Game On! Newcastle v Everton

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
Tonight it’s the visit of Everton we’re covering, and you can catch and contribute to all the immediate action and reaction here in this very article.

A second home game in succession will leave United fans hopeful of a second win in succession against a strong Everton side who have their eyes on a late run at the Champions League spaces.

However, as I said in my match preview (online here, a win for United would close the gap on Everton which could catapult us into contention for a late charge at that final Europa League space. Not that the club would find it worthwhile but still…

If you’ve used the link in the last paragraph to have a nosey at the match preview then good on you. If you haven’t, do so, because it’s full of injury news for both sides, some waffle about the season to date, a look at the history of the fixture and some stats and facts thrown in for good measure.

Our game is once again not being shown live here in the UK. For some reason the media are preoccupied with two teams from Manchester who also go head-to-head this evening. However the good news is that our friends overseas are broadcasting the game so hopefully picking up a stream shouldn’t be too much of an issue and those unable to go to the game in person can still watch it. There are usually some links posted in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will be available roughly one hour prior to kick-off and is usually posted in the comments before we can get it published fully so if you’re not twitterised and can’t get it off there take a look below. We will of course update it the site as soon as possible.

That neatly wraps it up and covers all my bases so now it’s up to you guys and girls to dissect the team news, the match and anything that may come to pass as and when it happens. I’m working so have fun.

  1. Alex-the idea is that it’s easier for an attacking player to head a ball with decent power rather than just getting a glance on it. Seeing as none of our lads are much cop at heading goalwards they need all the help they can get…our deliveries are ***** though.

‘Can I ask what the point is in having Strola on the bench instead if Armstrong? What are we going to learn from Strola now? He’s ****.’

Agree. The coaching staff can’t see the wood for the trees, they are scared to try anything other than the tried and tested ‘safe tactics’. Which lose us games anyway. How many goals has Shola scored this season? Does he even hold the ball up anymore? He doesn’t even do that now, he is too slow to react or he barges into a defender with his heavy frame and gives away a foul. Remember when he was skinny? 😆
Now that there is nothing to play for, why not give Armstrong, Sammy, Bigirimana etc. some game time, so that we can see if they’re anywhere near good enough. Getting in the side has helped Dummett get to the next level and turned him into a good, cheap, homegrown. If they could do that with a few more it would mean more money to spend on a striker for example. Liverpool have that lad Flannigan, who is a cracking little fullback and cost nowt. Shola is at the end of his career, look towards the future and let go of the past. You put an old horse out to grass and start training the young ones. 🙂

  3. …and once more Armstrong is away with England U’17’s so a little bit difficult for him to feature 😉
Sammy is injured I think, don’t know about Bigi but he was on the injured list earlier this month.

  4. Toby…getting 1 post right doesn’t mean you’ve been “right all along” 😉 😆

  5. Kim…We’ll always have the same problem if a “bigger” club comes in, that’s football unfortunately. I doubt though we’d accept an £8.5m bid and we shouldn’t accept any bids for players who are World Cup bound in the hope that their value increases (if they’re to be sold).

  6. Newkie – I agree with you about fans overrating their players. But I would put none of our bunch on a pedestal.
I think Evertons side slightly better than ours, but to out play us and beat us 0-3 so comprehensively – I don’t believe the gulf between the 2 sets of players is that great.
Everton last night reminded me of KKs entertainers. Decent players looking outstanding because of the tactics and coaching of a good manager.

  7. Richie, Spot on , we must hang on for an hopefully inflated price due to WC performance if we must sell our better players I agree. To let any of them go early summer for a fast buck just looks reckless and greedy but then we are talking Jabba here 😉

  8. Sharpy I’m inclined to agree with that@ 233, I think the big difference is they seem to have more heart for it last night and tactically they were better Ithink too. Also is it me or are some of our players not passing to Benny 😕 It sure looked like that to me last night. I hope there isn’t a deep rooted problem there as he did very well on Saturday and his team mates need to at least acknowledge the part he played in securing 3 points that day. He showed on Saturday that when he keeps his head up and picks the right pass/cross to a better placed player it pays off and his overall performance should of at least meant he got more game time than 15 mins last night 🙁 Longer game time may shift some of that unwanted poundage he’s carrying too.

