Game On! Newcastle v Manchester City

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Good afternoon all, and welcome to our first game of a new Premier League season. First up, a tough game against Manchester City.

A new look United will want to start the season off with a win in front of our own fans, at least in part to start putting some gloss on what has so far been a poor year in terms of results.

In the blue corner, Manchester City will be wanting to extend a rather fearsome unbeaten streak against us and will no doubt want to signal their intentions as they set about trying to retain the Premier League crown. Not that early indicators matter – City having won the league last season whilst spending the least calendar days sitting at the top of the table – but they will be wanting the win just as much as us.

Early team news, stats, facts and injury news can be found here in the match preview so if you haven’t already done so or just wish to have another look please feel free to take a peek by clicking the hyperlink above.

The game is live on Sky here in the UK and is also being shown on any number of overseas channels so picking up a stream shouldn’t be too much trouble. If you do find a particularly good stream then please share it by posting the link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Full team news will be published below as and when it becomes available.

As I said in the match preview, games like this are dead rubbers for me. I tend to expect nothing and hope for a lucky break. That being said, I’ve always said the minimum I expect is 100% effort from the players, and that should apply whoever we are playing against.

Howay the lads!

  1. Newkie – it did seem a bit far fetched like and I’ve never heard of any other player doing it – certainly not in the PL anyway. It was crystal clear he didnt want to stick around though, and despite how well he played in the first half of the season, had we not sold him to PSG I think we would have had a right huffy ****** on our hands.
Anyway, he’s gone now so we go with what we’ve got.

I see Man City have publicly said that Micah Richards, Nastasic, Sinclair and Guidetti have all be made available to leave.

  2. Nastasic or Richards who would you prefer Sharpy? Both injury prone as fook mind but i think i would prefer Nastasic.

Sinclair and Guidetti are a bit meh really and i think we are better of biding our time and waiting for better.

  4. Rods – 😛 Good to see you on buddy, how you keeping mate? 😉

Santii – I’d take both!!. Get rid of Saylor and any one of the other 3 for me and get both them in.
I’d take Sinclair as well personally, get rid of Jonas and get Sinclair in.

  5. …and the Hulls, Villas and the Southamptons.

Stands to reason really. There’s only one NUFC, and there appears to be a few of the rest of them.

Fucking hate it when people refer to other individuals in plural. The Bill Oddies of this world.

    The Bastards.

  11. One thing that should be an improvement this year is early cup matches against the sides like Gillingham (assuming we don’t embarrass ourselves). We have a number of players who I would actually be quite excited to see play a whole match, like Ayoze, Armstrong and Aarons. Beats the usual of throwing out Guthrie, Lovenkrands, Shola, Smith, players who we just knew wouldn’t show anything that could get them into the league side.

      (Quote)

  12. Do seem to remember some writing off of Ba when he was dragged off at HT of his debut.

It was similar to pretty much every man city match at SJP since we last beat them; Played pretty well and cant complain about much but irritatingly got picked us off on the break again

      (Quote)

  13. Sharpy-no arguments that had we kept Cabaye he would have been a right little kernt in the dressing room. He is someone who plays exactly how he is, quite petulant with his tackles and the like. Still quality though!

I felt like we got good money for him..but transfers are ridiculous now, and I felt robbed after Manure filled Everton’s coffers for that clown fellani!

      (Quote)

  14. Newkie @ 336: **** team for Gillingham – as we engineer another **** cup exit on purpose 🙄

    Elliot
    Satka
    Saylor
    Yanga-Mbiwa
    Haidara
    Abeid
    Anita
    Aarons
    Obertan
    Ayoze
    Ferreyra

Sameobi, Armstrong and a slew of purples on the bench

      (Quote)

  15. Good to see Chucky bagging a brace last night, and Sammy getting himself a goal as well.
However to concede 3 goals suggests poor defending runs deeper than just our first team.

      (Quote)

  16. Bris-I forgot our **** purpose losses! But aren’t they the only things that we can plan and achieve well 🙂

In all seriousness I like the look of that side. Plenty of pace and youth in there. If Saylor can get some horse blinkers on him so he doesn’t chase his own shadow we should do well.

