Adios Jonas!

Jonas and Hughton reunited
Jonas and Hughton reunited
The news that Jonas Gutierrez has now departed Newcastle and joined Norwich is old news, but I’ve not had a chance to write about it as yet so here goes.

It may only be a temporary switch for now, but I get the feeling if he impresses at Carrow Road then Chris Hughton will look to make the move permanent in the summer. That’s if he is still in charge of the Canaries by then.

In many ways it is quite fitting that Jonas has moved to Norwich to be with Chris Hughton once more. For me both of those, among others, are synonymous with our promotion from the Championship and subsequent solidification in the Premier League once more.

However chance for Gutierrez have become harder to come by in recent months. Once one of the first names on the team sheet under Hughton and latterly Alan Pardew, Jonas has only made two league appearances this season although I suspect that would have been more had it not been for injury.

Of course for the accountants it’s no doubt great news. Contracted with us until 2015 it’s more than likely one high wage earner trimmed from the bill – wages that are unlikely to be ploughed back into the club by covering wage costs of a new player.

I still think it’s kind of sad though, in an emotional way, just because Jonas has been with us for a while and stuck (whether through choice or necessity) with us in our darkest recent hours.

But then you have to look at it sensibly. Jonas probably wants to be playing football and if he can’t get it here then quite rightly he’ll want to get it elsewhere. Emotion aside, could anyone really justify a place in the side for Jonas as things stand? How many times has his ability to win a free-kick been used a reason to justify him? Or his work-ethic? 198 appearances with 11 goals and not many more assists speaks volumes.

It could have been different though and I thought it would have been when I recall his debut at Old Trafford. He was exceptional that day and his performance left many fans purring but that was to be an exception rather than the norm.

This is not to say he won’t be missed. A senior member of the squad and reportedly well-liked within the camp he will be, as a person, but as a player perhaps not so much? I wish him all the best and hope his move works out for him, apart from when we play Norwich of course.

All the best, Jonas!

  1. TAE- Why phrase a question like that then? It leads to the implication that I suggested someone lit up the world for us. I never said that. However if you wanted to ask me who did better than Cisse, well theres the start of your list for a start 😉

He only becomes a 20 goal a season striker if you want to count all his Europa matches. Unfortunately for him he doesn’t get the chance to boost his stats against opposition like that every year and have those extra games. Let’s say he scored 4 legit league goals last year. That’s still 12 in 36 games or something. Half of the season he was the pinnacle of our attack, everything was built on him, and he still only pulled a couple out the hat. People say we made no chances but the stats don’t back that up and Ba seemed to do fine.

  3. TAE-I have faith in Cisse to score goals, after all that is the only thing he is good for and about the limit of his ability and unfortunately he can’t bring others into play as well as most strikers for the top 10 clubs can do. But I don’t have faith that he can consistently score 20 a season. He’s managed it twice in his career and that includes playing in the French second and third divisions, not massively inspiring. He should be at the peak of his ability now though so who knows.

True, but I think I’m with Pardew on this. Someone getting picked ahead of you is not a valid reason to not apply if yourself in training.
If he had been working hard and Pardew had resisted giving him a chance then fine. But he clearly hasn’t.

  5. If we are loaning a player, I’d rather get Zaha than De Jong personally as I think he’d offer more.

I’d like us to sign Finnbogason and Vossen up front

  6. SHARPY aye mate its owr much for long when he out of contract soon, but if he keeps them in PL 7mil is cheap for them if you look at it that way 😉

  7. @KIMTOON

    Thanks for the link.

It seems like predictable stuff from Pardew. Everybody has a chance but only when his favourites are injured/suspended.

In every Marveaux vs Cabaye stat i’ve seen, Marveaux has been better than Cabaye at almost everything except for tackling.

As for Cabaye’s tackling, i’d rather he didn’t tackle because he’s quite reckless when he does.

Hopefully somebody puts in a £15m+ bid for Cabaye & we let him go but i expect we’ll only sell him after the World Cup.

