Game On! Norwich v Newcastle

Magpies take on Canaries
Magpies take on Canaries
Good evening all. Just a quick article here to take you through the clash with Norwich this evening.

Why is it quick? Well because I’m slaving away at work once more so haven’t had much time to get anything done recently but hopefully the game tonight will give you all enough to talk about anyway and the relative shortness of this article will not be noticed much.

I’ve gone into the fixture in more detail in the match preview which you can view here including injury news for both sides, a history of the fixture and some fun facts and stats for you to run your eyes over. Please take some time to have a look if you haven’t already done so.

The game itself is not being shown live here in the UK but will be broadcast on a number of overseas channels so hopefully picking up a stream won’t be too much of an issue. I suspect it might be though so if you do happen to stumble across a stable stream then please share it with your fellow fans and post a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Early team news has been touched upon in the previously linked match preview but for official team news please check the bottom of this article roughly one hour before kick-off where you should find it in all of its glory.

Howay the lads!

  1. Promising noises coming out from the club anyway.
I know not everyone agrees – but selling players and reinvesting really is the only way we will ever have a chance of making CL.
If we spend the Cabaye cash now or in the summer (though we should also have the extra TV money by then), I will have no complaints.

  2. ST…I wouldn’t say very good(yet) but he certainly has the potential.

I can’t remember if I read it on here are somewhere else someone saying that if Cabella/Grenier were so good why don’t PSG buy one of them cheaper than it would cost to get Cabaye and they’d also get more years out of them. The simple answer is because they don’t have too, PSG want players who are already the finished article and not ones they need to develop for the future, they have so much cash they don’t need to worry about “minor” things like re-sale value. We on the other hand want to buy them in, develop them a bit and sell at a profit.

With Cabaye PSG could surely have got him before we bought him and now they are willing to pay a fortune and all that after Pard’s has coached all the skill out of him….haha cheers suckas 😉 😆

  3. Richie-yeah I’d seen him go down with cramp, wasn’t sure if it was something reported after the match but I guess not. If he’s on for Saturday then it’s a big chance for him.

      (Quote)

  4. Richie@302-exactly that. They want the finished article + the fact that Blanc has a massive stiffy for the Dreamboat and he wasn’t PSG boss when we signed him.

      (Quote)

  5. Pardew said that HBA had spent time in bed being sick this week and rran out of steam. Not a serious injury. So that means he’s out for the season?

  6. If players are unsure whether to join us they should look at Cabayes progression here; He was initially pencilled in as one of the two sitters with Ben Arfa as the number 10 and Jonas and Barton as the two wide players and had played just twice for the french team.

Hes leaving a wonderful creative number 10 and a regular starter for the national team. With his reputaion at an all time high, If Grenier wants to improve his chances at international level he could do a lot worse than us…

Sorry please tell me which supporters demand success NOW? We have waited nearly 60 years for a trophy, so please don’t label us as impatient. That’s the most over used and totally unfounded misrepresentation of NUFC fans.

      (Quote)

  8. I’m pleased we are going for Grenier and I’m sure our bid is a genuine attempt to sign the player.
But the reality is that we have only sold Cabaye for a huge fee and I’ve no doubt that Lyon will expect the same. They currently sit 5th in Ligue 1 and probably have a champions league place in mind.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t be going for him, I’m just pointing out that we sold Cabaye coz we’ve got nowt left to play for this season – whereas Lyon have so are unlikely to let their better players go with little time to replace them – unless it’s crazy money.
That’s my opinion like, I’m sure most will reckon its coz were not working on transfers

      (Quote)

  9. “Grenier is known to recite the words to Blaydon Races in French every night before going to bed and has a unique talent which incredibly makes Mike Ashley pay actual money for a player.”

    Wikipedia. 😆

If Cabaye is a French international, in his prime. Going to PSG. And he’s valued at 20 million. Then Grenier should be valued around 12 million pounds.

Pay it and we still make around 6 million profit from this transfer window.

Then next season, we need to get in Gomis on free and sign Remy up permanently. That’d be a decent squad again for very little outlay.

      (Quote)

  10. Sharpy-agreed. And even if we attempt to keep the fee disclosed everyone knows we have money, and they will want that action.

I don’t feel we will get a “replacement” in January-but I am definitely expecting a summer signing.

Not a terrible situation as we can see what our others boys are capable of and it’s not like we’ve got owt to play for anyway.

      (Quote)

  11. JJ-I’d hope we could get Grenier for a little less than that. Ideally under 10. Because if we want Remy he’s going to cost at least 12 mil I reckon 😕 QPR are looking good for promotion.

