Adios Jonas!

Jonas and Hughton reunited
Jonas and Hughton reunited
The news that Jonas Gutierrez has now departed Newcastle and joined Norwich is old news, but I’ve not had a chance to write about it as yet so here goes.

It may only be a temporary switch for now, but I get the feeling if he impresses at Carrow Road then Chris Hughton will look to make the move permanent in the summer. That’s if he is still in charge of the Canaries by then.

In many ways it is quite fitting that Jonas has moved to Norwich to be with Chris Hughton once more. For me both of those, among others, are synonymous with our promotion from the Championship and subsequent solidification in the Premier League once more.

However chance for Gutierrez have become harder to come by in recent months. Once one of the first names on the team sheet under Hughton and latterly Alan Pardew, Jonas has only made two league appearances this season although I suspect that would have been more had it not been for injury.

Of course for the accountants it’s no doubt great news. Contracted with us until 2015 it’s more than likely one high wage earner trimmed from the bill – wages that are unlikely to be ploughed back into the club by covering wage costs of a new player.

I still think it’s kind of sad though, in an emotional way, just because Jonas has been with us for a while and stuck (whether through choice or necessity) with us in our darkest recent hours.

But then you have to look at it sensibly. Jonas probably wants to be playing football and if he can’t get it here then quite rightly he’ll want to get it elsewhere. Emotion aside, could anyone really justify a place in the side for Jonas as things stand? How many times has his ability to win a free-kick been used a reason to justify him? Or his work-ethic? 198 appearances with 11 goals and not many more assists speaks volumes.

It could have been different though and I thought it would have been when I recall his debut at Old Trafford. He was exceptional that day and his performance left many fans purring but that was to be an exception rather than the norm.

This is not to say he won’t be missed. A senior member of the squad and reportedly well-liked within the camp he will be, as a person, but as a player perhaps not so much? I wish him all the best and hope his move works out for him, apart from when we play Norwich of course.

All the best, Jonas!

  1. things quiet on the Marv front too, will never trust this lot owt is possible with the so and sos 👿

  2. Dave – Sharpy looked it up and found Marv was on something like 60k a week now. That is a significant increase on whatever he would have been on in France, quite possibly three times as much. Is that still normal money? Because I saw him play harder in France than he has done for us, that’s why I was happy to see him sign. He had a big chance last season, had some good games and very good moments, but also he had forgettable ones, which were by and large down to a lack of effort rather than making constant mistakes.

Initially I thought he was wary of getting involved in challenges-that’s fair enough, Ben Arfa was the same when he came back and he’s always been pretty slack at tracking back. But sooner or later you are going to need to push your body to the limits-it’s dangerous for Marv because of his history with injury and he probably doesn’t want to run at full pelt much, but he is only so much use if he can’t push his body to the max. I guess that is the one item Obertan has over him. Maybe Obertan is being used to push Marveux into action, people speculated the same when Jonas was in the side and Benny couldn’t get back in. He started games early on this season and barely impressed-Goofran and Sissoko aren’t even wingers yet they did better jobs than him, as did Ben Arfa. Most people want to see him in that no 10 role but it’s based on a very few showings and is it right to put someone in the team just so they don’t have to work hard? He’s a better passer and less selfish but he be miles better than Benny in there?

      (Quote)

  3. NEWKIE I thought Marv was a canny signing at the time,I watched him play a number of times before he came to the toon and thought he would be a top signing but IMO he fell into the trap of not been able to handle thePL like a few before

  4. G2 acrobatically dancing between blogs annoying both with equal severity 😀

Will be interesting to see how Jonas does In the Norwich side. I personally think his dismay at tactical deficiencies last season tells us a lot, and bring stuck in an unfamiliar role, ruined his game, especially nurse maiding the ineffective Santon. I doubt Hoots will knack him out doing the same thing. Still, everyone wins, if he is rubbish, he’s gone. If he’s great he might be back on an elastic band.

  5. @NEWKIE

Money is relative. £60k is peanuts for Mark Zuckerberg (still only 29!).

60p is peanuts for you but it’s more money than your average Zimbabwean earns all day.

I’m not sure what you mean when you saw him ‘saw him play harder in France’. Do you mean he ran more or faster?

