Game On! Newcastle v Manchester City

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Good afternoon all, and welcome to our first game of a new Premier League season. First up, a tough game against Manchester City.

A new look United will want to start the season off with a win in front of our own fans, at least in part to start putting some gloss on what has so far been a poor year in terms of results.

In the blue corner, Manchester City will be wanting to extend a rather fearsome unbeaten streak against us and will no doubt want to signal their intentions as they set about trying to retain the Premier League crown. Not that early indicators matter – City having won the league last season whilst spending the least calendar days sitting at the top of the table – but they will be wanting the win just as much as us.

Early team news, stats, facts and injury news can be found here in the match preview so if you haven’t already done so or just wish to have another look please feel free to take a peek by clicking the hyperlink above.

The game is live on Sky here in the UK and is also being shown on any number of overseas channels so picking up a stream shouldn’t be too much trouble. If you do find a particularly good stream then please share it by posting the link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Full team news will be published below as and when it becomes available.

As I said in the match preview, games like this are dead rubbers for me. I tend to expect nothing and hope for a lucky break. That being said, I’ve always said the minimum I expect is 100% effort from the players, and that should apply whoever we are playing against.

Howay the lads!

  1. KIM haven’t spent Carroll money, but asAMF said we should spend the interest jabba has made on the deal 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  2. Liam – that sounds that far fetched it could actually be true – I mean the source rather than the rumour. Me and Ice were discussing the Grenier for Benny rumour last week.
The idea of you walking up to random adult blokes wearing the latest toon gear and giving you red hot transfer news makes me chuckle though 😆

Re Everton, I’ve already made my prediction that we will finish above them this season.

      (Quote)

  3. Georgio, don’t you know by now that any of our players are **** until they are linked to top 4 clubs 😉

      (Quote)

  4. Problem I see with any deal is Lyon cannot pay anywhere near what Benny is getting now plus Benny seems to be digging his heels in and seeing out his contract here

      (Quote)

  5. On Everton – a lot to do with the fixture list, especially the first half dozen to 10 games – we’re not too bad, maybe 10 points, and Swansea have a decidedly easy run to end September, but Everton have a run of difficult games and could easily find themselves near the bottom of the table.

      (Quote)

  6. Leicester cityhoping to sign defender Rod Fanni from OM, away fans will have fun with that surname.

      (Quote)

  7. Talk that Nani is going to Sporting /L on loan with m/u paying all his wages,so what’s the point of that deal?? surely that cannot be right, these rags talk ***** and SSN at times

      (Quote)

  8. If you could have one of the following, which one would it be?
    Grenier
    Big strong striker
    Commanding centre half

I’d be amazed if we get one of those…I’ll be bowled over if we get 2! And if we get all 3, then I’d streak across SJP…

      (Quote)

  9. Sharpy – Are you telling me that you wouldnt go up and chat to lads in a toon shirt? Its fairly standard and a rarity in these parts let me tell you! 😆

One thing that all us Geordie boys love is a transfer chat….

I hope the lad wasnt pulling me chain but maybe my trust for a fellow geordie is too naive! 😯

      (Quote)

  10. TDS, I want our defence shored up mate ,build from the back I say, if our back line is tight then it could give licence for the AMF and front guy/guys to get forward more than just the last 10 mins of a game 😉

      (Quote)

  11. TDS:

    1. Commanding CH

    2. Grenier

    3. Big, strong striker

But, like you, I doubt any of it will happen. I’d even settle for third-choice Centre Half, so we don’t have to rely on Saylor or Mbiwa.

      (Quote)

  12. Ice – I think they are being held over a barrel for that Rojo kid they’re after. I saw this morning they wanted Nani on loan but didnt know it was M/U paying his wages as well. My my, how the might fall!!

      (Quote)

  13. Sharpy, That’s what happens when you can’t offer CL football the football world suddenly becomes smaller

      (Quote)

  14. It’s such a shame that nobody wants S Taylor so we could find a descent replacement. Joe would have got that useless player off the way bill. Rivere doesn’t seem as good as Remy but still early days.

      (Quote)

  15. Funny. I’d go for the striker. I’d like to see a number 9 capable of holding up the ball and bringing others into play. Also more of an outlet for aerial balls.

      (Quote)

  16. Since the Glaziers took control of MUFC they have had a net spend of something like 6 million pound. They are absolutely pilfering that club.

    TDS

Grenier or a striker are necessities but it would be nice if we could get one or the other.

