at the moment we don’t have the strength around him to be able to accommodate such a player IMO.
Rooney is a game changer for Man Utd, can score from nothing, scores freekicks, creates chances for others and has a fantastic range of passing. But more than that he works so hard for the team. He covers so much ground working to win the ball back and how often do you see him making tackles back in the full back position.
I don’t mean to criticise Ben Arfa, he’s a cracking player, and maybe a different manager or better coaching could strengthen the team, maybe Benny needs to work harder, I don’t know. All I know is that lack of effort at times frustrates me.

Tiote for Huddlestone, Shelvey or my preferred option would be Jake Livermore.
I’d love to see us add Finnbogason, Jake Livermore, Sam Byram (or Kyle Naughton) and Tom Ince to our squad.

      (Quote)

  21. Benny needs to work harder… end of story…
Modern football is about being a hard working team player.. if you have some extra flair, you use it but you still do the basic stuff well.. I for one am sick of the excuses being made for Benny. Nobody minds a player losing the ball trying to do something a little special if they work hard to make amends and support their team mates..
Benny needs to told hold his hand up and say that he is not working hard enough!!
For all the good he does, there is twice as much **** that he isn’t doing..
end of rant.. Pardew out!! 👿

      (Quote)

  22. Georgio@96 no offense to you but that post is bollocks. Half the current French team? Sissoko has 8 apps and if you ask me France have better-and even younger midfielders than him such as Pogba. Sagna is a better right back than Debuchy. Benzema has always been overrated but will Remy take his place? Giroud’s possibly- but Nasri and Ribery?

Cabaye is a regular that much is true, but when some people talk about our “full team of internationals” I think they forget many of them don’t play that often-it’s not like before when we used to have like 11 starting internationals and half of them from England.

Are they getting better or worse? There don’t seem to be vast improvements, but if the media and transfer values are any clue then most have improved on what we paid. We (Ashley, Dekka, Fans, Carr) have patted ourselves on the back for securing great talent at cheap rates-or we did after finishing fifth. Perhaps the reality is that we just paid the going rate for players like Tiote, Santon, Cisse, Debuchy… 😕

  23. Aussie – I never know if you are being serious or not mate . But what you wrote about Benny echoes my opinion completely. But I don’t know if you’re saying it to take the **** 😆

  25. Personally I couldn’t give a **** how many international players we have in the team – whatever nationality. I don’t care if they are purple or indigo!
All I ask is that we have 11 players on the pitch giving 100% from kick off to final whistle.

  28. Sharpy, ha ha… Djebs can fire away mate..
Vegas, maybe Newkie was getting a little confused with the england cricket team, with it only being half filled with englishmen 🙂

  29. Well the game on Monday was well and truly one to forget, I’m glad that the lads restored some pride in the second half and almost pulled off an unlikely comeback. A huge shame that our defense lets us down once again but offensively, there were a few positives.

A lot of posts again calling for Pardew to be given the boot, I’m not going to join this view for a number of reasons that people seem to overlook. These are:
    – Pardew at least deserves one more season to prove he has what it takes, this is due to us having one great season and one poor season under his leadership hence its only fair.
    – If Pardew were to be sacked, Kinnear would be next in line to take the job which would spell disaster from the word go. Even if Ashley was not to appoint Kinnear, who else out there could come in and do a better job? Lets face it, Ashley isn’t going to get a proven manager who is already employed leaving us to choose from unemployed rejects…no thanks.
    – I do genuinely believe that Pardew has learned a few lessons from last season in the sense that he is trying to be more positive; he has reinstated a more attacking formation and we always look capable of scoring a goal. He isn’t afraid to make bold decisions such as drop S Taylor, Cisse, substitute Ben Arfa because he isn’t doing his bit defensively etc.

I didn’t see too many complaints after the Villa game or once we saw the starting line up for the Everton game. The players have to shoulder some responsibility such as Mapou, Sissoko, Cisse etc. These are international players with talent and potential in abundance but haven’t performed. We’ve already heard Pardew will ring the changes for Cardiff including in defense, Williamson for me is one of our underrated team members. At least with him we will win a greater percentage of headers and he is no nonsense old fashioned defender; Mapou needs far too much time on the ball.

If we can sort out our defense and leak less goals, I think we’ll do okay. People calling for Pardew to get the chop need to be careful what they wish for, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Apologies again for another long post 🙁

You should all LOVE it! 😀

      (Quote)

  34. Newkie – that post @96. I did say it wasn’t mine (copied and pasted) but there is an element of truth into the players being Pardewed. Most of them looked far worse to me than when we signed them.

I see Benny getting flak for not working back and helping Santon. Bet you’d all like the hard working Jonas instead. Hard to believe Pardew took him off and later brought on Cisse. What an improvement Cisse and Jonas are over HBA!

