Game On! Chelsea v Newcastle

Game on at Chelsea!
Game on at Chelsea!
Hello all and welcome to this ‘Game On’ article which will take us through our tussle at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

You may have noticed that there is no match preview for this game. There are two reasons for that, the main one being that my lad spilt something on my laptop and now half of the keys won’t work so I’m reduced to writing on my phone which is tricky to say the least.

Anyway hopefully it will only be a short term issue until I can get it fixed or replaced. Speaking of short term issues, our lack of available players will also hopefully be a short term issue. We’re missing a few for this one but you’ll be able to see the official team news at the bottom of this article.

The game itself is not being shown live here in the UK but it is being broadcast across the globe so picking up a stream shouldn’t be too difficult. If you do find a particularly decent stream then please share it by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

After the derby defeat last weekend the only way to bounce back is with a win but at Stamford Bridge that won’t be easy so perhaps we should be looking for a vastly improved performance instead?

Howay the lads!

So Ashley would have spent £40m on Ozil. bare minimum investment. Right.
wtf does this mean ❓ ❓

      (Quote)

  2. I see Pards is saying how Cisse will be important to us for the run in. Cisse must feel good about that having been cast aside for goal machine Shola.

It’s odd to see you complaining about Ashley not investing.

You seem to often take the position that we’re doing perfectly well in line with our financial resources.

    @troy
Yes, i would suggest we should get a relatively ‘unknown’ (very well known overseas) manager in the style of Martinez and Rodgers.

I’m a fan & there are a lot of managers that would meet my expectations.

Mike Ashley’s tight constraints are only tight for the Premier League. No other league has as much money so managers from other leagues are used to having to work with very little.

    Pellegrini is a perfect example.

      (Quote)

  4. No one expects Ashley to be spending £40M on a single player.
But four good players at the £10M price would be one hell of an improvement.

      (Quote)

  5. We are well and truly in a pickle again with Ashley refusing to spend even a minimum amount. Two straight windows with no permanent signings. Ashley will hide even deeper in the castle now and let Pardew spout his bollocks. Ashley doesn’t have a clue about football and doesn’t have a crony who has a clue either so we are in deep doodoo.

  6. Sharpy 17, Troy…don’t worry lads, this is me towing the line and fighting back from the banter this morning of me being cast as a negger…

I’m not defending any of the croutons running our club, in fact I’m furious about the whole state of affairs. The sale of Cabaye is the straw that broke the camels back.

    😆 I’m anti-Ashley now 😆 😆

Well, only until he hires a decent manager or a decent DoF…..or a decent Chief Exec….

He has a lot of hiring to do but please please please sack Pardew, the coaches & the academy staff.

Then go to Spain, Germany or even Southampton & take all their staff.

    Job done!

It can’t be too difficult, can it 😯

The Match of the Day running order is in. Set your evenings to this:

    1. Liverpool/Arsenal, 2. Chelsea/Newcastle, 3. Norwich/Man City, 4. Swansea/Cardiff, 5. Palace/WBA, 6. Saints/Stoke, 7. Villa/West Ham, 8. Sunderland/Hull

  9. It’s not that we played that badly, especially in the first half, but in the attacking third we were absolute dross. Sissoko isn’t an attacking midfielder for me. He has no touch around goal. I hope De Jong comes around. It is still too early to tell but he does look a little slow in the box. Not quick enough to beat top defenders. A worry there already. Sammi had some jump and made a few decent passes. Ben Arfa is worrying. Not the same player he was a couple of seasons ago. Pardew has big problems on his hands and a useless owner behind him.

😆 managing a top club is harder than just buying the best players. It’s not football manager 😆 😆

If it was then Mark Hughes would still be at Man City 😯

  11. There are three units at NUFC…. “the board” (Ashley), the team, and the fans.

Wouldn’t it be a pleasant change if they all pulled in the same direction ?

      (Quote)

  12. Prem/Munich – I have yet to read anyone on here have unrealistic expectation of Ashley to be honest.
Running our club well isn’t just about balancing our books I’m afraid. It’s about the football, it’s about developing a brand and building a global support.
Ashleys priority has never been any of those things – his priority is recouping his debit – it’s isnt football as he’s made it clear he’s not arsed about winning cups or playing in Europe.
Ashleys way of developing the NUFC brand has been to cover it in SD.com. And instead of building a global support he’s done everything he can to **** the current fan base off by employing his mates instead of the best possible person.