As for a centre back. Again, you and i have been saying this since the start of the window it seems, none will come in until one is sold. No one seems interested in Taylor and Mbiwa’s wages are to much.

      (Quote)

  17. GTE I think getting one player over the line would be a miracle. S Taylor won’t hand in a transfer request and do everyone a favour. Still I would say a Striker remains our main priority. I don’t know about Grenier, he seems to a patient man and has his heart set on champions league football. Sadly I cant see us achieving that on Ashley’s budget and Pardews tactics.

      (Quote)

  18. Santii, I remember reading that clubs had been in for Saylor but he turned them down coz he was Newcastle through and through. Bloody Loyalty. No place in the modern game 😉

      (Quote)

  19. They probably offered him half the wages Prem. Loyalty is the football code word for great wages. Champions league footy is the code word for even better wages 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  20. Liam – I thought Pardew and his family all lived in Corbridge? Also I thought he only had two girls, not a son?

      (Quote)

  21. I think it has to be about 50/50 for most importance out of striker and cb, but seeing as we’ll probably be playing 1 out and out striker up top I guess a defender would be of more use to our first 11. Then again with the way Colo is playing and the unpredictability of Mbiwa, is Williamson the weakest link in the side?

I’d just go for a striker because they’re more exciting, that’s about it 🙂

      (Quote)

  22. SANTII

Yep. I think there is room for Grenier if HBA goes and I think there’s still room for a top striker too. But definitely no room for a centre half unless one goes. And as many people have said, can you really see anyone paying MYM or Saylor’s wages? I can’t…

      (Quote)

  23. Liam – not at all mate. I think that’s one of the things that stand Geordies apart from other football fans. I was in Cyprus earlier this year and got chatting to a couple of lads from the Portsmouth area who were sporting the toon crest. We were talking like we knew each other for years when it was actually the first time we’d met. Our lass couldn’t believe it 😆

Kim – I think it’s exactly that. It shows just how difficult it is to sign real quality players when you’re not in Europe – regardless of how big a club you are.

TDS – I don’t think it’s a case of put them in order. It depends which comes available first. I’d hate to think we passed up the chance to sign Grenier coz we need a CH or CF – opportunities to sign a play of Greniers quality don’t come round too often.
But, I think we would be signing Grenier coz Lyon are interested in Benny as well. So it’s replacing a player rather than adding. I think the same would have to happen if we wanted a CH.
CF wise, I would be happy to give the current bunch 6mths – a season to show what they can do. Rivière, Chucky and Perez have all just came, so I think it’s only fair to give them a chance to prove themselves. Also we still have Cisse – so again, if we want another CF I reckon we are going to have to get rid of 1 first coz I’m aware I haven’t added Armstrong or Campbell to that list either.

      (Quote)

  24. Grenier won’t come here. He wants champions league football and is staying at Lyon till that happens. Arsenal would probably be his no.1 choice.

      (Quote)

  25. SHARPY

I meant in order from a fan’s perspective. You’re dead right though, we’ll sign one of those if the right deal comes up. Otherwise, we won’t. Simple as that.

      (Quote)

  26. Stem – but he may look at Cabaye and Debuchy and think coming to us would be a quicker way of achieving that mate.
Joining us would allow him to play PL football and put himself firmly in the limelight week in week out.
If he got himself a buy out clause in his contract, I reckon he would see that as a quicker step to CL footy than staying at Lyon.
It doesn’t often happen that the top 4 clubs shop in the French league.

      (Quote)

  27. TDS – I think any new arrival now will only happen if a player or players leave first. I’m not talking about players like Vukic, Fergie or Abied – although they probably need moving on, their wages aren’t huge wages and them leaving wont affect newbies coming in.
I think we need to move players like Saylor, Jonas, Benny and maybe Cisse on first. There’s about £200k pw of our wage bill – which would pay the wages of Richards, Grenier and a CF. I really don’t know which CF I’d fancy in though TBH, coz I think all the ones we’ve been interested in dont fancy the move.

      (Quote)

  28. No question to me that we can only hope for one in, if at least one big earner goes out.

On the CB vs CF debate, I don’t see this as necessarily a first eleven debate, but about strengthening the next seven or eight positions – up front, we haven’t replaced Remy, but do have a lot more creative options behind the striker, which even allows for injury cover, would ne nice to get another clearly first eleven forward player in, but compare that situation with the defence, where the club (and here I agree with them) doesn’t think that either Saylor or Mbiwa are reliable, so we are one injury away from a hiding (and Colo’s apparently a declining force), hence I’d prefer a dominant CB, or, if we can’t do that, a credible reserve.

