Game On! Swansea v Newcastle

Game On at The Liberty
Game On at The Liberty
Good evening one and all and welcome to this ‘Game On’ article which will take us through every twist and turn of the game against Swansea tonight.

With four wins on the spin expectations for United are running slightly higher than they were after the defeat to Sunderland. Confidence is high and the team are playing well together but Swansea will present their own problems for us this evening.

It’s been a rollercoaster for Swansea in recent years with the main trajectory being upwards from scrapping around in the bottom tier of the league pyramid to the Premier League bagging a League Cup success and qualification for Europe along the way. Michael Laudrup is tasked with keeping that momemtum up which when you look at it in certain perspectives isn’t as easy as some make it out too be. That’s longer term though. This is purely about tonight.

As covered in my match preview injury news is pretty good for United at the moment although the same can’t be said for Swansea who are missing both this seasons top scorer and last seasons top scorer through injury. Maybe there was something in the Europa League excuses that were used by Alan Pardew last season?

The game itself is live on BT Sport here in the UK and is also being shown live on a host of overseas channels so picking up a stream shouldn’t be too difficult. Once again if you do happen to find a good stream then by all means feel free leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below. Team news will be updated as soon as I get my lad to bed unless Big Dave steams in and bridges the gap once more.

That’s just about it and now it’s over to the lads to do their business. Can they make it five wins out five ahead of trip to Old Trafford on Sunday? Or will December start off like usual and signal a month of struggle for the Magpies?

Howay the lads!

Swansea: Michel Vorm, Dwight Tiendalli, Chico Flores, Ashley Williams, Ben Davies, Jose Canas, Jonathan de Guzman, Jonjo Shelvey, Alejandro Pozuelo, Pablo Hernandez, Alvaro Vazquez

Subs: Gerhard Tremmel, Jordi Amat, Neil Taylor, Leon Britton, Wayne Routledge, Roland Lamah, Nathan Dyer

Newcastle: Tim Krul; Mathieu Debuchy, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon; Moussa Sissoko, Cheik Tiote, Yohan Cabaye, Yoan Gouffran; Shola Ameobi, Loic Remy

Subs: Rob Elliot, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Massadio Haidara, Paul Dummett, Vurnon Anita, Gabriel Obertan, Sammy Ameobi

  1. The result should have been obvious the moment every fan and his dog started predicting a win 😆 Good to see we’ve not changed at all!

  2. Toonsy@213 – hey, keep that kind of balanced, rational talk for the articles, this is the comments section. 😉

  3. It’s as if the toon have been told to let Swansea keep the ball, and stand off them. What an absolutely ***** performance, lethargic, we didn’t win any second ball.
    What a capitulation.

      (Quote)

  4. BB @212Pards and Troy were not wrong . Pards forced too make a change , if the Formidable attacking presence of Cisse was on the bench Swansea would of been shitting themselves and we would of won 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  5. we should of started the game like we did at the start of the 2nd half.

Why let them play & keep possession when they have no forwards. So much for Pardew always looking to play offensive football 🙄

poor display all round apart from a few.. not sure what Obertan was doing. ive seen more interest from a type 2 diabetic in a cake shop

  6. Macca spot on again for me!, pen and sending off for him (and me!)
Called it right at half time as well – better pundit than Michael fucking Owen – the little bell end!!

      (Quote)

  7. For me the main problem with Pardew is what he doesn’t know how to manage the turnover in a good way, ow we loose and to much changes under panic just because we loose one game, or we win and never changes the team until a big loose, remember 2 seasons ago, after a run of win we loose 4-0 against wigan.
Even if it’s easy to say it after the game, but imagine if in big clubs managers never change one single player when their team wins, he will never change but they always do some small changes, and not wait a defeat to change.

  8. Mark@235 – and everyone else trying to reinvent the match) – the counter-attack plan was fine. The difference in the 1st half was that Vorm came up with a brilliant save and Krul made a blunder. If both had just been average when called on, we’d have gone into half-time ahead.

  9. There’ll be some happy bloggers tonight cos they can have a go at Pards. 🙁

I know who you are. 😉

      (Quote)

  10. and yeah for People who cry for Obertan in this blog4-5 weeks ago, because we were loosing and they didn’t see him play since long time.
This guy just has problem with football simple as that, and that will never change.

      (Quote)

  11. Well we can bounce back at ManU – players should be up for it and apparently Rooney won’t be playing at weekend as he picked up his 5th yellow tonight – saying that nor will Debuchy who has been one of our best players over the last 5 weeks, wasn’t hard tonight as they just passed it round our midfield as if they weren’t there.
Sissoko, Shola and Gouff were knackered after 15 mins – think most of us on here said we should replace Shola – Pards has even said himself he can’t play two games in a week …. so wtf was he doing picking him

      (Quote)

  12. @Wellington

Yes, I agree mate. It does work & this season we’ve reaped rewards from playing that way but they were there for the taking with a injury hit squad.