Our midfield was fine at Villa, the team set up was just right. They had a bad day against Hull so tactical genius Pardew pulls it apart and we end up with Benny off, Sissoko lost on the right wing and Tiote passing square the whole game. Santon was our best player for the first half of last season now he should be replaced by Dummett. We need a settled team game after game with the players in their best positions not this ****! 👿 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  35. Kinnear sticking his fingers up at the fan’s, disgraceful! Ashley just let’s him get away with it, unbelievable ? Still the fan’s turn up every week and let them get away with it.

      (Quote)

  36. Georgio –

“I see Benny getting flak for not working back and helping Santon. Bet you’d all like the hard working Jonas instead”.

No mate, I’d prefer a hard working Ben Arfa!…. Too much to ask like?

      (Quote)

  37. Georgio-Aye that’s why I meant no offense to you. I know what you mean about how they look but I think a lot of it is down to form really. Cabaye improved a lot-pretty sure he said himself-with us first year with us. Then he sulked and slid from what I can see. Tiote went from being valued at 3mil to 20 but has obviously dropped back down massively. Santon also improved with his first season with us, but I don’t think he’s ever been that good at defending. If our other defenders are on form then fair enough he is a great outlet for our side (why he was so good in the first part of last year-because our defence was still fairly decent).-although I disagree he was our best player in the early part-that was definitely Ba.

If Santon is incapable of paying attention then he should be dropped for someone who can, just as Mbiwa or colo should be dropped if we had a good replacement. Just as Cisse should be dropped when others (Remy, Goof) have shown they can do a better job-imo-otherwise what’s the point in a squad?

Ba is one player who came on a lot under Pardew, pity we sold him 😆

      (Quote)

  38. Ben Arfa wants to win the Ballon d’Or. Only the best players in the world win that. The best players in the world also work fucking hard for it in almost every game. Benny still can’t manage that, and it looks more like application than fitness. I don’t think anyone would put Jonas on ahead of him though.

      (Quote)

  39. Newkie – Pardew might! Have you noticed how hard Ronaldo works back or Ginola did, or Robert? Get the best out of the kid not insist he does what he’s poor at.

Sharpy that probably is too much to ask sadly. I’d like him working his socks off but not at the expense of his threat. In that direction Jonas lies.

      (Quote)

  40. Newkie , I’m pretty sure Benny will be sold in jan if any half decent displays are put in as the media always make him our most to be feared player like, they don’t seem to acknowledge any lack of tracking back .
I’m in two minds on the guy tbh , I have always maintained it’s up to defenders to defend and forwards to score and the midfield somewhere in between depending on their particular strengths .Knowing Benny is reluctant to get back on the wing the obvious solution is to play him off the front two imo ,he’s better off being kept forward anyway if you ask me. Why expect someone to track back and stick tackles in if they aren’t capable of it.

      (Quote)

  41. Georgio-Ronaldo doesn’t work hard enough and maybe that’s why he never beats Messi to the award-because Messi always works harder 😉 Although I think at Madrid he works much harder than he ever did at Manure.

As for Robert-Robson slated him for not tracking back. We played attacking football with him but even then he wanted his players to put a shift in and he was right. I agree with you-we need to get the best out of him and imo that isn’t on the wing of a 4-4-2, but whichever position he does play in he’s going to need to put himself about a lot more than he did in the last two games. He has worked hard in the past and said he has learned so why stop now?

If Pardew put jonas as a forward 3 in place of Ben Arfa it would be curtains there and then. I’d probably even cheer Kinnear on myself 😕

      (Quote)

  42. Really don’t understand some of you guys?
You will see next week what will happen in this blog…
Benny will start in the bench against Cardiff.. we will play **** and everyone will ask for Benny to came on..
It’s not about working hard, because i think in terms of miles Benny run as much as other midfielder, but he just doesn’t know how to defend, he has zero abilities for that.

But I don’t know what he was doing wrong in the goals we concede against Everton, If santon needs 3 players to cover for him, fine but at least you must be able to contain one player..
If you watch the game again ( what I did) Coleman was not really dangerous in first half, much more dangerous in second half..because he fears Benny in first half so doesn’t attack so much, second half he was always up in the pitch.
Sissoko, Tiote, Colo, Mbiwa, Santon was the worst players in the pitch first half… but more easy to slate benny for our defensive errors, everyone will accept that..
Sissoko has done nothing all game long and misses all his simple passes. At least Benny when he looses the ball tries something…
But up to you if you prefer just hard worker and don’t like artist in a pitch.
    That’s a vision a football I respect but it’s not mine.