I don’t think he needs to push your body to the limits based on his performances this season or last season. He’s way ahead of everyone else creatively. Why does he need to push himself harder?

  6. In the same way that certain people mature into good CDM’s as they get older I think Jonas will do an excellent job in that role for Norwich.

  7. We lost 6 league games last season when Marveaux started.

4 defeats in a row around Christmas & New Year. 3 of those games were against Man Utd, Arsenal & Everton.

I can’t really remember the Everton game but i do remember we definitely deserved a draw if not a win against Man Utd & Arsenal.

We also haven’t lost a league game this season when Marveaux has started 😆

  8. 2012/2013
Average shots per game when Marveaux starts – 13.72
Average shots per game when he doesn’t start – 9.73

    2013/2014
Average shots per game when Marveaux starts – 20
Average shots per game when he doesn’t start – 14.29

      (Quote)

  9. 2012/2013 – Average shots on target (per game)

    When Marveaux doesn’t play – 4.93 shots
When Marveaux is a sub – 7.29 shots
When Marveaux starts the game – 7.78 shots

So basically, when Marveaux plays we hit the target 50% – 60% more.

    Maybe it’s just a coincidence…..
or maybe he times his passes better than everyone else,
puts the right amount of pace on the ball & has better vision.

His weakness is that he is soft, like Coutinho.

I’d play him ahead of Cabaye.
Cabaye holds too much influence in the dressing room.
If i was Marveaux & had to compete against Cabaye, i’d be worried against turning the dressing room against me.

      (Quote)

  10. Interesting reading the support for Marveux and comments saying he should start. Not sure where? He disappoints me when pushed out to the flanks always looks to play centrally. There we have Tiote, Anita and Cabaye. Pardew plays Tiote and Anita for defensive qualities so that only leaves Cabaye.

Have we not had any offers for Cisse Offside yet. Surely a championship club could be interested

      (Quote)

  11. Why would Katharina Liebherr want to sell the club unless it was costing money to run?

Anyway, i’d look to get rid of the following this summer:

    Coloccini
    STaylor
Streete (because i haven’t seen him play)
Good (if he is no good)

    Cabaye
    Gosling
    Obertan
    Shola

That’s more than i expected. Looks like we need a couple of centre backs, a couple of strikers & a winger.

      (Quote)

  12. @Toby le Rhone

I think Anita should be the first name on the team sheet.

If we play 3 in midfield then it’s between Tiote, Cabaye & Marveaux (Ben Arfa too!)

Tiote has performed better than Cabaye & so has Marveaux.

Therefore Tiote, Anita & Marveaux.should be starting.
    Cabaye would sulk.
Marveaux become a dressing room outcast & would lose his confidence (if he had any).

He’s singing songs now you know 🙄

  14. Aha!! Caught by Tsunki on both blogs. Are you telling porkies about me on here? A man of my seriosity should get the respect he deserves. Also my musical talents are undeniable as anyone who has heard me sing on here can attest.

  15. There is great healing capacity in music Tsunki mate. Put on your ipod and play some Captain and Toenail. Revel in it. Run about swinging your arms around you. There now, doesn’t that feel better?

      (Quote)

  16. Good mates on here please pay no attention whatsoever to Tsunki as he has clearly overdosed on the footy blogs. I’m sure the music will fix that but it may take time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Tsunki.

  17. Dave yeah ha ha I know I was trying to take a break from the blogs and sample reality for a while but I figured if I just did a couple of posts on Eds site I could stop. Hundreds of posts later and now I am dual – blogging. I need help 😆

  18. We’ve all known that for some time now Tsunki. And we will help you. Put your clothes back on, come inside and listen to reason mate!

  19. No we don’t hate you Tsunki lad. Now put down that riding crop. That’s not the answer. At least I don’t think it is. I think you need a little Neal Diamond to set you straight.

      (Quote)

  20. Well I’m exhausted with trying to help Tsunki on 2 blogs. It’s a lot to ask of me. I will sneak back on here when Tsunki’s not looking. Don’t tell him though. I don’t want to hurt his feelings. Mums the word mates. 😎

  21. @Kimtoon

Pardew has suggested he will play Marveaux. My guess is he will be used as a sub for 20mins or 30mins for a couple of games.