      (Quote)

  29. SHARPY

HBA for Grenier, Saylor for Richards…that would work for me…

Agreed on the striker thing…Benteke injured, Lukaku went for more than we would pay anyway, not sure what happened with Gomis, surely Bony would be too pricey too? Then you get players like Origi (spelling?) that Liverpool sign and then loan straight back…

I don’t know enough to know who I want but I’d like someone who can bang them in and hold the ball up. Not critical but would be nice.

      (Quote)

  30. Can’t see the need for a CF. We have got in two neither of whom know the league, but then the ones we are being linked with have no EPL experience, so why bother, maybe in January if we have to. Abel Hernandez seems most doable.

CB. we need to lean on Saylor to go. MYB is potentially still OK, Willo & Colo need to be replaced in the next couple of years. Depends upon how the younger ones look. They not ready yet, but they may be ready to replace Willo or Colo next year?

Grenier looks doable. Lyon need money. The nearer to the deadline the more they will be willing to deal. I think we can afford to do a deal with HBA and resolve the wages issue. I just hope it doesn’t get bogged down with talks about their striker.

      (Quote)

  31. More from Pards:
Nay I say! Nay to the doomsayers! Nay to the petty quibblers! My pencil is sharp! My eyes are bright! We will stride forward and conquer all before us! Ermmm except Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, Man U, Liverpool, and Spurs! Arrgghhh mateys, arrgghhhh!

      (Quote)

  32. TDS – one thing that seems apparent to me is that Pardew/Carr and Charnley seem prepared to wait to get the player they want. They are persistent and wouldn’t get just anyone. If you look at Cisse, Debuchy and Cabella – they were signed over 2 windows (if that makes sense), and Siem said we had been tracking him for 2 seasons.
Maybe it will be a case that they have their minds set on Lazacette or Lasogga and will wait til either Jan or next summer to get him – and that’s why we’ve loaned Chucky.
I think the Gomis deal didn’t come off coz of the length of contract he wanted – and got with Swansea.
Bony I think will defo be too much, so unless its Joel Campbell or someone like that – who I’m not totally sold on, then I think they will wait again.
If that is their approach, then I approve personally.

      (Quote)

  33. There is still time for improvement. We’ve got 37 games left. We can sell Tiote, Benny, Obertan, Vuckic, Saylor, and possibly some of the coaches’ wives to white slave traders. Oodles of cash to come in. Then we’ll make a quick deal for a 10 year old from Scunthorpe. Lovely.

      (Quote)

  34. Well in all seriosity, I suppose we could win some games this season. We definitely don’t have a proven attack. We can keep the ball well in midfield. We have a decent keeper. We need a much more aggressive attack with more players in the box against Villa. If we see that we might get a draw.

  35. As Official Club Curmudgeon I will be saying some fairly unpleasant things in the days to come. Sometimes the truth hurts. Sometimes wor Alan needs to be chastised. Sometimes wor owner gets out of control. This will not go unpunished. Prepare yourselves mates. It could get ugly.

  36. On the other hand if we win a few I will be very happy. I will sing their praises to the heavens. I will brag outrageously. But how likely is that to happen?

  37. What say you all? If we lose wor first 6 games in a row should we strip Pards naked, tie him up outside the ground, and paint his pickle green?

      (Quote)

  38. You lads are so mean to your beloved manager. He’s under a lot of pressure you know. Where to find a brilliant yet cheap CB? How to get Benny on a diet? How to get the green paint off his pickle? Just try to sympathize a bit more lads.

  39. SHARPY

I’m with you there. The Ferreyra signing as a temporary measure or possible future signing makes sense…either he works out and we sign him or he doesn’t and hopefully we get the one we really wanted.

One thing you can say for the club is that they haven’t made too many bad buys and there hasn’t been a single bad buy for big money.

      (Quote)

  40. TDS

    Agree

I think we have a very good modern transfer policy.

Apart from the mega rich elite teams has anyone done better than us this window so far?

      (Quote)

  41. We’re very good at spending small money, and then complaining about agent’s fees and such. And some of our small money has been wasted. Obertan for example. Beautiful bit of small money spent there. Still, early on Benny looked like small money well spent. As did Jonas, and definitely Cabaye. But profit must be taken. Right Mike?