      (Quote)

  9. Having slept on it albeit not for very long. Our two full backs did have excuses. One of them is not and never will be a full back and the other is only learning the game. The gulf between the reams last night was more in style and tactics. We are still playing like we did in the days of supermac and tudor. Everton ****** them were playing this modern game stuff where everybody pushes forward denying space and even more they do things at pace.
4-4-2 will win the odd game but it’s not the way forward for me

      (Quote)

  10. Kim – there was a thing in the papers last week that afew of the senior players have a problem with Benny and his attitude and fitness. Like you say, I hope we aren’t loosing our team spirit coz that was one of the few plus points we have.
As for last night, Everton give us no time on the ball at all. They closed our players down wherever it was on the pitch while we stood off and watched when they had it.
Also, Martinez is also calm and controlled on the touchline. I’ve never seen him get annoyed or shouting at his players – even at Wigan.

      (Quote)

  11. You play players in their best position. It’s the only sensible thing to do.

You don’t try to fit players into a formation 🙄

You’re supposed to fit a formation based on the playrers available.

    Mbiwa at RB
    Sissoko at RW
    Gouffran at LW

All three of them are in those roles because of Pardew trying to impose 442.

They can all do a decent job in those positions most of the time but they will make basic mistakes & they will be limited in what they can offer.

If we had Debuchy available & wingers like Robert & Solano then 442 could be justified to an extent.

If Pardew wants to play 442 then we need to get rid of Gouffran & Sissoko & find some wingers with searing pace.

      (Quote)

  12. @sharpy17

I haven’t either although sometimes shouting is justified depending on the players & their mentality.

You couldn’t shout at players like Marv or Gouffran because it would destroy their confidence.

Some fans think Pardew is a good man manager with the way he has been able to keep Ben Arfa quiet.

I’d suggest it’s more a case of Ben Arfa growing up.

Great man managers are people like Rodgers & Martinez who manage to get every player playing for them more than anythin else.

    Steven Gerrard:
“He has been a revelation,” said the 33-year-old. “He keeps tinkering and tweaking formations, making little changes to personnel and pulls it off.”You go out feeling full of confidence and belief. His one-on-one management is the best I’ve known.”

“He is a young coach who has earned the right to become Liverpool manager and from week to week he is improving,” Gerrard added of the 41-year-old.”We are absolutely delighted he is here and I just hope there is a lot of movement as we speak because they have got to get him signed up as soon as possible.”

We’re stuck with Pardew & his coaches because:
    1) Mike Ashley is to incompetent to know what a decent manager is
    2) Some fans think Pardew has done a miraculous job working under Mike

Without fan pressure, we won’t change manager or coaches so we’ll keep watching the same limited tactics & performances.

Unless the club do better with a new manager, we won’t attract a new owner.

The soul of the club is being suffocated.

      (Quote)

  13. Sharpy , Yes we afforded them far too much time on the ball our closing down is non existent most of the time but in truth we always play like that. We play the same every game from what I have seen , have a quick little go at trying to get a quick goal and if that fails sit back for 60 odd mins. If by then we are losing send on the likes of Benny marv or Shola in a bid to get something out of the game. We set up to try not to lose or grab a late equaliser/ win, rather than setting up to take the game the whole 90+ to go for the win, I don’t understand that mind set. OK sometimes it will pay off but we need to vary our tactics more as every manager knows how we will set up now, every thing is predictable right down to the timing of and who will be subbed 🙄 It makes us and more importantly Pards look very limited in our approach to games . Maybe we don’t have the personal to vary our play 😕 we certainly have the flair players though to bring a more creative display if only he would start them, he can always hook them if they fail badly.

      (Quote)

  14. I was surprised how poor a lot of our guys looked last night , ones that had been previously impressing looked shocking, Anita and Goofy looked poor last night for what ever reason as did Dummett and Mbiwa.