But not to worry coz we’ll finish mid table this season 🙄

      (Quote)

  13. KK – you state the bloody obvious, but you talk utter nonsense buddy.
can you answer my question @ 294

      (Quote)

  14. Well I ain’t watching MOTD, can’t be arsed, anyway Lew keeps having coughing fits so I have to turn the volume right down at night ,actually with MOTD commentary that’s no bad thing 😉

  15. Spot on Sharpy @312. I think Munich is just having us on a bit as he says. He knows the Ashley Method just as well as we do mate.

‘Name one of our players that would get into any other EPL team.’

I could name most of the squad 😯

We have good players that our not playing at their best.

It’s the manager’s job to get the best out of individual players & the team.

Look at the difference between Rodgers & Pardew.

    We had Cisse & Ba.
2 different types of forwards players but Pardew struggled to get them both playing well together. FFS he wanted one of them to be a winger!

    Liverpool have Sturridge & Suarez
There was talk about them not being able to play alongside each other when Sturridge was signed.

Rodgers changed his entire formation & style to get the best out of them.

    Did it work??

      (Quote)

  17. Wow! KK. 😯

You are certainly hard to knock back. 😉

However, your reasoning is seriously flawed.

Money spent on players, GENERALLY, reflects on the position you end up in the league.

Great managers can improve on that statistic to an extent but, GENERALLY, only when the investment in one club compared to another is close.

We are so far behind the teams at the top it’s irrelevant.

All we want is for Ashley to spend the cash that is surplus from transfers in and out. No one is asking for him to spend his own money.

I’ll give you an example. Wigan got relegated under Martinez. That’s because he had a budget as small as Stardusts brain.

He now goes to Everton and keeps them at the same level as Moyes left them.

I believe Morinho would end up in the same position as Pards after 3 yrs in charge. To be fair to Mourinho , he would not even lower himself to consider working for Ashley.

      (Quote)

  18. G2 ,I’m very reluctant to slag off De Jong just yet as the guy must be well rusty having had no real game time. I thought he made some intelligent runs, think he just needs game time, hope so anyway. Think he’ll link up well with either papiss or Remy, what you reckon.

      (Quote)

  19. KK you never said if you really thought that Jabba just let DL go ahead and hire his own choice of manager ??

MM I knew you wernt a Jabba scrap man 😉

      (Quote)

  20. This will be the summer that could save Ashley. The guy has one last chance only because of our position in the league.

We need to invest heavily to go forward. Collo, Remy, Barfa, Shola, Marv, Krul, Tiote could leave and a few deadwoods Obertan, Gosling, Sammy, Vuckic, Abeid…etc will probably leave so we need to replace them all and sign more to be stronger.. will it happen 😆 will it fook 😆

We got ne one with a DOF, what chance have we got now… we’re doomed! 👿

      (Quote)

  21. I agree Kimtoon he does get into good positions. I’m hoping for good things from him. We’ll give him some time. He may not do much in our remaining games but we’ll have to make a decision on him. I’m more worried about Ben Arfa by far lass. Have to go for a bit now. Good luck with Lew’s cough.

      (Quote)

  22. i think De Jong will be decent for us.. I also think Mbiwa will come good. He’s showed glimpses of quality but seems unhappy at the mo..

      (Quote)

  23. Munich – just saw your post to me n Troy, scratch your name from my last post then buddy 😉

Kim – Pardew hasn’t given Cisse the steam from **** all season!, but now the brown stuff has hit the fan and he’s realised that he can’t depend on Shola and if Remy isn’t scoring he’s got nee one else.
Trouble is, has he and the bell ends on the board pissed Cisse off too much already this season?
I’m not sure I could blame Cisse if he turned round and said bollocks to Pardew and asked for a move to Turkey or Russia – or whoevers transfer window is still open

      (Quote)

  24. Mark, I like Mbiwa but he sure had a brain fart today with the all in wrestling ,he’ll be asking to borrow Troys shorts and cape next 😆

      (Quote)

  25. @bigdave

I think Derek ran it past Mike Ashley & Mike Ashley approved (perhaps after meeting Pardew in a casino?)