      (Quote)

  8. @NEWKIE

When you say Marveaux outs in very little effort, what do you mean by it?

Do you mean he doesn’t run much or run quick?

    How are you measuring effort?

      (Quote)

  9. Ice – put like that mate you’re right, but I didn’t have Hull in the bottom 3 before signing Long to be honest mate. They’ll be bottom 6-7 I think but would dodge the drop – in my world anyway 😆

  10. Marvauex needs to replace on of the midfield three.

He is the only one of the them who is comfortable in the final third.

The Tiote, Cabaye and Anita are all very good players, but they should be used in squad rotation according to the opposition.

      (Quote)

  11. KK
How about measuring effort based on Pardew’s comments? Sure it doesn’t fit the “saviour Marveaux” bill, but maybe the manager actually being quoted saying as such holds more weight than any of us guessing?

  12. Richie, there are two videos.
There have been two incidents in two weeks. One was an Afrikaans couple. The others were British tourists.

    Both idiots.

      (Quote)

  13. Also Richie, in the film the women are saying in Afrikaans, “he’s filming it through the sun roof, he’s going to die”. The guy standing out the sun roof was British. 😉

God, that’s so incredibly stupid. Doing the British tourist reputation a lot of good. 🙄
On a lighter note, have you watched the battle of kruger video? Awesome video.

  15. Sky reported that the elephant wasn’t provoked. But the video evidence clearly show it was. Gave three warning charges and the guy just kept filming.

You don’t mess with an elephant bull on musth. I was a field guide for a year. Walked into lion, buffalo herd, rhino. I was fine, but an elephant bull looking to mate. This guy clearly didn’t have a clue and that kind of behaviour he should be locked up in jail. Yet the poor elephant gets the death penalty.

  16. Solano @323,
Ye incredible video. Its my favourite place on Earth, Kruger. But I see these incidents more and more often.

Its not just tourists. We have stupid locals doing to same thing. Every time the poor elephant gets a bullet in the head. 😥

  17. Don’t seem to be a hint of a transfer.

This time last year we were in for five ❗ Surely we can do one this time.

  19. @SolanosTrumpet

I don’t have stats for the 2011/2012 season but your stats show that Cabaye was top tackler for that season not top midfielder. That’s exactly the point i made 🙄

Tackling isn’t the only Cabaye is better at than Marveaux but from an attacking point of view, Marveaux is much better. You can’t just say it’s pure bull before looking up the facts 🙄

‘How about measuring effort based on Pardew’s comments?’ – How about not? A comment or an opinion is not objective, lets measure effort using facts & not opinions.

Let’s also not forget that Pardew has a record of struggling to accommodate attacking players – he put Marlon Harewood ahead of Tevez!

Who said anything about “saviour Marveaux”? It’s not like we’re in a relegation battle & need saving but there is no doubt that the team would be more creative & score more goals with Marveaux in the team.

      (Quote)

  20. Still not getting the Marv love in. I had high hopes of him myself but the only times he played moderately well were in games against poor opposition. He had a real chance when Pardew started him early last season at Everton. He took him off at half time for his pathetic non efforts. That’s my main memory of Marv.

There’s got to be a good reason for his lack of playing time. We’re crying out for creativity yet AP prefers Obertan. I don’t agree with that but over 2 seasons there’s something not right about the guy.

      (Quote)

  21. Georgio
That’s exactly my thinking. There’s clearly something that isn’t Pardew’s defensive-mindedness that prevents him from playing Marv.

      (Quote)

  22. KK
You said you would rather he didn’t tackle as he is quite reckless. So you want someone that was the top tackler in the league to stop ❓
The second link I posted highlights Cabaye’s creative input.
Sorry, where are these stats that show Marveaux is putting in effort?
None of us have anything to prove that. The only thing that carries weight is Pardew’s comments. Why the hell would he lie about that?!