I wish we had a decent winger to put in crosses too and take set pieces as I don’t like a full back doing it ,it just leaves us light when the inevitable counter attack happens 🙄

      (Quote)

  15. KK – I don’t think Benny has grown up at all mate. Like I say, a number of senior players have spoke out about the kids attitude – even Carver said the other day that he’s difficult to work with.
I think Pardew is a good man manager – Cisse credited him with that last weekend. Credit where it’s due, Pardew is good with his players off the field. It’s great being mates with the players on the training ground, but you win games on pitch.
He’s a good man manager but a **** tactician, and he’s survived on depending on ONE player to score goals – Ba, then Cisse, then Remy.
In each of those teams if that forward didn’t score then we either lost the game or struggled for goals.

      (Quote)

  16. Kim – I’ve thought that about whether we have the personnel in the squad. The trouble for me is – how would we know, how would Pardew know?. How much game time has the likes of Sammy, Marv, Benny, Gosling, Haidara – even Cisse this season got to prove themselves.
They may get the odd cup game now and again but that’s it. Sammy looked half decent during our run of poor games, but the 2nd Pardews ’11’ is fully fit they are back in until injured or suspended again.

      (Quote)

  17. The other thing for me last night was Luuk De Jong. I’ve defended the lad so far and said he needs the opportunity to prove himself (and I still do) but he certainly didn’t do that last night!.
I was disappointed with him, and I know the whole team played poorly, but when he was on the ball, he done nowt.
If he’s going to cost £6-8m – then I’d rather consider Jordan Rhodes or Danny Ings personally.

  18. We need a new spine to the team.

The rebuilding job this summer is just so big I really don’t have any confidence in the current regime doing it successfully.

Southampton could completely batter us on Saturday.

      (Quote)

  19. I also think that whilst we need creativity within our team, we also need a bit of strength – particularly in midfield. Anita and Sissoko disappointed me last night and having been my MOTM against Palace, I thought Tiote had a stinker as well.

  23. Feel for De Jong as it reflects so badly on him but as soon as he came and Cabaye went weve resorted back to ye auld 4-4-2 with a target man, No width and no control in midfield. Pointless, obsolete system in 2014

To get closer to the top 6 next season we need more pace, Creativity and composure. In the short term we could still add that for the remainder of this season, If we revert back to the system which suits our players 4-3-3 and give Ben Arfa and Marveaux a chance to stake their claim.

  24. From The Mag;

    Alan Pardew classic; ‘
We Are Up There With The Top Teams In Terms Of Scoring Goals’

Alan Pardew came out with an interesting statement before the Everton match, with the Newcastle manager talking about scoring goals compared to other Premier League teams.

When journalists are quoting Alan Pardew or you see him being interviewed at press conferences, I often wonder – ‘Pardew has made yet another ridiculous statement and why hasn’t he been taken to task about what he has said, which has no basis in truth, reality, whatever?’

    This is what the Newcastle boss had to say in the lead up to last night’s match;

“Goalscoring in the Premier League is very difficult and we are up there with the top teams in terms of scoring goals this year and that is what we want to continue.

“It has been tough to play from where we were with Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye, to where we are now.”

So according to Alan ‘we are up there with the top teams’ when it comes to getting on the scoresheet.

    This is how the Premier League table of goalscoring clubs looks;

    82 Liverpool

    79 Manchester City

    62 Chelsea

    55 Arsenal

    48 Manchester United

    46 Everton

    45 Southampton

    42 Swansea

    40 Tottenham

    38 Newcastle United

Well to me it looks like the top teams have scored over twice as many goals as Newcastle. Even going further down you have the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton all easily outscoring our lot.

Even Swansea fighting relegation have outscored Newcastle and Tottenham are ahead of us despite supposedly having a nightmare season in front of goal and sacking their manager, plus seemingly in the process of going to get rid of another.

United are ninth in terms of goalscoring and one thing Alan Pardew is right about is name checking Cabaye and Remy.

Looking forward to next season, out of our 38 goals, we will not have the 7 goals Cabaye contributed, nor almost certainly the 13 goals Remy has given us so far.

Taking into account we benefited from one own goal, it means the players (at the very best) we will be left with at the end of the season have contributed 17 goals in 31 matches so far.