      (Quote)

  12. Newkie – SSN reckon its in the region of £8.5m, which I think would be enough in the summer when they have time to find a replace.
With 2 days of the Jan window left I think £10-12m is more like what we’ll have to folk.
That likely the case I’d rather sit tight and wait til the summer.

I think we have enough in our squad to finish 8th this season. I was really pleasing to see Sammy and Benny taking their chance last night, and hopefully both will get more game time in the remainder of the season

      (Quote)

  13. Santii – Forget what other people say from outside the region. Which NUFC fans do you know who want success ASAP and aren’t prepared to wait for it? If that was the case we’d have about 5,000 fans per game.

So please don’t just assume the supporters of the other clubs are correct, and ask yourself if we’re impatient and if you think we are I would like an example from you.

      (Quote)

  14. Sharpy

I have to say I thought Taylor did pretty good at the back as well. Though I would still much rather have Williamson & Mbiwa there.

The next 3 games is going to be tough going without our 2 most influential players (Remy & Cabaye) in the team. They would have been tough with them anyway but they look a little bit worse now 😀

I think we have the players to step in and prove themselves.

      (Quote)

  15. Ice-I seem to remember in the summer Cabaye saying he was unhappy and that the person that knew why was Kinnear. If it’s true he never appologised that is really poor behavior. Cabaye was classless by going on strike but he must have felt it was a right circus with Kinnear not bothering to even attempt learning his name or apologise for the insult. Footballers are egotistical and need to be pandered to to an extent, especially the ones that are any good.

I don’t think that is why he moved at all, obviously he wanted out before it. But for all those Ashley lovers Joe Kinnear is the living breathing proof that he can’t be bothered to run this club at optimum-it’s not even about pumping money in, just simple management.

      (Quote)

  16. Sharpy-yeah that was exactly my reasoning.

I guess the other line of thought is that if we get him in now he will be ready for next season, and we will be less likely dropping down the table i.e losing out on finishing place money.

      (Quote)

  17. Maybe we should offer 10 million plus Marv or Oba ,that may swing the deal. It means they have a replacement for the guy plus cash to spend and in terms of wages 1 out 1 in which would please Cashley more than just another player on the books .

      (Quote)

  18. I still think PSG will be the only winners from Cabs’ exit. A quick read of the PSG fans’ comments show that he’ll have a lot more competition for a place there, and there’s a good chance it’ll damage his WC, which in turn will damage his earning potential afterwards. If I’m honest, I am quietly hoping that he regrets leaving. (I know, I know – I’m a terrible person, etc.)

Ashley has dropped a clanger (like he did when failing to do due diligence before buying the club) because come the summer, if he’d held on to Cabs, he’d have a WC-advertised, top-drawer property in a market full of clubs wondering what to do with their extra £60m of TV revenue. IMHO he’s pissed £20m up the wall for no good reason, and he’ll have to splash most of what he got for Yohan to replace him anyway. Now that everyone knows we’re up against it to get a replacement, another 50% goes on all the asking prices.

    Fekking muppetry.

PSG, meanwhile, have money to **** up the wall, so they don’t give a stuff.

Right now, all I care about is that two days ago we were headed for sweet revenge against the scum, and now I think we may get rolled over yet again. That’s not all down to Cabs’ exit, but it certainly won’t bloody well help.

You find fuckwits everywhere, but why do so many of them have to work in football?

      (Quote)

  19. Santii – I personally don’t think Saylor is that bad a defender, yes he has mistakes in him, but he’s not as bad as most make out.
I have said recently that he’d be one I’d get rid of, which sounds hypocritical, but it’s just the fact that he’s on big wages and is so injury prone. MYM is a good player, but I think he’s as error prone as Saylor. His versatility makes him a good player to have and maybe he’s Colos long term replacement.

Ice – Ashley keeps him at the club coz he’s successfully overseen the transfer of Kebab and brought £20m into the club. 🙄 👿

Newkie – I think Grenier would have the time to settle in if signed in the summer. Cabaye hit the ground running when signed and I think it’s a position that would allow him time to bed in – unlike defence or CF I think. However if it does take a little while for him, I think we have players in our squad to play and afford him that time.
I would rather see us sign Gomis now rather than Grenier as I think a CF who can score goals is more of an urgency than the attacking midfielder. But if he can be signed on a free for next season, then again I understand that as well

      (Quote)

  20. Axel – I’d offer Lyon both, but I don’t think they’d ever want to do business with us again if we did 😆

Whumpie – I think the only looser in the deal is Cabaye personally. I think the PSG fans are right, whilst they are getting a very good player, he’s likely to spend alot of time not playing. I don’t think it will effect his international career, but it will not allow him to play with the consistency he does for us now. PSG obviously get a good player and we get £20m.
If that £20m is spent wisely it could get us 2-3 first team players.

