Remy sinks Bluebirds! Cardiff 1-2 Newcastle

Loic Remy struck twice in eight first-half minutes to give United a well deserved victory at Cardiff City yesterday afternoon.

The away side dominated the first period and should have been more than two goals ahead at half-time but a consolation goal from Peter Odemwingie ensured a nervy finish for the Magpies.

Anything less than three points though would have been harsh on Alan Pardew’s side though and they fully deserved their win. It was one of the best performances I’ve seen from a United side for some time, especially in that first-half, and Cardiff just didn’t have an answer for us as we blew them away with attacking intent.

However it was the home side who produced the first chance as Fraizer Campbell got to a long ball before goalkeeper Tim Krul and rounded the keeper only to lose his footing just as he was about to shoot.

From then on though it was all United and David Marshall in the Cardiff goal had to be in hand to deny Loic Remy an opener before defender Andrew Taylor managed to get himself in front of Papiss Cisse’s effort on the rebound. Moments later it was Moussa Sissoko who stung the palms of Marshall with a fierce drive from the edge of the area.

The away side were looking dangerous and once again should have taken the lead after Mathieu Debuchy set up Remy 26 minutes only for the former QPR man to shoot tamely into the arms of Marshall, but just four minutes later Remy wasn’t to be denied as he ran the ball from inside the Newcastle half, cut in onto his right foot and fired low past Marshall into the bottom left corner of the net.

Just eight minutes later and it was 2-0. Yohan Cabaye fed Papiss Cisse who saw his attempt at goal blocked by Marshall only for the rebound to fall to Remy who calmly rolled the ball home from outside the box.

It could have been three moment later as Yohan Cabaye lined up a free kick which looked as though would end up as a cross only to fool everyone and thump an effort off the post which would have left Marshall with no chance had it been a few centimetres to the left. A good half but United had to settle for two at the interval.

Half-time: Cardiff 0-2 Newcastle

Cardiff came back into the game in the second half however and soon reduced the deficit when substitute Jordan Mutch fed Odemwingie inside the box with a clever pass and the striker took the ball round Krul before firing into the net. A couple of minutes later and the home side could have been level as Frazier Campbell shot across the face of goal with Aron Gunnarsson unable to get on the end of it.

But United were still dangerous and could have added a third on the break as Loic Remy played the ball through for Moussa Sissoko who shot straight at David Marshall.

Loic Remy was replaced by Jonas Gutierrez much to the dismay of the away fans but with treatment given to the Frenchman it was soon apparent that the change was forced more than anything. However the Argentine should have added another goal soon after his introduction but his free header went over the crossbar.

Papiss Cisse was denied by Marshall late on and United had strong claims for a penalty waved away after the ball struck Andrew Taylor’s hand but in the end the damage was done in the first half and it’s three points on the board for United who now move into the top ten.

Howay the lads!

  1. There was a mackem on radio newcastle tonight saying he was disappointed with the appointment of Poyet. His suggestion was they should have gone for Benitez or someone similar. The presenters said he had the Napoli job in the summer. The mackem said Sunderland were a bigger club than Napoli and Benitez would have taken the job. What can you say

  2. I’m too far away TLR mate @301. I would if I could and my hope is that it makes a difference and wakes Ashley up. He shouldn’t take the supporters for granted. Their money is their own to spend and it needn’t be on the club. We have power just as he does.

      (Quote)

  3. So Sunderland are bigger than Napoli? Not sure who has the bigger ground but I know who I would rather manage. 🙂

  4. I can see all the reasons for the protest and they are justified but Ashley will not take one bit of notice. It is a shame the majority of fans and the regime are so far apart.
Just hope no idiots young un or old uns make the march look something it isnt

  5. Yes the supporters need to keep things well behaved and organized. Making a point is fine and I think it needs being made in this case. I think the owner is a little too comfortable that the ground will stay full. Not with the dross that has been served up at home this season and last.

  6. G2 I think Ashley is satisfied with Pardew so far this season. 11th in the table and safe from europa league and relegation. He hasn’t spent a penny considering the players his sold. He must be pleased with himself?

      (Quote)

  7. Think about the team’s panic buying in january to avoid relegation or help qualify for a champions league spot. While he seats back and does nothing and he will probably fire Kinnear on the cheap and find some other mug ?

  8. I agree with that eminent philosopher who wrote something @ 269. 😉

I missed the weekend’s game as I was out on the Pacific Ocean, but when I had access to the internet again, the first thing I did was to look up the score – I didn’t go in search of a match report to see how well we played. And let me tell you, I gave a strange woopwoop type of sound at seeing the result. I only gave a smiling nod when I read that we played well.