We should of applied more pressure from the start..

      (Quote)

  13. In fairness Troy, I’m not a Pardew hater but fucking hell – how do you explain him bringing on two defenders when we’re losing?

      (Quote)

  14. @223
‘We have been in cockoo land for a few weeks, its back to reality now.’
    Couldn’t agree more… Except it’s ‘Cookoo land’ 😆 😆 😆

  15. Master tactician given a footballing lesson.
Pass and move, dominate possession, score the first goal, then score more when we had to chase the game.
    Watch and learn Pardew PLEASE

      (Quote)

  16. Subs were weird.
But until that Krul flap we were more than comfortable. Commentators were saying it was a good choice to let them have the ball. Isn’t that how we won there a couple of seasons ago.
Performance was utter **** in every department, but we are a midtable team. Inconsistency is expected.

“DarthBroon – Not seen you for ages. You keeping well?”

Football aside, toonsy 😀 Even then, I was alright until the second goal went in. Then I just had to stop by and share my misery with fellow sufferers. Such is our lot, eh?

Chance for redemption, but not if we play like that. And I would rather they beat Everton 5-0 than lose at home… Have they EVER lost twice at home?? (in non-biblical times) 😥 😥 😥

      (Quote)

  19. Don’t care about the manure game
Tonight was a chance to get another win, but not starting out the way we did.

      (Quote)

  20. No real surprise in the end, still it was nice while it lasted.

Now we’ve crash landed back down to earth we should realise that we’re only really midtable mediocrity under Pardew.

10th, 9th maybe even the lofty height of 8th place – that’s where we can expect to finish.

No way in the world should we have lost 3-0 against Swansea. We should not even come away with a draw.

Only a win would have been acceptable.

      (Quote)

  21. KK@257 – 😯 “Only a win would have been acceptable.” 😯

Well, why stop there? Surely just a 0-1 wouldn’t have been anywhere near good enough, a 0-4 would have been just going through the motions, right? I’m pretty sure that anything less than a double-figure win in every match should lead to calls for Pardew’s head, and if we dont’ finish the league with more than a thousand goals he should be sacked!

      (Quote)

  22. Only Man Utd next.

They always lose 2 games in a row at Old Trafford.

Plus David Moyes has nothing to prove.

They’re only ’12’ points from the top of the table in 9th place – happens every season.

Yep, Man Utd will definitely not be up for the game against us.

      (Quote)

  23. BB
    What did he say?
    KK
Yeah alright. Swansea are one of the teams around our level. Draw would have been an alright result. It’s mainly the performance that was so disheartening.

      (Quote)

  24. @wellington

    Swansea:
    – without their best player
    – their most expensive signing in history.
    – Forced into an early unwanted substitution.
They’ve played a ridiculous number of games recently & in europe.
    – They had 1 less day to rest/prepare

    Newcastle:
    – Almost a full strength sqaud.
    – Our first choice 11 started the game.
    – 4 wins in a row so apparently we have ‘good’ momentum.
    – Better players than Swansea
    – Bigger club than Swansea
    – Played less games than Swansea so less fatigued.

But still, you don’t think there is any reason why we should have expected a win??? 🙄

      (Quote)

  25. Well.. I think tonight was a mixture of the players and Pardew getting it wrong. (against a pretty but… lets face it, average side) and being really unlucky. (the 1st goal in extra time of the first half and the second goal bouncing of Debuchy and the good save from Remy’s header/handball appeal)
We need to bounce back now though. I don’t think Pardew and the team have it in them to get anything at Old Trafford but we need 6 points from the other 2 games otherwise it’s back to mediocrity.

      (Quote)

  26. Fact is, as poor as we were first half if Webb had done his job properly it would of changed the game . I just knew that ***** would **** it up for us.

      (Quote)

  27. He hasn’t spoken to webb yet but wants an explanation.
As manager of NUFC he is entitled to know why all those decisions went against us.

      (Quote)

  28. Kim
Yeah definitely, that’s way I don’t want to overreact too much over the result. Another day, Krul doesn’t make the mistake just before HT, we get one of the pens, Shelvey gets sent off.
We’ll see anyway. A lot of us were hoping for 7 more points by the half way stage. Still very much doable.
Should have rested Shola and a couple of others tonight though.