I would have thought Derek said:
‘hey mike, Hughton was taking the players side re the bonuses in their contract, let’s get rid of him’

    Mike Ashley – ‘yeah’

Derek – ‘I’ve got just the right person. He took West Ham to the cup final & nearly won it. I’ll setup a meeting at the casino’.

    Done

      (Quote)

  26. Mark – even if we did invest heavily, in the summer, there is no guarantee they will all gel and hit the ground running.
This game requires constant investment every window.
The Ashley model is deeply flawed and could cost us our Premier league status.

      (Quote)

  27. @bigdave

    Just to clarify.

Mike Ashley knew Derek Llambias wanted to hire Pardew & Mike Ashley approved it as afterall, Derek Llambias is his chief exec.

I don’t think Mike Ashley was involved in going through a list of potential managers.

I think Highton was sacked in the knowledge that Pardew would step in.

      (Quote)

  28. @BB I agree mate.

We’ve missed the boat I reckon. There’s a bigger chance of our better players wanting to leave due to the lack of ambition. I wouldnt blame them..

      (Quote)

  29. The facts are that today’s team is a sad indictment of our transfer policy. Playing a left back in central midfield? Shocking!!!

KK – It’s really simple. If you want an average team you need an average squad and if you want a good team, you need a good squad. We, unfortunately are in the former bracket.

Jabba must go before we fulfil our potential. I’m sick of going to mediocre r us.

      (Quote)

  30. Kim-every player needs to earn their place. Play **** and you lose it. Guessing that’s why Shola is also on the bench. Cisse has underperformed this season whatever excuses are made for him. Let’s hope he takes the chance when he is given it, again.

      (Quote)

  31. @troy
    Thanks 😀
I don’t agree with alot of what you say or do but you’re an inspiration in the way you take abuse & keep coming back. You remind me of someone….Pardew 😆

BTW I don’t think we should be competing at the top.

I do think we should be competing for 4th which is no different to Everton.

We certainly should not be getting less than 60pts in any season with this squad.

The Wigan example you gave is a good one except Martinez has actually improved Everton, not keot them at the same level.

I cannot believe you’re suggesting Mourinho would do no better than Pardew in the same circumstances.

😆 No doubt Pardew’s next job will be at a bigger club then us 😆 😆

Some people think he’s better than Moyes & that Mourinho could do no better than Pardew.

We should expect to see Pardew at Man Utd, Everton, Chelsea, Real Madrid or Inter Milan when he leaves us. 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  32. Kim – he needs Cisse now, maybe more than Cisse needs him/us.
Let’s be right, when Remy and Gouffran are back Cisses still 3rd choice isn’t he – maybe 4th if De Jong starts playing well – but he’ll be ahead of Shola (whos contract runs out this season) so there’s incentive for Cisse

      (Quote)

  33. Let’s be honest, Cisse has been absolutely pish for the last 6 months at least. If he had been any good Pardew would have played him, in fact Pardew DID play him when all a sundry were querying whether Cisse had lost it. He is probably earning min 25K a week and is on a lucrative contract at the toon. That is all the incentive he needs the crouton…that and his own professional integrity. Since we are now shorn of our only creative midfielder then it is going to be even more difficult for the lad…

I’m curious to see how Cisse and De Jong will pair up together …

      (Quote)

  34. @stuart79
I think we have a good squad of players. I think we have the 7th or 8th best squad in the league.

Agreed that Mike Ashley needs to go.

I’m not sure why nobody is onterested in buying us.

We can criticise Mike Ashley but any new buyer will have a financially stable club with a realistic chance of breaking into the top 4 with some additional investment.

It’s not like we’re monaco with no fan base in a lower league.

      (Quote)

  35. Cisse has has poor service in the final third. All of our forwards have had poor service.

Our build up play is too slow. By the time we get to the opposition box it’s too crowded & mire often than not we lose the ball or shoot from outside the area.

    Poor coaching.

Tbh i think we could pick up some very good coaches from Spain, France or Germany & they’d hardly cost anything.