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy-true, but Cabaye was a bit older, he had shoes to fill but many were already writing him off before signing him (Troy) and he only came at the cost of 4.5 million. He was also playing alongside Tiote who was a proven monster and undoubtedly made his job easier, they were playing much more alongside each other rather than Cabaye having to dictate the play on his own.

Grenier would come in to the attacking mid role and there would be that bit more pressure and expectation, especially as he will now be viewed as Cabaye’s replacement-anything less and noises will be made, the fee paid, another frenchie, etc etc etc.

      (Quote)

  22. I reckon Sharpy is right. Cabaye is good, and he has certainly been good recently, but he ain’t that good. 23 million for him, take that. He was useless as captain and isn’t as tough or as good as he likes to think he is, not sure he is going to get as much CL football as he thinks he might, although, yes, more than he would get here.

I got the feeling from the beginning his heart wasn’t really in the Toon, plus the bloke went on strike.

Get a good young replacement in and we’ll be fine, we are actually building a club and a squad again here, with great training facilities on the way. We are definitely going in the right direction.

Not everyone can have CL football in the Premiership, and really Man. City, chelsea, Arsenal and Man U should be nailed on for those spots, maybe now and again that will change and some take advantage, but generally we can aspire to try and take advantage but also just enjoy winning more than losing and getting our club basically going in the right direction.

And putting out strong teams for the bloody Cups!

      (Quote)

  23. Why do some people think Marveaux is as bad as Obertan?

If a player can’t get in the team he must be rubbish (Mata), right?

I think we need a very quick direct winger. I don’t think that’s Sammy as he seems to be a good dribbler but not superfast. I’m not sure where Sammy should play long term but i’d want him to go out on loan instead of playing the odd game.

Somebody said Redmond before he went to Norwich & that is the type of player we could do with imo especially as Newkie thinks Cisse needs crosses & we’re interested in De Jong.

      (Quote)

  24. I think Cabaye will be a big looser ( 🙂 ) of the move, especially if PSG do go in for Pogba as is being reported. He could go to Monaco of course but I doubt he will stay in Italy for very long.

      (Quote)

  25. Personally I have liked the look of Marveaux when he has played through the middle. He looks lost on the wing. I’m surprised he hasn’t had more game time as in my opinion after Cabaye he was is our most creative player.

Sammy looked good last night but I’m still not convinced.

Really think we are short of wingers and it’s a position that we really need to strengthen.

      (Quote)

  26. There is no response yet to the Grenier bid I see, makes me think it could be a goer as surely they would of publicly rejected it by now if unhappy with it 😕 . Maybe they are thrashing out a deal both are happy with.

      (Quote)

  27. I just think their is a problem with Marveaux that will only come out after he has left us . He has undoubted abillity and its a shame that he is not getting game time he has looked more than good enough for us when he has played . Its obvious though he wont get into Pards team again so its time too sell him or use him as part of a deal too get someone else in .

      (Quote)

  28. Jesus wept. Reading the BBC article going on about how good Liverpool are. Their fans saying they are doing well without splashing the cash! They have a net spend of 60 million in the last three years. No CL money bankrolling them at all. I’d say we’re some of the most realistic fans in the league.

      (Quote)

  29. We bring Luuk De Jong in, he does well & we make it permanent in the summer.

Remy is not guilty & nobody else in the league is interested in him or as appealing as us. We sign him up permanently in the summer (Everton could be interested in the summer 😯 )

    Cisse, De Jong, Remy, Gouffran

    Ben Arfa, MARVEAUX, Grenier

    Tiote, Sissoko, Anita, Bigirimana

    Debuchy, Santon, Hadaira, Dummett

    Williamson, Mbiwa

I’d want Colo & STaylor replaced & a very quick winger but otherwise we seem to be strong everywhere.

If we sign Grenier, Luuk De Jong & Remy does Kinnear get credit.

Martinez & Rodgers were both at smaller clubs & both have helped their new teams progress.

Has Pardew done the same? What’s our playing style?? Hold on until 60mins, bring Ameobi on & nick a goal for a glorius 1-0!

    HWTL!!!!

      (Quote)

  30. @Oblong

You have a good opinion but you shouldn’t be surprised that Marveaux is our most creative player AHEAD of Cabaye.

Marveaux creates twice as many chances as Cabaye & last season was up there with the like of Mata. That’s incredible considering how rubbish the rest of the players were around him.

Axel makes a good point too. If Pardew has frozen Marveaux out then we need to let him go…..let Pardew go that is……the little chode