      (Quote)

  17. Newkie – yeah I know what you’re saying if you compare Cab to Fel deal, but I think that was just a Moyes **** up. We scored with Carroll in a similar way, and I thought that £19m was about right for Cabaye.
Out of interest, what would your line up be against Gillingham be mate?

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy- aye that’s probably about right. But still…don’t saints value Schneiderlin at 27 mil! Cabaye might be older but he is definitely a better player and neither of them are even English! The market is just stupid nowadays.

My line up would probably be

    —————-Rivvy——-
    Rolando—-Ayoze———-Obertan
    ——Tiote—————Bigi
    Haidara-Mbiwa-Tayls/Willo-Janmaat/Santon
    —————Elliot—————-

Tiote as captain, I think the rest should have enough quality to win the match. I would play Rivvy if he still hasn’t scored as I think he’ll need a goal asap to settle himself. If he has scored maybe start Chucky up top instead?

I’d prefer to start Willo but tayls will get the shout, we don’t have RB cover so I’d be tempted to start Santon there again, or even move Haidara over and put Santon back on the left.

      (Quote)

  19. And for Villa:

    Krul

    Janmaat – Willo – Colo – Dummett

    Sissoko – Anita – Colback

    De Jong – Cabella

    Rivière

Assuming Tiote not fit, De Jong fit.

Next few games will tell if Rivière is a first eleven striker or not, on the break at Villa and Saints and on the front foot versus Palace and Hull.

      (Quote)

  20. Newkie – I think I’d go with a line up closer to this one mate:

    ———————- Krul ——————–
    Janmaat – Willo – Colo – Dummett
    ———– Sissoko — Anita ————
    Gouffran ———————- Aarons
    ———- Chucky — Rivière ————

We will only be around 2 or 3 games into the season. I’d want the back 4 playing together as often as possible to get used to playing with each other. For me, Sissoko and Anita would be back up to Tiote and Colback, so I’d play those 2 and not rush Tiote back. Whether Rivière has scored or not, I’d play him and Chucky up front to try and get them on the score sheets. Goals will only build their confidence, so keep them in there for me.

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy – fair enough, I can see the argument about a settled back four, but personally I want to see other people putting in a performance that makes Pardew think, even if “it’s only Gillingham”. I think Mbiwa and Haidara should be in the first 11, and to restrict them from even the early cup match will significantly impact on their chances of getting into the first team.

Left back is a position we are well stocked in. People joke about our number of left back signings (despite the fact that Santon was our only replacement for Enrique, who had no cover, Haidara was a well bought youth prospect and Dummett one of the only lads to come through the academy – so I don’t really see the problem) or the fact he uses left back subs like he did last year, but it’s the one position where we have three players who all seem to have potential and nobody can say for sure who is best.

Dummett is the least popular of the three, the least technically sound, but he was by no means the worst defender on the weekend..

Depending on Tiote’s recovery I would be tempted to play Sissoko, I’d like to see Bigi get a game because he has totally vanished and putting him alongside Anita would give us a really lightweight midfield.

      (Quote)

  22. wow plenty of **** on here this morning… 😆

In the cup game, i would like to see Ayoze, Aarons & Cabella all playing behind Ferreyra. I think that trio will be very dangerous going forward.

      (Quote)

  23. That is a **** evaluation and proposal Santii, back to where you were.

Who was the guy who came on here and I thought was a massive wind up but who pleaded his case for just being deluded? He was on the last season or two but can’t remember his name now…the one who said Anita was better than Remy and was most important player?

      (Quote)

  24. Santii-Think that was him yeah, I must be going senile, catching it from the elders on here. Wonder what he makes of Anita now? We’re only one game in, but already Colback looks like the midfielder we’ve needed that Anita never quite managed to become.

  25. Little bit of inside info for you lads….

HBA is leaving to join Lyon in a swap deal for Grenier plus £8-10m

Could happen this week……watch this space

      (Quote)

  26. Hope you are right though but again i wont hold my breath until something more solid comes to light.

Any chance you can tell us where you got the info from?.. 😀

      (Quote)

  27. LST – where have you got that from like mate?.

GTE – my team for Villa would be:

    ———————– Krul ——————-
    Janmaat – Willo – Colo – Haidara
    ——————— Tiote ——————-
    —– Sissoko ———- Colback ——
    —————— Cabella —————–
    ——- De Jong —– Rivière ——–

If Tiote is still not ready the Anita, and if Siem is still out then I would go with Perez and have Chucky on the bench.