Borrowing Loic Remy has papered over some worryingly large cracks and the fact Newcastle have failed to score in 9 of their last 13 Premier League matches is horrendous.

Sorry Alan, we aren’t ‘up there with the top teams in terms of scoring goals’, we are actually in a massive hole and desperately need to buy three transfer window’s worth of creative & goalscoring players in this one upcoming summer window. The alternative is a repeat of what we have seen in the last thirteen Premier League matches.

We’ll have to disagree about whether or not Pardew is a good man manager.

From the way he treated Tevez, Mascherano, Jonas, Marveuax etc & the low morale at Southampton, he doesn’t come across as a man the players would put themselves on the line for.

I know i wouldn’t. Is there a single Newcastle fan that could say they really feel Pardew is above average in managing his players? Would any fans out themselves on the line for Pardew??

He’s certainly not inspiring & i don’t take pride in his acts of violence being portrayed as passion – it’s as ridiculous as that guy that punched the horse, that’s not passion.

I’m convinced that we could swap Pardew with any Championship manager & we wouldn’t be better or worse off. Bring Allardyce or Pulis in & we’d be in the same boat with the same kind of moronic managers.

In fact, i don’t think we’d see any change if Pardew was suspended for much longer & Carver became the interim manager.

Nobody behind the scenes deserves credit (except Carr) because they’re all rubbish. The coaches, The owner, The manager, The Commercial sponsorship guys, The people running the academy – all of them are ****.

    Sissoko——–Tiote——-Anita—-Gouffran
    —————-De Jong—–Cisse————–

Even on paper it’s evident that the two man midfield of Tiote & Anita is not going to be able to provide for De Jong & Cisse.

The only hope is Gouffran & Sissoko would be able to cut the ball across or whip a cross in for Cisse & De Jong.

It might work if we had two ‘real’ wingers & Andy Carroll in the middle but if i wanted to watch West Ham under Allardyce, i would.

      (Quote)

  27. We need to play 3 in midfield. It has to be 3, not 2 but 3 (maybe 4, idk).

We need 1 or 2 creative players & 1 or 2 defensive players in the trio.

Sissoko, Tiote & Anita on it’s own is not ok. There is no creativity.

Some fans talk about Pardew’s hand being tied but all i can see is so many options on how to set a team up – there might be too many options!

      (Quote)

  28. “The low morale at Southampton”

    Lifted straight from Wikipedia 🙄

That was an excuse put out by Cortese who actually sacked him because they had many conflicts of interest; The people who allegedly resigned their posts as they couldnt stomach Pardew, Were actually replaced by Corteses choices including Les Reed (Of Charlton fame) who are still working at the club.

The morale was affected so much by Pardews presence that they won his final game in charge 4-0 and then lost the next four after he left.

Conflict of interest is a much more serious matter than arguing over Ricky Lamberts price tag, Fecking thing 🙄

    ____________________Marvauex______________________

    _____Remy___________Cisse_____________Ben Arfa_____

With Remy and Ben Arfa swapping sides occasionally to give the fullbacks a harder time.

I like Anita, I like Gouff, but but both need a rest and lets see what the forgotten lads can do.

If we play a physical side, then Willo can get the nod ahead of Mbiwa.

If we want more width. Bring on Hadaira for Santon. But really what do we have to lose? Lets go on the attack and try play some decent football.

      (Quote)

  31. JJ-I would play Haidara as it is anyway I think, I think he is better defensively than Santon and would be happy for Benny to go rogue a bit. Problem with Benny ahead of Santon or Debuchy is them both being stuck up the pitch when losing possession. I’ve had enough of Santon cutting in and shooting from 35 yards for now and would like to see if Haidara can get his crossing down and give us another option. Dummett was a breath of fresh air because he would pass and look for the return ball and then try and run into the bos himself-it’s crazy that with all of Santon’s dribbling ability he will rarely look for the overlap and then to speed into the box, always shots from distance and tame crosses. Is it the over reliance on his right foot or what?

      (Quote)

  32. Troy – I would argue that if we’d not sold our best player we would probably be near enough Everton and Southampton in terms of goals scored.

