Is it a waste of time trying keep Yohan Cabaye?

Cabaye has eyes on bigger things
Cabaye has eyes on bigger things
In terms of transfer news, the last few months have been pretty sweet. That is the security that the closing of a transfer window brings.

Right up until the last moments I was waiting for one of our players to go, and the smart money looked to be on Yohan Cabaye making a move elsewhere.

However he didn’t. He stayed and regardless of what has gone on he is back in the team and has been performing well. The only issue is, with another transfer window fast approaching, all of the stories and speculation will once again resurface. In fact they already have and once again it is Yohan Cabaye who is at the forefront of them.

For instance take these quotes from a radio interview in France:

“I miss the Champions League. I’ll finish this season with Newcastle and concentrate on the coming months and then we’ll see.”

Now he’s not exactly saying he’ll be off in fairness but even so it’s not great news. Clearly he has eyes on bigger things and although I doubt he, or many players who are looking to get into World Cup squads, would be looking to move into a new team and new surroundings a few months before squads are drawn up for the summer, a good World Cup would most certainly put him in the shop window.

I’m not getting too down about Yohan Cabaye. I think he’s a great player on his day but I also think in Vurnon Anita we have a player who is capable of replacing him in the side. I just wonder if the hassle and destabilising effect is worth it?

We’ve won three on the bounce so I feel a bit out of place having a moan about things, but then again three wins only papers over fundamental cracks that are still evident at United. The reality is that all players are for sale so don’t get too attached to them.

In terms of Cabaye, I think we’re peeing against the proverbial wind. We’re being used as a stepping stone which I’m annoyed about but I can also understand. If the ambition of a player can’t be matched here then why should they stick around in what is such a short career? What annoys me more though is that this also seems to fit with the blueprint of the club which makes it all a waste of time trying to keep hold of Cabaye.

Or anyone really…

  1. I have a white German Shepherd by the way and walking him is hilarious, scares the **** out of people who think he’s a wolf 😀

None of those poxy small dogs for me i’m afraid..

  2. So your not going to mention all the dogs you have picked up at nightclubs then Newkie 😆

  3. Sorry that was a sexist comment, my apologies go out to the women of this blog.. Kim, Deb and Troy, i am sorry 😆 😆

No I’m not, they’re not my dogs, they are more like the communal sheep of New Zealand, or watering holes of Australia 🙂

  5. Boots – agreed mate. Putting Colos want to leave aside, I think Willo and Mapou played really well against Chelsea and Spurs, and the back for of those 2 with Debuchy and Santon either side have been performing really well. Leave Colo on the bench for me

      (Quote)

  6. Good shout on Willo, he’s proven he can play with either of them so he’s a good choice. I would also leave Mbiwa in there, not just on merit but also to keep the armband with Tiote. I’m not so sure Pardew will do that though, he will go for Colo.

  7. Hes got probably the strongest squad hes ever had at Newcastle fit and available to him this weekend:

Krul, Elliott, Debuchy, Colo, Yanga-Mbiwa, Willo, Saylor, Santon, Dummett, Haidara, Anita, Tiote, Cabaye, Sissoko, Jonas, Ben Arfa, Gouffran, Remy, Sammy, Shola, Cisse

Hell do well to find an excuse if we do lose dismally this weekend…

      (Quote)

  8. Newkie, I get it mate, a gentleman never tells 😆

yep Collo should be nursing his **** on the bench but I cant see it happening.. if that is the case, bench Santon and play Mbiwa in his place…

  9. It means an all nighter for me. I’ll be at the Roar game (watching us woop the arses of the Perth Glory hoofers in the afternoon), then a few beers up the road while watching the next game on telly. By the time I get home I’ll only have time for a couple of hours kip before the PL games start.

Has anyone read the article BB posted?
Pardew said that he wants to manage in the Champions League.
Effing stepping stone club. That’s the only reason we got him on a long term contract – to get higher compensation.
What’s the point in him being here if he wants to move 😕

      (Quote)

  11. Vegas, I see that the Glory has gone from football playing thugs to hoofball merchants in your eyes.., we shall see come the weekend.. 😉

  12. ST – where in that post do you read that he doesn’t want to be here?. What he said is he misses and wants to play CL footy.

Newkie – I’d keep Tiote as captain too.

CC – I’d be thrilled if we could sign the next Tim Krul, whilst keeping the real Tim Krul as well.

      (Quote)

  13. BB – he’s not for me either mate. I’d be surprised if there’s any truth in it really tho, due to his age and wages/fee.
Boyata would be my choice, however I have never seen any links to him so far.

    From the Chron:
“Asked if he wanted to manage in the competition, he said: “Absolutely.”
Pardew is just using us 😥
I think we should all face it, players want to play in the CL. I want to play in the Champions League! Those with potential are going to get continually asked. They can either lie and get hounded by fans they leave, or admit it and get hounded by fans.
So long as they carry on doing their job (which Cabaye didn’t do at the start of the season), I don’t think I have too many complaints.