It would probably even reduce the wages we pay now whilst we’ll finally get rid of those that were given jobs because they were one of the old school boys.

      (Quote)

  36. Hahaha. KK. 😮 I have to admit I never agree with any of your points. However, the blog would be a poorer place without you. 😉

Every social congregation has an odd bod that stands out from the crowd. There’s a place for everyone in society. If you weren’t the odd bod KK, it would be someone else, so make the most of your position. You’ve worked hard to get there. 😛

You struggle with the simplest of theories but I put that down to being the odd bod. 😉

Of course Mourinho is a better manager than Pardew, but unlike you, he can see that he would end up a failure at the toon under this regime. 😉

I guarantee you , Pardews job will not be at Chelsea and Mourinhos will not be at the toon. There’s a reason and we can all see it but you can’t.

You still in contact with Aunt Flo and Farmer Barlimow? 😛

      (Quote)

  37. Munich – if we are being honest Shola has been pish for the last 13yrs but has been shown more loyalty and faith from Pardew this season than Cisse has.
I can’t argue that Cisse has played well enough to be an automatic choice – he hasn’t – but neither has Shola.

To be honest, I’d be more interested to see a front 3 of Remy/De Jong/Gouffran so I can’t even say I fully back Cisse. The trouble with that tho is that 2 of those 3 will ****** off at the end of the season so where does that leave us and Cisse

      (Quote)

  38. KK – We have some good players, but we have a **** squad I’m afraid. Clubs with good squads don’t have full backs playing in midfield, have a striker who hasn’t scored all season keep getting a game and bring on a centre half when their full back is injured.

We have needed a couple of strikers for a couple of years now and yet again at the end if this season we will have only one experienced striker on our books. Sorry it’s just not good enough – we deserve better and in fairness so does Pardew. Although my respect for him is diminishing by the day. I ask him – where is your professional pride?

      (Quote)

  39. Well it seems we well and truly blew our load early this season and now we are a flacid **** of a team… so i wasn’t expecting anything from this game..
people are right in saying that Santon should not be played as a mid. He should be played on the bench. He was at fault for the first goal as he didnt track Hazards run. He just jogged slowly back to try and cover. If we are going to lose, give a few youngens a go, at least they might put in some effort..

      (Quote)

  40. Hooray! Hooray! My friend Aussie is here to save the day. ! The day! 😛

Santon was shocking for that goal. Where was the zip! The energy! The desire to win! 🙄

Where was Sissokos zip when he miss controlled the ball for his chance. He lost the ball and went in half hearted.

The Cabaye transfer has affected the players. The evidence is there to see.

The last two games have been lost by lack of belief.

People can blame Pardew. I don’t. He’s a puppet that was identified by a few of us years ago. However, we all know that Ashley can’t be trusted in appointing a manager who has influence on team affairs.

      (Quote)

  41. Stuart79
Completely agree with your gripe about our having defenders being played in midfield, playing a striker who can’t score a goal, and bringing on substitutes to play out of position.
Only a fool does those things.

      (Quote)

  42. Aussie – couldnt agree more mate. Santon has been unbelievably poor recently, both today and the derby he’s looked totally disinterested. I don’t see how Haidara is getting overlooked at the moment.

I also don’t see why people rate MYM so highly either personally. What the hell he was doing for that penalty, and he also made a rash tackle on the end of the box just before that as well.

      (Quote)

  43. Pardew was like the nerdy kid who’s been befriended by the cool kid today!
I think if he could have swapped shirts with Jose today he definately would have.

I fail to understand how the Cabaye transfer has affected the team.
I recall reading a 25 page letter 😀 from a blogger on how overrated Cabaye was , so we should not be missing him.

      (Quote)

  45. clearly the youth setup is doing something right 😕
    Newcastle U18s 2 Bolton U18s 1

Today saw United’s U18 side make it seven successive league and cup victories, when they beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Little Benton.

Goals from Callum Roberts and Joe Kerridge gave the young Magpies a gritty win in difficult conditions.

The Toon teens have now lost just once in eleven games since recording a 1-0 win over the Trotters in Lancashire last November.

Does Pardoom even know we have an U18’s team. I hope not, or they are ******.