      (Quote)

  33. Didn’t catch the game last night – did anyone come out with the slightest bit of credit?
How did Cisse look following his last goal?

      (Quote)

  34. Solano-I’d say Krul couldn’t really be blamed for the goals, but he didn’t really have many saves to make, just picked the ball out the net, so not sure if that constitutes a good game. For me Cisse played similar to last week, he seems to have regained his touch and dribble a bit, and he was let down by poor passing from Goof, Tiote and others. Sissoko was ok. The rest really had stinkers. Benny had a decent impact and he set Anita up a treat with a cut back-which was promptly missed four yards out of an empty net. Marv didn’t really have a lot of time to do anything right or wrong.

      (Quote)

  35. I’m not sure how i’m re writing history?

Pardew was sacked by Southampton for a reason – if it’s not low morale what was it?

If it’s a case of trying to decide who lies the most, i think Pardew wins hands down with the constant lies he tries to feed us.

    Cortese vs Pardew?

I know who most fans in the country would pick.

We simply have too many **** footballers. De Jong, Dummett, Gouffran( he has an excuse but is getting worse every game – burnt out), Cisse, Willo. They’re all **** with the ball, not athletic enough, slow, not intelligent players. Does my head in 👿

I actually agree with KK on the running of the club; Its a total mess the youth teams play a different style and system to the first team. The director of football role is dropped even though it would work easily with someone competent in the role. The Academy hasnt produced a genuine first team ready player in 5 years and players all ower seem to regress.

Only Carr deserves credit, Some of the others have had their moments but most could be replaced tomorrow and wed barely notice…

I explained to her that I thought Mr Ashley was ignorant and rude for not turning round when I shout at him at the match and particularly when I’m singing songs about him in my best singing voice! 😯

I also asked whether I had to hand my plastic season tickets personally to Mr Pardew, as I had assumed this was the correct procedure as I had seen a few people doing so during the games recently.
She told me this was not the correct procedure and just to cut them up with scissors and put them in the bin would do. 😯

She informed me I had breached my terms and conditions of my 10yr season ticket agreement by cancelling but advised me there was nothing they could do about it.

I explained Mr Ashley had breached the terms & conditions by telling me he had the best interests of the club at heart and was endeavouring to improve things on and off the pitch yet he is trying to sell the land next to the gallowgate which prevents the club expanding the ground. I told her Mr Ashley would be hearing from my solicitor. 😯

Finally, I asked when I could ce and remove my bucket seat from tier 7 which I had paid for.

She said she couldn’t answer that because she didn’t know I had a bucket seat installed. 😯

I’ve asked her to get Mr Ashley to contact me to discuss a suitable time I can remove it. 😯

I’ve been sitting by the phone all day waiting. 🙄

CC – I think the club need a chairman and a DoF. The chairman to look after the business side of things and the DoF to look after the footy. I agree that there should be a continuity running though the different ranks of the club.

It worries me how much damage can be done between now and the end of the season, with poor results and performances. It’s really ironic that we achieved league security as early as we did and yet Pardew and Ashley still manage to inspire so much negativity.

None of us are naïve enough to think we can win the PL, but it’s certainly not daft to expect to compete in the cups is it. But alot of it is down to the luck of the draw and how the team competes on the day really. Look at Arsenal for example – 9-10yrs without a trophy, but what they do have are people who have the clubs best interest at heart.
I just don’t understand Ashleys position. He has no desire to improve the club, but equally he doesn’t seem to be breaking his neck to sell the club either. What’s the point?. He doesn’t seem to be recouping his debt so we are just stagnant.