      (Quote)

  15. ST – of course he wants to manage in the CL – what else would he say?!
Would you like to manage Newcastle in the CL – Absolutely!
Would you like to mange England one day? – Absolutely!.

    Or

“Asked if he wanted to manage in the competition, – not a fucking chance!, having been in Europa last season I hated that and can only imagine managing in the CL being totally ****!.
I wouldn’t have thought so like.

If he was using us as a stepping stone and thought for a second he ever had the chance of managing a CL club, would he really have signed an 8 year deal?

      (Quote)

  16. Sharpy, I think you’ve mis-read.
    I’m taking the ****.
People blow up innocuous player comments, similar to Pardew’s all the time.
He’s right, the media load questions, and if they don’t get the answer they want, misconstrue it anyway.

      (Quote)

  17. People will come to the conclusion that Krul is leaving, But its probably more to do with the fact that Alnwick isnt ready and injuries/suspensions to Krul and Elliot at the same time (which happened a few times last season) means were up **** street with nee Harper around.

  20. Aussie-it’s interesting with left back…Santon, Haidara, Dummett, Mbiwa. At full strength we have a lot of youngsters to play and appease…think we should get Haidara out on loan maybe to a championship squad. Ferguson isn’t getting much game time but when he does he’s on the left of midfield, and they are really struggling under Clark right now. Try and get Haidara there and link up with ferguson. Dummett and Sammy have already shown they have a good relationship in the matches they’ve played together, I have hopes for Haidara but don’t think Fergie will make it with us-but we might as well get some money for him if possible!

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy – crazy ****** No 13 here. The idea of Pardew leaving us for the CL is about the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time. Bloke would be lucky to get a job at Rangers 😆

Not liking what I’ve read about Willo starting on Sat and Colo. MYM’s been our best defender recently. He shouldn’t be dropped. Colo on the other hand looks slow and rusty and do we really need a Willo type to deal with Long? 3 wins in a row hasn’t changed my mind about Pardew 👿

      (Quote)

  22. Georgio-Willo isn’t the man to mark long, however he is the man t o deal with the service which WBA provide their strikers, which from what I’ve seen, is a big long ball up top. It hasn’t changed since last year, although with Lukaku it was a lot more effective because he could trap, turn and brush off any defender he liked. Long has the pace though which worries me in a Colo/Willo partnership, Mbiwa is that bit quicker that would help in those situations. Santon is our only back with any real pace but he’s only switched on defensively half time, at best.

      (Quote)

  23. Agree with some of that Newkie. We need Goofy or someone to keep Brunt quiet for his crossing and Tiote to get hold of Mulumbu. I’d definitely keep MYM in there though. Tough on Colo but he needs to work hard and get fit!

      (Quote)

  24. Georgio – you’re alot higher than no. 13 on my list of crazy ******* buddy 😉
Pardew to Rangers isn’t so unrealistic one day I reckon mate. Should Ashley go on to buy them when they get back to the SPL, he’d want his own man in and Pardew has been a good servant to him so far. Pardew may get the chance to manager in the CL ….. Hold on, Pardew IS using us as a stepping stone!!!!!! 😥 😥

      (Quote)

  25. Georgio-exactly. Until one of them shows a drop of form I wouldn’t switch it. Our poor defensive performances like Everton before were just as much Colo’s fault as Mbiwa’s, but Mbiwa was by and large made the scapegoat. Sessegnon and Amalfitano running at Willo does worry me though, if they shuffle the pack they could expose some of the flaws in our back line. Hopefully Tiote will be in good form to keep them all in check.

      (Quote)

  26. Sharpy – No 3?

Newkie – aye I’d forgotten those two. There again Hazard and co? We’ll see but a draw wouldn’t be a bad result.

      (Quote)

  27. Georgio-true. As with most things it depends on which opposition turn up. I was glad to see them faltering at the end vs Villa because if they start well and we start well (usually do after 15 mins of settling in) then we can take them and see the game out as both teams tire. But I worry about dominating the first half but not taking our chances and letting Wbrom back in with 20 minutes to go for another nervy finish 😕

A draw would be ok on the back of our recent results-still hoping for a win but they are a bit of a bogey side. Still remember us throwing away than 3-0 lead at the end of the season three seasons back!!

      (Quote)

  28. Georgio – I think you at 4th mate, you were 5th but Chebz seems to have vanished.

I think we can beat WBA, but we’d have to keep going for 90mins and not allow them to have dominating periods of the game like we did in the 2nd half against Norwich. WBA look decent under Clarkie and he has a very high work ethic amongst his team. I think 11 v 11 we have a better team so it will be down to which 11 works the hardest and wants it more IMO.