After that he’ll probably disappear before leaving the club in the summer. La Liga would be a good league for him. He would do well at Everton, Swansea etc.

We’re so wasteful with talented players. That’s what annoys me most. We have players who are being limited & it really does have a big impact on their careers.

      (Quote)

  22. I’ll be glad when this transfer window closes. Sick of us being linked with good players and nothing ever comes of it. Take a nice vacation Kinnear on Ashley’s expence.

      (Quote)

  23. Luuk De Jong seems like a realistic transfer. He looks like he could be a better version of Shola & isn’t Shola coming to the end of his contract?

We don’t know what’s happening with Remy & his court case until at least February.

That leaves us with Cisse & Gouffran. I would expect plans are in place to sign another striker.

Do i want Luuk De Jong here? Yes, as a replacement for Shola. He has potential too.

Would i be disappointed if we don’t bring him in? Not much. He seems decent but fairly average

      (Quote)

  24. KK I don’t know how hard it is to find a replacement for Shola. There’s bound to be championship players out there better than him. It shouldn’t really be a big deal finding someone better than him. Remy or Cisse on the other hand would need more planning and skill to replace.

      (Quote)

  25. I think we will signings in the summer, last season most of the signings were brought forward from the close season to the January transfer window, this season there is no need to bring them forward. But we will see quite a few signings I think. Of the first team, we will lose certainly or almost certainly. Jonas, Shola Ameobi, Remy, Cabaye. and maybe.. Coloccini, Taylor, Cisse, Ben Arfa, Obertan, Gosling, Marveaux. That is basically all of the strikers, captain, and some key players may need to be replaced after this season. There needs to be some good signings if we are to survive that.

      (Quote)

  26. I wouldn’t mind taking a chance on De Jong for a Cisse swop. If De Jong is a flop for scoring 6 goals in 23 appearances, then what does that make Shola? I’m assuming he is a target man / hold up striker? Some CF’s average that amount anyway and create more chances rather than scoring their own goals. I do think Cisse will return to form but I think he has had the confidence sapped from him at Newcastle and the fact is we just do create the sort of chances he needs often enough for him. In the same season Shola scored 1 goal in 23 appearances. 😛

      (Quote)

  27. Andy Carroll ~ Circa. £15,000,000 and £80,000-per-week wages to resign from Liverpool. In 16 months 25 apps and 7 goals.

Yoan Gouffran ~ £500,000 Reportedly around £16,000-per week In 12 months 36 apps and 12 goals.

I can’t believe no-one will make an offer for Gouffran and they won’t have to offer him a better contract.

      (Quote)

  28. <<<<<<, would keep cisse meself hes proved he can score goals dejong struggled in a league very much like ours and theres no guartee he will do any better in the prem 😯

      (Quote)

  29. De Jong has scored 6 goals in 36 Bundesliga games for Gladbach, however he has yet to find the target this season in 13 attempts.

be carefull what ya wish for

      (Quote)

  30. cisse has scored more than him plus hes had more wrongfull offside 8 goals than dejong has accually scored lol

      (Quote)

  31. ICE@234-Agree completely mate I remember the thread of when he signed and I was very excited to see him sign, I’d mentioned him a few times but thought he was going to Liverpool for sure. He hasn’t lived up to my expectations though, still a good player but like you say, not sure whether he fancies the hard work.

KK-If you think it’s ok to expect a minimal work rate from someone with a bit more talent than others in the squad that’s up to you mate, I would rather see everyone graft. **** me it’s not like he’s Ibrahimovic or something is it.

      (Quote)

  32. I have to be honest, it’s getting bloody funny how Cisses offside goals have become a justification of keeping him 😆
The offside goals don’t count people!

It’s like crediting Krul with a save for a conceded goal coz he got a hand to it 😆

      (Quote)

  33. SHARPY17
me point was cisse has scored more than 6 in the last 36 games plus add to that cisses also had more goals ruled offside than dejong has scored 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Sharpy-exactly. I’ve never seen it’s like tbh, and I’m sure every month the number of disallowed goals from last season increases as well 😆

I see long has gone to Hull then, Jelavic and Long aint a bad front line actually.