      (Quote)

  29. i honestly dont think we were 3 goals worse than them the score line flattered them . We are still 7th and the scum doon the road lost again , oh yeah and we are above our next opponents and they have 2 of their star players missing for that one . ALL IS NOT LOST

      (Quote)

  30. Swansea are not at our level. We’re at Everton’s level in terms of players.

There are not many Swansea players i would want at this club.

      (Quote)

  31. The sad thing was I think Webb… for the first time I’ve ever seen, was really fair to us. We were just unlucky not to get a couple of 50-50 penalty decisions from him. No complaints from me on the referee, we just weren’t up for it and from some reason Swansea love playing us. 3 defeats in a row. 😳

      (Quote)

  32. We weren’t 3 goals worse than them but we were worse than them & we shouldn’t have been.

It’s one of those screw ups that should just be expected.

The players were well below the level they should be at, so either they aren’t as fit as Swansea, they weren’t as hungry as Swansea or Pardew screwed up.

I think the players were too tired (Pardew should have brought in 2 or 3 players to start)

The players didn’t seem to have the right mentality. The players & Pardew are to blame for going into it with the wrong mindset.

      (Quote)

  33. Solano ,I was one who said don’t change a winning team I’m afraid . I think it was more a tactics error tonight more than anything, the midfield were swamped and we sat back letting them have the ball waiting to counter which is fine if you have a couple of clinical finishers but if Remy is off form or held back 👿 you won’t capitalise on the counter. We know Shola is unlikely to hit the net, he did his usual trick of getting tangled in his own legs in the box tonight but I’ll forgive him cause he’s been fab of late. 😉

Well it’s a slip up, it’s how they react that’s important.

      (Quote)

  34. Kim
It’s one of those things isn’t it. Genius if you get it right, slated if you get it wrong! We let them get too comfortable. This Swansea with Shelvey is a little more attack minded when they are passing it around, so it is a lot more dangerous to do so. When it was just Allen – Britton it was fine to let them toy around with it.

      (Quote)

  35. The Substitutions look like they were made because Santon & Williamson & Shola were too tired?

Or maybe Pardew wanted Haidaira to cross the ball into the box which Santon didn’t have much success doing?

Williamson & Colo were too slow. Pardew can’t take Colo off so he takes Williamson off for the faster Mbiwa?

Obertan on for Ameobi – Ameobi perhaps wasn’t mobile enough & didn’t have the fitness to last the game?

      (Quote)

  36. We can beat Man Utd. It will probably be the hardest game of the Season so far but it is possible.

An early goal would put real pressure on them, pressure that they’ve not really seen in 20 years.

This defeat gives Pardew the excuse he needs to freshen up the team. Lets hope he does.

      (Quote)

  37. ST
Nah, I said (and some others) it was time to change it. And rest Shola for Manure. He’s not a genius, he’s a cheeky chappy who makes excuses when he loses and laps it up when he stumbles upon a good formation and players in form. His changes on the night were bizzare as well and had no effect on the game. Laudrup chinned us with a bunch of 2nd rate players compared to what we have! …how many Spain internationals has he got? 😕

      (Quote)

  38. DJG has got it spot on at 278 although i don’t think Laudrup didn’t anything great either.

I guess Swansea have better coaching behind the scenes. Foundations laid down by Rodgers & Martinez.

      (Quote)

  39. @DJG
Is that a trick question? I think they had like 7 internationals on the pitch.
Swansea aren’t the mugs that some on here are claiming.
We should never feel entitled to beat teams like this away. We are upper mid table. That means we aim for wins against all but the top 6 at home. A handful of wins away. That gives us our mid 50s points that our squad and manager are currently at.
Bad performance but all this “second-rate” Swansea thing is bollocks.

      (Quote)

  40. All I can say is we got beat fair and square by Swansea who deserved all three points but I didn’t see the match. M’biwa should have started in the first place but Pardew has his favourites. After two excellent performance’s and he plays Colocini who’s slower and recovering from injury. It makes no sense to me at all.

      (Quote)

  41. Sometimes if your lucky you can sit deep and win games on the counter but it wasn’t to be unfortunately.

I think Pardew’s done well this season.

      (Quote)

  42. Cisse has really disappointed me. QPR will never exchange Cisse for Remy unless there utterly stupid. He can’t score and is awful.