I’m not phased one bit about no game this weekend … because, woopwoop! (what a strange sound!) the A-league starts. The 6 month off season is finished at last, and I no longer have to suffer the interminable prattle of rugby league and Aussie Rules. I find myself looking forward to the kick off more than I looked forward to the Prem League kick off.

Howay the … err … Caaarn the Roar.

  9. Vegas, I’m looking forward to the a league kick off as well.. the glory finally has a good football playing coach. Carn the Glory!! (Note i used the posh version of caaarn!)
    @240 😉

  10. Hmm, yeah, pity about the squad. 😉

Just been reading about expansion into Asia – the possiblity of Singaporean, Indonesian, Malaysian club sides joining the league. That’d be interesting. Who knows, eventually the the A-league might go worldwide and I’ll finally get to see Brisbane play Newcastle. 😆

  11. 😯 take it easy! 😉 Edwards is blooding a lot of youngsters which is good but it may bite him on the **** results wise. I hope not.. Keep an eye out for Daniel DeSilva, he is going to be a star.. Apparently Everton want him now but he is staying in Oz until he turns 18.
As far as playing in Asia.. Not sure how that is going to work.. The costs involved would be huge. Also the travel is excessive, can you imagine the jet lag for the Phoenix players (not that I really care) flying all the way from NZ!

  12. I don’t know why we don’t use the transporter thing they’ve got on the Enterprise, that looks like a far more efficient way of getting around than an aeroplane.

  13. true but every time they get zapped somewhere, some random tv extra gets killed!! Hang on, Berisha has done plenty of acting, maybe we can get him on board the enterprise 😆

      (Quote)

  14. Still got a mouth full of sour grapes, I see. 😆 Liam Miller seems to be over it. I’ve seen a few pre-season games and he links up with Berisha really well.

  15. Season ticket has just arrived too. Why can’t somebody just erase Wednesday and Thursday and go straight to Friday night?

      (Quote)

  16. 😆 I’m over it mate.. honest 😥 😥 Liam Miller, has all the skill in the world but all he does is turn in little circles and has no mobility. You will see as this season progresses. For a man with his experience, he does not do enough..

  17. I think this season will be a big one for the A League mate.. I hope they capitalize on the good work from last season… I have already planned my weekend around catching a few of the games.. Sunday arvo is the main one I am looking forward to!!

      (Quote)

  18. Yes, hoping the momentum keeps up. The SBS free-to-air live game deal might help spread the word, and now there’s an ABC radio commentary deal. And it’s good to see the fringe Socceroos returning in the hope of getting a look in for Brazil.

Apparently football has already surpassed Rugby Union in audience reach, and is now 3rd in the football code stakes throughout the country, and is closing in on rugby league. It’s now considered to be the second football code to Aussie Rules in Victoria, Tasmania, South Oz, West Oz and NT, and rugby league in NSW, and is third behind league and union in ACT. In Queensland it is 4th – bloody morons up this way. Hopefully the major tv stations might even mention the game on the news this year 🙄

Don’t ask me how they measure all this btw.

Enough A-league for now. The poms’ll wake up and roll their eyes at all this. They don’t realise that football is alive and kicking beyond the UK, you know. 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  19. Hey, brisvegas @ 311 The closest you’ll get to a Brisbane and Newcastle game is on this weekend, it’s billed as France v Socceroos. 😆

  20. Poyet has had two cup games against us and beat us twice so I’m not too confident with our match against the Mackems. From what I’ve seen of Brighton over the last two seasons I think Poyet likes quick skillful wingers who can attack full backs and cut inside. With the players Sunderland have currently got that means the likes of Johnson will be much more effective. He also likes a player to ruffle up the opposition like El-Abd at Brighton. Cattermole will obviously take that role. Listening to Total sport last night he also likes to build a team from the back…

Then again who cares it’s the dirty unwashed, it’s never going to work out.

      (Quote)

  21. I can access this article anymore so don’t know if its already been mentioned or being discussed, but I see there is a march against Ashley arranged before the Liverpool game.

      (Quote)

  22. I want a new manager. A manager that is better than pardew. I would march for that but what does everybody else want?

Most fans seem happy for pardew to keep the club hovering around midtable so what are they marvhing for?

What do we want mike ashley to actually do?