      (Quote)

  35. NEWKIE
it aint gone up he had 7 last season and 1 this season makes 8 in total 😯 dint worry bud i let ya no if theres another injustice ie a cisse disallowed goal for offside when he was really onside 😆

  36. but hey lets lisern to the all the numptys and get rid of our 20 goal a season striker 😯

      (Quote)

  37. TAE, agree, would not be swapping Cisse for De Jong, who doesn’t convince me tbh, I see him as Sholas replacement .

      (Quote)

  38. @ KIMTOON
if its a cash deal and to replace shola thats 1 thing if it involves geting rid of cisse for him in a straight swap thats a different matter 😆

      (Quote)

  39. Kim
    He sounds like an arsehole.
    Get rid.
17 games without even being in the squad when fit is astonishing for a player of his possible ability.
If he actually gave a flying eff about playing, then after a few games out the squad you would have thought that he would up his training work rate. He clearly hasn’t so is now just a drain on our club. Sell sell sell ❗

      (Quote)

  40. Agree TAE, we have no idea how he’ll cope with the PL and considering the small return of goals he has in the Bundesliga which isn’t that different to the PL , it’s a concern . Now as a shola replacement who doesn’t score much fair enough but a fully firing Cisse ,nope not for me. How would people feel a month from now if Cisse was banging them in in Germany and De Jong can’t cut it with us. I’m not writing him off and would like to see him come in but not for Pappiss .

      (Quote)

  41. @ KIMTOON
he aint done very well in germany and there league is about the closest thing to our league there is

      (Quote)

  42. TAE-I’m not going to get involved with the offside fight, everyone seems to be disagreeing over how many are in Europe. I remember two or three from the league, mainly the one v Mackems. He also had offside goals wrongly ruled onside. Maybe if someone wants to collate a video of all of these goals from last year we can have a look at them again.

The goal he scored this year the keeper had seen the call and didn’t bother diving for – can you really count that? Were others the same last year? In any case it’s a really boring argument and anyone that thinks Cisse did well last year is kidding themselves.

I’ve not said I’d swap him for De Jong, I just want to see De jong on loan.

      (Quote)

  43. NEWKIE says

In any case it’s a really boring argument and anyone that thinks Cisse did well last year is kidding themselves

so in your opion who in our team light the world up last season ❓

      (Quote)

  44. Kim,

I sense a bit of favoratism, or even hypocrisy there from AP. If shola cant even put in a decent effort during a game, I struggle to see how he would do so in training. I am also certain if cabaye went around training in a strop like early season, then he would still start. Two and a half years without faith or encouragement. AP needs to use his man mgmt skills here

      (Quote)

  45. TAE-Where did I say anyone lit up the world? 😕

Ba was very good for us that’s for sure. Santon and Benny started the season very well as well. Perch was solid and Haidara made a great start for his age and being relatively unknown.

      (Quote)

  46. Solano, Well they say 2 sides to every story so it could just be Pards using it to justify his non selection who knows, but yeah if true then it’s poor form on Marvs part. Maybe Marv is scared of another injury and won’t push himself that far in training or on a match day because of it . Or maybe he feels Pards doesn’t understand how best to utilise him and is disheartened by the calibre of player he rates ahead of him for the bench like Oba or Sammi , Pards actually singles out Sammi in that link as having as much right to start as Marv .

      (Quote)

  47. TAE – are those 20 offside or actual goals per season?
Cisse has 22 goals in 65 appearances for NUFC – which is not 20 goals per season.
He hit 37 goals in 65 appearances for Freiburg – (wiki stats).

I’m not saying De Jong is better. I’m not saying that I want to swap Cisse for De Jong either.
But it gets silly on this blog when people wax lyrical about players who are close to being as good as they make out.

Cisse should be getting more game time than he has so far this season IMO. But he is not a 20 goals per season player – Ben Arfa is not as good as people believe him to be – and Marv is not going to create 50 goals per season.

      (Quote)

  48. @SHARPY17
if you add the goals he scored to his offside tally hes a 20 goals a season striker, and a lot of them decision were bad against him last season in my view.

  49. @ SHARPY17
when you think of how the team struggled last season would put his real tally in prospective