      (Quote)

  28. Liam if you get this right you could be the the owner of the best title going on the blog, literally our only “ITK” – i’m not sure anyone else has ever got something big (that wasn’t obvious) correct! 😀

      (Quote)

  29. Be surprised if De Jong is ready. He has a calf strain, same as Remy had last season and was out 6 weeks. Pardew said he should play a part v Villa. We know what that means.

      (Quote)

  30. Most people I know won’t agree but I prefer Anita as our holding mid to Tiote. Holding – not DM! Thought he did well v City despite . . . . . .

  31. Played football last night and there were a couple of Geordie fans (kitted in the new shirt in all) so went over and spoke to them in usual fashion etc.

Turns out one of them sees Pards alot (sons play football together) and live in same area in Surrey – Place called whyteleafe.

I knew this to be true as have incidentally run into Pards a couple of times in the area.

Anyway he was chatting to Pards about HBA and how much we love him as fans etc. Pards told him they are actively trying to sell him as not only is he unfit, but has caused problems with other French players. Apparently Lyon are the only team that have come in for him but have no money to pay for him. Our new matey said does that mean we are keeping him for the season.

Pards apparently said no he will be at Lyon but only if they get Grenier. Pards is hopeful that Grenier will be a toon player in coming weeks as hes apparently keen to come. Sticking point is the financial package at the moment.

We werent so sure but the lad sounded legit. Heres hoping! The few benefits of living in the south lads…. 😕

      (Quote)

  32. Just to add to that – Grenier has apparently been left out of the Europa League squad for Lyon!

Deal in the offing? Who knows….

      (Quote)

  33. I hope that’s right, LST – there was a discussion earlier thinking that Grenier could do us very well. I’m sure we’re trying to do a swap, but whether Lyon will drop the price enough, I doubt.

Grenier and Richards by end next week, anyone? Fantasyland…

      (Quote)

  34. Prem – believe it or not the last time I saw pards was in a sports direct shop…The irony. He was buying tennis rackets for his kids. I couldnt help chuckle. That was the year we finished 5th so I was all pally…..

If I saw him now would tell him to grow some balls and demand that Carroll money! 😆

      (Quote)

  35. Not sure about all the hype with Everton. They have simply bought their on loan players and lost arguably the most exciting Delefoeu.

Think they will struggle more than last year particularly as they have Europa.

      (Quote)

  36. Liam, Nice one, but what ever you do, don’t mention the AC money on here you’ll undo all your good work with some of the bloggers 😉

      (Quote)

  37. I think they might well struggle, LST, especially after Christmas. For the same reason, I fancy Hull to flirt with relegation. However, top-6 look unbreachable, and while if we have a good season and they a badminton we could catch Everton, someone will do a Southampton this season as well – possible Saints again, Swansea look a possibility – so I’d still say 8th for us, 7th if we get really lucky. Decent, but not too exciting (unless we win the LC) 😛 😛

      (Quote)

  38. Liam i said the same thing about Everton, after they had just bought Lukaku.

Sounds about right on Ben Arfa though i guess its not hard to guess he is a disruptive, lazy, egotistical *****. Lets hope your new friend is right.

      (Quote)

  39. Reason Grenier left out of euro game is he’s not fit,he’s being doing special training,so don’t know if that would affect any deal, mind we are good at buying injured players 😀

      (Quote)

  40. Picked this up from a Tiote to Arsenal article. Just got to love those that make their living from words!

The Ivorian’s daring attitude in front of goal, may be one of the reasons why Wenger is a firm admirer, given the fact that the 28 year-old is not shy to try a few pile-drivers from range when given the chance.

In addition, Tiote is equally capable of attracting admirers with his gracefulness in terms of passing, as well as strong willingness to bomb forward with his purposeful dribbling ability, two key attributes which are sure to bear fruit should he complete a move to North London.