      (Quote)

  23. I think they are marching in protest at the lack of progression at the club and in particular at the lack of spending in the last two Summer transfer windows.
Mike Ashley will not have any concern about this protest and will probably hope it gets some media coverage in which his sports company will get several mentions.
The only protest that Ashley will take action on is the cancellation of season tickets in January.
The problem is , how many fans will be willing to do that . After all, the season ticket money , and all other gate receipts, is money given to the club by the fans.
If the club are not willing to spend the fans money on what the fans want then cancelling season tickets and staying away from the ground is the only effective protest and the only way to affect change.
Are any season ticket holders on this blog going to cancel in January? – I doubt many will.
I cancelled mine in 2008 and replaced it with Sky Sport – still a good decision.

      (Quote)

  24. KK you might find that some fans are happy enough tosee Pards try to keep us around mid table, simple because they dont believe that Ashley has any ambition to try to push the club on, which he has shown by not strengthening the team when he should and by being happy to run things on the cheap including managers. 😈

      (Quote)

  25. Big Dave I think the europa league’s prise money is ridiculous compared to the champions league. No wonder team’s have been criticised in the past for getting knocked out early but when your chasing forth spot or avoiding relegation it’s a big strain on resources. Clubs could spend 200 million and still not make the top 4. I would like a better manager and to see us win every game but every team wants the same thing.

      (Quote)

  26. Darren@324, One thing the mackems are not short of is support within the media, whilst ignoring the absolute plight of their team and league position, they churn out things like -” Improved Performances”? and are they really pinning their hopes on a turnaround on a new managers stats with a former club?
One thing is for sure, a lot more would have been made of us if we were in their position.

      (Quote)

  27. If they scraped the europa league and had a big knock out tournament then that’s got to be better for smaller clubs. They may even knock out a giant team ?

      (Quote)

  28. Robert @330. That goes without saying. I remember when Caroll played for us and the papz would hound him wherever he went. Now he’s elsewhere he is left alone. But I think most fans take what the press say with a pinch of salt.

Anyways bigger clubs always get more press attention.

      (Quote)

  29. Have you got any ideas for a new article Premand? We need something new to chew on mate. 😀

      (Quote)

  30. The only reason we got Remy is that he is tainted goods with his rape case coming up. He doesn’t give a rats *** about us anymore than he cared about QPR other than that he wanted to play in London. That doesn’t mean he’s not an excellent player, he is. He is also happy with us because he is scoring goals and got back into the French side. The goals will make him more attractive to bigger clubs as well. He will leave us as soon as someone offers a better wage.

      (Quote)

  31. Sharpy I might have one but I have no idea how to submit so Toonsy can have a look at it.

Don’t know why im talking to Sharpy as he cant see any posts 😀

      (Quote)

  32. Sad but true Santii. I think he’s a fine player, let’s see how the rape case goes and how long he stays with us. Ba wasn’t here long and I don’t think Remy will be either. We will have to develop a good young striker of our own and we’ll probably be in the market for a youngish but experienced French striker who will take a wage of 50K a week or less. It’s a business for Ashley. He will always sell on as soon as it’s profitable enough. With Remy we can’t even do that as he’s not ours. I like a youngish side with lots of ambition but it takes years to develop a winning side and we’ll never be able to that with Ashley. Slow but steady progress? Such as 5th to 16th?

      (Quote)

  33. That’s totally bizarre if true SteveP. Ashley would much rather have an old drinking buddy in his management group, not a 23 year old pal of a son. We obviously have the superior method. A good pissup on the yacht with mature people who can really put it back. That’s the ticket, right Mike? But seriously it sounds like Cardiff are on the wrong track there.

      (Quote)

  34. Spuds supposed to be after Remy according to latest gossip ,if true that’s him away in jan then . Need to tie the lad down to a deal before then .

      (Quote)

  35. G2 another article from me. well I sent one in that was a follow up from my last one, but it didn’t add much and so I asked Toonsy not to publish but that could go up.

I have an idea about the history of success we don’t have but it’s a bit depressing. It might also make these seem like glory years if we have a good season.

However I am not well at the moment and hence not really up to writing much. Why don’t you have a go.

      (Quote)

  36. Sorry to hear you’re not well Premandup. Hope you get better soon. As for the article I think anything you write would probably be better than my feeble attempts but if I can think of a good topic I might have a go.

      (Quote)

  37. Kim…He’s on a season long loan so we have him for the full season at least though I think if we don’t get him signed up early doors in Jan then we won’t stand a chance in the summer.

