Game On! Newcastle v Cardiff – FA Cup 3rd Round

The FA Cup.

The FA Cup.
Up for a cup?
Good afternoon all, and welcome to this special ‘Game On’ article which will take us through the start of what is hopefully a decent stab at trying to win some silverware.

The visitors today are Cardiff City who will travel to the North-East with their 300 fans in tow hoping for a first win for new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in this FA Cup 3rd round encounter.

However United will want to progress themselves and although the domestic cups are “not a priority” according to the hierarchy at the club, I do feel that at pitch level those words are lost and that the manager and players want to be professional and try to win a trophy. After all, that is the point in football isn’t it?

The early team news is that Fabricio Coloccini, Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy will definitely miss the match through injury and suspension whilst Tim Krul is doubtful. Official team news will be published shortly after 2pm and can be found at the bottom of this article but in the meantime why not head over to the match preview and immerse yourself in some history of the fixture along with aforementioned injury news and some possibly inane rambling from myself.

The bad news is that there are a lot of games today and ours isn’t exactly top of the bill and so isn’t being advertised as being broadcast anywhere here in the UK or overseas. However there is still a slim chance that there may be a stream available so if anyone does find one then please feel free to leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

It just feels to me as though the FA Cup has been devalued somewhat in recent years. It used to be THE cup to go for but at the end of the day I guess money talks and the serious money is no longer in the domestic cup competitions.

However as I said in my preview, we are surely ideally placed to have a go at bringing the fans some success? We aren’t going to get relegated and we aren’t going to finish much, if any, higher than we are now in the league so why not go for it. With some intent and a bit of luck why can’t we go far?

Howay the lads!

  1. Toonsy, I agree it’s not valued as it once was which is a big shame, it’s still the cup I would love to see us win though.

  2. I agree with Toonsy that at pitch level its still valued and all coaches and players want too win it , Mourinho has even said it was a special moment in his carrier when he won it . I think Pards will pick his strongest available team today , i would like too see Mbiwa and Williamson as the CB pairing and not Taylor brought back in their , with possibly Anita at RB and Bigi brought in to help hold the midfield with Tiote .

  3. Looks a very strong team, fingers crossed Cisse smashes it and gains some confidence to take forward.
Surprised to see Gouffran and Sissoko starting.

  5. Still no Jonas or Marv even on the bench?!.

Both sides have made changes but our 11 still has plenty of experience in it. No reason why we can’t win this one IMO.

Goof and Siss may be leggy like but if we can get ahead they may get a rest later on.

  7. And where’s Bigi too KIMTOON him and Marv seems too have Vanished off the planet ,i really thought Bigi would of kicked on this season the lad looked more than decent when i have seen him play .

  8. Yeah I’d forgotten about Marv. Him and maybe Jonas should be sold asap this transfer window. Their wages are too high to be not even making the bench for a game like this.

  9. I expect big games from Saylor and Cisse today.

0-2 the toon. Cisse brace – both set up by Benny.

    Could you imagine that! 😯
What would we talk about then?!

  10. Only if Man city key player was red carded…. an extra game for their fixture list. 😆 😆

  11. @15 and 22

apparently the reason why Jonas aint being considered for the 1st team is that his current contract stipulates a pay-rise/new deal upon reaching 200 appearances for the club (reported by various media recently – dunno how true it is). He’s on 190-odd at the min

Understandably with the player in clear decline, the club intend to avoid this clause being activated

  12. Wrong page ffs

Solid team fancy a win today.

P.S Feel sorry for Jonas not a nice way for a good, honest servant of the club to be shown the door especially while fucking Oertan still continues to get in the matchday 18…

  13. Agree about the comments re Jonas. Yet another example of the contract makers fucking up!.
Just wonder where Marv and Bigi are though. Would sooner see either ahead of Oba!.
Hope Sammi gets a run out today to give Goof or Siss a bit of a rest.

  15. Mark@8 That link works but although it says Newcastle v Cardiff it’s actually showing the Roch v Leeds match 😕

  16. Hate the FA cup, can never watch us play. I remember when we played Blackburn a couple of years ago and there was no link but we’d heard benny scored a stormer so we were all waiting up to watch the highlights, when the highlights came up after midnight it was only ten seconds long and I missed it.

  17. Dave ,It’s a joke , Solskjaer’s first game in charge too, you would think someone would show it 🙄

  18. Andy-that match was ridiculous. I remember that us v blackburn was the only Prem v Prem match that day and we had the least highlights of all the matches, fucking joke that one! At least we saw Benny’s goal I guesss.

  19. Good for some Newkie, I missed it. Didn’t see the goal for like a week and that was only when Ed posted it on his site. 🙄

  21. Those bbc radio links only work if you’re in the UK so if anybody has a mirror site or some other suggestion, please fire away.

For those who have the audio working, any interesting updates?