  53. Ice , Aye, what a day, but all in all good news mate , Lews Barium swallow didn’t show any abnormalities and that thing with me and the HEP2 positive result is just where they added my blood to the hep2 cells to see what reaction takes place. Positive just means it proves I have ITP, and the second test was negative anyway as was the Lupus test 😀 . The Lewis puking thing is the chalk he had to drink today ,the manager at day centre confirmed it as it happened to him as well and internet confirms it’s a common occurrence too along with belching apparently. Anyway platelet count is up from 138 to 201 now 😎 happy days as ******** getting reduced from tomorrow to 40mg from 60mg 😀 . Just need a nice Scum slaughter now to make the day complete, puke aside 😉

  54. Ice, too true, it’s certainly a darn sight better than the count of 5 I was admitted with that’s for sure and shows I have responded well to ******* treatment which is all you can ask mate. Must say I can’t wait to get off em and get rid of my moon face 😆 I look like one of them distorted faces you get with them mobile apps you can get, not that I looked that much better before like 😆

  55. Troy – aye, I’m not surprised mate. It’s a real shame coz he’s a perfect age for getting right into it.
I was his age in 1990 – Ardiles was the manager with players like Budgie and Pav as keepers. Kevin Scott, Howey and Watson with his backflip throw ins in defence. Clarkie, O’Brien and Peacock in midfield and of course Micky Quinn up front.
    Then there was Italia ’90.

It was a great time supporting the toon back then and the national team for that matter. I struggle to give a **** about either at the moment.

  56. the next game dummet and mbiwa wil be targeted strait away as the weak link ,pards …..must drop them as they are **** to say the least mabia should train with the under 21 squad (no reserve team any more)and dummys agent must get him a loan move asap poss lg 2 for a season.alan pardew wants shot for making the lad look silly .hope santon is back soon for lb

  57. Kim – great news about your blood tests, big relief I bet.
Hope Lewis is just a short term thing as well – is he in decent enough spirit though?.

I had Ryans parents evening at his school tonight. He’s only 5 but it was class!. He’s excelling in all areas, but the best thing to here was her saying that he was such a pleasant and polite lad. I could be more proud of the kid!. That’s the **** that really matters, not the **** that does on at SJP.

I was young Chip’s age when I first started going in 1980. The ground was ****. No roof on the gallowgate or Leazes ends. Standing on terraces with 16k others watching **** in the old second division.

Young Chip doesn’t realise how good he has it actually. However, I was in absolute love with the club and a defeat would spoil my entire weekend, whereas, he doesn’t know who we are playing until I tell him on the day of the game.

He’s a class footballer and captains his team. He is still a toon supporter and has every strip and all the toon gear but just not inspired by the insipid football.

I suppose he was born with more sense.

  60. pass forward, back, back… & start again. **** footy with no real idea on what we’re doing. Sack Pardew and boycott Ashley and his bullshit proposals.

As if we’ll spend money in the Summer. If we do it’ll be off the sale of Krul, Tiote, Debs & we’ll only see a small fraction of what we’ve made.

We’ll never go forward under Pardew and Ashley. Why would Ashley not sell the land behind st James? its not as if we’ll ever expand under him.

Would anyone trust handing cash to Pardew to sign the players we need 😯
Is Paul Jewell out of work? 😀

  61. Troy – My first match was 1987 – Mirandinhas first season. Things weren’t great at the club then either, though my suffering wasnt too long lived. The footy got a bit better under Ozzy and shortly after saw KKs return.

I can’t begin to imagine how much energy and emotion we have exhausted on following NUFC so maybe young Chip has got it right mate. Focus on his own game and let the knackers at SJP get on with theirs. At least he’s not bought into the mega spending City or Chelsea.

  62. Sharpy@293, Great to hear your lads doing well, and yeah it’s great when they say how nice they are to know, you get that feeling of a job well done in bringing them up like.
Lew is ok mate he’s been poorly last week or so but seems a bit brighter now thanks. The Barium was done because there have been roughly once a month puking episodes like, but we think it’s tied into his posture and stuff and his drinks are thickened with thick n easy now to make his drinks go down slower and cut out the risk of him aspirating . You can only tackle each problem as it arises with Lew one at a time really and hope for the best. When well he’s generally a happy chap to be fair but he does have lots to contend with bless him.

Aye. We are the mugs I suppose. But then again, I think it’s good to be proud of your local club. Life would be a whole lot duller without the turbulence of following the Toon. 😉

    @Mark

I don’t see how you can imply Pardew has any say in who comes to the club? Ashley has never handed a penny for transfers to Pardew as far as I’ve been aware? 😯

Are you suggesting he is handed money to buy players?