      (Quote)

  46. Boots – Joe knew that we had an U18s and that they played at Little Benton but he thought Matt Lucas and David Walliams played for them

  47. Just watching MOTD and the last 3 games have been Norwich v City, Swansea v Cardiff and Palace v WBA. I know it’s just highlights but stand out players – Redmond for Norwich, Routledge and Bony for Swansea and Tom Ince for Palace. 3 players we were heavily linked with and should have signed and 1 that we let go to replace with Obertan.

      (Quote)

  48. @ Sidekick

The 25 page letter was sent to me from my brother but it was about **** and ****. Nowt to do with Cabaye.

I have always stated Cabaye was overrated as a player.

I maintain that. He had his moments but the way some people waxed lyrical about him made me laugh.

That’s my opinion and many will disagree and I accept that.

However, in the dressing room I feel he was a big character. Influential and a natural captain.

To take that person out the dressing room leaves a huge void. The last two games have demonstrated the lack of belief the players have in this regime.

Yes, one player can make a huge difference. Leaders are hard to replace. His football ability was over stated by many but I never doubt his influence in the dressing room full of Frenchmen.

I see this lack of passion continuing until the next big character in the dressing room emerges.

It will happen and the team will pick up again. Of course, vital points have been lost already which have destroyed our season.

      (Quote)

  49. Add Shane Long to my list.

Troy – I agree with you. He’s a talented lad, but not as good as a lot on here would have you believe. But his influence off the pitch and perhaps the statement of his sale without replace sends out to the rest of the players will have a big impact. Plus the players themselves will be looking at it and thinking – what’s left to play for?.
I can’t decide whether its the sale of Cabaye or just returning from injury, but he looks off the boil as well.

      (Quote)

  50. BB my comment re Ozil was in response to somebody saying that our minimum investment was the same as Arsenal or Everton. Whilst there is a case to Everton have spent wisely. Arsenal have the resources t spend £40m on Ozil. Would Ashley? Course not.

To be clear Troy I am not anti Ashley. Whilst he has made PR ****-ups by the score he has also done some good things and our current position is roughly where we would expect. Some good results this season as well as some disappointments.

As to investment we seem to be constantly a few players short. Decent starting 11, poor bench. But that’s not new. A lot of the problems with NUFC I remember going back 40years so to simply blame Ashley as the root of all our problems is unrealistic.

As to Pards I agree with you. OK manager who will keep us top 10 but unlikely to get us further with the resources available. Martinez at Wigan a good example through Bruce & Jewel did better.

With respect to both Ashley and Pardew change is a high risk policy which is more likely to go pear shaped as bring nirvana.

Question. If people believe that Ashley is solely motivated by winding up the fans who will he choose to sell to?

Well if both these players are still considering a move to Newcastle, there is still hope of landing at least 1 of them. It’s just a pity we don’t have a DoF working on a potential deal NOW!. I know we can’t sign the player now but we could possibly do all the negotiation with the club now – and we could certainly sort a deal for Gomis now.

      (Quote)

  52. Also since Ashley owning the club or selling is outside my control I take the “what can’t be cured, must be endured” approach. So not exactly pro Ashley either.

      (Quote)

  53. I agree Troy, Cabaye’s character carried a lot of our players. Even v Sunderland there was a void which none of our current players can fill.

I’m glad someone agrees as I was shot down for suggesting he was a miss 🙄 😀

@Prem. It could be cured if Ashley showed some ambition, the fans wouldnt have to endure the misery he creates. After-all that’s what he came for “a bit of fun”.. lol happy days..

      (Quote)

  54. Prem – I see Ashley as more of a debit manager than a football club owner. His priority is balancing the books, not growing the club. In fact, he’s used the club to grow SD.
Had Ashley came in and immediately installed the people to grow the club as a global brand, which would have increased the fan base and revenue coming into the club then I don’t think fans would dislike him as much.
But his taken no steps to do that. Instead we here that we can’t compete with clubs like Southampton and Swansea when it comes to signing players. I’m all for getting the right player at the right price, but we take the approach that if they want £10m we offer £5m and end up pissing off the selling club.
I don’t believe we are a well ran club mate, but I do think our debit is being well managed – but the the fact that debit is to Ashley himself might explain that one.