      (Quote)

  38. I wouldn’t worry to much about losing Remy. He will probably have one good season and that’s it like Cisse ?

      (Quote)

  39. At the end of the day, I only hold it against players if they claim to love us and then jump ship at the first opportunity, ala Carroll. Players who leave for more money and a better side…well, that’s how we get ours 🙄

      (Quote)

  40. Ashley is being sensible with his money but whats so bad with earning 50 grand a week ? Player’s are just greedy today

      (Quote)

  41. Newkie spot on mate. 50 grand a week should be more than enough for any player in my opinion. Thats a nice house, car etc. If they love the club they will stay loyal if not then see you around and good riddance

      (Quote)

  42. Nothing wrong with 50K a week at all STEM mate but we’ll never keep our best players that way. Not when they know they can get much more elsewhere. STEM I think Remy is an all round better player than Cisse. He will score if he’s in the side whereas it’s extremely hit and miss with Cisse. Remy is much better on the ball, quicker and can actually beat a man whereas Cisse needs that one chance, unmarked with the keeper at his mercy and even then it’***** and miss sad to say.

      (Quote)

  43. It would be like going to a car dealer and saying “I’ll give you half of what you’re asking” and then have someone else come up and pay the full price. You can’t act shocked when you don’t get the car. Or I guess you can if you’re Ashley, Dekka, or Joe.

      (Quote)

  44. “Nothing wrong with 50K a week”

You see that’s from our point of view i would say not many of us make that in a year. So of course to us it is crazy that someone would want more.

But if you are a pro footballer playing for a team and get say 40k a week and you are twice as good as another player sitting on 80k a week you would be like wtf i should be getting that. Thats one angle to look at it anyway.

It is not the players fault there is so much money in football but there is and they can earn a lot of it so why wouldn’t they i know i would. That type of money could set my whole family up for generations.

I dont judge anyone on the money they make and certainly don’t hold it against them if they want to earn more money.

      (Quote)

  45. Santii and G2 I understand where your coming from but if you both played for Newcastle on 50 grand a week and Sunderland offered 100 grand would you leave ???

      (Quote)

  46. I hear on another blog that Willie Donachie has been calling our reserves and U-21 players lesser players. Is that meant to help their confidence then? He must be doing wonders with those clever bits of psychology.

      (Quote)

  47. STEM @357 😆 Yes that would be a players worst nightmare. I can stay and play for Newcastle or earn twice as much with the mackems. Hmmm. How many years have I got left? Ahhhhhh!!! I might just have to do it the way the wife’s looking at me.

      (Quote)

  48. In my imagination there is two teams i would never play for Sunderland and Celtic.

So no Stem but i sure as hell would use it as an advantage to get some more money out of Newcastle the tight fisted bastards. Mike the ****** wont give me a pay rise get him oooooootttttt!!!!!!

      (Quote)

  49. ” I might just have to do it the way the wife’s looking at me.”

hahahaha people forget footballers have wives who make all the major decisions 😀

I still love Demba Ba but his wife can **** right offf!!

  50. Wow! 😯

Just reading thru the previous days blog exchange. 😯

It looks like Big Dave wiped the floor with Aussie and hung him out to drive. 😛

This has been comedy classic! 😛

Well done Dave! You’ve taken him to the cleaners and Mark the butterfly has fluttered to his save him but fell in the wash! 😆 😆

    @Big Dave

We have been saying the same thing for over a year and you are right, Aussie never agreed with us. But now he has come round to our way of thinking, he claims he has said it all along!
Woo hoo hoo hoo 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  51. Think how well Obertan (Squidward) is going to live after his career in entertainment with us is over. A few years at 20 or 25K a week for chasing a ball around, running very fast but accomplishing nothing. It sounds bloody brilliant for him. But what exactly is it doing for the club?

      (Quote)

  52. Groan STEM mate. And Luque as well. Think of all the millions gone for nothing. 🙁 On the other hand we have big Joe and Mike to keep us happy. Joe and Graham are probably out there now searching for that next young player who will play for crackers and then become a star and be sold on.

      (Quote)

  53. G2 I forgot Alan Smith I’m actually starting to feel sympathy for Ashley being a cheap skate with player’s like that.

      (Quote)

  54. “We have had some right melts at this club on ridiculous money. No wonder Mike wants cheap player’s”

The majority of were brought in by Freddy Shepard who was running the club into the ground and in my opinion we were heading for relegation long before Mike Ashley came along.

Leave Alan Smith alone i love that guy by all accounts he was a great professional to have around the club and there is that awesome tackle he made in the championship which is in almost every Newcastle highlight reel going 😛

      (Quote)

  55. Smithy did do a fair bit of graft for us STEM mate, especially in the Championship. I’m not say he completely earned his wage but I don’t put him in the same category as Luque and Xisco. Was it all their fault? I’m still not sure because the club was in such a mess at the time but they weren’t exactly hidden gems either were they?

      (Quote)

  56. Santii I agree Owen, Boomsong, Luque where here but Ashley had to pick up the wage bill from Shephard but i never rated Smith on 50 grand a week.