      (Quote)

  23. JJ ” You don’t mess with an elephant bull on musth. I was a field guide for a year. Walked into lion, buffalo herd, rhino. I was fine, but an elephant bull looking to mate.

bad experience on a night out JJ? 😉

Those daft tourists got what they deserved mind, real shame about the elephant.. Also on another south african/animal related note, what’s your opinion on the animals that parks breed to get shot by hunters? While I still think those shooting them are complete ****** I heard a pretty convincing argument about it at least meaning there was a reason to put effort and resources into breeding these animals-even if it is just to take money off the ****** in the first place (hopefully you aren’t one of those I was referring to 😛 )

      (Quote)

  24. Whether Marv is the right man or not, we need to sacrifice a on of the midfielders in our side that likes to play deep for someone who is creative in a more advanced role behind the striker.

Someone who will play those through balls, spread it wide to the overlapping fullbacks or wings out wide and try to get into the box when the ball goes wide.

The sad thing is I don’t even think we are looking… Let alone making bids for that type of player.

      (Quote)

  25. KK-Both. To me he hasn’t looked to take on as many opponents man for man, he has still caused real trouble running at defences centrally, usually with his skill and tight control-but he has never seemed to scare a full back like I saw him do for Rennais. He’s probably still in Danny Rose’s pocket 👿

      (Quote)

  26. Solano-we should have gone for him when he was still at Reading 😕 He isn’t amazing and can go missing in games, but would add so much balance to our first 11 it would be unbelievable and he would certainly chip in with a fair few. Maybe when Spurs have their next clear out eh?

      (Quote)

  27. He’s young, talented, proven experience in the Prem, can play behind the striker or on the wing, likely to be looking for a transfer as he wasn’t get much of a look in under AVB (only started 8 Prem games last year), even less under Sherwood. Perfect.
There you go Kinnear, done your job for you 😎

      (Quote)

  28. Newkie,
Why do you think I’m so bitter. That elephant left his mark. 😉
I’ve had a couple run ins with elephants. Only times I’ve ever felt like helpless and completely at the mercy of an animal. But that only makes me respect them more. Only mosquito and ticks scare me more.

As for those idiots who breed for canned hunting. They’re probably the same arseholes who organise the tracking of rhinos for their horns.

Their is no “hunt” involved. The animals are bred by men, so they are basically tame and don’t run away. Even then they are drugged with tranquilizers and placed in a fenced cage where there is no escape.

Its so cruel because the “hunters” are not trained so they don’t know how to fire a rifle properly. its hardly ever a clean kill. And then they get their photo taken as if they’re some hero.

I happily line those farm owners up along with the hunters and shot them myself without one ounce of regret.

But as you can tell from my posts. I’m not really a people person. I’d pick the animal most times. 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie
Yeah I think that’s been the case at Spurs, but he was top class at Swansea during his spell there. Definitely a potential we should be looking at.

      (Quote)

  30. @SolanosTrumpet

He was top tackler two seasons ago. If he gets up to that level again i’d be perfectly happy for him to tackle but otherwise i would say he is quite reckless.

‘The second link I posted highlights Cabaye’s creative input.’ – the second link you posted is the same as the first link…

What stats do you want to see that show effort for a number 10?

Marveaux might be lazy in training (or he might not be) but he’s produced on the pitch where it counts.

      (Quote)

  31. JJ 😆

Aye I can imagine elephants up close must be terrifying. Scariest I had was climbing out of my tent at night to go for a **** on Mt Kenya and switching my torch on only to see about 20 water buffalo chilling out in the same direction, funnily enough I managed to hold it in after that. They were fine that night but on the way down they gave us a little chase. My parents lived in Zambia just before I was born though so those proper treks on foot sound amazing.

As for the hunters-I completely agree with you on them, the people shooting at animals from a nice spot on high with high powered rifles are complete c***s Unfortunately they are the type of people this world will never be rid of – so if it lessens wild hunting, is it a good thing? Thing is usually we that line trotted off by a toff but this was my eco friendly stoner buddy and I thought, maybe it is better so at least some of them are preserved 😕 I dunno, interesting topic though I thought.