      (Quote)

  55. @Sharpy.

Do you think we made honest bids for Cabella & Clement Grenier?

We seem to make a lot of enquiries followed by derisory bids almost as-if we don’t want to buy someone..

      (Quote)

  56. I can’t believe we spent 6 months knowing Cabaye was leaving then spent a month in France while players like Lewis Holtby & T Ince we’re released on loan 🙄 total shambles.

Holtby for Cabaye for now.. and Ince for Jonas..

      (Quote)

  57. Mark – Lyon confirmed that they received a bid from us for Grenier – they’d have no reason to lie that I can think of. My understand is that having received the bid they were obliged to inform Grenier of it. It was Grenier who said he wanted to see the season out with Lyon. He’s playing regularly with them and is in good form so fancies his chances of a WC spot in the French side. I think he thought moving clubs and that settling in period which can bring a dip in form may have hindered those chances.
I don’t know enough about the Cabella approach to be honest. But I know he’s a player we’ve fancied for a while though.

Prem – just to clarify, I don’t necassarily want a billionaire Russian or Arab taking over the club throwing money at everything – though if we got one then fair enough.
But I look at Everton and they don’t have that. What they have in Bill Kenwright is a man who has worked his **** off to do the very best for the club with very little money. He’s brought the best possible people in to grow the club off field, but also the best possible managers to get the most out of the players. He’s also backed those managers wherever possible. Too much to ask from Ashley?

      (Quote)

  58. Supporters having a go at certain players need to wake up.

    De Jong ****?
He’s played one game for us. Hardly played all season. Of course the guy is rusty.

Same goes for Mbiwa, Marveaux, Taylor. They have hardly got any game time because Pardew hasn’t rotated his squad. He only does when forced to and then players are usually played with no game time under their belts and played out of position.

Cisse was cast out. Now Pardew wants him to resurrect our season.

Also. Carr signing usually start well AMD go sour because they come from decent coaching set ups and then get Pardewed.

Sissoko looks much better on the wing because he has been playing there for almost a season. He needs to adjust to playing in the middle again.

We have a manager with zero foresight. It makes good players look poor. And average players look terrible.

      (Quote)

  59. So having a go at players is not on but wishing injuries upon them is.. JJ at his self rightous best! 🙂

  60. Just watching match of the day, and I was curious as to how the FA would react to Yaya Tore kicking Van Wolfswinkel in the back off the ball ? I mean, MOTD found it interesting enough to replay the incident ? I’m just curious, probably on the back of the toon receiving a 30K fine for Remy’s sending off. 30K isn’t a lot of money in the football world, but in the real world it is a hell of a lot of money… Will the FA look at this, it was pretty blatant if you ask me.

Watching the toon game on MOTD… whereas the Chelsea penalty was an absolutely pathetic effort from Mbwia, I can’t help thinking that it was an equally ***** decision by Webb. At the end of the day, the Chelsea corner didn’t even reach the box and was cleared, I think the penalty was harsh.

If Anita has a place in the toon midfield then I’ll be the next pope. The bloke is a fair weather player, too lightweight..
Sissoko having the touch of an elephant…that is what the bloke does, that is the norm. Everything else is a bonus… It’s a pity really, couldn’t Pardew coach this out of him, because he gets the ball in great positions only to have a brain fart at the wrong moment.

Take a look at Staylor, he is always just too far away from his player….ALWAYS…that is not unlucky, that is just poor decision making. It ALWAYS happens, then he deflects attention from himself with his arm flapping and posturing.

Apart from that, whereas I didn’t expect us to win yesterday, I didn’t expect us to get battered 3-0.

  61. I’m afraid what we saw of De Jong will be the norm.. The bloke doesn’t have the body strength for the EPL. I REALLY hope the bloke proves me wrong, but I fear he is too lightweight. His heading chance was a half chance, but a good chance….

  62. JJ@370, I agree 100% regarding your frustration with Pardew NOT rotating his players. By the same token, there is probably a good reason why he doesn’t do it.. i.e. he has no belief in the fringe players ? He just needs to take a look in the mirror.

  63. Could someone clarify for me what convinced Redmond, who I really like a lot, and who battered Man City yesterday, to chose Norwich over the Toon ?