      (Quote)

  43. @Newkie 128

Look to the stats before to speak. Messi works harder than Ronaldo??? are you kidding me..he is better than Ronaldo , but doesn’t work harder.
He is one of the players who run the less in a pitch. He just keeps all his energy to make great acceleration near the goal and is the best finisher all time before the goal.
But last year I saw a stat saying messi walk during 70% of a game.
It’s just simple all other players play for him and so Barcelona can handle him.

      (Quote)

  44. Georgio – I think that is the situation at Chelsea at the moment mate with JM wanting more out of Mata. I’m sure Jose sees that Mata is a huge talent, but he needs more from him.
I don’t think asking him to up his workrate would or should take away from his threat.
The problem at the moment is he’s one dimensional. Teams have done their homework and even Hull were able to contain him.
If he puts the graft in then it may allow Cabaye or Remy to be that threat instead.

3HW – that sounds promising mate, however it would still require Ashley paying out to make Remy a permanent deal

      (Quote)

  45. Kim-that is the issue with MOTD highlights 😀 Benny needs to work hard wherever his position is, if he is lazing about up front then he’s still not doing his all for the side. If he will only work hard up front I’d say that is quite petulant for someone who has been a “winger” all his life. However we need him in the side, so either have players capable of making up for him or put him somewhere else. As it is I think we brought in Tiote alongside Anita to try and get more out of our full backs and Benny on the counter attack, the problem was we didn’t turn the ball over and nobody did any counter attacking, the ball just went in the back of the net whenever they came forward 😆

      (Quote)

  46. Sharpy – he does work harder than before but really Hull stuck 4 players at times on him and it was up to the rest of the players to exploit those gaps elsewhere. I’ll admit he was poor against Everton but by god he wasn’t the only one yet he was the only threat. I’m worried Pardew will just **** the kid off and I won’t be surprised if he drops him for Cardiff. Idiot!

      (Quote)

  47. Well the week just gets better ,Lews just come in from day centre and they report they think he has my stinking cold 🙁 so much for my ocd handwashing routine. 🙄

      (Quote)

  48. Georgio ,that’s a very valid argument ,really if he was pulling 3 to 4 out of position to keep him quiet other players should of really capitalized on those gaps.

      (Quote)

  49. A lot of the news about Pardew being a dead man walking is just stating the obvious as far as I can tell. Even Pardew can tell that our results aren’t good enough and haven’t been for a long time now. It’s horrible watching him squirm after every poor performance though.

      (Quote)

  50. Lots of discussion about how to improve our full back play on other sites as well. So far it hasn’t worked out well. Debuchy has had difficulty adjusting to the Prem and Santon seems to continue to have defensive liabilities. They really don’t attack well either in my view. Most of Santon’s attacks end up in turnovers not shots on goal. He should watch some film of Baines at work. Debuchy is soft on the tackle sometimes then usually gets carded when he goes in hard. He really has been a disappointment as far as crosses are concerned also. Pardew needs a whole new plan for wing play for us. We have a long way to go because teams are feasting on us down our wings.

  51. It’s definitely the season of colds Kimtoon lass. My daughter has just brought one home from school as well. 🙁

      (Quote)

  52. HBA@39-Messi works less now that he is centre forward, but when he was on the wing he worked like a dog, as he did for Argentina. As for the walking, well, yes, centre forwards generally do cover less ground, but the team aren’t really asking him to cover ground any more, now the team cover ground to try and get the best out of him.

I bet he would hassle more than your name sake if he was instructed to 😉

  53. G2 ,aye mate if Lew feels like I felt the first 3 days or so I feel for him .Poor thing can’t blow his nose so everything goes to his chest and overwhelms him ,I really tried to stop him getting it cause it’s gonna be a nightmare ,a simple cold is epic for him 🙁

  58. Zaha looks a class player i havn’t seen to much of him so don’t know how consistent he is. In the last England u21 game he was head and shoulders better than everyone else. (Josh Stone looked cracker as well actually)

Do not believe a thing about that article… There isn’t a single quote from any of his representatives or anyone associated with him..

Its like a game of bingo with journalists they spin once for a club then again for the player and bam they have a story.

Please don’t be so gullible to believe this nonsense people.

  59. Have to agree CC mate @147. I want a very decent manager for us, not some flunky just with us to take some of the heat off Kinnear and Ashley. This is a final chance to get our managerial appointment correct for me. Any more pals and other yes men not welcome.

  60. Aren’t the main attributes Ashley is looking for the following?
    1. Must be a willing sycophant. Spout the same bollocks as the owner and DoF.
    2. Must be willing to frequently kiss the owner’s **** and agree with anything he says.
    3. And most importantly must be willing to work for 50 pounds a week and no paid holiday time.
I’m not cynical. Just telling it as it appears to be with the Pardew hiring. Although even Pards has had a few goes at the owner I have to admit. I think Pardew’s plums are definitely bigger than Ashley’s (like comparing a gorilla’s with a mosquito’s I would think).