      (Quote)

  42. I’m looking forward to a lovely bit of small money being spent in January. We’ll need a couple of players by then. Alain Perdue is on the lookout for some reasonably priced players who will waive their agent’s fees and play for very reasonable wages (we can always cancel more coaches’ complementary tickets to help make up the balance Mike).

      (Quote)

  43. Napoli vs Bilbao on tonight should be a good game. or Arsenal vs Besikitas (Ba)

Then the Madrid derby is on after. lovely

      (Quote)

  44. The only problem with our transfer policy is that Ashley seems to have an aversion to spending 8 figures these days and unfortunately thats what goals cost these days. 🙁

      (Quote)

  45. Santii – I’m watching the Arsenal game and Ba is such a good player IMO. He’s leading the line so well for Besiktas. I know he didn’t want to come back to us, but I’d have preferred him over Remy any day.

      (Quote)

  46. Same Sharpy. He is causing Arsenal all sorts of problems here. How much did he cost again… 😆

      (Quote)

  47. Don’t get much chance to get on wifi in Spain.

Just tuned in for 5 mins.

Still see the Clueless Crew don’t see the warning signs. 🙄

We created bot all all game which is what I predicted.

No creativity. Rivière looked totally isolated and was fed scraps. Nothing down the flanks or central.

Cabella , without being great had a tidy game. He must be thinking to himself that he’s made a right gaff joking us.

I dread to think how we will fair once injuries kick in.

Still sticking to my prediction of 16th only cos in January the fat ******* will have to buy his way out of relegation.

      (Quote)

  48. I believe the way forward is Belgian midget strikers and possibly one or two spotty Norwegian teenagers. Listen to sense Mike. Stay away from the big blockbuster deals like bidding for Billy Shortstrokes.

      (Quote)

  49. Santii – wasn’t it less than £5m or something?. He’ll have a £3m buy out clause though I bet 😆

I’m not sure if I miss something with Jack Wilshire, but for me the kid is hugely overrated isn’t he?!. People keep banging on about him, but Aaron Ramsey is head and shoulders above him IMO. Wilshire struts about right enough, but he rarely backs it up.

      (Quote)

  50. Sharpy

Overhyped after playing a few good games early in his career and then fails to live up to the hype. Seems to be a necessity for English players these days 😆 😆

Never mind Ramsey.. Jordan Henderson has become far better than him.

      (Quote)

  51. Arsenal might have to sweat this one out on the return leg. They’ll never win the league (or make real noise in the CL) with Giroud up top. They really need a striker

      (Quote)

  52. Troy – Man City had 10 chances in the game – 5 on target 5 off target.
Newcastle had 9 chances – 0 on target 9 off target.

We DID create the chances, we lacked accuracy in this particular game.

I’m sure you’ll come back with ‘stats are rubbish’, or 9 attempts and none on target proves we need a CF over a CH or whatever. But with all the quality City have in their side, they only had a 50% accuracy rating.
If we can keep creating 9-10 chances per game, and improve our accuracy, then I’m sure we will beat lesser opponents.

      (Quote)

  53. Santii – aye Henderson has came on loads playing alongside Stevie G. His pass to Sterling for his goal at the weekend was cracking.
**** Jack Wilshire – Jack Colback for England!!! 😛 😆

      (Quote)

  54. lmao seen the Ginger Pirlo on twitter a few times now Sharpy 😆 😆 ….

Lets hope that doesn’t catch on

      (Quote)

  55. Sharpy – 50% on target shot ratio is bloody high! This is the reason good strikers cost good money as they hit the target often. Remy very rarely missed the target and whatever anyone thinks – we will miss that accuracy.

Before the game many people were concerned about our striker options and were concerned whether we could score enough goals. Do you think it was a coincidence that after all that concern we didn’t get one single shot on target?

      (Quote)

  56. Pfft Besikitas should have one that. No Ramsey for the return leg though.

    Napoli drew as well 🙁

      (Quote)

  57. Stu – I don’t think it was coincidence, I think it was because we were also up against world class defenders who gave our players absolutely no time at all. We will not face a defence that good week in week out.
Rivière got in some good positions and got some shots off, as did Cabella and Perez when he came on.

It was there first game in the PL against the best team in the league. They have NO weak link IMO, and every player they have are world class. As I’ve said before, Remy didn’t score on his home debut either. Cabella looks as cool as a cucumber and I wouldn’t worry about his composure in coming games, and I think once Rivière notches he will settle down.