      (Quote)

  43. It’s not that I don’t want Cisse to prove me wrong and score some goals. How many chances does he need ?

      (Quote)

  44. Disapointing result but you cant win them all. I stated yesterday that we should rotate our starting line up due to fatigue… ahh well, you never change a winning team I guess 😕

      (Quote)

  45. 😆 I just had a read back at some of Troys post on the last thread.. comedy gold from someone that has no idea what it is like to run your heart out for 90 minutes during a game! 😆 😆
I don’t like being one of those “I told you so” crew but you know what..”I told you so” 😉
It was a perfect time to rest some of our players and keep them fresh for the large amount of games we have this month…
Anyway, I have emailed Pardew and tuned him in to his mistake.. 😛

      (Quote)

  46. Missed the game live but have seen a replay. Well, I saw the second half. I thought about reading the comments above but as they are all usually knee-**** bonkerism I decided against it. I expect somebody would have somewhere said something about us now being relegation candidates 🙄 😆

It seems to me that nothing really went right. On another day we could have scored a couple and had a penalty (at least one). Oh well, c’est la vie, as Geordies say.

      (Quote)

  47. Oz @ 287 Between you passing on your psychological insights and JJ passing on poignant reflections on all aspects of the game, Pardew should be well prepped for the match at the weekend.

      (Quote)

  48. Stem @ 281: “All I can say is we got beat fair and square by Swansea who deserved all three points but I didn’t see the match.”

If you didn’t see the match how do you know it was fair and square and that Swansea deserved all three points? Oh, wait, maybe you read a match report from one of those scrupulously fair-minded British newspapers

      (Quote)

  49. Vegas 😉 I fear the damage may already be done 😕 … Pardew should have listened earlier but if he can learn and grow from my advice then all is not lost 😛

      (Quote)

  50. We can’t win every game.

Swansea are a very good team with a very good manager. Certainly didn’t suffer from Europa syndrome against us. And that’s with missing two of their best players.

Where were Cisse and Ben Arfa?

      (Quote)

  51. It’s very likely Swansea will only be two points behind us after the weekend. And we’ve supposedly had a terrific start.

Yet you still get people saying: They don’t get what people see in Laudrup.

I might be a bit bias because he was one of my favourite players ever. But if I could swap Laudrup for Pards I would do it for sure.

Pardew has improved, but he will always be limited. I’d say Laudrup is on the same level, except he plays more attractive football and he has to potential to become much much better.

      (Quote)

  52. Stem – both Bris and JJ are bang on. You give a verdict on a game you didn’t watch and critise a player who didn’t even play!.
Colo played pretty well last night and forms a good partnership with Willo. It was actually Willo who was too deep and played Shelvey on side for what resulted in their 2nd goal, so if ya looking to have a pop at a CB then maybe go down that line mate.

As for being beat fairly as squarely – no we weren’t!, we were badly let down by a referee who has officiated at the highest level. Our first penalty claim is nailed on – 2 Swansea players actually handle it in the box!. So how he or his linesmen missed that is beyond me.
That’s at 1-0, so we score that pen and who knows how that turns the game.
The 2nd penalty claim – well anyway else on the pitch and Gouffran gets a freekick for a push in the back, so the only reason Webb hasn’t given it is coz it’s in the box. Straight from that they go up and score – so again, that pen could have made it 1-1 or 1-2 had he given and we scored the first.
Then Webb fails to send Shelvey off for a head but on Debuchy – Shelvey then goes on to score their 3rd and claim MOTM award.

Webb is a top draw referee, but he had a stinker last night for me and I hope he answered Pardew truthfully and held his hands up

      (Quote)

  53. Yeah, we should have received a pen for the handball… They should change the law to – If a players hands are raised in any fashion and the ball makes contact with the hands – penalty! Only if a player has his arms hanging by his sides will any leniency be given the referee.
Change the law to that and it will remove any grey areas in the law.. You will see more penalties but at least there won’t be any confusion. To me if you slide/jump to try and block a shot and the ball hits your arm/hand, well that is deliberate. You are in the act of blocking a shot. Too many players are getting away with it for my liking..

      (Quote)

  54. most of us know Laudrup would be better than Pardew. He likes pure football compared to Pards who likes to defend for the first half then put the pressure on. Yes it works but it aint pretty.

Obviously some on here had Laudrup down as a one season wonder even tho he’s changing his team to accommodate two strikers, who, incidentally didnt start last night but we still got beat 3-0..

I’m not calling Pardew but he talks about being an attack-minded coach, always looking drive forward. more like quite happy to defend for 45mins..

      (Quote)

  55. Mark,
For me Pards likes to be solid then put pressure on the last half hour.

Problem is, if we score then he tries to hold onto that lead and often we end up inviting pressure and surrendering the lead.

For me, the best form of defense is attack. Keep the momentum, try kill the game off. If you get caught out, so be it, but you are more likely to concede when you allow the opposition to have the ball and apply pressure.

He has improved a lot over the past two months has Pards, but I’m still not convinced. Like I said after the last win. 18 months of **** poor football isn’t forgotten because of one month were we got the rub of the green.

Still, we are in a good position. So he is doing a fair job ATM.