      (Quote)

  32. @NEWKIE

Yep, i agree, he doesn’t look like he runs as much or as fast as he used to. I just put that down to the fact that at 27 going on 28, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to out-muscle or outpace a full back.

I think raw pace is something you only really have in your early 20’s & players that keep pushing themselves jeep getting injured (Micheal Owen comes to mind).

      (Quote)

  33. JJ…The blue car with the Brit girl in(her boyfriend was South African) in it has no body filming from the sun roof…possibly because it doesn’t have one 😉
…that’s not to say they weren’t idiots as the elephant gave them enough opportunities to back off and they were far too close to it anyway, as you say a huge shame about the elephant.

      (Quote)

  34. KK-If he were 30 or 31 fair enough, but he should still have the hunger to do it. I understand his injuries will likely have hampered him long term, and particularly damaged his confidence to try anything too much too soon, but for me he just doesn’t even look hungry to try it. If he just didn’t have the legs to beat a man-like Jonas is now-then fair enough. But he just doesn’t seem to have the heart to try it and for that I am not best pleased. He’s a good crosser of the ball but we only see him clip it in if others have already provided the space with an overlap-there should still be some full backs he can take on.

      (Quote)

  35. @solanostrumpet

Thanks for the link, there are some good comparisons there.

From what i can see Cabaye did well at tackles, assists, creating clear cut chances & interceptions.

However, last season Mafv provided more assists & created more chances than cabaye & everyone else at the club.

An interesting thing was that cabaye was not being compared to mata or silva as they were classed as wide midfielders so perhaps marveaux vs cabaye is unfair?

Perhaps it should be marveaux vs ben arfa?

I only suggested marveaux vs cabaye because there have been a few games where cabaye has been played as a number 10.

I think JJ is probably right. There should be 2 deep midfield positions & it should be competed for by Cabaye, Anita, Tiote & Sissoko.

We should have 1 attacking mid no 10 role & it should be Marveaux vs Ben Arfa.

      (Quote)

  36. @newkie

I’d like to see Marveaux be a bit more confident & agressive but either that just isn’t his personality or he’s had it taken away from him.

In that regards i’d compare him to obertan although Marveaux can still produce whereas obertan just panicks.

Shola is also the same but he’s grown a thick skin. So many times he goes in for a fair challenge but because of his size he gets penalised & we all moan that Shola keeps giving away free kicks.

I think we need some psychologists at the club & they need to put the aggression into some players in the same way diego simeone has done.

Mike Ashley is a very secretive football club owner without a Chief Executive.

Any hope of Mike Ashley appointing Cortese as Derek Llambias’ long term replacement?

It would be good for Mike Ashley & the club. Not so good for Joe Kinnear or Pardew.

The big question is what would motivate Cortese to join us?

  39. Javi Garcia & Nemanja Matic were considered no good before they went to Benfica.
At Benfica both have apparently become very good defensive midfielders. Is it just a coincidence or is there 1 coach or more that helped both players develop so well.

Or maybe something they ate or drank lol.

  41. Here’s an important news flash mates. Newcastle United are having difficulty signing players. Apparently the other clubs keep asking for money. And in a stunning development apparently the players all have agents who want to be paid as well. No wonder Joe is in shock to say nothing of Mike. 🙁

  42. A typical day at work for Joe starts with a late arrival at the club with a hangover and some hair of the dog. Then a quick trip down to the tea lady to cop a feel. Then…. some lunch? Something tasty with several pints. Then back to the office to phone some old mates and pretend to make some transfer deals. Then a quick tour round the training ground to tell Kebab to get stuck in. Knock off for the day and spend several hours at the pub. Finish the day with a quick call to Mike at the castle to tell him there are some big possibilities of free transfers to come. Beautiful.

    4. Avoid Mc Donalds even if Ashley recommends it
    5. Avoid being seen in Newcastle because there’s a lot of angry fan’s