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie – agree but tbh there’s a few others I’d be looking to get out on loan as well mate.
I’m also not entirely sure what the point of a 1 month loan achieves either to be honest.

      (Quote)

  30. Sharpy-aye, plenty of others. I think the idea behind 1 mont his the club get to see the lad up close and it means we can pull the plug early if he doesn’t get playing time. If he does we just extend it.

      (Quote)

  31. Our youth academy has been hopeless for bringing players through who make it as regulars in the first team.

It may pay for itself by selling them onto lesser teams but that’s only a guess.

      (Quote)

  32. Just one point which has been mentioned lately. Some suggest that Mikey Boy will choose Rangers over the Toon as it will bring SD onto a bigger stage.

I don’t know how that is the case as clubs aren’t allowed to advertise during the CL games.

      (Quote)

  33. Troy – you make a very good point mate. But with NUFC now playing at SJP again, it leaves the name Sports Direct Arena needing a Stadium again doesn’t it?!.
Plus Rangers will feature alot more in live Sky games as one of the main SPL teams than they do now. Plus, financially it will be alot less money required to operate Rangers than an EPL team I’d think.

      (Quote)

  34. Big loan day today. Tavanier and vuckic going to Rotherham on one month emergency loan. Hope its to gain fitness to be in contention for first team but unlikely.
Old boy shay given going to boro.

Also great news from euro league. Bony has Bern injured for Swansea and will likely be out for next wedensdays fixture. Swansea are without michu also, so its looking bright for our coming fixtures

      (Quote)

  35. Troy – keep that kind of info to yourself man.
It would be so funny to see fatty make a fool of himself yet again. 😛
Meh ❗ you’ve gone and ruined it 😳

      (Quote)

  36. I’m sorry to say this but I agree with Troy. EPL makes more money than the SPL. It’s still possible they could fail to reach the champions league of Celtic or the qualifiers route i.e. making less money than Ashley gets with us ? Why take the risk and earn a lot less. EPL league money is going up year after year and BT our rivals now and in 3 years god knows how much it will be ? Ashley could make his money back quicker than expected and pocket a yearly profit. He will never spend big on players or hire a decent manager because it’s money in his pocket. Sad to say but it’s realistic that he will be here for years to come.

  37. Wow, the SPL is not broadcast in other countries 😯

    SPL Broadcasters

    Country Broadcasters
    Hungary Sport TV
    Portugal SportTV
    Serbia Sport Klub
    United Kingdom ESPN UK
    Sky Sports
    Qatar Al Jazeera Sport

Now this does not include countries like the USA and Australia who can watch the games through ESPN..

Another broad sweeping comment from Troy that is totally unsubstantiated 😆
Troy, you may need to try traveling a little further than down the road to the local deli and get out and see the world a little 😆 😆

How have I misread that Richie 😉

      (Quote)

  40. I didn’t say you misread his comment, maybe you misread mine though 😉 I just pointed out that he said it’s not shown “worldwide” whereas your comment said “not broadcast in other countries” which is completely different 😛

  42. BB…But he didn’t get it wrong in that comment as Aussie well knows as he’s “possibly” one of the more intelligent posters on the blog(that in no way can be construed as a compliment 😆 😆 ) but here’s a Troy quote from a couple of weeks back that suits all our requirements

I am not sure how “The SPL is not televised worldwide like the EPL” can be construed as anything else..

  47. Wow! 😯

I have to dumb down my convo’s on here for the likes of Aussie & Bootsy as they struggle with the most easiest of subjects. 😳

    Thanks Richie. 😉

The whole point, was to highlight the SPL does not attract a worldwide audience like the EPL.

You can get games from every league in the world I’m sure but it doesn’t mean they get large audiences. The EPL is popular worldwide. The SPL is popular in Scotland. Even the Jocks watch the EPL more than the SPL. 😉

Richie, that’s why I ridicule Aussie & Bootsy as they aren’t capable of holding down a decent conversation. 😆

    @Stem

” Even the Jocks watch the EPL more than the SPL. ” – Oh really ❓

      (Quote)

  51. B+B-Good to hear he is still thereabouts then. We won’t be able to expect week in week out grafting from Goof and my guess is he might get subbed earlier and earlier-a possible place for Marv? I still can’t see why Sammy didn’t come on for those few minutes instead of Obertan though but oh well. Staylor can stay out of the matchday squad completely as far as I’m concerned. Either Mbiwa or Colo on the bench with Dummett about and we can plug any gap, and Anita will always be there for either full back position if we’re stretched.

      (Quote)

  52. Newkie – we have something like 14 matches over the coming 7 weeks.
I have no doubts we will have to rotate some players like you say.
At least we have more depth to choose from than last season, due to fewer injuries.
